The Manse, approached via metal gates, is a charming Grade II listed traditional detached cottage situated in the popular village of South Creake. Just a few minutes drive south of Burnham Market, and ten minutes from the coast at Brancaster or Wells, it is well positioned to explore all of the North Norfolk coast and surrounding countryside. A much loved second home, The Manse provides spacious accommodation for up to six people, with a fully enclosed garden and high quality furnishings throughout. The living space downstairs includes a contemporary kitchen with breakfast bar, separate utility room, dining room and comfortable sitting room. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms and a twin bedroom with an en suite to the master bedroom and a family bathroom. To access bedroom 3 you go through bedroom 2. There is a lawned garden to the front of the cottage and garden furniture for six people. The whole garden area is walled and fully enclosed. Kingfisher, named after the kingfishers we see on the securely fenced moat from time to time has a porch which leads through a stable door to an open plan living/dining area with a dining table, 12 chairs, a high chair, comfortable sofas (one of which is a sofa bed) and a log burner for cold winter evenings. There is a large flat screen TV with freeview, DVD player and surround sound home cinema. There is a fully equipped kitchen with range cooker, microwave oven and washer/dryer plus a large American style fridge freezer for your convenience. There are two en-suite double bedrooms with zip and link beds on the ground floor and also a separate loo. Upstairs there are two super king sized beds and another spacious zip and link bedroom. These three bedrooms are easily large enough to add a zed bed if required which we do supply as well as a travel cot.

3 adjoining pet friendly barns have been sympathetically converted to provide spacious and comfortable accommodation. We provide free wifi, oil fired central heating, range cookers, enclosed and private walled gardens, private parking and built-in barbecues. There are no steps to get into the properties and some double en-suite rooms on the ground floors for those who may struggle with steps. We are happy for pet owners to walk their dogs on leads around the farm where there are great opportunities for bird watching. The barns are situated on the farm itself with views over open countryside and the lovely Sculthorpe Church on the driveway.

The Old Chequers is a lovely six-bedroom (all en suite) house with a large garden, hot tub and games room. The house is perfect for multi-generational gatherings, bringing friends and family together in one luxurious space. Our home features various living spaces, including a sunroom conservatory that gives access to the incredibly private walled garden and the River Burn, which runs through it. The recent renovation added a new games room with a pool table and arcade games, a dedicated workspace and an additional circular dining table (perfect for playing board games).

The TV room, lounge, dining room and kitchen are all on the ground floor, along with one bedroom that is wheelchair accessible. The open-plan kitchen has solid wood worktops, a large freestanding oven and separate grill, hob, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, coffee machine, milk frother, kettle and toaster. Large groups who want to self-cater and enjoy meals together are sure to find the kitchen thoughtfully equipped to a very high standard.

The main dining area has a wine and drinks fridge and drinks serving area, with a dining table that seats twelve (and you can squeeze a few highchairs around it if you need to). You can use the arched window in the dining room to pass food and drinks through to the courtyard and fire pit area where you can relax under the fairy-lit sky above you.

The utility room holds the washing machine, tumble dryer, additional dishwasher, sink and two fridge freezers. We felt it was important to be able to do a big shop in Wells-Next-The-Sea or Fakenham and have enough space to keep it all fresh for your time at The Old Chequers.

The various entertainment spaces have been cleverly divided to cater for all staying in the home. You could sit next to the cosy log burner in the lounge, enjoy a movie on the large corner sofa in the TV room with a surround sound system, or relax in the conservatory overlooking the garden and hopefully be lucky enough to meet some ducklings paddling in the creake. For those who need to work while on their trip, we have a dedicated workspace set up.

The latest addition to our modern holiday home is a separate games room with a stunning pool table, arcade game console and additional TV. The large glass doors open to the garden and promises to be a hub of entertainment for guests of all ages, whether you want to relax or engage in friendly competitions.

The flint stone walled garden has a wood-fired hot tub and a large lawn for kids and pets to run around or play outdoor games. Both the courtyard and the garden have outdoor seating, giving you the option to enjoy al fresco dining either by the fire pit in the pebbled courtyard or on the deck by the hot tub in the garden.

The bedrooms have been thoughtfully furnished with temperature regulating bedding for the different seasons, including top-quality imported down and feather pillows and duvets, and high thread-count cotton linen. All bedrooms have their own en suite bathroom, Bluetooth speaker, wardrobe and exceptional quality mattresses.

The sole downstairs bedroom has an additional entrance facing the driveway, for easy access. The bedroom is wheelchair friendly with a walk-in shower and the super-king bed can be made into twin beds upon request. We can arrange a shower chair if required.

The most magnificent bedroom is, of course, the master. The bedroom overlooks the garden and has a super-king bed, a private dressing room and full en suite featuring a walk-in shower, large freestanding tub and underfloor heating. This bedroom is slightly separate from all the other rooms and also has an ante room with a sofa bed and TV, which is where we often let our own young kids sleep when we visit.

Besides the master, there are 4 further bedrooms upstairs. The second bedroom (which we like to think of as the second master bedroom) has a little more space, a super-king bed that can be split into twin beds upon request, and an en suite with both a bath and a shower. The other bedrooms each have king-size beds and full en suite bathrooms.

The Old Chequers offers a tranquil and relaxing spot where you can disconnect from the world, but we are also connected to high-speed fiber internet with plenty of entertainment options so you are never bored. The house has networked speakers throughout and music can be played simultaneously or separately in each room.

The driveway can accommodate 2 cars with a possibility of up to 4 cars if squeezed in, and has a manual gate so you don't have to worry about a child or dog running out of the driveway. Additionally, parking is available adjacent to the house on Front Street.

Things to note:

We are a dog friendly home, and only ask that guests let us know in advance of any pets that will be staying with them, and respect our house rules during their stay. There is a separate entrance from the pebbled driveway, which is also the side access to the garden. This is the preferred area to leave your dogs if they are being left at the house on their own.

Please be mindful of the creake if you are thinking of booking our home for a family with kids or pets. The small tunnels at either end of the stream in the garden are not fenced off. However, we feel very comfortable with our children playing outside in the shallow water, albeit we do make sure they are supervised.

The log burner has a fireguard to keep little fingers at bay, and the hot tub has a lid to make it child-safe. Logs and all things fire can be found at the local nursery or at the petrol station in Burnham Market.

The Old Chequers is nestled in the quiet village of South Creake on the North Norfolk Coast. It is a wonderful property and is the perfect base for large groups of friends or families looking for a peaceful, relaxing retreat in a great location. Families with young children will be delighted to know that there is a children’s playground located on the village green, as well as a tennis court and bowling green.

We are conveniently located within an 8-minute drive to both Burnham Market and Wells-next-the-Sea and a 10-minute drive to the famous Holkham Estate and Holkham Beach. Our kids absolutely love the extensive Woodland Play Area at Holkham Hall, which features treehouses, climbing frames, swings, slides and sandpits, and also has a special play area for toddlers. There are a variety of beaches on the North Norfolk coast, including Wells-next-the-Sea beach, Holkham beach, the beaches at Hunstanton and Heacham, and many others. Brancaster and Wells-next-the-Sea are great beaches for dog walking, and Cromer is popular for crabbing at the pier.

Swallow has a large idining table which can be extended to seat up to 10 for a family gathering. The bright living space has 2 large sofas and a comfortable arm-chair, for those cosy winter evenings there is also a wood burning stove (first bag of logs and firelighters are complimentary).
Onsite we have fibre broadband, free Wi-Fi and the cottage has a 43"LG Smart TV with Amazon Prime Video and Netflix so you can watch all your favourite shows. There are 3 bedrooms: the Master Bedroom has a king sized bed and leads to a Jack and Jill style family bathroom with an over bath shower, WC and hand basin. There is a single bedroom which has a 3ft single bed and clothes storage. The 3rd bedroom is a double bedroom with 2 x 2ft6" zip and link beds and has an en-suite bathroom with a shower, WC and hand basin. The cottage is supplied with books and games and a Red Kite travel cot, and high chair, other baby friendly extras can be booked in advance of your stay.

OUTSIDE
The glazed patio doors lead out from the living space on to the terrace overlooking a private fenced garden area and out to the shared grassy recreation paddock and play areas, where children can meet new friends and enjoy some freedom in while Mum and Dad can cook up a storm on the charcoal barbecue with a glass of wine whilst keeping an eye on things.
There is ample private parking on site and In the lower car park there is an E.V. charging point. You'll find plenty to do on site, including taking a dip in the luxury indoor heated pool, tennis or pool and table tennis in the games room where there is also a toddler play area.

Down the landing is one of the two twin rooms (both recently equipped with wall-mounted flat screen TV's with integrated Freeview), with feature brick chimney breast and window overlooking pretty side garden. This room has two 3 foot beds but can also be set up as a large single room on request. This room is ideal for two children or a couple.

At far end of landing is the second twin room - a lovely spacious room with views over the village. Down a small step into family bathroom with basin, toilet and bath with electric shower over bath. Also at this end of the landing is the fourth bedroom - a small single with safety window bars - ideal for a child or infant in a travel cot. Large cupboard with spare duvets for guests. Travel cot and high chair available.

Welcome to The Old Chequers

Stepping through the blue front door, you are welcomed into a large entrance hall with a chequered tiled floor. There is a circular dining table where you can enjoy lunch or play board games. The entrance hall provides the central access point to the TV room, lounge, dining room, kitchen, courtyard and the main staircase.

Kitchen and Dining

The modern, open-plan kitchen has solid wood worktops and is well equipped with a large freestanding oven and separate grill, hob, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, coffee machine, milk frother, kettle and toaster. Large groups who want to self-cater and enjoy meals together are sure to find the kitchen thoughtfully equipped to a very high standard. The dining area is beautifully furnished with a solid wood tabletop as the centrepiece of the room, as well as a wine fridge and drinks serving area. The dining table seats twelve and you can squeeze a few highchairs around it if you need to. You can use the arched window in the dining room to pass food and drinks through to the courtyard.

Utility Room

The utility room holds the washing machine, tumble dryer, an additional dishwasher, sink and two fridge freezers. We felt it was important to be able to do a big shop in a nearby town and have enough space to keep it all fresh.

Living Areas

The new games room is an additional entertainment space featuring a pool table, darts, and arcade games. Guests can enjoy a game of pool while watching sports or Netflix on the smart TV, or relax on the couch with some music. Large glass doors bathe the games room in natural light, and the view of the garden is breathtaking.

The living areas have been cleverly divided to cater to all staying in the house. You could either sit next to the cosy log burner in the lounge or enjoy a movie in the TV room, which has a large corner sofa and surround sound system. In a separate room is a dedicated workspace with a mounted screen and high-speed internet. Finally, guests can relax in the conservatory and hopefully be lucky enough to meet our feathered friends on the river with their ducklings. The games room and various living areas really do provide a space for all to enjoy and make our home perfect for families with children or friends on a relaxing retreat.

The house is a tranquil and relaxing spot where you can disconnect from the world if you please. We are connected to high-speed fibre internet, and the smart TV has Netflix, Amazon video, etc. at the click of a button. Networked speakers throughout the house allow music to be played simultaneously or separately in each room.

Walled Garden

The quintessentially British, mature, flint stone walled garden has been planted with a variety of plants, shrubs and bushes. There is a large lawn to enjoy a run-around with the children, play a few lawn games or just watch the river flow by. The garden has a Webber BBQ to flip a few burgers and sear a nice steak or some fist-sized scallops if you are lucky enough to pick some up from the local fishmongers at Burnham Market.

There is a decked area in the garden, which adds a whole new social space in the private garden next to the river. The wood-fired hot tub is filled with fresh water for each use and fits up to 8 people at a time.

Courtyard

The pebbled courtyard on the north side of the house has outdoor seating and a fire pit. It is a cosy corner to tuck away into at night time with the fairy-lit skyline, a dining table to enjoy alfresco dining and a seated fire pit area to keep warm on the chillier evenings.

Bedrooms

All bedrooms have their own en suite bathroom, bluetooth speaker, wardrobe and exceptional quality mattresses. The pillows and duvets are top-quality imported down and feather to ensure they are temperature regulating for the different seasons, and the bed coverings are all high thread count cotton to ensure the best night’s sleep whilst staying at The Old Chequers. Besides the wheelchair accessible bedroom on the ground floor (Bedroom 6), all bedrooms are upstairs.

The master bedroom is positioned above the lounge, which is slightly separate from all the other rooms. To access the master, you first walk through a large dressing room and then enter the beautiful and tranquil bedroom that looks over the walled garden and stream. You can also access this side of the house through its own separate entrance from the pebbled driveway. There is a sumptuous super-king bed, armchair and vanity. The underfloor heated en suite has a large, freestanding bath, a walk-in shower and a double basin. We’ve recently added a bunk bed to this room, so there are more sleeping options for kids. This room also has an extra room, which is referred to as the Ante Room, furnished with a sofa bed and TV. We use it as a bedroom for our younger children when we visit.

Bedroom 2: Upstairs, super-king bed and a full en suite featuring a bath and shower. This room is thought of as the second master bedroom because it has a little more space than the rest of the bedrooms–ideal for a travel cot or blow-up mattress for younger children. The super-king bed can be split into twin beds upon request.

Bedroom 3: Upstairs, king bed with en suite. This king-sized bedroom has been furnished with solid mango wood pieces. The room has an en suite shower and sees the afternoon sun.

Bedroom 4: Upstairs, king bed and en suite with a combined shower-bath. This bedroom basks in the wonderful afternoon sun, which you can enjoy from the armchair, and looks out onto the pebbled driveway.

Bedroom 5: Upstairs, king bed and en suite with a shower. The final bedroom is at the far end of the house and is furnished with a solid wood king-size bed, bedside tables and a matching wardrobe.

Bedroom 6: Downstairs, super-king bed, wheelchair accessible with a wet room en suite. This room was the original entrance to the pub where the bay window now sits and can be accessed via an additional entrance facing the driveway. The bedroom is wheelchair friendly with a walk-in shower and the super-king bed can be made into twin beds upon request.

Parking

The driveway holds 2 cars, but you may be able to squeeze in up to 4. You can also park on Front Street, right next to the house. The driveway is enclosed by a manual gate so you haven’t got to worry about a child or dog running out.

Other Information

We are a dog-friendly home and only ask that guests let us know in advance of any pets that will be staying with them and respect our house rules during their stay. There is a separate entrance from the pebbled driveway, which is also the side access to the garden. This is the preferred area to leave your dogs if they are being left at the house on their own.

Please be mindful of the creake if you are thinking of booking our home for a family with kids or pets. We have very young children and appreciate that the open river can be slightly concerning. However, we feel very comfortable with our children playing outside in the shallow water, albeit we do make sure they are supervised. Dogs can also enjoy paddling in the water, but please note the small tunnels on either end of the stream in the garden, as this is not fenced off.

The log burner has a fireguard to keep little fingers at bay, and the hot tub lid can be closed to prevent accidents. Logs and all things fire can be found at the local nursery or at the petrol station in Burnham Market.

Please let us know in advance if you will need a travel cot so we can ensure this is set up for your stay.

The Thursford Collection, with its much celebrated Thursford Christmas Spectacular is also nearby. Travel just a little further and explore the Norfolk Broads, either on a day launch or on an organised tour. Or, for a change of pace, head into the medieval city of Norwich with its splendid Norman Castle and numerous museums, galleries and attractions. Add in National Trust sites and stately homes such as The Blickling Estate and Holkham Hall and you will see that there really is something for everyone in this part of Norfolk. Fakenham is just 4 miles away with four supermarkets, cinema, flea market and an auction most Thursdays.

Furnished throughout with understated style and comfort foremost in mind, enter the front door and you walk into an attractive open-plan living space - a sitting room that enjoys a view of the village, a dining area and a wood burning stove to keep you extra warm and cosy in cooler months. - "Overall a great stay at this beautiful cottage. Only one small criticism the bath towels would be better if they were bath sheets lol" - "The cottage was beautifully renovated to a high standard and in the perfect location to explore the area. It has everything you need and feels very cosy and welcoming. Although it is on the main road through the village it is very quiet and peaceful. The village of South Creake is very small but pretty. And the food in the Ostrich Pub next door is very good and the staff are very friendly. I only marked this cottage down for two reasons. Although we didn’t spend much time sitting around, the sofa and armchair had seen better days and weren’t that comfortable seem to have lost their ‘squishyness’. And the other reason is the stairs. They are incredibly steep and very hard for older people. Very difficult getting bags and suitcases up to the bedrooms."

- "A great place for a break. The cottage was very cosy in a cool, wet October. Our only problem was the size and condition of the fridge. Could do with being updated. Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo" - "This was a real lastminute.com break and could not fault this place at all! Very comfortable, we was a group of six adults and dogs and didn’t feel cramped at all! Set out just right....a special mention to the little on site restaurant which was an absolute bonus and the food was fantastic! We didn’t so much exploring as was only there for a weekend but Holt was very close by and the pub The Pigs was great for a lunchtime pint. We will definitely be back at some point"
