No other resort can compete with the RIU Santa Maria. There are at least three pools, five to six restaurants, 24 hour service. Hotel staff like Nilton at reception and the ladies at the coffee bar made my solo visit to the island much more enjoyable. The resort sent a bottle of brut to my room in recognition of my birthday (they must have noticed the date on my passport). Book room 6238 in block 6 for beautiful sea views and its proximity to the beach and pools! Also take advantage of the resort spa. Pro tip: download the RIU app to book dinners at the specialty restaurants. Food in the primary dining room is exquisite. Everything is perfect and stunningly clean. Front desk staff were helpful and responded to a request to fix the sink to drain properly and refill the soap dispensers (but this should be managed by the housekeeping anyway). Breakfast was very good, large variety of items. Supper was another story entirely - takes AGES to get any attention from a waiter and then another hour to actually get food. All sitting in the dark, because there's very little indoor dining area for supper (that I could see) and the outdoor seating has no practical lighting at all. Pool was nice, but always super windy so basically no use. Also not heated so only good during summer. "

- "The hotel overall was very good ,the only major criticism was poor language skills of some of the staff. We had to ask directions from hotel reps from other companies to find out where hotel facilities were. They are more geared up to German guests. However, enjoyed Boa Vista and this hotel and would go again. We had a suite with sea views with 2 balconies and really nice. worth the extra for the space and view. Varied selection of food with lots of fruit and fresh veg. Not enough sun loungers round the pool....always taken by very early rising guests.. and not enough sun beds on the beach. Beware of the wind!!! you don't notice just how hot it is because of the cooling wind, so its possible to get burnt very quickly without noticing.!!! Take plenty of sun cream and after sun. This is an ideal place just to chill out for a week or so as its quiet. However, we noticed as we were leaving, an influx of families with children and the hotel was full very quickly due to the beginning of the Easter school holidays. So if you like it more peaceful, chose a time when the kids are in school,"
