- " It was my first time staying at the property. The shared bathroom and shared kitchen was concern at first, but I got used to after the first night. On the first night, there was another guest sleeping on the couch in the shared living room. That MF snored like a loud dying pig. The walls are not that thick and I could hear him from my room. But, liked that the room opened to the balcony. The room, Room 2, where I stayed was close to a highway so the traffic noise was bearable, but the traffic died down in the evening. The balcony also has two plastic Adirondack chairs where I sat every morning watching the sunrise, if you could look beyond the power cables that sometimes interfered with the view. The property was within 20 min of where I needed to go. There’s a McDonald’s with an all-day/all-night drive through; would get my coffee and breakfast and sit on the balcony waiting for the sunrise. It would be nice to have a Keurig that is connected to the plumbing so no need to refill. There’s also a full size fridge/freezer where you can store your leftovers."

- "When we 1st arrived we were unsure what to think. Once in our condo, that is up on the 4th floor, we were pleasantly surprised at how clean, simply decorated, well stocked the condo was. Everything you need in the kitchen, dishes, oven, microwave, fridge, coffee pot, pots n pans, seasoning, etc. Bathroom had plenty of bath towels, beach towels, hairdryer, soap. On the balcony there were two chairs to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air, a huge Rubbermaid tote with snorkeling gear & sand toys, and two beach chairs. The view from the balcony is of the pool and several types of greenery; bushes, trees, etc. You can't really see the water from the condo but it is literally right behind the condo. We walked over to the beach, Carl Smith State Park, several times. We didn't use the pool at all as it was very dirty. There is no air conditioning in the condo but everyroom had a fan. There are two bedrooms each has a queen bed, nightstands & a dresser. It would have been nice to have a small cooler to use for drinks to take to the beach & maybe a window AC unit to help keep the condo cool. Overall happy with the condo, would recommend to others & would stay here again. Snorkeling right behind the condo was great, we saw TONS of turtles & quite a few fish too. "

Simply put, this property sits on one of the most gorgeous ocean-front locations in East Hawaii. Unlike other ocean-front homes, you will not need to walk to the end of a yard to appreciate the Pacific waves. Here, you will feel as if you are on a ship. Simply step out onto the deck, look down and there is the Pacific ocean lapping at the shoreline 100 feet below you. We have actually fished off the deck. We believe the quality of this view and proximity to dramatic breaking waves are unique among vacation rentals in East Hawaii. This is particularly so considering it is only a couple of short miles from quaint Hilo town, the seat of Hawaii County. During the whale season, humpbacks will breech and frolic so close to the house that, on occasion, it will seem as if they are putting on a show just for you. Sometimes the cove below is visited by schools of spinner dolphins, which number in the hundreds. At almost anytime, you can look out from the windows or deck and see surfers sliding down the face of silver waves at nearby Honoli'i beach. On most days, a giant cruise ship will sail out of the dawn and past the house in the morning and then past the house again at sunset, as it leaves Hilo Bay, festooned with a thousand glittering lights.

Please know that this is an older style Hawaiian home. If you are seeking luxury, you'll have to look elsewhere. The house is built from Redwood and is a single wall construction home. In other words, wood boards for walls, not the stud variety. Some of the doors are pocket doors as opposed to swing doors. Please don't expect the level of sophistication that you will find at resort properties. This is a simple house, built for a local family back in the 1950s. We have undertaken some modernization but essentially it is the same charming house that was constructed all those years ago.

The house is a 40 minute drive from Volcanoes National Park and a brief three minute drive from Hilo. It is perfectly located for exploring East Hawaii and a spectacular hour and a half drive from the beaches and town of Kona.

Aside from the spectacular view, one of the benefits of staying next to the ocean is the lack of pesky mosquitoes. The ocean breeze, which will keep you cool, also serves to drive most of them away. Unfortunately, the Big Island has been invaded by coqui frogs in recent years, which make a loud (not altogether unpleasant) chirping noise in the evening. Many B&Bs and vacation properties here actually supply their guests with earplugs. Luckily, the ocean breeze also keeps most of the coquis at bay. You will hear some chirping but it is extremely unlikely that you will find the noise too intrusive.

The house has a large kitchen and living room with picture windows overlooking the ocean and across the bay to Hilo Town. There is a master bedroom with a king-sized bed and french doors leading onto the deck and an outdoor shower. The second bedroom has a full and a twin bed. Each of the upstairs bedrooms has a large TV..

The living room features leather furniture and a gas fireplace for those very occasional dips in temperature. We have deliberately not put a TV in the living area as we hope that you will enjoy the spectacular view, uninterrupted by flickering images and perhaps read, chat or partake in some of the family games we have left for you. However, there is double-speed wireless internet connection throughout the house should you need it for your own devices. You will find binoculars for observing the whales, surfers, dolphins, cruise ships, sailboats and Hawaiian outrigger paddlers.

The deck features a large, expandable teak dining table with chairs. It is doubtful that you will want to eat indoors once you have experienced the pleasure of ocean-front dining, although there is an additional dining table in the living room, should you choose to. There is an additional table with all-weather chairs and if you need it, a folding table. Should you wish to entertain, there is ample seating for your guests. For relaxation, there are teak deck-chairs and a comfortable, quilted double hammock in which to swing to the sound of breaking waves. Should you wish, grab a pillow with a blanket and let the hammock rock you to a wonderful night's sleep under the stars.

The large kitchen is full equipped with everything you need for comfort and convenience: extensive granite counter-tops, a double-door stainless steel fridge with water and ice maker, a dishwasher, garbage disposer, a Keurig coffee maker with a complimentary selection of coffees, large microwave, blender, rice-cooker, slow-cooker, toaster and range. There is ample china and silverware for all your dining needs. Should you need them, you will find coolers for taking on your island adventures.

Outside, you will find a kayak, life-vests, boogie boards and snorkeling equipment. Please feel free to use them to enjoy the magnificent Pacific ocean, which undoubtedly will provide you with many happy memories during your stay in Hawaii. You will also find tennis rackets and balls as well as some other beach games to enjoy.

I have noticed that some vacation rental owners claim that their properties are much shorter driving distances to Hilo than is possible. Please bear in mind that any oceanfront property in lower Puna, claiming to be within the Hilo district, is at least a 50 minute drive from town, often a lot more.

- "We stayed with three small children. I didn’t realize the upstairs and downstairs don’t connect from inside (separate outdoor entrance to downstairs), but it still worked for us because there were air mattresses and pull out couches with plenty of additional sheets and bedding in the house. The kids enjoyed making forts with all these supplies at night in the living room. The downstairs just became a daytime hangout area for us. This location felt like an authentic Hawaiian experience! The front porch is stunning, we enjoyed all meals there with a picture perfect view. The house was well stocked with all the basics for cooking, snorkeling, boogie boarding etc. Appliances were clean and updated. Outdoor shower is very private and has hot and cold water, we used that for most of our showers instead of the indoor shower (just bc it was convenient to shower coming in from the beach). We stayed cool with the window air conditioner during the day, and loved the sounds of rain most nights while sleeping. Richardson Beach is wonderful, we checked out most beaches along the strip, and enjoyed Richardson the most, it was an easy walk across the street with kids and beach gear. Outdoor washer and dryer worked great for us, we were able to pack very light. We also had a few gecko friends make their way in, but they were harmless and part of the Hawaiian experience. There is nature everywhere… tropical fruit just falling in the yard to sample. It was a great house, we would stay again."

- "This place is absolutely amazing and exceeded our expectations, which unfortunately seems more rare in the post Covid world. It has everything and then some when it comes to amenities and creature comforts. The floor to ceiling windows that look out onto your private jungle is as stunning in person as anticipated, and they have small walking trails that are all yours to enjoy. It’s a tech savvy house with Alexa, phone chargers, Spotify channel, heated towel racks and heated bidet toilets. Luxury! The beds were super comfy, with the primary being nice and firm, and they provided soft robes. I’m pretty picky about my sleeping conditions and I slept so well here. That said, I enjoyed the coqui frogs and all the animal noises; some may not. The hot tub and outdoor showers were used everyday, as well as the amazing massage chair. Great location in a beautiful neighborhood. To note a few things some may not love as much: The neighbors pups were a bit vocal, sometimes very early in the morning, much like the Kauai roosters, and the rain can be loud on the metal roof. Nothing the owners can do, but wanted to mention for others if they need earplugs. Also, the heated towel racks are great, but if you have little ones, may want to look out for the one in the kitchen that is pretty low as they can be quite hot. We honestly didn’t want to leave for the Hilton on the Kona side! I have a feeling we will miss the home very much. And that is exactly how it felt; like home."

The property features a distant ocean view, many fruit trees, aquaponics, gardens, plenty of animals including dogs, Angus cows, chickens and a macaw named Li'i! Interacting with the animals on our ranch is part of the property's charm.

Our one bedroom beach cottage is located on a quiet one lane road leading to the ocean. While in a quiet location it is still just a few minutes drive from downtown Hilo, supermarkets, restaurants, airport, medical centers, and scenic parks and beaches.
There is a small beach cove located a few steps away. Guests can enjoy sunbathing, picnicking, and swimming during high tide. Just outside the cove is the open ocean where guests enjoy exploring tide pools or just ocean gazing at sea turtles feeding along the coast or dolphins playing out in the ocean.
Several of the areas at our home that our guests find they enjoyed the most were having early morning breakfast upstairs on the outdoor balcony and grilling and dining in the evenings in the large outdoor gazebo while listening to the ocean.
While there are ceiling fans throughout for guests who prefer enjoying just the islands breezes we recently decided to install a split level AC unit for guests who need the comfort of cooler indoor temperatures, especially during to our high summer day temperatures and humidity.
Our beach home works well for couples or couples with one or two little ones. There is a queen size bed in the bedroom and a queen size futon sofa sleeper in the front living room. There is also a full kitchen, full tub and shower bath, pack and play and 4 panel child play yard for little ones.

Note: Our one bedroom cottage is joined to a two bedroom fully furnished downstairs unit which accommodates larger families. We have recently separated the listing for easy bookings for couples who need just a one bedroom unit. As a family farm, we strive to be as self sufficient as we can by growing our own food and medicine organically while leveraging natural resources around us where possible.

You will be renting the entire upstairs 2 bedroom unit (over 1,200 square feet of living space) of our home with separate entrance complete with a kitchen, bathroom, a large screened in lanai (porch) and a front porch to watch the beautiful sunrise on a clear morning. Our kitchen comes fully equipped with a coffee maker, full cooking range with oven, pots and pans, pantry basics (cooking oil, salt and pepper) should you choose to prepare some meals during your stay.

Bathroom is stocked with shampoo, conditioner, body wash & a fresh set of towels. Beach towels will also be provided for your convenience.

Our space does not have a television intentionally so you can enjoy family time and the abundance of life on the farm. We are blessed with trade wind weather for most of the year and AC is not common here in this part of the island. Fans are provided in both bedrooms as well as a ceiling fan in the screened porch. On a clear evening, enjoy stargazing like you’ve never experienced before. The most noise you will hear will be from the flocks of wild-roaming chickens and the tiny but loud coqui frogs.

Sweet little spot tucked away downtown in Hilo with bright light and ocean breeze. Tropical gardens surround the house making it feel more remote. Located just 5-10 minutes walk or drive from the airport, groceries, banks, pharmacy, restaurants, beaches, waterfalls, and more. Perfect little home base for east Hawaii exploration, or islandwide adventures. Great for couples or small groups into gardening and sustainability. The space
The house is tucked away on a little gravel side street right downtown that you would never notice when passing by. Many guests have commented that it can be difficult to find, especially in the dark so be sure to check the directions for pictures and detailed info on how to locate the property. When you approach the house you'll come down the driveway where you’ll park and see the carport set up with an outdoor living area. It should be well lit if you’re coming home after dark with solar lights lining the driveway and light in the carport. This cozy and comfortable apartment has all the essentials you’ll need, and is the perfect place to crash after adventuring around the island, or if you’re arriving in Hilo on a late flight. Conveniently located in the downtown area, it’s a simple and clean second-floor space with lots of windows for natural light. There's usually a nice ocean or mountain breeze flowing through, as the house is just a few hundred yards from Hilo bay front. Guests are welcome to peruse the gardens outside. Depending on the season there may be soursop, starfruit, mountain apples, cacao, or avocados in the trees.
Things to consider before coming to Hawai'i:
The tropical weather in Hilo can be hot and/or humid at times. There is no AC in the house, but each room has a fan for guests to use.
If this is your first time in the tropics, you should also know that there are lots of insects and lizards here. You might even see a gecko on the kitchen counter, or hanging out near the lamps at night.
There are many fruit trees planted all around the house, and fruit flies are attracted to the fruit when it’s in season. Sometimes they will come in the house when the doors and windows are left open, or if the lights are left on at night.
In Hilo there are also lots of coqui frogs chirping at night. The house has gardens all around where they like to live. Many people find the frog's song to be charming, but earplugs are provided for guests who would like to use them.
There's a gym next door to the house on the adjacent property that's open from 4am-10pm most days. Occasional sounds of people working out, or kids soccer practice from over there are not uncommon.

Guest access
Much of Hilo can be accessed on foot or bike from the house. There is a Bike Share program with a couple different locations to pick up bikes near the house. If you're planning on leaving Hilo for adventures you should line up a car, since the Big Island is very big and difficult to get around outside of town. If you are driving, there is free offsite parking at the end of the street, next to the house.

Vive House INN is an Old Hawaiian Plantation Home built in the Colonial style for that era in 1897 with tasteful modern upgrades. Our Paris Room offers a Double / Full bed with mini fridge, hand sink TV and Wifi in the room. Fresh Paint and Brand New Flooring! The bathroom is across the hall and shared with two other adjacent rooms. The Common areas include living room, kitchen, dining room, and wrap around covered deck with lots of seating and lap top work stations. Free on site parking.

The space
This historical home has a four and a half foot entry door, with wrap around deck. Communal living room and dining room, "LIVE-IN" Host/ Co-Host and off street parking.

Guest access
The Paris Room is located on the upper floor, so you must be able to climb stairs. An AC is in every room for your comfort, as well as basic amenities like shower gel, shampoo, robe, etc.
Things to note: NO Smoking in the room, the house, or the front porch. Please go to the mailbox area on the sidewalk if you must smoke.
Trash! If you have excess trash and would like to dispose of it, the blue trash cans outside are available, BUT any trash that is placed in the blue trash bins, MUST be in a trash bag! Our trash service WILL NOT pick up our trash if there are loose trash items. They will only take it if its in a bag. So please help us by using a trash bag. If you need more, just ask us by messaging through the AirBnB app. Thank you ~

Other things to note
The Main house has 2 suites on the ground level, and 3 rooms with a shared bath on the second level.
The Paris room window has an AC, thus it does not open.
If you require an opening window to sleep, this may not be the room for you. The humidity in Hawaii is very high, thus we use an AC to help remove the moisture and cool the room.

Get the feel of old Hawaii at this old 1930s neighborhood where some houses on the street are either cute or ugly. The best part is the location - walking distance to parks, stores, Hilo Bay, 20 min. walk to Coconut Island park.

A bicycle is available for guests. Explore the bike trails, Farmers Market, Japanese Gardens.
Can be very noisy in sometimes with barking dogs next door. Then at night, loud tree frogs! Earplugs provided.
