The Big Island is our home and we go to great lengths to help you feel at home too. This spacious and beautifully furnished one bedroom condo is single level with absolutely no steps. Although it is considered a condo, there are no upstairs or downstairs neighbors, only the back wall of the closet is shared. Hale KeKai is unit #23 at the Sea Mountain Resort. The lanai (patio) is very private. Speaking of the lanai, “Wow!” is the usual response. Sweeping unobstructed ocean views that blend gently without interruption into an incredible mountain view. This is Hawaii, your Hawaii.
A high quality king size bed in the master bedroom will combine with the soft breezes and gentle lull of the waves to bring calm wondrous dreams of the beauty of the real Hawaii. The living and dining areas also have sweeping ocean views and are outfitted tastefully yet comfortably as this is as much our home as yours. The living area also boasts a fold out sofa bed that we have slept on ourselves and is very comfortable.

This is a true one-bedroom unit, not a small studio unit that is (often) described as a one-bedroom unit.
This unit at Colony One, Sea Mountain, is a full one bedroom unit with a king-size bed in the bedroom on the lower level, and the living room, dining and kitchen on the upper level. There are great views of the sunrise from the lanai, from where you can also hear and watch the ocean. Punalu'u black sand beach is a 15-minute walk from the front door.

The living room contains a queen-size sleeper sofa that comfortably sleeps an additional two people. The room has a vaulted ceiling with a ceiling fan. It has a 37' flat-screen TV.

The fully-equipped and recently remodeled kitchen also contains a washer for your convenience. There is a drying rack which can be used within the condo, (NOT out on the lanai). The dryer is only for a very few small items. Coin operated facilities on site are for almost all loads.

This condo is part of a small cluster of about 70 units. The grounds are perfectly maintained, and include a pool/hot tub/grills. The condo overlooks SeaMountain Golf Course,** the SeaMountain golf course is closed until further notice**. About a 5-10 minute walk lies the Punaluu Black Sand Beach, which is a nesting ground for the Green Sea Turtle. Every day it is almost guaranteed to see one or more sunning themselves on the sand. The Volcanoes National Park is an easy 30 minute drive up the road.
The condo itself has been completely renovated, with new furniture, stairs, bed, etc.

This was a perfect midpoint, right next to Pu'unaluu Beach and a quick drive to Volcanoes National Park. Tom and Christen's condo is a bit more private within the development as the lanai is off the main pathway, still with a partial ocean view. Very comfortable bed and bath! Development has a decent pool and hot tub in the common area and is quiet. Keep in mind that closest gas is back up the road in Na'alehu, and no close grocery stores, so come with food options all planned out. We had a wind storm that knocked the power out overnight, owner's communication regarding that and the weather advisory was much appreciated. Would happily stay there again!"

Relax and reconnect in one of the most stunning and serene locations in all of Hawaii! Sea Mountain Resort is a truly magical place, surrounded by beauty in every direction. Looking mauka (towards the mountains) you’re treated to lush green views of the slopes of Mauna Loa with its coffee plantations and macadamia nut farms, and makai (towards the ocean) you’ll find stunning lava rock and palm tree-lined ocean views as far as the eye can see.

Unit #71 is a sunny and spacious ocean view studio unit that can sleep up to 4, with a queen bed in the bedroom area and a queen pull-out sofa bed in the living room. The bedroom alcove includes large windows on two walls with ocean and lanai views and louvers for air flow, and a large closet and bedside dressers with room for storage. Located inside the closet you will find plenty of hangers, extra bedding, an iron and ironing board should you find a need for them, and a clothes drying rack for your wet swimsuits and towels for use on the lanai. The bathroom has a walk-in shower with a rain shower head and fun tropical fish tiles, and shampoo/conditioner/body wash for your use. The kitchen is equipped with everything you will need for your stay including a full-size refrigerator with freezer, stove/oven, microwave, auto drip coffee maker/grinder, new NutriBullet blender, rice cooker, electric kettle, toaster, BBQ tools, and many pots, pans, cooking utensils and dishes. You will also find some spices, salt, pepper and cooking oil. The living area includes a new 42” smart TV for streaming or cable, some books and games, and both a ceiling and tower fan. There is a desk for your use, and wifi is provided. Ocean views from kitchen, living area and bedroom.
The expanded lanai offers two separate sitting areas, one for dining and enjoying the view, and a more private sitting area shielded by lovely tropical plants. The lanai is our favorite place to eat our meals, have our morning coffee while enjoying the sunrise views, or relaxing with a glass of wine at night while stargazing. The night sky views here are amazing due to the lack of city lights. You probably have never seen so many stars before, it’s amazing! There is plenty of room on the lanai or on the grassy area in front of the lanai to do yoga (yoga mats included!). The distant sounds of the ocean, the rustling of the palms in the warm breeze and the bird songs, combined with the dramatic view of the waves crashing against the black lava rock coastline is so breathtaking and intoxicating, you may want to spend most of your time right here!

Just a few steps away down a winding path you will come to the lovely pool area with refreshing swimming pool, a lava rock design hot tub, gas BBQ grills, bathrooms, an outdoor shower, ice machine, koi pond with waterfalls, beautiful landscaping with tiki torches, and plenty of tables, chairs and lounge chairs. With the sweeping ocean and mountain views and the warm tradewinds it’s impossible not to feel completely relaxed here!

The unit is conveniently situated near two different parking lots. You can choose to enter the unit either through the front door, where you will find a small cabinet for storage and descend down a short flight of stairs to the living area, or you can enter through the lanai door and avoid the stairs, drop off your sandy gear, and use the hose to rinse off after your day at the beach. There is no air-conditioning in the unit but we do have a ceiling fan plus tower and table fans. Usually with all the windows and doors open you will find that the tradewinds keep things comfortable. If the unit does get too hot it shouldn’t last long. To cool off, we like to head down to the pool or the beach for a dip or just to relax in the shade.

Here at Sea Mountain Resort you will find yourself in a secluded and peaceful oasis surrounded by nature. This is unspoiled Hawaii, far from the highrises and crowds of Waikiki. It’s the only resort on this side of the island, and the closest resort to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the #1 tourist attraction on the Big Island. It’s also the closest resort to both the island’s most popular black sand beach and it's only green sand beach, and a short drive from countless other attractions and activities, including ancient Hawaiian historical sites, lava caves, and coffee plantation tours. The famous Punalu’u Bake Shop is just 10 minutes away in the quaint town of Na’alehu, offering sweet bread, malasadas (Portuguese donuts) and other goodies. In town you will also find several local restaurants and coffee shops, as well as a park with a playground, and a farmer’s market each Wednesday and Saturday.
A short walk from the resort brings you to Punalu’u Beach with it’s gorgeous black sand, palm trees, water lily-filled pond, daily visits from Hawaiian sea turtles, and a lifeguard on duty. Here you can play in the waves, take a swim or snorkel with the tropical fish and turtles, or relax in a beach chair or hammock strung between two palm trees, napping or reading a good book. Everything you need for a fun-filled day at the beach is included in your condo rental: beach chairs, beach towels, umbrellas, hammock, snorkel gear and ice chest/coolers.

(Some important things to note)
Sea Mountain is in a remote location, about 1 hour 45 minutes from the Kona airport and 1 hour 10 minutes from the Hilo airport. A car is a must as public transportation is very limited. You will want to stock up on groceries in Kona or Hilo before you head to the resort as there is very little available nearby. Pahala, about 10 minutes away heading towards Hilo, has a gas station, a small market and a small Long’s Drugs. This is also where the Ka’u Coffee Mill is located, with coffee tasting, gift shop and free tours. Na’alehu, also 10 minutes away but headed towards Kailua-Kona, has a few restaurants and coffee shops along with the Punalu’u Bake Shop and gift store. The nearest grocery stores are in the funky community of Ocean View, about 30 minutes away, but selection is limited and prices are high. There are also a handful of restaurants, a coffee shop, and other businesses here. More restaurants can be found in Volcano Village, which is also about a 30 minute drive. Be prepared to drive if you’re planning to go out.
There is no air conditioning or heat in the unit as the temperatures year-round normally stay between 65-85 degrees. There are windows and doors with screens throughout the unit allowing for great air-flow, and there are fans provided. If you get chilly there are extra blankets available. You can sit inside of an air-conditioned space anywhere, but one of the best things about being at Sea Mountain is keeping all the doors and windows open to feel the warm tropical tradewinds! Heaven!
There are two clean laundry areas equipped with newer appliances that make doing your laundry quick and easy. You can install the PayRange app and not have to worry about quarters, and the app will also notify you when the cycle ends, so you can relax at the pool or on the lanai while you wait!. Washing and drying each take about 30 minutes per load. No worries about doing your laundry in the condo and adding all that heat and humidity! You can also do much bigger loads and finish faster than you can with the small stackable washer/dryer units.
The golf course and tennis courts are currently closed but are under new ownership. There are golf courses located nearby in Volcano Village and Discovery Harbor.

- "Chose this location because we wanted to be close to Volcanoes National Park and have beach and pool access. This was the best vacation we’ve ever had. Loved seeing the turtles every day at Punalu’u beach. Kilauea started erupting our first morning so we made several visits to the park, even before sunrise to get the best view of the lava lake. Relatively short drives to Hilo for a helicopter tour of the volcanoes and hiking to Papakolea beach. The pool and hot tub were a great way to end our days, using the grill and chatting with others about their days. The pool is locked at 9:00 pm so there were never any worries about noise. This condo was everything our family of 3 needed and more. Everything was easy to find. Well stocked, conveniently close to the pool with a view of the ocean from the lanai. The unit was clean and extremely comfortable. Comfy bed and pillows. Fans were perfectly positioned and kept us cool every night. Loved this place. Loved our vacation."

- "This condo was a lucky find on our Big Island vacation. There are great views of palm trees and the ocean from the lanai. The pool and hot tub area was very nice with oceanfront views as well. 30 min to Volcano National Park and within walking distance to Black Sands Beach, with turtles. Cooler temps at night and awning windows that open to let in the nice ocean breeze made for great sleeping. Remote location is quiet and relaxing. With no restauarnts nearby, I would suggest providing more baking pans for the oven (pizza, chicken). It would also be nice to have better patio chairs since we spent a lot of time out there, and a broom to sweep up sand, etc. Overall, the place is awesome and we would definitely stay here again! Thanks so much!"

BBQ's are not allowed at the condos, which I was disappointed in - you have to book one of two down at the pool. Black Sand beach is beautiful. You'll definitely need beach shoes though - the black sand is very coarse and hard on the feet." - "Pest control was done the same day we arrived, so they forgot keys inside the condo instead of the lockbox. Luckily management was responsive and able to get us into the condo. Pricing was decent compared to other places. Bed mattress had about 2/10 for comfort. Kitchen had a basic setup. It draws both locals and travelers to its shores for its gorgeous black sand—a result of underwater volcanic activity—and for those hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive and endangered hawksbill and green sea turtles. If you're lucky, you might spot these creatures resting on the warm, black sand. Hawaiian monk seals sometimes make a rare appearance, too.

Screen to the lanai door was ripped a little, porch light was burnt out are my only complaints. "

FOOD: There is Hana Hou Restaurant, featuring delicious local-style food; the famous Punalu'u Bakery; and a variety of local food trucks all in neighboring Na’alehu. Volcano has Kilauea Lodge, with excellent food, as well as several other good restaurants. More dining choices are available in Kailua Kona and Hilo. However, you may also prepare local cuisine yourself by gathering the freshest ingredients from aforementioned Farmers' Markets, small grocery stores in either Pahala or Na'alehu, or larger grocery stores in Hilo, Kailua Kona and neighboring town Ocean View. Our condominium at the Colony One Sea Mountain resort is one of the most serene places on the big island, located close to Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach. The one-bedroom condo has a split level with the lanai, living room, kitchen and laundry nook upstairs. The upper level has a vaulted and beamed ceiling creating a spacious and airy ambiance, and you can hear the surf and view the ocean from the lanai and living room. The kitchen is well-equipped with a refrigerator, oven range, microwave and dishwasher. A pull-out sofa in the living room sleeps two people. Downstairs, there is the entry way, bathroom with a shower, and a king bed in the bedroom, so the unit comfortably sleeps 4 people. A lovely ocean breeze usually blows through the condo, and ceiling fans upstairs and in the bedroom keep the air circulating. The condo is also stocked with some snorkeling gear and boogie boards for your recreational pleasure.

The Colony One complex has an outdoor swimming pool and jacuzzi hot tub with an outdoor shower, along with two gas grills for barbecues, tables and chairs. This pool area has a wonderful ocean view and is lovely for star-gazing on clear nights. The policies of the complex promote relaxation, safety (the complex is kid-friendly), quiet (the pool area is closed by 9 PM) and cleanliness. There are ample parking spaces for cars in the complex and you have the option of catching a ride on the Hele-On buses that stop at Punaluʻu Beach to get to places around the island.

What you will love about our area of paradise on the big island of Hawaiʻi

Our Colony One condo is located in the Kaʻu district on the south side of the big island around 25 miles from South Point, 58 miles from Hilo, 71 miles from Kailua Kona and 30 miles from Volcanoes National Park. The two closest towns are Naʻalehu (8 miles south) and Pahala (6 miles north). Walk to the world-famous Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach (around 10 minutes) and swim/snorkel with the Honu, the Hawaiʻian green sea turtles which are frequently encountered in the bay and or basking on the beach.

There are many major attractions that are shorter drives from the condo: South Point, Papakolea Beach, Volcanoes National Park Kahuku Unit, Kaʻu Coffee Mills, and much more. Papakolea Beach is one of the four natural beaches in the world that encompasses beautiful green sand of olivine crystals. South Point is the most southern point in the United States and is renowned for breathtaking views, cliff jumping thrills and ocean fishing. You can watch whales from several locations around here during their seasonal migrations. The Kahuku section of Volcanoes National Park is 116,000 acres in size with wonderful hiking trails two to three thousand feet above sea level, so it's cooler. In the other direction, Kilauea in the Volcanoes National Park is an amazing attraction because it is one of the most active volcanoes in the world that often spews lava. And there are spectacular views of Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano on Earth, from different locations of the southern part of the big island. The Kaʻu Coffee Mill is famous worldwide for its unique coffee taste. See the farm itself and take a tour of the beautiful uplands of the Ka’u district. The Punaluʻu Bakery Shop located in Naʻalehu features freshly made acclaimed Sweet Bread, which now ships globally and can be sampled and enjoyed in your lunch sandwich while lounging in the well-maintained grounds. There are several farmers markets with a diverse range of local vendors (including lots of yummy ready-to-eat food, fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, and crafts) on different days of the week in Naʻalehu, Ocean View and Volcano.We love the delicious array of island grown fruit, including mangoes, papayas, coconuts, tangerines, grapefruit, avocados, bananas, lychees, rambutans, longans and star fruit. And the variety of fresh caught, sashimi-grade fish is amazing.

- "Enjoyed the stay only thing bed was too hard and pillow was too flat no fluff in it at all. Other than that we enjoyed it granddaughter enjoyed the pool and made new friends. Mahalo!" - "Lovely location near the beach, an easy walk. No snorkeling on Punalu’u, but we saw turtles on the beach every day and kids were boogie boarding and swimming. 40 minute drive to Volcanoes National Park, and we spent 2 days exploring there. Very open and airy island home. High ceiling made it feel very spacious. Feels remote, and the complex was very quiet. Birds and geckos will visit you on the lanai. No A/C, but it cooled down quickly with the breeze at night when the windows were open and sleeping was not a problem. Kitchen is very well equipped. Felt very safe staying there. Met some nice folks."

We named our unit Pog's Place after a sweet littlegeckowho visits our outdoor lanai for a tiny treatof Passion, Orange, Guava juice.

The Space

This is a spacious true one bedroom unit that sleeps up to four people with a Cal King in the bedroom and a full size sofa sleeper in the living area. The unit entrance and bedroom face the mountain views; you will wake to the gentle call ofdoves on this side of the unit. The large bathroom is freshly painted and has original artwork on the walls. It has a tub and shower, equipped with body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. Our brand new on demand water heater gets hot water to you quickly! The guest closet has lots of extra bed linens, pillows and towels. The bedroom and bathroom are both on the entrance level. Then up a short flight of travertine steps is the open floor plan living room, full-size kitchen, and dining area all under a high vaulted ceiling which allows for a bright, airy space with great views from the large second floor lanai. Since this unit is located on the upper level of the building, there are no worries about noise above you. The full size kitchen has a peek through bar with beautiful new hardwood stools where you can relax and unwind with your favorite beverage. It has all you will need for cooking during your visit including some fun new items; a rice cooker and NutriBullet. It also houses your own stacked washer/dryer with supplies of detergent and dryer sheets. The living room has a comfortable seating area with a 48” flat screen TV above the bar, high speed internet, Apple TV, and cable. It also houses the full size, sofa sleeper withbrand new mattress topper and bedding. The dining area has seating for four and is immediatelyadjacent to the kitchen. Just out the sliding doors you’ll find the second floor covered lanai which is very spacious at 6’ x 20’. It is wonderful for sunrise breakfast/coffee, sunset dinners, and star gazing at night; a great place to read a book in the upholstered lounge chair, or relax with a glass of wine and visit the resident geckoes,Pog and Gop. They work hard to keep down the bugs for us all, and are welcome residents.

This unit has new travertine floors and professional custom upholstery throughout. It is a very well-stocked unit with all the comforts of home.A short walk through the beautifully landscaped resort will bring you to the pool, hot tub, small Koi pond, restrooms with outdoor showers, gasbbqgrills, and ice machine. Grab our Tommy Bahama chairs, beach mats/towels, and snorkel gear, and enjoy a full day there. Nov-Feb are prime months to see humpback whales breaching out on the horizon! Take the trail down the beach to the many protected lagoons and see the historical sites, or head up the hill and check out the old Hoku Loa church and cemetery. Nearby and short drives from the resort are Papakolea Beach (one of the only green sand beaches in the world), Kulakai Cavern, South Point Cliffs, and Kilauea Volcano. The green sand beach is close to Oceanview and a 3 mile hike from the parking lot, or you can pay the locals to take you down in a four wheel drive, and bring you back up again. Kulakai Cavern is also close to Oceanview, and offers guided tours of the volcanically formed caverns. Kilauea has been active year round in Volcano National Park. There are also ancient lava lakes you can hike and the Thurston Lava Tube to explore. Check out Miranda’s Farms for coffee tasting and Ka’u Coffee Mill to see the farm itself and take a tour of the beautiful uplands of the Ka’u district. Last but not least, the Punalu’u Bake Shop located in Na’alehu features freshly made, ever popularMalasadas(Portuguese donuts) with local flavours like Lilikoi, that can be sampled and enjoyed while lounging in their gardens. They also have a fun gift shop and other food. In town there are also a few restaurants and coffee houses, as well as the farmers market on Wed and Sat.

Important to Know

You'll want to stop for groceries and drinks along the way as there are few options in the area. Kailua-Kona and Hilo both have KTA Supermarkets, Target and other big stores; Kailua-Kona also has Costco. The local grocery store in Pahala, Mizuno's Superette, is small and relatively expensive with limited hours but has a friendly staff and has been there for generations.

Most guests rent vehicles at Hilo or Kailua-Kona airports as public transportation is very limited here. Parking on-site is free. You can get a parking pass from the resort manager. Instructions will be in your unit.

There is no ac/heat in the unit. Temps are always 65-85 degrees; ceiling fans and cross breezes keep the air moving and it’s quite nice.

Quiet hours are from 9pm to 8am. There is no smoking in the unit or on the lanai. There are designated smoking areas with nice picnic tables.

The space is for up to four people. No parties. No pets allowed in the resort except certified registered service dogs, please let us know in advance.

The golf course is currently closed (pending new ownership) but is kept maintained. There is a golf course nearby in Discovery Harbor.

ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES: PUNALU'U BLACK SAND BEACH is just a short walk or drive away to see the Green Sea Turtles basking on the beach in the warm sun. The 18 hole golf course (currently closed) rolls thru the property with ocean views at almost every hole. Golf carts make the round a breeze. Hiking, mountain biking, diving/snorkeling, kayaking, bird watching, photographing, scenic drives, shopping, sightseeing, museums, restaurants and Volcano National Park are just a short drive away.

- "The unit was exactly as pictured. The grounds and the lanai view were gorgeous and old time Hawaiian, with lava walls everywhere. Very laid back and quiet rural area, easy walk to the beach. The first day there we saw a turtle and a small eel hanging out in the tidepools. Comfortable bed and nice unit, beautiful large shower with stone floor. Well equipped kitchen. We enjoyed the pool. No issues getting into the unit. Great place to get away from it all."
