- "This property was exactly as listed if not better. Whale watching from the porch anytime of day; or lounging in the sun overlooking the ocean. The serenity of being immersed in nature ; from the birds, horses, frogs, geckos. The night sky was absolutely magnificent. And occasionally able to see the silhouette of Maui. Thats all, and then the actual views of the healing energy of Waipio Valley. I enjoyed having a little haven to go to after a day of sight seeing! The house was completely stocked with your every need, from beach chairs to towels and extra toiletries if you forgot them. I cried when I left because it was just so relaxing and peaceful. Highly recommend to anyone who likes the slower pace of life looking to get away. "

LATEST NEWS: VOLCANO ERUPTION
THE VOLCANO: The volcano eruption has little effect on our part of the island. The eruption is on the other end of the Island from our location. The trade winds blow most of the smoke to the southern end of the Island and has no impact on us at all. If the trade winds abate, we might temporarily get a little vog (fog plus smog). Otherwise, know that you are safe with us.

The View House is the epitome of graciousness, peace, quiet, and privacy. It is a tropical oasis on three acres of manicured grounds, fragrant flowers, and tropical fruit trees. The predominant colors are the crystal-clear blue sky, countless shades of tropical green foliage, and the deep blue-green ocean. The oxygen-rich air reaches the estate untainted over 2500 miles of the Pacific. The sunlight actually sparkles in the air at times. All these elements taken together create a Garden of Eden that you will never want to leave.
From the large, sweeping lanai (deck), Maui can be seen in the distance across the Pacific. The View House is a lovingly renovated and updated sugar company's employee's house, retaining the feel of a bygone era. Superbly crafted and furnished with tropical bamboo and teak furniture, it offers an elegant and light-filled space.
All water running into the house comes from deep Island aquifers and is double-filtered and pure. Floors are hardwood and tile. The house features a lovely bathroom with a soaking tub, a large, fully-equipped kitchen with Mexican counter tops, a master bedroom with a queen bed and ocean view, a small bedroom with twin beds and garden view, and a fold-out queen bed in the living room. Both of these rooms are available on the second floor.
PLEASE NOTE THAT TWO ADDITIONAL ROOMS are available for extra charges per night:
-- The Mermaid Room, a lovely, small room on the first floor of the View House has an orchard and ocean view. It has one twin bed. The bathroom facilities and spa are just outside the door to the room. $35 extra per night.
-- The Buddha Room, at the entrance to the property separate but adjacent to the View House, has a full-size (double) bed and 1/2 bath (toilet and sink). The shower facilities are 30 steps away on the spa deck. $50 extra per night.
** These rooms must be booked separately by contacting the owner directly.
With all spaces occupied, including the queen bed fold out in the living room, the possible total occupancy of the facility can be as many as eight people. (two in the master bedroom queen, two in the twin beds in the small bedroom, two on the queen fold out in the living room, one in the Mermaid Room and one in the Buddha room.)
For even deeper relaxation, guests at the View House have exclusive use of our spa. Our infrared sauna, hot tub, and cold tub sit on totally private decks, surrounded by lime and moringa trees. Guests will find an additional shower room and water closet in the adjoining tiled breezeway.
This property is our only rental. We are a small, private operation and offer a serene, safe, exceptionally clean environment in “old Hawaii,” off the beaten track. There is one other house on the 3-acre property where the property managers reside. They will be available should you need anything during your stay. The caretaker lives in a small trailer at the far corner of the property.
We are 4 miles from spectacular Waipio Valley and 4 miles from a historic small “sugar town” with all amenities. We are an hour from Kona and an hour from Hilo, making both sides of the Island accessible. The most common feedback we get is that the home and property are more beautiful than the photos.
If you are coming to the Big Island in search of beauty, peace, serenity, relaxation, and rejuvenation, you have found what you are looking for! Our part of the island still expresses traditional Hawaiian “Aloha,” and the View House is the culmination of your quest.
Please Note: The listed price is for two guests per night. There is an additional charge of $15/night per guest over two. For example, 3 total guests would incur a charge of $15 extra per night, 4 total guests would incur a charge of $30 extra per night, and so on…

Our secluded ohana (guest home) features a grand, unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean. The gentle breezes and typically sunny days of our small local neighborhood make this charming hideaway perfect for guests seeking tranquility, privacy, and convenience in a comfortable climate. Whales can be seen (and sometimes heard) from your lanai during their visit to our waters. Unaffected by any surrounding light, the night time is equally enchanting as the stars fill the full canopy of sky. However, all conveniences are so close you'll lack for nothing. Located only 1 mile from quaint, authentic Honokaa, all the amenities and services you may need are simply 5 minutes away. Famous attractions such as Waipio Valley, with its black sand beach, are a short drive as are waterfalls, beaches, and all recreational opportunities. If relaxing at home is your preference, you can enjoy the swimming pool that we share with our guests.

- "First off, loved the property. The view is amazing and the layout is nice. The breeze that runs through the windows keeps it cool. Rachel is an above and beyond host. She keeps the little things on hand that you would usually not think of when you’re on vacation. Stuff like coffee filters, dish soap, etc. She made us feel the true spirit of aloha and like we were part of her ohana. I would stay with her again anytime." - "Very clean property - amazing views of the ocean (and sometimes cows). Geckos on the porch, lovely winds starting in mid morning, and relatively cool at night. The pool was very appealing, but we only went in it once (too busy doing other stuff). Rachel was very responsive, although we didn't end up needing anything. The unit had everything we needed - while we didn't cook we did eat in a couple of nights. The icemaker in the fridge was great, and there is a water filter container in the fridge as well. There are beach chairs, a cooler, and some other beach equipment. We may be a bit spoiled because we just got a new mattress at home, but the bed did have some peaks and valleys. There are multiple fans (we only used the ceiling fan) and it is extremely quiet! There is certainly lots to see in the area, with easy access to Waimea and north to Hawi. The Waip'o Valley lookout is also close, and there are several cool shops in Honoka'a. Rachel's place was a wonderful way to start our trip to the Big Island and we would certainly stay again."

- "My family of 4 from San Diego (daughters ages 19, 16) thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Vintage Farmhouse. For three nights we cooked both breakfast and dinner and played card games. In the morning we walked the grounds and took morning walks up to the state park before our daily outings to waterfalls and volcano. Dale has thought of every detail. There is some much to see on the grounds with the plants and animals. We loved the outdoor shower and barbecuing on the charcoal grill. Amazing unique experience to get away and unplug. We loved it. Our girls left behind their swimsuits and Dale mailed them home and were here when we arrived home. I highly recommend booking this place. Mahalo for sharing your home!"

- "I arrived a little late due to car rental events. It was so nice of them to call to see if I was ok and still coming. I had been in Kukuihaele a couple of other times. Buzz met me when I arrived. He is very nice and showed me the place next to his shop which he never used while I was there. After a day I fell in love with the simple peaceful place with a wonderful view of nature. The little outdoor covered kitchen had all I needed. Best of all was sitting out there and eating all my meals and just sitting. Birds galore singing all day! And croaky frogs that sound like birds at night. Buzz keeps the grass mowed beautifully around the house and the field of fruit. I walked barefoot through the field to visit a neighbor. It was a special time. People are friendly. Waimea is close by and superb farmers markets! I had a wonderful time and have really fond memories staying in Kukuihaele. There are tangerine, few orange trees, bananas, guava (yum) coconuts, gardenias, gorgeous hibiscus 🌺…. Every morning I had a fruit salad. I walked every day to the Waipio Lookout. It’s a walk through the neighborhood. Everything is so green. You get to see and be a part of rural Hawaii and not crowded tourist places. Honokaa is the little town 9 miles away. It’s an old sugar cane town and really charming and full of nice people who live in the area and sweet shops and cafes. Love it! Hilo is a gorgeous drive and a great older town to visit too. Lots to do there."

The view looking over the ocean was spectacular. I'm a big fan of relaxing, watching the ocean, and listening to nature. We were not able to access the check-in instructions until after we arrived since there is no wifi in the surrounding area. But the in-house wifi -- and Darrin himself -- soon remedied that. As part of the Hasegawa family of Honoka'a, we will no doubt be back and would love to stay here again!" - "A truly beautiful log cabin set in amazing gardens with their own waterfall. - "This is where i will go when i run away from home. It feels rustic with all its comforts and a waterfall. I sat for 3 days on the porch never tiring of the botanical garden right in front of me. The owners are a delight and care about every detail. We never heard anyone's voice the entire stay and could cocoon ourselves in beauty and peace. We read a lot, watched the stars, sipped coffee on our private deck in early morning light and napped on two comfy couches in the cabin in the afternoons. The weather was 75 degrees with trade wind breezes. So many perfect places to sit overlooking the river as i wandered through the gardens. The Frog Pond cabin is my new home away from home. Thank you Darin and Katerina, you are the best!"

- "We arrived later into the night and check-in was seamless and we were able to settle in quickly and starting enjoying the waterfall immediately. The whole property is just stunning, we woke up and ventured around, we took a couple days to just chill in the stream. Went into town and got vegetables, fruit, fish and meat and hunkered down for a few days. It was amazing, there is a great pellet grill that we put to work. Wonderfully fresh veggies and fruit, made a fresh fish curry and poke bowls. I can't suggest this property more. It was perfect for me and my partner. You might have to juggle appliances due to power constraints but we were careful and never ran into any issues. Can't wait to come back :D "

The Log Cabin, a licensed 'inn', is located in lush and peaceful Ahualoa, just an 8 minute drive up the mountain from historic Honokaa town. The Log Cabin is a great setting for families, groups, weddings or other special events.
You can enjoy a stroll around the yard or a walk in the area. Apparently, one of Lance Armstrong's favorite routes goes past the Log Cabin. One can see why, it is just beautiful and naturally diverse.
- "Two families celebrating a couple of high school grads, were delighted by the unique, secluded, log cabin in Hawaii. The log cabin had plenty of room for the 8 of us, with plenty of room for privacy. We were able to prep meals for all, when dining in, with the plentiful appointments, supplies and resources. Driving around the mountainous area, into Honoka’a, or to Waimea, or wherever our daily plans took us, was always an adventure. Doug, the on-site caretaker, was exceptional! I cannot thank him enough, for being available, helpful, and accommodating, while allowing us privacy to experience this Hawaiian gem. Thank you for sharing your “Log Cabin,” and THANK YOU DOUG!"

- "Beautifully maintained lush gardens and a lovely waterfall on the property. Very clean, comfortable accommodations with all the necessities!" - "This property is very well loved and it shows in the work that has been put into it. I know from experience the hard work it takes to create and maintain grounds in a rainforest-like setting. A whimsical delight!" - "We were very impressed with the grounds, which is literally a lovely jungle botanical garden. Just within steps of the house is a small stream and waterfall, surrounded by beautiful tropical plants. The unit itself was exceptionally clean, comfortable, and well maintained, with all the amenities you can think of. Locally, the dining options are fairly limited, because the nearby town, (Honokaha), is very small. But, there's a large grocery store, if you want to pick up some items as you pass through town. There is an adequate assortment of shops in Honokaha to keep you busy for a day of browsing, but if you start craving a bigger city, Waimea is 20 miles away. This was a very enjoyable mini-vacation for my wife and I, which we may repeat. "

Picture Shangri La with rolling mists and sunshine over the canopy of Ohia Lehua with the tip of Mauna Kea poking through the valleys off in the near distance...
Ahu Lani Retreat Center is an educational and retreat facility located at 3,000 feet elevation on the Hamakua Coast. We host Universities, Yoga Teacher Trainings, Father Daughter Retreats, and a variety of unique groups looking to escape the sounds and vibrations of the modern world and retreat to the mystical forests of fairies and dragons.
We are the last property on the road only 3.5 miles from the belt road. We are on the slopes of Mauna Kea (10 miles mauka) and situated in an old growth Ohia and newly planted Koa forest. The journey to our sanctuary is a pilgrimage to an ancient part of the Hawaiian landscape that many people haven't had a chance to experience until now.
We have not been active on VRBO and so our listing has recently been updated.
16 people are included in this booking rate, but we host up to 20 people. We specialize in connecting visitors and guests to the Hawaiian community of healers. We can arrange yoga, ayurvedic, lomi lomi, gong, etc.
Our ranch is a miniature petting zoo and we have baby goats and gigantic horses for you to meet. Farm fresh eggs are included for our guests as long as they last.
The Ahu Lani Sanctuary which surrounds the retreat center is a 24 acre native forest. We have over 130 different species of native trees, ferns, flowers, and herbs. We have hiking trails on the land, or explore barefoot in the forest on your own trails. The land is fully fenced so no worry about wild boars or random bulls.
A wrap-around Lani makes for great gathering spaces to enjoy meals, relax and read, nap, and hang out with the friends/family. A large commercial style chef's kitchen with chopping block island is perfect for creating home cooked meals, or let us cater for you.
This property has a very unique 30 foot cedar round room. Enjoy morning yoga, meditation, dancing, and group gatherings in this warm and special room.
We are 100% off grid -solar and water catchment.
Close to Waimea (25 minutes to town) and Waipio Valley (20 minutes) yet far enough from the highway to feel like you are in your own Hawaiian sanctuary. Mauna Kea is visible on a clear day. 50 minutes to Hilo, 1.5 hour to Kona, and 45 minutes to the most amazing beaches on Hawaii. Plenty of parking for multiple vehicles, we do recommend 4X4 because it is a dirt road to access the ranch.
Let us share with you a part of Hawaii you have never seen before!
- "This place was better than we had hoped! The host were very helpful, set up yoga for us and helped with anything we needed. Great place to stay!" - "The pictures on VRBO do NOT do this property justice. It is amazingly beautiful and peaceful. The family room and kitchen were so spacious that everyone hung out for hours every evening for meals and to play games. We spent a lot of time together on the massive wrap-around porches. The kids loved petting the goats and horses and checking for eggs in the chicken coop. And the whole family laid in the courtyard at night watching the stars. We went to Kona and Hilo to do a few touristy things. But I would have been happy just staying at the house. The yoga studio is awesome. Tanner, the caretaker, lives nearby and took us on a tour of the land. He’s a conservationist and is working to reintroduce trees and protect the Hawaiian ecosystem. He’s very knowledgeable- we learned quite a bit from him. Also, we were celebrating the life of my younger brother who passed recently and he brought 3 trees for us to plant in his memory. It was very thoughtful and meant a lot to all of us. I would recommend buying groceries before you head there (there’s a great Costco in Kona). But other than food, everything you need is there (including a kitchen with all the utensils you need and even beach chairs and boogie boards for the beach). I would also recommend doing the initial drive up the mountain during the day. The road is safe but quite an adventure the first night. LOL. This is the perfect spot for a restful retreat and was my favorite vacation ever. I couldn’t recommend it more. Thank you!!"

- "Unforgettable…. Rustic yet cozy cottage. Well appointed with a nice yard and spectacular view of the ocean. The host was very helpful and responsive. I really felt the Aloha Spirit there." - "This is a very special home about a 1.5 miles from the Waipio Valley Lookout. It's most suited for a couple with small kids or a single traveler. The front lanai view is gorgeous and their is also a lovely back patio with a small orchard. You are fully immersed in nature and the wonderful geckos combat the insects. It takes a few days to get used to their clicking through the night as they are loud and locquacious. Walking to Waipio daily was fantastic.I was extremely pleased with the fully stocked kitchen including a wok and rice maker. For a long term stay it has pretty much everything you would want and there is also a gas grill in back. The only thing I might add would be a few more sheet pans and a crock pot. And perhaps an immersion blender. The location is outstanding if you prefer to be in a non-touristy area. You're gonna do some driving for sure, but you're closer to Hilo, the Volcanoes, and only 10 mins from Honokaa which has several good restaurants and a grocery store. It's also only 25 mins ftom Waimea which has more food options. The management (Grace/Bonnie) and owner (Julie) couldn't be more accomadating, but truthfully I had zero issues during my month long stay. If you a lucky enough to visit the Big Island for a Iong-term stay I would highly recommended this property over anything in Kona, Waikoloa, Kawaihae, Waimea, Captain Cook, Hilo, etc. It’s also incredibly reasonable. I hope to come back in the near future.Bill T"

- "We have stayed here before and once again it was perfect. This is true old time Hawaii at its best. We ate all the fresh fruit that was waiting for us. For me, sitting on front porch, feeling the trade wind and hearing the sound of the sugar cane leaves dancing in the wind is as close to heaven on earth as you can get. Especially if you are eating a Malasada from Tex and drinking a cup of coffee. Fairy and Nico are the sweetest cats ever. We love them so much! We have been successful in getting all of our guests out of the valley in time for their flights with no delays. However, we recommend guests arrange additional accommodations on the Island for a day at the end of their stay to ensure a smooth transition to the airport and alleviate the stress of catching flights on a timely basis.
WAIPIO ACCESS UPDATE:
Due to the recent Hawaii County Proclamation Rules regarding access into Waipio Valley, all tourists, including our guests to Waipio Gardens unless they are residents of Hawaii and hold a valid Hawaii driver's license are required to be shuttled into Waipio Valley until the County improves the Waipio Valley access road.
*Included in the listing rate is one free round-trip shuttle into and out of the Valley on your check-in and check-out days. Rental vehicles can be parked at our personal home, located about 5 minutes from the Waipio Lookout where we have a designated guest parking area.
We understand that many of our guests may want to make day trips out of the Valley to explore other parts of the Island. We ask that you please schedule these day trips ahead of time with Kristi and Sukumar so that they can plan accordingly to accommodate your shuttles. These additional shuttles are priced at $200 per in-and-out trip.
Please feel free to message us with any questions you have. :)
Mahalo for your understanding!
We look forward to having you as our guests!

- "Staying in the Waipio Valley is a magical experience and Kristi and Sukumar's cottage is the perfect place to do it. We used the small kitchenette to cook meals each night, hiked, did trail runs, walked to the black sand beach and viewed the epic waterfalls. It was incredible and we can't wait to come back." - "Unwind, unplug and relax in old hawaii in the most beautiful setting."
