- "The property was livable but old. Major problem with our stay was the bombardment of texts and emails stating the Draconian check out time penalties over and over and over again. Not worth enduring the bombardment. Stay somewhere else!" - "So, let me start with the pros: -Very close to the Manitou Springs main street...easy walking distance to the arcade, shopping, and restaurants. -Property was very clean and decor was very cute. -Loved the large shelf in the bathroom...big enough to hold all my toiletry bags. -We didn't use the kitchen much, but it was very helpful to have a freezer to make ice, and fridge to keep drinks cool. Cons: -Property is kind of on the small size. Thankfully, we only had three people and didn't require much space, but it was small. Hard to store luggage. -Beds both felt kind of fragile. -It is a first floor property, so there wasn't much natural light. -It was kind of hard to get to (driving-wise). The biggest negative for me was the property management. We booked prior to COVID-19, so we had to consider the possibility of cancelling or rescheduling our trip (which involved several different property stays) and this was the only location that gave us a hard time about possibly having to cancel. Considering the worldwide pandemic, I felt that they should have been a little bit more considerate and flexible with us. We still went on our trip and had a fantastic time...communication with the property management notwithstanding. I would recommend the property with the caveat that I hope you never have to contact the stubborn management team."

The place was very clean ,and the manager qas very easy to contact and communicate with we look forward to staying there again " - "The hot tub produced over 7 inch layer of foam. I looked up why a hot tub would do that and it means poor water conditions. So we didn't get to use it. But still charged for it. Don't go for the hot tub. The place is nice. Bed spread had stains. We loved the pool area, and we could tell that she was putting effort into testing the water and making sure towels were out. She answered all of our questions really quickly, she was there when we checked in and the next day also. They had more breakfast options than I expected, and their coffee is great! - "Great place" - "Great little place, in a nice location, and just a few minutes drive from downtown Manitou Springs, and relatively inexpensive. Nice room. Happy all round. " - "This place is literally a hidden gem, BOOK IT! Back balcony with beautiful view. Walked our kids out back to play in the creek and to the playground that is also right behind the lodge. Walk to dispensary across the street, no smoking inside but outside is 420 friendly. Next door to a diner & cafe and a very short walk to convenient stores as well. Really cool squirrels that will sit with you and you can share snacks with. Very beautiful lodge, very clean, a little dated but has everything you need and you will feel safe and have a blast with nature. If you have children the rules are strict as far as you can’t have a single bed even if it’s a king. We did have to upgrade to a double bed room but I’m so grateful for the stay and experience. Coffee & granola bars are available in the mornings. Neighbors were polite & housekeeping lady was very polite as well. Great area, friendly people. We will be back! "

- "Excellent." - "Nice" - "Our request on reservation we’re very well honored. We had a beautiful view of pikes Peak from our third floor room. Our grandsons thoroughly enjoyed the pool, and hot tub. Very well-maintained hotel Jamie, one of the front desk gals was extremely friendly and helpful. I just wish you all could provide a higher for the check-in people. Or chairs to sit in, as you are, asking a lot of them to stand for their whole shift. it would be very hard on their back long-term to be stooped over as much as they have to be. I would not be able to work here. The breakfast was wonderful and Margaret took very good care of all of us in the breakfast room. You should do all you can to maintain your good workers. Thanks for the wonderful stay."

- "The new management has lifted this hotel, in the best location in Manitou Springs, to another level. It is just perfectly simple and clean, with Uber friendly staff. Plenty of parking and the view is magnificent. Right on the bus lines and close to EVERYTHING!" - "The man who checked me in his name was Nick. He was very polite and so accommodating. I was traveling with my Grandmother and he made sure to get us a room she could easily get to. The hotel had changed hands so not everything has been added yet such as a hair dryer and such but Nick tried his best to find me one. The Roku TV is a nice touch but a bit hard for older people to use. Something to keep in mind. I really enjoyed my stay. It's got some details to iron out but I am certain they will be top notch. Keep up the good work!!"

The Waltons Mountain cottage with hot tub is a hillside hideaway located in the foothills of the mighty Pikes Peak mountain. Sitting on almost 100 acres of private land, the cottage provides seclusion and privacy with easy access to Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs.
Fully furnished 2 bedroom, 1 bath cottage. Full kitchen, outdoor hot tub, incredible mountain views, Wi-Fi, and TV!
Great for small families, romantic get aways, or just a relaxing weekend trip.
The Cottage is the front door neighbor to our Waltons Mountain Lodge. Consider booking both properties for your family vacation if you have a larger group. If your party rents both the Cottage and the Lodge, do not remove anything from the Cottage and take it to the Lodge. These are two separate properties, help us keep each well stocked for the next guests.
The Cottage has two queen bedrooms and sleeps 4 (max 5 with a twin blow up mattress and additional fee of $10 per night). Complete kitchen with stove, refrigerator, oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker and Keurig, dishes, pans and silverware. The living area is open plan. Laundry machine and dryer available in the cottage.
There is NO central air. There are ceiling fans in both bedrooms and one portable AC unit in the house. Baseboard heaters in each room. Do not rest anything on or near the baseboard heaters. Pac'n'play provided upon request. Limited availability, not guaranteed. NO SHEET PROVIDED.
The cottage is about a 30 minute walk to the famous downtown Manitou Springs, where shopping and dining are a must. The walk back is about a 30 minute hike back up the mountain, so plan accordingly. If you will be shopping and aren’t up for a good hike both ways, you may want to drive to town.
Plenty of acreage to explore from the thousands of hiking trails to the old Midland railroad train tunnels. Manitou Springs is minutes away for world-famous sights such as the cog railway, the Manitou Incline, Cave of The Winds, and shopping, restaurants, and arcade that make downtown Manitou Springs famous.
You have access to the entire cottage, the side patio with your private hot tub, the front patio with 4 chairs, a table and a gas grill. You can park directly in front of the cottage in your labeled spot or on the concrete slab, directly in front of the Cottage. The dumpster for Lodge and Cottage guests is located across the dirt road. DO NOT FORGET TO REPLACE THE BAR LOCK AND PIN/SCREW or the bear will come and trash will be everywhere.
In addition to the Lodge and Cottage, there are three other homes on the mountain. The green house, located slightly northwest of the Lodge and Cottage (up the road) should remain unbothered during the entirety of your stay. That is private property and any hiking should be done away from the green house. Do not trespass or enter their property at any time. They have two dogs who are always unleashed on their property. They should not bother you, but please let me know if you have any issues. Please be respectful of the other guests that may be staying at the Lodge behind you. The Lodge sleeps up to 22 so it could be a large party. Let me know if you have any issues.
*Our pet fee is a one-time $30 fee per pet. Although service animals are free, I still need to know if you have an animal at the house with you. Please see VRBO’s rules regarding service animals. An emotional support animal is not considered a service animal and the $30 pet fee is required.*
Be advised that Waltons Mountain is adjacent to rugged national forest. Wild animals frequent the area, including bears, mountain lions, and bobcats. PLEASE BE BEAR AWARE and know what to do if you come across a bear (or mountain lion!) while hiking on our property. Stay in groups and do not let children run around without adult supervision and if applicable, keep pets on a leash at all times for their safety. Please ALWAYS lock up the dumpster with both the bar lock and the pin/screw as this helps us keep the bears out of the dumpster. Do NOT leave food or trash outside and do NOT overfill the dumpster. Please contact Caitlin with any issues.
You may see zip liners behind the Lodge, other cars belonging to the three other houses on the mountain and some trucks that use the city water road that is on our land.
Please drive slowly and carefully through the narrow streets in the neighborhood up the mountain road.
There are times when the hot tub has an issue after someone's stay, we do our best to remedy the issue as quickly as possible but there are times we have to wait for a part to arrive and install it. Unfortunately, these problems arrive randomly and are out of our control. Refunds will not be issued if these very rare issues happen before or during your stay and affect your use of the hot tub.
If you let us know of any issues the moment they happen rather than wait until you check out or not inform us at all, we can get a head start to resolve the issue and we really appreciate that.
Check out our video tour in the video section of our listing.
- "The cottage was so cute! We enjoyed the hot tub after strenuous hiking. Very peaceful and quiet." - "This was a quiet, little cottage away from the business and traffic of the downtown shopping area. My only concern was the house past us a little further down had a not so friendly brown/black dog that would come running up to you and growl. With having a 16 month old who was loving having a big open place to play and run, (I have two dogs at home and she loves “puppy”), I was a little nervous this dog would come do something. Other than that, beautiful little get away with my dad and daughter! John, thank you for being so kind and informative prior to our arrival!"

Historical
These vacation rental apartments are in Jerome Wheeler’s carriage house built in 1888.
A second cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jerome Byron Wheeler served during the Civil War, surviving to marry Harriet Macy Valentine (whose family founded Macy’s department store) in 1870. By 1879 he had become the president and a major shareholder of R. H. Macy and Company after the deaths of both its male heirs.
In 1882, Wheeler and his wife visited Colorado, seeking relief for Harriet’s severe bronchitis. They visited Manitou Springs, as it was famous for its mineral waters. In 1883, they built a summer home here, naming it ‘Windemere.’ This sat where the Post Office is currently located.
Soon, Wheeler began hearing reports of silver strikes in Aspen, and he purchased interests in promising mines. Although his time at New York City's most prosperous department store produced years of record sales and profits, Jerome Wheeler’s ambitions were shifting toward Colorado. Wheeler left his position and sold his shares in Macy’s in 1888.
Wheeler became involved in numerous mining ventures in Leadville and Aspen. He organized the Aspen Smelting Company, and built a mountain tramway to bring ore down the mountain to the smelter. He was president of the Croseus Gold Mining and Milling Company, as well as the Rock Hill Consolidated Gold and Silver Mining Company in Leadville. He was a partner in a marble quarry, and was president of the Grand River Coal and Coke Company. Before long, he was phenomenally wealthy.
He built two of downtown Aspen's landmarks; the Wheeler Opera House and the Hotel Jerome, putting nearly one million dollars in each. These are both thriving today. He built the first bank in Aspen, as well as a large residence, but never lived in the home. Known as the Wheeler-Stallard House, it currently serves as home to the Aspen Historical Society.
All told, he invested nearly $6 million into developing Aspen, and is remembered fondly as an icon there as a result.
Jerome Wheeler became a director of the Colorado Midland Railroad when it was organized in 1885, and brought rail connections to both Aspen and Manitou Springs. He and Colorado Springs railroad tycoon James John Hagerman invested over $100,000 in the extension of the Colorado Midland Railroad to the western slope, the first standard gauge railroad to cross the Continental Divide. Some of the rail beds and tunnels for this railroad can still be seen in various places around town and along US-24 west of Manitou Springs.
He started the Manitou Mineral Water Company, which was very popular back east and was even served at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.
He invested in the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway, a cog railway that still transports passengers to the top of Pikes Peak.
As he had in Aspen, Wheeler also built the first bank in Manitou Springs, the Wheeler Bank. This yellow brick building sits at the east end of downtown.
Downtown sits a triangle of land with the clock donated by Wheeler to the town. His wife had been intrigued by a similar clock in Italy, so he spent $3600 to provide one for Manitou Springs.
In 1892, Wheeler became embroiled in the first of a series of lengthy and costly lawsuits over one of his silver mines. The combination of the judgments and the Panic of 1893, resulting in the crash of the value of silver, cost Jerome Wheeler nearly his entire fortune.
Wheeler's mining company laid off all its employees. His banks failed and closed for two years, but Wheeler paid his depositors every dollar and they lost nothing.
Manitou Springs continued to benefit from Wheeler’s largess, even after his fortunes had dwindled. He contributed $50,000 toward the construction of Manitou Avenue and outfitted a volunteer fire company. In 1913, after a devastating flood, he gave $10,000 to the city for emergency repairs.
Jerome Wheeler spent most of his remaining years at Windemere until his death on December 1, 1918.
New York. Aspen. Manitou Springs.
Jerome Wheeler was successful wherever he went, and he and Harriet certainly could have lived wherever they desired. But ultimately, they chose Manitou Springs as their home. Come to Manitou Springs and see what they discovered. This is a great place to be.
History of Windemere
Jerome Wheeler’s Windemere estate in Manitou Springs included an elaborate conservatory, this carriage house, billiard rooms and two bowling alleys. Roses for the Cliff House Hotel were grown in the conservatory and placed on guest's pillows each night.
After the death of the Wheelers (Harriet died in 1916), the estate was sold off, and the Wheeler residence was demolished for a hotel. The post office was built on the site in 1940.
The carriage house was divided into seven apartments about 100 years ago. The building fell vacant in the 1980's. We purchased the building in 1993 with the intention of developing it into a bed and breakfast. Ultimately, due to the constraints of time, money, full-time jobs, and kids to raise, the bed and breakfast was never realized. As they say, "Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans."

Come see why this property has now reached its highest and best use, over 135 years in the making. We think Jerome Wheeler would be pleased with what has become of his carriage house.
- "Great" - "Everything about the house and visit was perfect. House was very clean and well maintained. The owner, Kris was super helpful and responsive. We didn't have a single issue. Parking is tight for a big SUV but after an attempt or two it is certainly maneuverable. If I visit again - this home will be my first choice. Thanks for the extra lovely stay. It was just too short. Too many amazing things to do in Manitou for just two days."

- "Great location - mountain views, town scenes, balcony to watch it all from. Walk to everything in town. The apartment is spacious and had everything we needed. It's quirky for sure but this is an historic building. Don't be put off by the steep, narrow climb to the parking space. You will be glad you have your own space in a town where there is no free parking and spots are at a premium. One minor niggle - nightstand and bedside lamp only for one side of the bed - but not a big deal. Good communications with the owner. Great place for a short stay."

- "Everything was just perfect. The only thing I will do next time is stay in the full kitchen unit. The hosts are sweethearts and offered guidance for anything I needed but I really didn’t need anything because it was perfectly set up. There just aren’t enough thing I could say other than if you see this available, don’t pass it by. Book it and you will be thankful you did. " - "Everything was just about perfect. We will rent there again when we come back to the area! The only minor issue was that we got to Manitou very late, around midnight, and had not eaten all day. However, the host greets you when you get there and lets you in. To avoid getting there even later, we drove to Manitou from Denver as soon as we got our rental car. By the time we got there and checked in no restaurant was open. Self-checkin would make it much more convenient. So if you are getting there, and need to eat, plan accordingly!"

- "Charming property with easy access. We had a lovely stay." - "Beautiful, clean, comfy home!" - "Overall 5 stars and the communication with management was excellent. I do want to mention that there is a basement rental unit below this house. I did not see that listed anywhere in the description prior to booking this for the week. My wife and I found out by hearing a loud screaming argument from below our feet. Other than that, we really enjoyed our stay, the place was clean and couldn’t ask for better proximity to everything and management responded quickly to our questions. When we plan our next trip to Manitou Springs we will book the house and the basement unit at the same time to avoid that mishap."

In addition to the restaurant that is downstairs from the property, there are many places to eat and shops to see within a few blocks of this unit. Could not hear anyone in the other units unless they were walking down the outside stairs which was rare. I would definitely stay again if we were in the area." - "The apartment was super clean and very nice, and the location was absolutely unbeatable. Right in the heart of beautiful Manitou Springs, walking distance to everything, we even walked to the Cog Railway! "

Manitou Springs is known for its location at the base of Pikes Peak, and that means some steep hillsides within a box canyon. Surrounded by an original historic greenstone wall across the front, this home offers great appeal and off-street parking too! There is a private driveway on the side of the home for your convenience. To enter the house at the side entrance, walk past the charming, classic front porch that just invites some time to spend watching the world below with a cup of coffee or a local Colorado craft beer or cocktail.
Entering the home, you’ll be presented with a bright, warm and welcoming space that embraces it’s classic roots while also inviting modern practicalities too. The design is simple, with all of the rooms radiating outward from the living room. This central space is perfect for some serious relaxation or even an afternoon nap after the day’s adventures. There’s a dining table here with seating for four and just off the living room is the stylish, functional kitchen featuring quality cabinetry and a new stainless-steel refrigerator, gas stove and dishwasher along with a classic tin ceiling. As you finish your own culinary creations, you’ll be able to gaze out the window above the sink to the mountains across Ute Pass, and just beyond to the tips of the red rocks of Garden of the Gods.
The home’s single bedroom is just off the living room beyond French doors and offers king-size comfort to the weary traveler, well-appointed with hotel quality linens, cleaned and laundered professionally. The single bathroom is clean and inviting. There’s a full laundry for guest use, as well as desk space or a work area, to get some last minute projects completed (if you must)! Just outside the glass door from the kitchen is an exceptional outdoor living space, perfect for a meal in the fresh mountain air or an evening spent under the clear Colorado sky. There’s a BBQ grill for a steak or a portobello, and endless opportunities for some outdoor relaxation.

The Neighborhood:
Manitou Springs, just 10 minutes west of Downtown Colorado Springs, is the area’s attraction ground-zero, the center of activity for visitors and guests. Most of the most well-known and publicized outdoor wonders, the places that people come here to visit, are located here or close to here. This home is in the heart of Manitou Springs. The base of Pikes Peak is just up the road, right next to the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, the base of Barr Trail and the world-renowned Manitou Incline. Garden of the Gods Park, with its famous, towering red rock formations, is 5 minutes away by car or 10 minutes away by bicycle. There is so much to explore, all RIGHT HERE.
Manitou is also historic, and was one of the West’s first “vacation” and travel destinations. Manitou Ave, just two blocks down the hill from our home, was built in the 1870’s and offers exceptional dining, drinking, cafes, galleries, artisan shops, and whimsical, Western-original gems featuring Native American art, furs, trapping & leather supplies, and outdoor adventure equipment. Much of the town is built along Fountain Creek, which flows beautifully year-round. Named after its historic artisan spring, there are historic fountains around town where guests can fill a water bottle or sample a taste. There are also multiple wedding and event venues here housed in Victorian mansions that still inspire awe and wonder. Lastly, located where it is at the base of one of the highest peaks in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, there’s still a very real natural feel here and it’s not common to see traffic along Manitou Avenue held up by a crossing herd of deer, or the occasional black bear or mountain lion!

- "We had a great stay at this property. The house is small but truly has everything that you need. Very clean, has a porch and a patio on the side of the house. Kids loved the cute swing on the porch. If you’re lucky you can see deers roaming on the street ( mornings). Kitchen is well equipped with plates, mugs, pots and pans, and a large refrigerator . The washer and dryer are very useful especially after a day-long hike. The outdoor table on the patio had room for 4 people. The pull out sofa in the living room is OK for smaller children. 3-4 minutes walking distance to the closest restaurant and ice cream. 15-20 min walking distance to the Cog Railway station."
