The cottages, each an individual standalone unit, had a wonderful rustic decor, with plenty of windows to enjoy the scenery. The establishment is not kidding about the lack of connectivity though: I couldn't connect to the complimentary wifi, and I had only emergency calls and no data through my Verizon provider. But if you want to go off the grid, this is the place! It was very quiet and peaceful at night, except for the coqui frogs. Some find their incessant chirp annoying, but I enjoyed it as part of the atmosphere. I wish I could have stayed longer, and I'll definitely be back if I have the opportunity."

There is also an additional bathroom outside that I didn’t read about or see until my last night. The outdoor hot tub and shower were all placed uniquely in the back of the property amongst nature. The location is super remote and takes some patience trying to find, but you stay here for that reason — off the beaten path. The grounds indoors and out were well maintained. The artwork at the entrance and books inside are provocative and edgy which matches the vibe of the place. The kitchen, dining area, living room and patio were spacious enough for those who want to be alone. Locks are provided on every room door for security. There is a house cat that lurked around. Once you're good and rested, you'll want to explore all of the wonderful local amenities. Start with Pahoa town, only 5 minute from the cottage with 11 multi-national restaurants to choose from and an extremely well stocked natural foods store. There is a New Black Sand Beach at Pohoiki Park, created from the new lava flow.
All along the coast in the rural Puna district, you will discover special places to explore from parks to sheltered coves. 15 minute from the cottage is the exotic Kehana Beach where palm and ironwood trees frame a lovely crescent of black sand. Two miles in the other direction is Mackenzie State Park, with steep lava cliffs and rugged, rocky shore. Mackenzie Park also has hiking trails and accessible lava tubes for spelunking. Take another day to discover old Hawaii. Visit Kalapana Village, only 15 minutes from the cottage, plant a coconut on Hawaii's newest Black Sand Beach created by lava flows in the 90's. Don't miss FREE live local hawaiian music outdoors here every Wednesday night and enjoy the local treats at the farmers market and the food stands, featuring a variety of items including vegan and vegetarian fare. On the way there you'll pass the historical star of the sea painted church. Down the coast you may be able to see a plume of steam rising where lava is flowing in to the ocean!

Don't forget the charming town of Hilo in your itinerary. Only 25 minutes from home, discover Hilo's unique history on Bay Front at the Pacific
Tsunami Museum. Down the street you will be among friendly people as you wander throughout

Also really enjoyed volcano national park and our favorite snorkeling was at Punalu’u beach with the sea turtles."

The Original Rainbow Dreams Cottage - with a spectacular oceanfront view - is the only vacation rental so close to the ocean on the scenic Old Red Road (Rural Route 137) in the small village of Opihikao. The cottage is off-grid, see below.

Situated on the beautiful Puna Coast of the Big Island amidst a majestic 'king's-grove' of coconut palms, the cottage faces directly on the Pacific Ocean with stunning, 180-degree views framed thru palms and native, mahogany trees. Set within a tropical garden planted with over 100 coconut palms, exotic fruits and the fragrance of tropical flowers, this cottage is simply the best rental in the area.

Inside this private home is a new kitchen and bathroom with tropical decor and vintage koa wood, mahogany and bamboo furnishings. With a direct view of the ocean, you may spend your whole vacation simply gazing at the waves, yet the cottage is the perfect base for exploring the unique nature and culture of the Big Island. Volcanoes National Park, is a major attraction, and the improved Saddle Road in between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea Mountains is both scenic and convenient, connecting between our cottage and the Kona side of the island in a 2.5-hour drive.

I was a little worried about "off the grid" limitations, but we never had trouble with the solar power, even at night, and except for cautions about drinking the cistern water, there was plenty of running water. The cottage was very clean and nicely furnished, both beds really comfortable. We were impressed how the kitchen had everything we needed to cook dinner each night. Note that cell service is non-existent not just at the cottage (which was fine!) but also spotty throughout the whole local area, so just prepare to be a bit more cut-off than normal, but isn't that the point of a relaxing vacation? Highly recommended--we hope to visit the island of Hawaii again, and this will be our first choice of accommodations!"

There is a black sand beach nearby to explore (Kehena), and a lava tube hidden in a kipuka surrounded by a lava field, and geothermally heated ponds, forest trails, farmers’ markets, yoga classes, chocolate and mushroom farms, dances, waterfalls, drum circles and maybe wild dolphins… we hope you thoroughly enjoy the nature of the big island!

Garden of the Phoenix is a 2 bed/1 bath, upstairs unit with a lanai facing State Land, 100s of acres of native Ohia Forest, the first tree to sprout and grow on fresh lava. It is about 1.5 miles distance to the clothing optional black sand beach known as Kehena where wild dolphins sometimes swim with beach goers and Sundays are drum circles. The neighborhood has a Dark Sky policy to promote star gazing. Uncle Robert’s offers a variety of Farmer’s Markets and evening music with a bar and smoothie shack.

Just built and completed in 2020, the upstairs is completely yours, 2 bedrooms and 1 beautiful bathroom, tastefully furnished, with a lanai facing the backyard gardens and forest. Insulated walls for sound and temperature control with large ceiling fans and vaulted ceilings in every room. Large windows catch the trade winds.

Shared laundry machines on the ground level lanai with the on-site property manager who lives in the ground floor unit, with a dog, Bubba. Super friendly born 12/2020. Pet friendly house. Respect your neighbors! Only do laundry between the hours of 8am and 8pm.

The Puna rain forest retreat has five cottages located at the end of a lovely gravel road off of a well marked and easy to navigate secondary road. We stayed in the rainbow cottage. The rainbow cottage is the center cottage which is flanked on both sides by the two other cottages. Our rainbow cottage was literally painted with rainbow colors on the outside and soft subtle hues on the inside. We could actually lay in bed and see the ocean from the bed. There was a deck outside of our bedroom and we often spent the early part of the morning sipping coffee and sitting outside on the deck. Welcome to our beautifully designed Lava House. Situated on 2 private acres of pristine beauty and tranquility. A long winding driveway leads you to our very private home which backs up to the most spectacular lava field. Our home is surrounded by gorgeous, lush native Hawaiian rain forest, flowers, fruit trees, birds and imminent view of a recent phenomenon - Fissure 8.This was the most destructive fissure from the 2018 Lava flow and contains geothermal heated pockets on the island.

The space
The Green Bamboo Studio overlooks the 20 acre estate surrounded by rainforest within the Puna Forest Reserve, 4 miles from Pahoa. Enjoy active steam vents with pure water steam, warm ground and 2 hot springs. With no visible neighbors the property is secluded and peaceful with citrus, bananas, fruit orchard, avocados, palms, and many flowers.

The Green Bamboo Studio has a queen size bed, full kitchen and full bathroom. There is a couch/bed comfortable for a third guest under 5 foot 6 inches tall. Wi-fi is not password protected Cell service works for most providers and there is a beautiful 1.2 mile nature trail on the property.

Our nighttime temperatures are perfect for restful sleep, unlike sea level where it stays hot at night. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hi or have questions. This is a great place to base your Big Island adventures.

Blue Ginger and Green Bamboo each have a full kitchen with all the amenities, a full bathroom and a cozy queen size bed and a Futon. Both studios have lanais overlooking the meadow and ocean.

Purple Passionflower has a kitchenette with all the amenities, a full bathroom, a king size bed in the master bedroom and two twins in the second bedroom.
Rainbow Cottage is the same but has a queen in master bedroom. Both cottages have lanais overlooking the meadow and ocean.
Guest access
There is a gate to access our property and you will receive the gate code when you make your reservation. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hello or have questions. The property is very private and quiet. Your host is available onsite.

Guests can use the pool, hot springs, BBQ and 1.2 mile rainforest trail around the 20 acre property. Guests are also invited to eat fruit from the orchard including lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, passion fruit, banana, soursop, guava and avocado.
Other things to note
The 20 acre retreat is within the Puna Forest Reserve and our grounds are surrounded by rainforest that is part of the retreat. Steam vents developed on the property from recent eruption and produce clean steam from boiling groundwater. Volcanic heated hot spring is available for guests and it is relaxing to lay on the hot ground. Hawaiian Natives own the non-private property within the reserve to protect the Native Ohia forest that is sacred to them. The reserve is endangered species habitat for the Endangered Hawaiian Owl, Hawk, and Bat. While these species are otherwise very rare they are often seen at the retreat. Researchers continue to identify new species and there is ongoing collaboration to control invasives.

The Ohia Forest has giant ferns, diverse species of orchids, epiphytic plants, strawberry guava, geckos, praying mantis and songbirds. The rainforest is very dense and so we ask guests to remain on the grounds or trail for their safety unless we discuss the specific hazards. The retreat property surrounding the grounds feature many skylights into lava tubes as well as lava trees and caves. The Puna Rainforest is invigorating to see, taste, hear and feel.

The Hakuma House is situated on the Kalapana lava beds near the base of the Kilauea Volcano. The neighborhood itself is eclectic and a mix of rustic, off-the-grid creative homes and people who value elemental living close to nature. Besides being the sunniest, driest part of the island, you are surrounded by sweeping views of the volcano, the ocean, and black lava fields as far as the eye can see. Getting Around: Due to the remote and private nature of the neighborhood, it`s not ideal for walking around, and residents value their privacy. We recommend having a car to fully experience all that Kalapana and the surrounding areas have to offer.

We are situated on a lush rain forest acre of land a couple of blocks from the ocean. Our acre has mature fruit trees including oranges, avocados, coconuts, bananas, and exotics like sapote, jaboticaba and surinam cherry. We share fruit with all our guests, whatever is in season. Delightful flowering plants like night blooming jasmine and mock orange send their heavenly scents into the air.

You can walk through the neighborhood and down a trail to nearby clothing-optional black sand beach, about a 5 minute walk. We also offer shared access to our outdoor solar shower, and our peaceful gardens. Kehena is a quiet neighborhood with lots of character and tropical lushness.

Within a few miles there is a farmer's market on Saturday mornings. Local dining also includes plenty of restaurants in Pahoa town.

Dolphins often frequent our beach. Humpback whales come through in the winter months.

Our Hale Hookipa (Guest House) is a private and comfortable studio with a private bathroom, private entrance, and private lanai. Design to be minimalist, simple, and peaceful to help you focus on what is important. It is a perfect place to rest your head after a full day of exploring the Big Island.

Our guest house has a hybrid spring and memory foam queen mattress, a futon and blackout curtains. Two adults and two kids would be perfect. A fridge with a freezer and coffee maker is available. Your private lanai is equipped with an outdoor grill with a side burner, basic cooking utensils, and a picnic table.

Are you a coffee lover? Experience living inside our coffee farm. You will be surrounded by different coffee varieties. It is our vision to produce quality coffee like Kona and Kau. Harvest coffee with us if it’s in season. We also have a variety of vegetables, herbs, and tea around and you are welcome to enjoy. We have the endemic Mamaki Tea which can be found only here in Hawaii, look for the red vein leaves on the left side of the fence. To use mamaki tea, boil the leaves to extract the red antioxidant then leave overnight. Enjoy hot or cold the next day, it has a vanilla aftertaste.

Our house is eco-friendly, we clean using non-toxic chemicals. The included shampoo, body wash, and dish soap are all plant-based with no harsh chemicals. Enjoy our clean and environmentally friendly place.

Don’t forget to relax in your private lanai and enjoy the starry nights and milky way, you will never see from the mainland.

Here on the Island, you will hear both wild and domestic animals. If the sounds bother you, you can close your doors and windows. We also keep light to a minimum so we can enjoy the beauty of the sky!
