Saugatuck allows open container in the "social district" off Butler and Water Streets. Enjoy a beverage from one of the local watering holes and feel free to bring it with you as you walk the riverfront.

Get outside and enjoy the nature that the area has to offer! With the four beach cruiser bikes that comes included with your stay and a plethora of wooded foot and bike trails that lead to the beach, take a pep step through the dunes to find your perfect sunset over Lake Michigan. Getting Around:
This charming modern retreat is within a 15 minute walk of Downtown Douglas and the Saugatuck Chain Ferry which takes you across the Kalamazoo River and drops you in Downtown Saugatuck. Fares are $2/person each way.

The Interurban is a on call public transportation service that services Saugatuck/Douglas/Fennville. Simply call the number and request a pickup. $1 fares each way!

One of our favorites is the Farmhouse deli in Douglas, offering everything from house made soup/sandwiches, bakery, salads to prepared meals, perfect to pack a picnic lunch. Also, Saugatuck is just a short walk or bike ride across the bridge with additional boutique shops, eateries and galleries.

Less than a 15 minutes away from Douglas are the best wineries and more including Modales Winery, Fenn Valley Winery, and Virtue Cider. Head over to Cranes Orchard to buy or pick apples, stay for lunch and don't forget a pie flight for dessert. Enjoy a trip to Evergreen Lane Creamery to taste the best local goat cheeses. Also in season enjoy a trip to Summer House Lavender farm with a gift shop full of amazing soaps, essential oils and lavender bouquets.

Welcome to The Shop

The Blacksmith Shop (herein further referred to as The Shop) has a rich history in the quaint town of Douglas, MI. In the early 1920s, Herman Bekken opened the H.M. Bekken Horseshoeing & General Repairing. As one of three blacksmiths in the region, Herman's skills were used to repair all types of plows, wagons, mowing machines, and sleighs. Folks would bring in their tools to get sharpened and the local farmers would come in to have their horses shoed. With the forge's raging hot fire and anvil, Herman was also able to make his own tools such as hammers, tongs, and vices.

Herman and his wife, Jennie, lived above The Shop where they raised their four children: Everett, Howard, Mildred, and Gerald. Herman retired from blacksmithing in 1960 and passed away in 1963. Jennie lived upstairs until her passing in 1985. That's when The Shop building was handed down to their youngest son Gerald. The blacksmith business was no longer in operation, but the upstairs was used as a rental property. A garage was later added on to the building for the tenant's use and the downstairs was used for storage.

When the youngest of Herman and Jennie's children passed away in 2021, the building was entrusted to the next generation of Bekkens. With fond memories of visiting their grandfather, it was their dream to bring The Shop back to life. During the renovation process, they uncovered several of Herman's tools and artifacts that you'll find hanging in The Shop today, along with the original forge and harness rings where Herman would tie the horses while working on them. The Shop has recently been built out into a one-bedroom fully furnished spacious vacation rental property.

The home has a bright open floor plan with a fully stocked kitchen and spacious living quarters. The main bedroom has a king bed with a walk-in closet with plenty of storage. The living room has a queen sofa sleeper. The kitchen is fully equipped with all pots and pans, dishes, and utensils. All new appliances including side by side refrigerator with an icemaker, dishwasher, gas range and oven, and microwave. Stackable washer and dryer located just off the kitchen. Eat-in kitchen as well as a table that seats four.

- "We absolutely loved staying at the Tiny Barn! Besides being soooooo cute and rustic looking, it had all the modern ammenities you could ask for.....tv, wi-fi, appliances, etc. It was very clean and did i say sooo very cute?!! It is in a safe and quiet neighborhood and literally a two minute walk to the beach. We watched a beautiful sunset one night. We could see the water from the balcony off the bedroom in the loft. We loved watching the deer up close everyday. This was a unique and totally different kind of place we've ever stayed and totally recommend it to everyone. Just one thing to note which wasn't a problem for us....someone with mobility issues could have a problem at the top of the stairs accessing the bed in the loft but there is a grab bar there to assist. We definitely plan to stay there again on our next trip to the area. "

This updated space is sure to please. The main level great room boasts amazing views of the Saugatuck Harbor. Enjoy the boat parade, the magnificent colors of a sunlit sky, and life on the water. The cozy living room has leather furniture to sink into while you watch a movie on the flat-screen TV. The electric fireplace is perfect for creating ambiance in the evenings.

Using fresh ingredients from the local farmer's market, the fully equipped kitchen will make it easy to cook meals at home. The adjacent dining area has a large picture window overlooking the harbor. Or, head out to the balcony where you can dine al fresco until your heart is content.

The main level queen bedroom offers a separate retreat inside this sanctuary. Walk through the sleeping area to the connected den with sofa sleeper, flat-screen TV with basic cable, and views of the water. Also attached is a full bathroom with a walk-in shower.

Completing the main level is a convenient half bath and laundry room just off the living room.

Head upstairs to the spacious primary bedroom, skylights included, where you can get a good night's rest. Please note, that this space does not have a door and does stay warmer than the main level. This space is bright and airy with vaulted ceilings and views of the water. Enjoy the flat-screen TV or curl up in the cushioned window seat with a good book. The ensuite bathroom is just as spacious with a large walk-in shower and a separate jetted soaking tub for true relaxation.

If Lake Michigan is calling your name, our famous Oval Beach is less than 2 miles away. Happen to be visiting in the winter? Our friends at Landsharks offer snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals to enjoy all the great hiking trails in our area.

The upper level does not have a door that separates it from the stairway.
The guest bedroom and den do not have a door between them.
Fire is not allowed on decks or within 10 feet of a structure per the local fire department. Therefore, we are not able to have a grill. There is a large electric grill (like a George Foreman grill) for your use.
There is one assigned parking spot and an assortment of guest spots available on a first come first serve basis.
Due to the vaulted ceilings and heat naturally rising, the upper levels stays much warmer than the main level. We recommend keeping the blinds shut upstairs during the warm summer months.

The sister cities of Saugatuck and Douglas are full of eclectic eateries, gift shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. You can charter a fishing boat on the Kalamazoo River in Saugatuck or rent a kayak
in Douglas to launch into the river and paddle out to Lake Michigan. There are scooter rentals and dune rides as well. You will not find yourself bored while vacationing in this unique part of Michigan.

Our condominium is part of Northern Lights Condominiums, a vacation complex where you genuinely feel like you are on a getaway. We are located less than 1 mile from the heart of Douglas, less than a mile to Lake Michigan, and within walking distance to many restaurants, bars, breweries, and ice cream shops. Additionally, the downtown of Saugatuck is only a 2 mile drive or bike ride away.

You can ride your bike or walk to Douglas Beach which is only 1.4 miles away. The Lake Michigan Lakeshore is less than 1 mile away and is a great place to bike or walk. Oval beach, a larger beach that is very popular with summer tourists, is only 2.4 miles away. Addionally, only 10 minutes drive from our condominium is Saugatuck Dunes State Park which has miles of hiking trails along the lake shore and a beautiful secluded beach.

1.) All of our rentals are non-smoking.
2.) You and your guests are using our home at your own risk. We nor the owner of the property will be held responsible for any injuries that occur at the vacation rental or for any lost or stolen items. 3.) There is parking for one cars in front of cottage.
5.) Each cottage has a maximum number of guests that is listed on this contract you must verify that it is correct. That number is not to be exceeded - this includes children and adults.
6.) Pets are permitted with Pet fee.
7.) Damages are to be reported during your stay. If we find damage after you vacate, you authorize the charge to your credit card for replacement or repair or provide another credit card number, pay by cash or check. Damages reported upon arrival will not be guests' responsibility.
8.) Cleaners will come to the cottage after you have departed - they will not visit to clean, change linens, or replace towels during your stay. Please contact the office should you need assistance during your stay regarding any cleaning items.
9.) Grills are to be cleaned after each use.
10.) We do not tolerate loud groups and college like parties anytime of the day or night. Drinking games are not allowed on the property. Neighbors must NOT hear you inside or outside the cottage after 10pm nightly per the local ordinance. This is also important because the Room is attached to another room so you must be considerate and aware there is an attached Room.
11.) You are at least 25 years old and will be able to verify with valid identification during your stay if needed.
12.) All common area at the motel is for the use of current guests of the hotel only. Common area can only be utilized for guests whom are currently staying at the motel.
13.) No fireworks.

These rules are strictly enforced due to NEW city and township ordinances. This contract is the only warning you will get. If any rules are not followed all local fines, security deposits and any other charges will be charged to guest and the entire group will be asked to vacate the property. This communication is necessary so that your vacation experience is a good one for your group and our neighboring community. Please ENJOY your stay!

While our office is not staffed full-time, we offer mobile check-in, so you can skip the lobby and go straight to your room upon arrival. Our friendly staff is always just a text or phone call away should you need anything during your stay. We are here to ensure you have a great experience—without the hassle.

Location, Location, Location Blue Star Motel is ideally situated for exploring the best of Saugatuck-Douglas. A block away, you’ll find a grocery store, convenience liquor store, and a laundromat for your convenience. Several dining spots are within walking distance, and the famous beaches of Saugatuck and Douglas are just a short drive away. Plus, with a bike path across the street, it's easy to explore the area on two wheels. We are also just a short walk from the heart of Douglas, with its quaint shops and local charm.

Our motel is located next to the highway, and while our rooms may be cozy, they are clean and comfortable.

Rustic meets contemporary. Beautifully remodeled cabin, barn board, hand hewn & skinned logs. Craftsman touches throughout. More than a place to lay your head Central air wifi cable Located on 20 acres with our other cabins. Full kitchen Close to Saugatuck/Douglas & Lake MI., but the backyard will make you feel far from it all Private wooded trail to the Brewery Low key, organic, farm setting. Our goal is to provide you with a relaxing getaway and we are a phone call or knock on the door away.

The space
We are approximately 1 mile from Douglas Beach, 1 mile to downtown Douglas, and 2 miles to Saugatuck. A quick, easy, scenic ride on the bikes provided.
Things to note: Sorry, but we are not a party atmosphere, we do not allow smoking in the cabins, and no pets, thank you for respecting these guidelines. :)

Please feel free to access the grounds, use the paddle boat, the fire pit, horseshoes, walk the wooded trail to the Brewery. Please ask if you need anything at all!
