This Condo offers all the amenities and is within a short drive to Douglas Beach, Oval Beach, Downtown Douglas and Saugatuck. We did not skimp on anything regarding what guests "may" need while staying with us! Our cottage will keep you comfortable with 2 plush Queen beds, complete with soft & fresh linens, eye masks, and tissues. Each bedroom has their own adjoining full bathroom stocked with all of the essentials, (Hypoallergenic shampoo/conditioner/body wash, eye makeup remover wipes, toothbrushes/toothpaste, Q-tips and cotton rounds, and plenty of TP!
After a great night on the town, coffee is essential. We kept this in mind when we stocked coffee, creamer, and sugar in our convenient coffee station located in the kitchen.
Should you want a cozy night in, our cottage has all of your culinary needs taken care of. We provide our guests with pots/pans, cutlery, spatulas/utensils, a blender, kitchen knives, various gadgets, and spices.
Our cottage is pet-friendly--We know how important our furry friends are to our family, so we did our best to provide amenities for your pals that will pamper them as well! The back yard is large and fully fenced in so they can roam and enjoy the outdoors, and a fresh & clean set of food and water bowls is set out for them and ready for their next feast! Blankets, cleaning supplies, and a crate is also supplied in the front bedroom closet for your convenience.

And of course, should you need any additional supplies our co-host lives locally, is easily reachable, and is more than happy to stop by when you need. We appreciate you showing love to our cottage and are so excited for you to make lasting memories in this home that we love.

Because of this, we cannot guarantee its functionality. We do not charge extra fees to use the hot tub and offer it as a courtesy. We will ABSOLUTELY let you know if the hot tub is out of service before you book our cottage. Because of this, a full refund will NOT be issued if the hot tub is not in service for your stay.

By using the hot tub available in the home, you personally assume all risks involving the use thereof including, but not limited to, the risk of personal injury or death to yourself and others, as well as potential damage to property while using the hot tub, whether negligent, intentional, foreseen or unforeseen.

Writer's Cove -Chapter One is nestled in a wooded setting just three blocks from Douglas Beach. This 2 BR, 1 Bath duplex includes a seasonal room for extra space. Sleeping accommodations for 4-6 with fold out queen sofa sleeper. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need to make a great meal. A large deck includes a gas grill, tables, and a fire pit with plenty of seating. Only a 5 minute walk to Douglas Beach, makes this a perfect location for a getaway with family or friends.

Chapter One has hardwood floors throughout, an open living and kitchen area.
This two BR unit has one room with a Queen bed and the other with 2 Twins or use the Split King converter. The living room has a pull out queen sofa and seating for 6 with a flat screen 40" HDTV, Cable TV, DVD player, access to Netflix and full WiFi throughout the house. Equipped with games and a library of reading materials to provide you with the perfect relaxing get away. There is a full size washer and dryer in the unit as well. Pets are also welcome with a required pet fee.

The spacious bathroom is located off the primary bedroom and features a large soaking tub with a fully tiled shower, marble tiled flooring and lighted makeup mirror. There is a beautiful large zen like screened in back porch to enjoy your morning cup of coffee with a good book or a glass of wine. In addition there is a sweet front porch with a view of the Kalamazoo River. Take an afternoon stroll through this quaint quiet neighborhood or walk a block away to enjoy a cup of coffee at Respite Cappuccino Court, breakfast at Happy Stance or cocktails at Everyday People among other choices. Also a 1/2 block away is the iconic Back Alley Pizza Joint. Wander just a few blocks away to Wades Bayou, where you can rent a paddle board or kayak and explore Lake Kalamazoo.

One of our favorites is the Farmhouse deli in Douglas, offering everything from house made soup/sandwiches, bakery, salads to prepared meals, perfect to pack a picnic lunch. Also, Saugatuck is just a short walk or bike ride across the bridge with additional boutique shops, eateries and galleries.

Less than a 15 minutes away from Douglas are the best wineries and more including Modales Winery, Fenn Valley Winery, and Virtue Cider. Head over to Cranes Orchard to buy or pick apples, stay for lunch and don't forget a pie flight for dessert. Enjoy a trip to Evergreen Lane Creamery to taste the best local goat cheeses. Also in season enjoy a trip to Summer House Lavender farm with a gift shop full of amazing soaps, essential oils and lavender bouquets.

Built by hand in the 1930s, Redwood is an authentic rustic property with old-times vibe. Had enough of the beach? Take a ride on the Star of Saugatuck, a true stern wheel paddle boat or try the retro boating scene along the scenic Kalamazoo River. Step back in time as you embark on a boating adventure aboard a vintage boat, reminiscent of a bygone era. These retro boats, offer a unique and enjoyable way to explore the river.
The fishing on Lake Michigan is also a great option, you'll need to be an early riser, as the early bird catched the Salmon!!

The large well-furnished deck overlooks the Kalamazoo River, Tower Marina and Mt. Baldhead. A 40 foot boat slip is also available. The condo is a short walk to Downtown Douglas and a short drive or bike ride to Oval Beach, Downtown Saugatuck and Saugatuck Dunes State Park. The perfect spot for a family or couple to enjoy all that Saugatuck and Douglas have to offer.

Welcome to The Shop

The Blacksmith Shop (herein further referred to as The Shop) has a rich history in the quaint town of Douglas, MI. In the early 1920s, Herman Bekken opened the H.M. Bekken Horseshoeing & General Repairing. As one of three blacksmiths in the region, Herman's skills were used to repair all types of plows, wagons, mowing machines, and sleighs. Folks would bring in their tools to get sharpened and the local farmers would come in to have their horses shoed. With the forge's raging hot fire and anvil, Herman was also able to make his own tools such as hammers, tongs, and vices.

Herman and his wife, Jennie, lived above The Shop where they raised their four children: Everett, Howard, Mildred, and Gerald. Herman retired from blacksmithing in 1960 and passed away in 1963. Jennie lived upstairs until her passing in 1985. That's when The Shop building was handed down to their youngest son Gerald. The blacksmith business was no longer in operation, but the upstairs was used as a rental property. A garage was later added on to the building for the tenant's use and the downstairs was used for storage.

When the youngest of Herman and Jennie's children passed away in 2021, the building was entrusted to the next generation of Bekkens. With fond memories of visiting their grandfather, it was their dream to bring The Shop back to life. During the renovation process, they uncovered several of Herman's tools and artifacts that you'll find hanging in The Shop today, along with the original forge and harness rings where Herman would tie the horses while working on them. The Shop has recently been built out into a one-bedroom fully furnished spacious vacation rental property.

The home has a bright open floor plan with a fully stocked kitchen and spacious living quarters. The main bedroom has a king bed with a walk-in closet with plenty of storage. The living room has a queen sofa sleeper. The kitchen is fully equipped with all pots and pans, dishes, and utensils. All new appliances including side by side refrigerator with an icemaker, dishwasher, gas range and oven, and microwave. Stackable washer and dryer located just off the kitchen. Eat-in kitchen as well as a table that seats four.

- "We absolutely loved staying at the Tiny Barn! Besides being soooooo cute and rustic looking, it had all the modern ammenities you could ask for.....tv, wi-fi, appliances, etc. It was very clean and did i say sooo very cute?!! It is in a safe and quiet neighborhood and literally a two minute walk to the beach. We watched a beautiful sunset one night. We could see the water from the balcony off the bedroom in the loft. We loved watching the deer up close everyday. This was a unique and totally different kind of place we've ever stayed and totally recommend it to everyone. Just one thing to note which wasn't a problem for us....someone with mobility issues could have a problem at the top of the stairs accessing the bed in the loft but there is a grab bar there to assist. This updated space is sure to please. The main level great room boasts amazing views of the Saugatuck Harbor. Enjoy the boat parade, the magnificent colors of a sunlit sky, and life on the water. The cozy living room has leather furniture to sink into while you watch a movie on the flat-screen TV. The electric fireplace is perfect for creating ambiance in the evenings.

Using fresh ingredients from the local farmer's market, the fully equipped kitchen will make it easy to cook meals at home. The adjacent dining area has a large picture window overlooking the harbor. Or, head out to the balcony where you can dine al fresco until your heart is content.

The main level queen bedroom offers a separate retreat inside this sanctuary. Walk through the sleeping area to the connected den with sofa sleeper, flat-screen TV with basic cable, and views of the water. Also attached is a full bathroom with a walk-in shower.

Completing the main level is a convenient half bath and laundry room just off the living room.

Head upstairs to the spacious primary bedroom, skylights included, where you can get a good night's rest. Please note, that this space does not have a door and does stay warmer than the main level. This space is bright and airy with vaulted ceilings and views of the water. Enjoy the flat-screen TV or curl up in the cushioned window seat with a good book. The ensuite bathroom is just as spacious with a large walk-in shower and a separate jetted soaking tub for true relaxation.

The upper level does not have a door that separates it from the stairway.
The guest bedroom and den do not have a door between them.
Fire is not allowed on decks or within 10 feet of a structure per the local fire department. Therefore, we are not able to have a grill. There is a large electric grill (like a George Foreman grill) for your use.
There is one assigned parking spot and an assortment of guest spots available on a first come first serve basis.
Due to the vaulted ceilings and heat naturally rising, the upper levels stays much warmer than the main level. We recommend keeping the blinds shut upstairs during the warm summer months.
