- "This was a magical experience. So private, beautiful, and serene. Loved all the employees as well. This was possibly the most idyllic setting I've ever had the pleasure of staying at; the grounds around the main property are like a movie set. It was impossibly pretty, and the hiking trail they set up around the multitude of tropical plants they grow there was a lot of fun to walk. We swam in the pool where the waterfall was flowing, but the water was a little too high to try and get up underneath the falls itself. We had a wonderful night's sleep away from the bustle of town; we slept with our windows open and during the night one of the house cats decided it wanted to sleep in the bed with us, so we made a little space for our new friend. If you're looking for a unique experience in Hilo I'd highly recommend this incredible property. We only stayed one night so I can't comment on a lot of the hospitality outside of the excellent breakfast we had, but I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that it would all be equally great. "

- " It was my first time staying at the property. The shared bathroom and shared kitchen was concern at first, but I got used to after the first night. On the first night, there was another guest sleeping on the couch in the shared living room. That MF snored like a loud dying pig. The walls are not that thick and I could hear him from my room. But, liked that the room opened to the balcony. The room, Room 2, where I stayed was close to a highway so the traffic noise was bearable, but the traffic died down in the evening. The balcony also has two plastic Adirondack chairs where I sat every morning watching the sunrise, if you could look beyond the power cables that sometimes interfered with the view. The property was within 20 min of where I needed to go. There’s a McDonald’s with an all-day/all-night drive through; would get my coffee and breakfast and sit on the balcony waiting for the sunrise. It would be nice to have a Keurig that is connected to the plumbing so no need to refill. There’s also a full size fridge/freezer where you can store your leftovers."

The sun and moon rise over the ocean as you watch the wonders unfold from your comfy rocking chair OR swinging bed on the lanai. Birdsong is the beautiful sound track on this private farm located at the end of a dead end country road. Relax as you walk through the orchards and please, sample the fruit...that's when it is best!
The COTTAGE is bright, clean, and furnished with all you will need. The 'BAMBOO SLEEPING CHAMBER' offers a KING size 'sleep number' bed with dual controls for firmness. A FULL size futon is inside, and outside on the LANAI is the QUEEN size 'HANGING BED'. The 32” LCD TV in the bedroom is equipped with Hulu live TV, Hulu on demand, ESPN, Disney+, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. The guest house is also equipped with smart locks, smart smoke/carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguish, baby proof outlet covers (available when needed), and recycling station. Finally, for guest traveling with babies and infants, we offer a clean and extremely well maintained Pack-N-Play and high chair.

Simply put, this property sits on one of the most gorgeous ocean-front locations in East Hawaii. Unlike other ocean-front homes, you will not need to walk to the end of a yard to appreciate the Pacific waves. Here, you will feel as if you are on a ship. Simply step out onto the deck, look down and there is the Pacific ocean lapping at the shoreline 100 feet below you. We have actually fished off the deck. We believe the quality of this view and proximity to dramatic breaking waves are unique among vacation rentals in East Hawaii. This is particularly so considering it is only a couple of short miles from quaint Hilo town, the seat of Hawaii County. During the whale season, humpbacks will breech and frolic so close to the house that, on occasion, it will seem as if they are putting on a show just for you. Sometimes the cove below is visited by schools of spinner dolphins, which number in the hundreds. At almost anytime, you can look out from the windows or deck and see surfers sliding down the face of silver waves at nearby Honoli'i beach. On most days, a giant cruise ship will sail out of the dawn and past the house in the morning and then past the house again at sunset, as it leaves Hilo Bay, festooned with a thousand glittering lights.

Please know that this is an older style Hawaiian home. If you are seeking luxury, you'll have to look elsewhere. The house is built from Redwood and is a single wall construction home. In other words, wood boards for walls, not the stud variety. Some of the doors are pocket doors as opposed to swing doors. Please don't expect the level of sophistication that you will find at resort properties. This is a simple house, built for a local family back in the 1950s. We have undertaken some modernization but essentially it is the same charming house that was constructed all those years ago.

The house is a 40 minute drive from Volcanoes National Park and a brief three minute drive from Hilo. It is perfectly located for exploring East Hawaii and a spectacular hour and a half drive from the beaches and town of Kona.

Aside from the spectacular view, one of the benefits of staying next to the ocean is the lack of pesky mosquitoes. The ocean breeze, which will keep you cool, also serves to drive most of them away. Unfortunately, the Big Island has been invaded by coqui frogs in recent years, which make a loud (not altogether unpleasant) chirping noise in the evening. Many B&Bs and vacation properties here actually supply their guests with earplugs. Luckily, the ocean breeze also keeps most of the coquis at bay. You will hear some chirping but it is extremely unlikely that you will find the noise too intrusive.

The house has a large kitchen and living room with picture windows overlooking the ocean and across the bay to Hilo Town. There is a master bedroom with a king-sized bed and french doors leading onto the deck and an outdoor shower. The second bedroom has a full and a twin bed. Each of the upstairs bedrooms has a large TV..

The living room features leather furniture and a gas fireplace for those very occasional dips in temperature. We have deliberately not put a TV in the living area as we hope that you will enjoy the spectacular view, uninterrupted by flickering images and perhaps read, chat or partake in some of the family games we have left for you. However, there is double-speed wireless internet connection throughout the house should you need it for your own devices. You will find binoculars for observing the whales, surfers, dolphins, cruise ships, sailboats and Hawaiian outrigger paddlers.

The deck features a large, expandable teak dining table with chairs. It is doubtful that you will want to eat indoors once you have experienced the pleasure of ocean-front dining, although there is an additional dining table in the living room, should you choose to. There is an additional table with all-weather chairs and if you need it, a folding table. Should you wish to entertain, there is ample seating for your guests. For relaxation, there are teak deck-chairs and a comfortable, quilted double hammock in which to swing to the sound of breaking waves. Should you wish, grab a pillow with a blanket and let the hammock rock you to a wonderful night's sleep under the stars.

The large kitchen is full equipped with everything you need for comfort and convenience: extensive granite counter-tops, a double-door stainless steel fridge with water and ice maker, a dishwasher, garbage disposer, a Keurig coffee maker with a complimentary selection of coffees, large microwave, blender, rice-cooker, slow-cooker, toaster and range. There is ample china and silverware for all your dining needs. Should you need them, you will find coolers for taking on your island adventures.

Outside, you will find a kayak, life-vests, boogie boards and snorkeling equipment. Please feel free to use them to enjoy the magnificent Pacific ocean, which undoubtedly will provide you with many happy memories during your stay in Hawaii. You will also find tennis rackets and balls as well as some other beach games to enjoy.

I have noticed that some vacation rental owners claim that their properties are much shorter driving distances to Hilo than is possible. Please bear in mind that any oceanfront property in lower Puna, claiming to be within the Hilo district, is at least a 50 minute drive from town, often a lot more.

Our country estate is in Onomea, 6 miles north of Hilo, on 5 tropical acres with garden and ocean views. Onomea Guest Suite is a private cottage with garden views of flowering royal Poinciana trees, sweeping monkey pod trees, mango, lychee, mountain apple trees, coconut palms, and many varieties of other palms. The most repeated description by our guests is 'peaceful'. The suite has a studio layout... bedroom, living room and kitchenette all in one ample main space, and a lovely stone-tiled bath with high ceilings and gorgeous light. Guests love the shower which feels like its outdoors because of all the high windows above the shower space. The covered lanai is enjoyable rain or shine for dining or relaxing. Our royal palm-lined road is one of the loveliest in all of Hawaii. Artists frequently come to paint it! Within walking distance is the old donkey trail to Onomea Bay, a breathtaking bay along the old Scenic Highway. You can also walk to the Hawaii Botanic Gardens and What's Shakin' Smoothie Stand (fresh fruit smoothies, wraps, sandwiches, coffee, tea.....)and by car, we are equi-distant to Volcano National Park, Waipio Valley and Mauna Kea Visitors Center, just of many other attractions in the area. A queen bed, plus a twin bed provides a comfortable sleeping for up to three. The kitchenette has enough cooking appliances that you won't miss the stovetop or oven. You'll find the barbecue on your lanai and many kitchen appliances on the countertop or in the cabinets.

A few notes about our guest suite....and us! .......
Our guest space was completed in March 2011, a project lovingly created over two years. The bathroom and shower are wheelchair accessible and there are no steps between parking and entry to suite. My wife and I live in the main house which is an entirely separate building attached by a breezeway and a central courtyard with a fishpond and burbling fountain. I am usually available to help you with directions, dining suggestions or simply to come up with extra pillows!
By car, within 10 minutes, are the magnificent 419 foot high Akaka Falls, the charming village of Honomu; and the nearby city of Hilo, center of commerce on the east slope of Mauna Kea and home to the renowned Hilo Farmers Market.
Some other activities we recommend you think about during your stay, here on the east side of the Island of Hawaii......
Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden (1.3 miles away and a lovely walk on country roads), Volcano National Park, horseback riding in Kohala or Waipio Valley; a zipline adventure; several nearby beach parks, (Richardsons, Carlsmith, Honolii), Liliokulani Park and Japanese garden, Akaka Falls, Rainbow falls (there are a host of other waterfalls you'll see driving along the Hamakua coast) snorkeling, photography, hiking; bird watching; a visit to the 13,980 foot summit of Mauna Kea where 12 international telescopes are redefining our understanding of the heavens the Lyman Museum, the Tsunami Museum, the Hilo zoo, Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut farm and factory, the lovely scenic highway(walking distance from us) and the old 'red road'.... both bring to life a Hawaii long gone in most other parts of Hawaii.

- "Well located for visiting Hilo, Volcano, many other sites on the Hamakua coast. The host, Randall, is exceedingly helpful and friendly. The cottage perfect for a couple. We often did not wish to leave the view from the lanai." - "My husband, five year old and I stayed here for 3 days. We really enjoyed our stay! It was a beautiful open floor plan, artistic decor with big slider windows leading out to the patio. At night there was a wonderful cross breeze and sounds of geckos and coqui frogs floating on that breeze. It was in a convenient spot, not directly in town but close enough to go out for food, drinks, beaches, etc. The owners were kind and quiet. Their dog was such a sweetheart, our daughter loved the encounters with him and the chickens! Beds were comfortable, shower was pretty amazing. Amenities were as described just read them over. Kitchen has no oven but we got by just fine w their electric appliances for cooking. I would highly recommend this space for a small family or couple."

The sun and moon rise over the ocean as you watch the wonders unfold from your comfy rocking chair OR swinging bed on the lanai. Birdsong is the beautiful sound track on this private farm located at the end of a dead end country road. Relax as you walk through the orchards and please, sample the when it is best!
The COTTAGE is bright, clean, and newly furnished with all you will need. The master suite offers a KING size 'sleep number' bed with dual controls for firmness. A FULL size futon is inside, and outside on the LANAI is the QUEEN size 'HANGING BED'. (This bed has become a favorite with our guests, who sleep, nap, read and talk while swaying in the breeze, taking in the beauty.) Walk-in shower and pedestal sink in the cottage bath. Laundry facilities, with all supplies, are available for our guests and just steps away from the cottage.
Behind the cottage is our citrus grove, where lemons, limes and oranges can be found in abundance, while the lychee orchard drops off in front of you. There’s almost always a stalk of “apple” bananas hanging on the lanai, and don’t forget the pineapples growing along one side. Bring some groceries and you are ready to settle in.

The property is just across the street from the amazing World Botanical Gardens and the Botanical World Adventures where you will be welcomed by the staff and given special rates. There are guided zip line, Segway and walking tours at the gardens for an array of fun just outside your front door. You will even come away with new understanding of the plants that surround you during your stay.

Within minutes there are surf and swimming spots like Hakalau Beach Park to dip in the water or boogie board. Less than an hour drive in either direction is the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, golfing, magical driving tours, Hilo farmer's market (20 minutes away), ATV tours and so much more! Just 15 miles from Hilo, 30 miles from Waipio Valley, 1 hour from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Over 200 mature fruit trees are on property. Seasonal Lychee, Emperor Lychee, Rambuton, Mango, Mangosteen, Atemoya and Papaya will be included in the welcome/Breakfast fruit bowl. We may have a litter of puppies 2-3 times a year on the property. Puppy noises , some barking can be heard during business hours, feeding times 8-10. Private and separate from the main house, guest studio in lovely Hakalau village community. This is an adorable and private room at the back of our detached garage. Easy access and parking, comfortable queen bed, desk space, private bath, spacious shower, HD Smart TV, cable, high speed WiFi and kitchenette. Lush landscaping and bistro garden area.
A short walk from the house is a spectacular rainforest hike down to the shoreline. Surfing, ziplining, waterfalls, and much more within a 15 minute drive from the house.

Also not far away is Akaka Falls and Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. Shop in historic Hilo Town and get fresh produce at the Farmers Market. Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots are just a heartbeat away. Coconut Island is awesome for dipping in the ocean and maybe catching a glimpse of sea turtles.

- "For the money, this property is excellent! Home is in a really nice and quiet neighborhood with a beautiful view of Onomea Bay and overlooks the bioreserve and gardens. There was even an ice chest and beach chairs available to use. The property was clean and the owner was very easy to communicate with through the entire process. My only recommendation is to make sure you bring everything you need in terms of toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, and bath soap) or cooking staples (cooking spray, sugar, salt, pepper, etc.) since those are not provided. Coffee and filters were provided."

Local attractions include Lyman Museum, East Hawaii Cultural Center, historic Palace Theatre, Pacific Tsunami Museum, Imiloa Astronomy Center, UH Hilo Performing Arts Center and Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens. Hilo Farmer's Market is a favorite for fresh, local produce. The Merrie Monarch Festival, Hilo's premier hula competition, and cultural events are held annually in April. East Hawaii's black sand beaches and freshwater pools are some of the bests for snorkeling, diving, surfing, paddleboarding, kayaking, swimming with turtles and tropical fish, or watching the whales offshore. Sat on the deck every morning to watch the sun rise over the ocean. Beautiful trees and flowers, cute baby goats and geese next door, so relaxing! I had also heard that Hilo now has areas that don't feel as safe. Not the case at all here. We felt like we were outside of the city and in a lush oasis, but it was close by Hilo with no problem at all going in for dinner, etc. This home is also closer to VolcanoNP, which we visiting one full day. The owners were are extremely responsive and very friendly. When we're back in Hilo, we'll definitely stay here again!"
