Just a short (always rewarding) ride from the Kohala coast beaches, the beautiful Pololu Valley, and the Waimea area. Recently constructed and fully remodeled 700 square foot self-contained living space in a private, separate wing of the house. The bedroom and living areas are filled with light, looking out to gorgeous views of the three mountains - Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai. Enjoy the fully equipped kitchen, dining area, cozy reading nook in the living room, spacious bedroom with walk-in closet, brand new bathroom with walk-in shower, wireless internet and Smart TV (movies, tv shows and music channels). We recently installed A/C for those warmer summer months.
The teak bench in front of the cottage is a perfect place to sit and watch the clouds play over Mauna Kea. Out the back door off the kitchen, there is a new gas barbecue and table and chairs for dining or enjoying sunsets or the bright starry nights. There is also a storage chest full of beach chairs, boogie boards and snorkel gear for your use.
Our 3-acre property has a large house, recently remodeled to include the guest cottage at one end of the house. I live in a separate wing on the other end of the L-shaped home. The two living spaces are separated by a covered lanai with fencing and landscaping providing privacy for each dwelling.
I respect my guestsʻ privacy and enjoy my own. I am also happy to answer questions you may have to help you enjoy your stay on the island. I will be happy to steer you to my favorite restaurants, beaches, walking trails and island adventures.
We enjoy gardening and have planted fruit trees and many flowers that attract abundant bird life. I'm happy to share fruit that is ripe during your stay, including banana, lilikoʻi, mango, papaya, avocado, lemon and lime.
Situated on the 'dry side' of Waimea, we are half way between Kawaihae and Waimea town, ten minutes drive from both. The best beaches on the island are 10-15 minutes away.
Located at 1800 foot elevation, our days are most often sunny and warm with occasional island breezes. There are ceiling fans and air conditioning for additional cooling if needed. Temperatures cool down in the evening - perfect for a good nights sleep. Cardinals, doves, finches and other birds fill our quiet 3-acre property with song.

Really enjoyed staying in Waimea (shopping/restaurants 5 mins away) with elevation providing a cooler temperature but a quick and easy trip down to the beaches. Fans in the house and cross breezes were adequate (no A/C). The 3 BDRM Red Ohana is a short distance away (shared driveway) but the high vegetation around the deck makes it all very private. - "The home is just as advertised. Clean, roomy, comfortable, well appointed, and ideally located. The owner is a pro who is attentive and kind. If you are looking for a central location away from the resorts, the Red Ohana house is for you. Thank you Laura for making sure our stay was so memorable!" - "The house is beautifully updated with clean, comfortable furnishings. Plenty of high quality linens for beds, bathrooms and kitchen. Only suggestion would be to have bath mats as the bathrooms are tiled and is slippery when wet. The kitchen is well appointed with full array of table ware, plates, stemware, and glass ware. A complete kitchen for cooking. Several ways to make coffee, from a keurig, to French Press and a pour over melitta style. Electric tea kettle and traditional tea kettle on the stove. The garden and deck are clean and well maintained. The yard has nice grass and plants. The deck had table and chairs and a nice gas grill. For a day at the beach, Boogie boards and beach chairs were available as well. The house is cleaned twice a week and is well maintained. The location was perfect for our needs and would recommend to stay another time."

Aloha, we'd like to share with you the story of our property, Pu'u Menehune, which was, until recently, bull pasture for Parker Ranch. Our pristine 13-acre parcel, located in the heart of Paniola (Hawaiian cowboy) country, is blessed with a meandering stream, abundant waterfalls, and unsurpassed views of sacred Mauna Kea ('White Mountain') volcano.
As you will experience when you hike Pu'u Menehune, this area was the summer playground for Hawaiian Ali'i (royalty) who came to Waimea for its cool upslope weather, open spaces, fun outdoor activities, and beautiful vistas. This is truly God's Country!
The 1920's paniolo style home (bungalow) was formerly part of the historic Waimea Hotel and was saved by the owners from the wrecking ball when it was moved to its present location and painstakingly restored to its former glory -- a project that took the owners over 2-years to complete. Each room is furnished with period antiques and fixtures including an old, double drain, porcelain kitchen sink, period porcelain pedestal sinks in the bathrooms, chandeliers and period lighting in every room, high ceilings with original crown moldings, as well as a wood burning fireplace with ample firewood, and a wrap-around porch to entice you out of the house for the evening. During your stay, you will feel as though you stepped back in time, to a time when life was easier, when relaxation was permissible, when sitting on the front porch was the evening's entertainment.
On a clear, moonlit night, you will be treated to unsurpassed views of Mauna Kea. Feel free to do a 'moon walk' under the star-filled skies. Greet the morning with your fresh cup of Kona coffee and watch the sunrise as you gaze across Parker Ranch's vast pastures and grazing cattle. Watch as the sun dances across two beautiful pu'u (cinder cones) fronting the property graced with frisky horses and Jurassic Park-like scenery surrounding the bungalow-house.
Pu'u Menehune is surrounded by beautiful, native forests, horse and cattle ranches, pastures, and unspoiled forests, and has its own flowing stream with numerous waterfalls and ponds nurturing moss-covered-river-rock. Look and you will be treated to the sight of Ring-Knecked and Kalij Pheasants, Turkeys, California and Francolin Quail, as well as endemic honey-creepers and birds of prey like the Hawaiian owl (Pueo) and Hawaiian hawk (I'o). Enjoy the beauty of your own stream and the many pristine waterfalls which cascade along its course forming numerous ponds. The property is partially forested with endemic Koa, Ohia, Iliahi ("sandalwood"), Hapu'u ferns, Maile, and other native plants. Fruit trees include apple, peach, pear, plum, cherry, orange, tangerine, lemon, lime, and clementine trees. Our 13 acre ranch offers you privacy, peace and quiet, hiking, and nature walks along our pristine stream just a two-minute walk from the house, breathtaking waterfalls, and unsurpassed vistas of Mauna Kea and of the Parker Ranch lands and is vast pastures below, as well as abundant and unspoiled nature -- an artist's and photographer's delight! Our historic, plantation bungalow features 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, a day-bed, a gourmet kitchen having an antique porcelain double sink, modern stainless steel appliances including refrigerator, gas stove with an electric oven located on an island, microwave, kitchen fully furnished with dishes (some antique), glasses (including wine glasses), cutlery, pots, pans, baking pans, spices, and partly stocked pantry. Kona coffee and various teas are sometime available in the 'coffee bar'. Other features include high ceilings with original mouldings, antique lighting, wood burning fireplace, wrap around porch to enjoy those breathtaking views, vistas from every room, cable t.v DVD player, CD stereo (music will never sound better), and a walk-in, slate shower with panoramic views! The two bedrooms have queen sized beds that sleep 4 adults. One bedroom has a princess cradle for an infant or toddler. The living room has a 'day-bed' for a fifth adult or two if you like it cozy. A stacked washer/dryer is also available.

- "My husband and I stayed at this home for a vacation on the Big Island, but he needed to work for a few hours each day--the wifi was excellent. He set up on the dining room table which looks out to Mauna Kea. So many birds! The koa trees planted on the property are habitat for many, many birds. Waimea is at 2700 feet elevation so bring a hoodie! I wore shorts and a hoodie and was comfortable running around town. Hapuna beach is just down the hill, we went almost every day. This property is the perfect location for my husband and me (a birder): quiet, beautiful, close enough to the beach."

- "Our family of 4 enjoyed our stay at the horse house. Since my daughter has loved horses her whole life, the decor was appreciated. Spectacular view of the Mauna Kea. We enjoyed a very clean house with comfortable beds and cool temperatures, much cooler than at the Kohala beaches. I always like staying at a rental with a grocery store nearby which there is here, about 5 minute drive away. Beaches are about a 25 minute drive. We also went horseback riding about 30 minutes away at Paniolo Adventures which was wonderful. The neighbor's barking dog everytime we went out to the the driveway was annoying, but hard to control that situation."

ACCESS Guest shall allow Homeowner access to the property for purpose of repair, cleaning and inspection. Homeowner shall exercise this right of access in a reasonable manner.
PARKING There is a designated, off street parking spot for one vehicle. Vehicle is to be parked only in this designated spot.
WEATHER We experience many climates on The Big Island. Our location is on the sunny side of Waimea Town and we enjoy warm days and cool evenings. Weather can be a factor of any travel and we do not extend weather related refunds.
QUIET TIME Quiet time to be observed from 10:00 pm to 8:00 am.
LAUNDRY ROOM There is a laundry room provided for our guests. Hours of operation are from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm daily. Laundry detergent is provided. If you need different hours let us know and if we can accommodate you we will.
PESTS Bugs and pests are a normal part of our life in the topics both inside and out. You can do your part to keep them to a minimum by keeping screens and doors closed at all times. Also do not leave food sitting out or dirty dishes in the sink as these will attract ants. We do have pest control on a regular basis but our climate does promote pests. If you are having a problem please call us and we will do what we can, but as we said, pests are part of tropical life.
PHONE & INTERNET There is no house phone but there is cell phone reception and free Wi Fi.
MAID SERVICE The home is cleaned before and after your stay but maid service is not included. If you would like maid service during your stay, we can help you arrange it at your own expense. Linens and towels are provided. Beach towels are the only towels that may be removed from the premises.
SUPPLIES We supply hand soap in the bathroom and kitchen, toilet tissue, laundry and dish soap to get you started but unlike a hotel we do not replenish supplies during your stay. Shampoo and body soap is provided. There may be foil, plastic wrap, paper towels and storage bags left behind by other guests but we do not supply these items.
RUBBISH AND RECYCLING Please take all rubbish tightly sealed in bags to the trashcans. Please help our environment by placing garbage, glass and recycle items in the properly marked can. CHECKOUT: PLEASE RETURN THE KEY TO THE LOCK BOX AND TURN OFF ALL LIGHTS, FANS AND APPLIANCES.
LIABILITY WAIVER This vacation rental property is privately owned. The owners are not responsible for any accidents, injuries or illnesses that occur while on the premises or its facilities. The homeowner is not responsible for the loss of personal belongings or valuables of the guest. - "Lovely, quiet place. Cottage is spotless and beautifully appointed, with many thoughtful touches. Kitchen is well furnished, bed is comfortable. Just outside of Waimea, at nearly 2000 ft. above sea level, it is cooler here than the coast, which is nice. No air-conditioning needed, though there are fans for the warmer parts of the day. Hosts are lovely -- don't miss getting a massage from Rose. She has that magic touch. One small caveat: Solar heating does not provide an abundance of hot water. But this is Hawaii -- who needs a long, hot shower, right?"

Our home sleeps 4, with one queen and one double bed. The Hawaiian style and comfortable furnishings are perfect for a family, two couples, friends, or a romantic getaway. Two big-screen TV's and wifi mean the whole family can relax and watch their favorite programs and stay caught up with social media. A welcome gift of some tasty treats from around the islands, and cold bottled water in the refrigerator await your arrival. Located at over 3000 feet elevation- you will enjoy evening tropical breezes and tranquil, cooler temperatures, but still, be just a short drive to get to world-famous beaches.
In the bathroom, you will find bath towels and toiletries you may use during your stay including shampoo and conditioner and other toiletries.
The Hawaiian decor continues in the bedrooms. The Master bedroom has a Queen sized bed and large screen TV. The second bedroom is bright and comfortable with one double bed and lots of sunlight. Boogie Boards, beach chairs, snorkel gear, and a cooler are provided for your use while you stay.

Midway between Hilo and Kona, Honu Hale is conveniently located close to waterfalls, beaches, zip-lining, golfing, and hiking. A day trip to Volcano National park is a once in a lifetime adventure, and Waimea is a great starting point. Tour Parker Ranch located right in Waimea. It is the largest cattle ranch in the country. Waipio Valley is just a 15-minute drive away and boasts stunning views, and a private beach bottom on the hike. Waimea is Paniolo country (Hawaiian cowboys) and is a perfect place to do some horseback riding, or if you are visiting during the 4th of July, the Parker Ranch Rodeo is a must! Don't forget to stop at one of the three farmers' markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays to pick up locally grown produce, and hand made local items and souvenirs!

I am used to the mildew and musky smells from the humidity in Waimea and having the de-humidifier was a huge plus. It was cool during our visit, so the de-humidifier acted as a heater and was a bit loud, but once you closed the bedroom door, wasn't a problem. Very comfortable and well stocked. Thank you Robyn."

This is a beautiful, spacious hale that sleeps two guests. There is a separate master bedroom, ensuite bathroom and is appointed with luxurious linens and a private lanai.
You can shower in the private bathroom or experience a secluded outdoor shower garden under the stars.

- "Wish i could stay forever" - "This was our second time staying at this property. It is half way between Waimea and the beaches. It is clean, quiet and a home away from home. We had everything we needed to cook with as we like to buy fresh fish. We loved the outdoor shower. I read a couple of the books in the library. Love that we can do laundry here! Enjoyed the tangerines and limes that grow here! Loved it that we had beach towels, chairs, snorkel equipment and boogie boards! Matt is great -- so helpful! Highly recommend! Located at over 3000 feet elevation- you will enjoy evening tropical breezes and tranquil, cooler temperatures, but still, be just a short drive to get to world-famous beaches.
In the bathrooms, you will find quick dry bath towels and toiletries you may use during your stay including shampoo and conditioner, lotion, sunscreen, Q-tips, cotton balls, after sun aloe, and other necessities.
The Whale/Ocean theme continues in the bedrooms. The Master bedroom has a Queen sized bed and a flat-screen TV with an attached bathroom. The second bedroom is cozy and comfortable with a double bed. Midway between Hilo and Kona, Honu Hale is conveniently located close to waterfalls, beaches, zip-lining, golfing, and hiking. A day trip to Volcano National park is a once in a lifetime adventure, and Waimea is a great starting point. Tour Parker Ranch located right in Waimea. It is the largest cattle ranch in the country. Waipio Valley is just a 15-minute drive away and boasts stunning views, and a private beach bottom on the hike. Waimea is Paniolo country (Hawaiian cowboys), and is a perfect place to do some horseback riding, or if you are visiting during the 4th of July, the Parker Ranch Rodeo is a must! Don't forget to stop at one of the three farmers' markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays to pick up locally grown produce, and hand made local items and souvenirs!

Located on the dry-side of Kamuela (aka Waimea) our newly appointed Mauna Loa Suites offer you stunning views of both our islands tallest mountains Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa as well as the vast Pacific Ocean. We are in a quiet and private residential location with a large populous of cheerful birds to serenade you daily.
Our suites include 2 large bedrooms on the top floor as well as a spacious living room with large flat screen TV which includes the option of a pull-out queen murphy bed perfect for added guests or parents traveling with kids. Our kitchenette features a resort size refridgerator along with 2 stove top gas burners as well as a comfy seating nook. There are two full-size bathrooms one with large soaking tub double sinks and the other with resort style multi-headed shower.
By far the most attractive feature of our suites would we the wrap around roof-top lanai area where you are may want to enjoy a nice breakfast while planning your day's events and later that evening come back to a glass of wine while you watch the sunset give way to the Milky Way!
We are also centrally located and a conveniant 15-30 minutes away from a variety of beaches, charming towns, resorts, farmers markets, upscale shopping and restaurants/eateries.

HISTORY OF HOME:
Completed in 1995 the home was commissioned by Sanderson Sims who partnered with Taliesin Associated Architects, John Rattenbury and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to bring the unbuilt plan to life. Originally conceived for the Cornwell Family in Pennsylvania in 1954, the 3,700 sq. foot passive solar hemicycle home embodies FLW's principles of organic architecture in which the structure blends harmoniously with the natural landscape. A series of towering glass doors topped with windows reveals floor to ceiling views along the entire span of the home. The second floor appears to float over the expansive curved main living area and is in fact suspended from the beams in the hidden steel frame circumnavigating the home.
The home has rounded walls made of coral aggregate block from Oahu, FLW's signature Cherokee-red concrete floors, and is built into a hill offering indoor/outdoor living that is sheltered from the consistent trade winds. It is furnished with licensed reproductions of original FLW-designed furniture including his Barrel chairs, Origami chairs from 1949, and Taliesin floor lamps. The home has extensive built-in seating per the FLW design, as well as custom built furniture to integrate with the home's round walls. A series of opaque skylights bring natural light into the home and warm lighting behind opaque glass illuminates the house at night.

Waimea (or Kamuela) is primarily known for its cowboys, rodeo’s, and prime horseback-riding. There are however many more activities that can be enjoyed from Waimea, and most popular of all, the most beautiful beaches on the Island are only 15 mins away by car.
Nearby, Waipi’o valley is one of the most scenic places on the Big Island and offers stunning vistas and many miles of hiking trails and a black sand beach. Of course, there are also several options in town that you should not miss when passing through. Also check out the historic sugar plantations towns on the North coast such as Hawi and Honokaa, both a short drive away. Day trips to Kona and Hilo are both easy from our central locations.
Activities and attraction that are specific to Waimea: Think of visiting the Parker Ranch, farmers markets or the local brewpub. Check out the schedule at the Kahilu Theatre which brings world class acts to town and local acts at their smaller theatre, the Mike Luce.
ACTIVITIES AND ATTRACTIONS IN WAIMEA
If you like going local as well as good breakfasts, we suggest you go for breakfast at one of Waimea’s Saturday farmers markets for a good start of your day. At night, you can get your fill (and Mexican food) at the Big Island Brewhaus, which serves very tasty homemade beer and is another “must-taste” in Waimea.
THE BIG ISLAND BREWHAUS on the Big Island started selling their homemade beers on march 4th 2011. Its owner has won over 30 national and international awards before opening his own place. This place is definitely worth a visit.
Parker Ranch VISIT THE PARKER OR ANNA RANCH TO LEARN ABOUT HAWAIIAN COWBOYS
The Parker Ranch on the Big Island was once upon a time the largest ranch in the united states. Their history is interwoven with that of the American presence in Hawaii, and nowadays they also organize very interesting horseback riding excursions. Read more about the Parker Ranch in Waimea. Another old Ranch house you can visit is the Anna Ranch (which also hosts a weekly farmers market, see below). They host a “Historic ranch house tour” 4 days / week where you can learn about the history of ranching on Hawaii, which goes as far back as the days of King Kamehamea I.
WAIMEA FARMERS MARKETS
There are several farmers markets in and near Waimea: The largest markets in Waimea are the Waimea Town market (open Saturday between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.), the Waimea Homestead farmers market (open Saturday between 7 a.m. and noon) and since April 2012 the Waimea mid-week market at the Pukalani stables (open Wednesday between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.).
PETROGLYPHS
Petroglyphs are images carved in stone, and offer a unique view into the history of Hawaii. Some petroglyphs date back to the 16th century – only one century after Columbus first landed on American soil! There are two petroglyph fields west of Waimea: the Waikoloa Petroglyphs and the Puako Petroglyph field.
LUAU AND HULA PERFORMANCES
A Luau show is a good way to experience local food and culture, but there are more (and cheaper) ways to do so. Close to Waimea you can find these shows at the resorts on the north Kona coast.
WAIPI’O VALLEY
Waipi’o valley and black sand beach.
once upon a time was densely populated and home to old Hawaiian kings . Now however, Waipi’o valley is mostly lush wilderness interspersed with taro fields and a couple of dozens of inhabitants. The valley is about one mile wide and six miles deep and boasts a gorgeous black sand beach.
POLOLU VALLEY kohala, landslide, sea cliffs
Pololu valley is the most northern of the impressive valleys that are carved into the Kohala volcano at the lush green pastures of the Kohala region on the Big Island.
The spectacular views of the valley and the steep cliffs that end in the ocean are worth a trip on their own, but the real thing to do here is hiking to the black sand beach at the valley floor! There also are some pretty cool things to do close to Pololu valley to make your visit into a small road trip.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES IN AND AROUND WAIMEA
Waimea can be found at an elevation of nearly 3000 ft. in the north of the Big Island close to some great beaches on the Kohala coast and spectacular hikes in and around Waipi’o valley. The crisp, clean skies at night also make Waimea a great place to turn your eyes up for stargazing.

ATV tours are a fun way to explore the beautiful difficult to access places such as the wild forests and cliffs on the Kohala coast. Close to Waimea there are two tours that take take you on a 10+ mile drive through private lands with stops on the way at scenic points, historic sites, and waterfalls
BEACHES
The Beaches are one of the main attractions of the Big Island and are great for being lazy, snorkeling, surfing or what not! Some of the best beaches of the Big Island can be found at a short drive just west of Waimea.
GOLFING
The Big Island is known as the golf capital of the state, and in Waimea you are in close proximity of almost half of the golf courses on the Big Island.
HIKING
Waimea and the surrounding hills and valleys are good for some of the most spectacular hiking on the island. Waipi’o valley and Pololu valley are prime picks, but by far not the only ones.
HORSEBACK RIDING
Several ranches around Waimea offer the opportunity to explore their (often very large) range as part of a guided tour of the pastures with spectacular views of the coastline and peaks. It is also possible to make it of the range and explore other spectacular parts of the island such as for example Waipi’o valley.
STARGAZING
Hawaii is one of the world’s best places for stargazing, and Waimea with its clear skies and close proximity to Mauna Kea is a good place to start.
SCUBA DIVING
Scuba diving on Hawaii is a great way to get away from the crowds and enjoy the Big Island underwater paradise on your own. Waimea is close to west coast of the Big Island which is one of the best places for this kind of adventure.
SNORKELING
Just a short drive to the west you can find some great snorkeling spots and beaches. Warm, clear water, plenty of fish and coral reefs mixed in between the lava rocks make for a stunning snorkel.
WATERFALLS
The steep cliffs of the northern valleys are home to impressive waterfalls. One of these is part of our list of the 5 most easily accessible, biggest and most popular waterfalls.
ZIPLINING
Ziplining is an activity where you are attached with a harness to a rope that is strung between a high and a low point. The ziplines are built high above scenic areas and features such ravines, jungles, meadows, and forests, and there are plenty of those around Waimea.

Located on the sunny west side of the Big Island enjoy sweeping ocean views and stunning Hawaiian sunsets. Set between Kohala and Waikoloa Beach Resort on the North Western side of the island, Mauna Kea Beach and Hapuna Beach are just a 5 minute drive down the coast and Kamuela(Waimea) is only 10 minutes away. This is a perfect place to heal, meditate and get mind stability during this trying time.
With a wrap around balcony that gives a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean and nightly sunsets, enjoy breakfast or dinner with a view. Once the sun sets you’ll be treated to one of the best places in the world to see the stars, all from the comfort of your own balcony. The house has a newly finished kitchen with quartzite countertops and stainless steel appliances. 2 Bedroom 2 bath, one with Japanese style deep bath and one with jacuzzi bath tub. Each bedroom has a queen bedroom.

The house is shaped like an octagon and is lifted to ensure a better view. If you are unable to climb stairs this is not the property for you. The house is situated on a 3.5 acre small family farm and is surrounded to the North by Parker Ranch land as far as the eye can see. Kamuela is a short drive up the hill where you can enjoy farmers markets on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s as well as shops and dining. Spencer beach and world famous Mauna Kea Beach are in 5 minutes drive. Waikoloa Beach Resort is just 20 minutes away and the South and Kohala Town is a little over 30 minutes to the North.
