Kanimbla View Clifftop Retreat
Cabin
Blackheath, New South Wales, Australia

• Accommodation in 2 x 3 bedroom architect designed eco-cottages and Studio
• 5 bathrooms
• Use of Lodge for dining, cooking and relaxing
• Wood burning fireplaces
• Valley views from nearby clifftop walk
• Exclusive use of tennis court and walking tracks

Kanimbla View Clifftop Retreat is located on one of the most beautiful properties in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains, just 90 minutes from Sydney.

Surrounded on three sides by unspoilt Crown bushland, you feel like you are staying in your own private National Park. Yet you are only 3 minutes away from beautiful Blackheath village.

The Guardian has featured Kanimbla View as one of the 30 "best green places to stay around the world" -- and the only one in Australia. Kanimbla View is one of only 7 eco-retreats to be featured in the Sydney Morning Herald Good Weekend 52 Weekends Away 2014.

Kanimbla View offers stylish, distinctive and comfortable accommodation -- from budget to eco-luxury.

We cater for couples, families and groups of up to 18. Groups (minimum 12) are accommodated in our two three-bedroom eco-cottages (two bedrooms in each can be configured as Kings or singles, the third bedroom contains a double and single bed), and Studio which is one large room with a Queen Futon and 3 single beds. Couples or families requiring a single cottage should contact the owners for a quote.

The retreat is ideal for holidays, celebrations, conferences and yoga retreats.

It also has an all-weather tennis court, boules pitch and 1.5 km of walking tracks.

There really is peace in this place.

Getting out and about

On the retreat itself you can play tennis, basketball or table tennis under a cathedral of gum trees. You might wander down to the boules/petanque area for a quiet game, or sit out on the heath deck and just drink in the distant views.

But most importantly you will want to explore our walking tracks and make your way down to your own private clifftop lookouts on our escarpment. With the aid of our maps and leaflets you can get to know a bit more about how this fragile environment can support such an abundance of plants and animals.

Beyond the retreat

If you want to go further afield than the retreat, then we are only 3 minutes away from Blackheath's excellent cafes, restaurants, galleries and bakeries. Another 5 minutes and you will find yourself at the doorstep to the Greater Blue Mountains National Park. The park offers some wonderful lookouts and walking tracks. But just a few minutes away from the retreat you can discover some equally inviting walks and views around Porter's Pass and Centennial Glen.

Beyond Blackheath you might take in a great film at Mt Victoria's welcoming, old-fashioned cinema at Mt Vic Flicks. Further west lie the Jenolan Caves. To the east you can explore more of the Blue Mountains bordering charming villages like Leura or Wentworh Falls.

Guest Reviews:

The owners really go above and beyond making you feel super comfortable. The place has everything you could need and so much more. The kitchen, wow it is HUGE and AMAZING !! Original 1895 cottage, magnificent uninterrupted views of valley.
Cabin
Blackheath, New South Wales, Australia

This character-filled original weatherboard home sits on expansive grounds with uninterrupted views over the stunning Kanimbla Valley. Enjoy a vast sky with magnificent sunsets and exceptional stargazing from the large west-facing verandah.

Please note, this property is not suited to guests seeking modern or luxury finishes. Instead, it offers a simple, authentic space for those who appreciate history, nature, and a peaceful setting with a stunning outlook. This is a largely unrenovated, old home built in 1895. While thoroughly clean, it does feature elements such as creaky doors, peeling paint, and an old bathtub with some rust. These features are reflected in the price and are part of the home’s original condition and charm.

The house includes a spacious kitchen, fireplaces in both the kitchen and lounge room, and a relaxed, rustic atmosphere. There is also a cosy sunroom and a front verandah that catches the morning sun.

The bushwalking near the house in Centennial Glen is exceptional; waterfalls, canyons and renowned rock climbing - all only 10 mins walk from the house. Or jump in the car and head to Govetts Leap and the Grand Canyon. Great swimming at Minihaha Falls, 15 min drive towards Katoomba.

Blackheath is a cute little village only 5 mins walk from the house, with a pub, bottle shop, grocer, bakery, delicatessen, butcher, great cafes and huge antique store and amazing bookshop.

Guest Reviews:

- "Our group - including extended family from 11 to 82, including some visiting from Spain and France - loved our stay at this property. The cottage, really quite a large house, is full of authentic charm, as well as tasteful, cozy decorations and furnishings. I felt completely relaxed and at home and my kids loved the small room with a view over the valley. That vista from the back porch is quite spectacular and we enjoyed cocktail hours on the back deck with the sunsets. The projection video was great for the kids and the kitchen is also very well equipped. We also explored some of the nearby walks, and were very glad to be walking distance from Blackheath town centre. I would 100% recommend as a wonderful, comfortable base for a stay in the mountains"

Artist-designed, hand-made, Rough Track Cabins #1
Cabin
Blackheath

One of two hand-built ironstone cabins on 29 acres right on the edge of the Blue Mountains National Park.

I'm Manda and I own and manage Rough Track Cabins with my partner, local artist Julie Paterson, the designer behind ClothFabric.

More than just a simple, cosy, sustainable bush haven, Cabin One is also a sort of gallery of artworks and furnishings hand-made and slow-stitched by Julie.

Above the Grand Canyon Track and below the Milky Way, we've made a place to walk, create and retreat.

The space
Our cabins were built by hand by forward-thinking environmentalists, back in the late '70s/early '80s. Recently we've renovated them to make a unique kind of accommodation - a gallery you can sleep in. We hope they spark a conversation about how we can all waste less and live more creative lives.

Our cabins are not shiny and new and deluxe: they are creative and sustainable, modest and mended. We wanted our guests to experience how lovely that can be.

I've scouted op-shops and eBay and the side of the road to score some fantastic vintage furniture. Julie has revived handsome old chairs with slow-stitching: she's made lampshades and curtains from vintage blankets and her own ClothFabric offcuts. And she's stitched haiku poems we wrote onto cushions and curtains. The cabin tells a story about the modest pleasures of using visible mending of our old things and vintage finds to make a calm and cosy space.

There's a ScrapCloth kit in each cabin with needles and threads and fabric pieces, so our guests can mend their jeans or slow-stitch on our curtains.

Ideal for a couple, each cabin has one queen-sized bed, a small but mighty kitchen, and a bathroom with a shower. The ironstone construction and orientation of the cabins mean they are well insulated from heat and cold. There's a slow-combustion fire for when it's chilly and a fan for warm summer nights.

Julie and I believe that pretty much everything in life is even better outside, so we've made a great little firepit area out the back. Pull up a chair, enjoy the surrounding bush, and if you're lucky, maybe you'll hear the lyrebird going through his repertoire.

Another great pleasure is a walk down to our private lookout on a saddle above the Grand Canyon Track. It's a fabulous spot to linger for a sunset drink, watching the light change and Black Cockatoos winging above you. Seriously, this is the life.

The traditional owners of the land where we live and work are the Darug and Gundungurra people. We acknowledge their connection to Country and pay respect to elders past, present and emerging.

Guest access
Your cabin, the Conservation Area, our lookout over the canyon. There is a guest parking space less than a minute's walk to the cabin.

Other things to note
Ask us when you're here about any of Julie's artworks in the cabins: they are for sale.

Because we border the National Park and we have Biodiversity Conservation Trust land just below the cabins, we don't allow guests to bring their pets.

The cabin has a queen-sized bed - it's very much suited for a couple - but for a supplementary fee, the daybed in the lounge/kitchen/dining space can be used for a third person. Let us know if that's what you need.

There's no WiFi here, and we reckon that's no bad thing. We'd love you take a break from the digital churn. But if you want or need to get online, you get good connectivity on your phone at the cabin.

We remember the Black Summer fires all too well, which is why we take risk management for fire very seriously. We will require guests to evacuate when we do. Guests will be refunded for every night we have to cancel because of fire risk.

Be aware that we are listed elsewhere, which means I always need to cross-check calendars to ensure availability.
