We decided to have dinner at a lovely restaurant half way between Saturnia and the hotel, as it seemed too difficult to drive a car into Pitlgliano. We only had one glich...upon arrival the owner didn't speak English (and we didn't speak Italian), so we didn't receive the paperwork about 'extra fees'. So upon checkout we were surprised with a fee for bathing robe ( hadn't been charged at other thermal resorts), cappuccinos for breakfast (even though breakfast was included in our hotel rate...and we hadn't been charged for those anytime in our 3 weeks of travel). So just a "heads up" on extra fees. Overall, a relaxing stay."

Once the Convent of San Francesco, this amazing six bedroom residence is part of a 16th century compound designed by the famous Renaissance architect Antonio San Gallo, the Younger, for the noble Orsini family. It is now a glorious house to rent in the splendid countryside of Tuscany, yet only a 10 to 15 minutes walk to the Medieval old town of Pitigliano, arguably the most ancient and most beautiful borgo in Tuscany.
Situated on 26 glorious and dramatic acres, the once convent is perched over a wooded ravine with dramatic views of distant vineyards and grazing sheep in the meadows below. The ravine property, Parco Orsini, adjoining the park, Poggio Strozzoni, holds Etruscan carved throne seats and reclining sculptural remains of a 16th century garden, created also by the noble Orsini family. This is a must to visit.
The building itself has been beautifully renovated with all modern conveniences; yet it remains a simply magical place, infused with the spirit of its history. Formerly, while a convent, the property was also a working farm producing wine and olive oil. Today, one of the Sitting Rooms of vaulted stone, was once the room where the wine was made in giant chestnut barrels which are still there, and make a dramatic feature. In the level below, is a hand-carved, tufa underground cantina (wine cellar) where the wine was stored. Today, it is a second sitting room with a large wood-burning hearth, and with dining for 20, or on a another, smaller table for 6, as well as the auxiliary kitchen... in other words, a great room. In addition, the actual working kitchen is well equipped with a 6 burner, powerful gas stove, a dishwasher, a toaster oven, refrigerators, food processor, blender, etc.... in a word, everything for serious cooks.
There are 7 bedrooms (6 double and 1 single), 7 bathrooms, (1 with an 800 lb ceramic tub), beautiful linen sheets and down pillows. There is a library and another very comfortable sitting room upstairs. An upstairs terrace with views over the lavender parterre and the ancient fig garden is gorgeous at sunset There are countless other very private spots for reading, visiting and resting.
Along the north side is a 60’ flowering arbor with outdoor dining, perfect for a shaded lunch in the summer. - "We (4 adults) stayed at the property in September 16. The house is situated in the countryside, about 10 km from Pitigliano. Advantage – it is very quiet and you are really undisturbed. Disadvantage- the last km is a dirt road, bumpy and with quite a few holes. The lady in charge was very nice and accommodating Three bedrooms come with three bathrooms which are rather well furbished. The room in the basement is nice but the window is very small, hence it is dark. The middle room has a bed and a sofa bed, so theoretically 4 people could sleep there but that would feel quite cramped. The top room is wonderful, all around are windows and it is spacious. BUT – you cannot open the windows fully as they are very big. Thus there is no breeze to be had and the room is hot, even in September we had to use a fan at night. I cannot imagine what it is like in full summer. For some people it might be important to know that the bathroom is not really separated from the bedroom as the separating wall does not meet the ceiling. AND – bring your own hairdryer and an adaptor for the socket. Sitting room and kitchen are one room with good equipment and a fire place which was very nice as the second half of our stay was rainy. Disadvantage – the sofa is old, sunken and not comfortable. The house is advertised for 8 – if 4 people want to share a bedroom - fine. It’s fIne when you can be outside, but the sitting -kitchen-room is too small for 8 inside for a comfortable evening. Sitting arrangements outside though are nice and inviting with an oven for pizza. One thing was really annoying: The house comes with a swimming pool. The water is quite cool but hey – it was September .No chemicals are being used; the water is permanently pumped and filtered. We liked the idea – until we found out that the electricity bill at the end was more than 130 € for one week due to the pool! I think that tenants should be aware of this rather high extra cost. Best idea would be to include the electricity in the rent. "
