Excellent location. 2 minute walk downtown Pacific Grove, 4 minute walk Lovers Point and 2 minute walk child-friendly Caledonia Park. Relatively close to Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row. Downstairs unit of an 1887 Victorian *duplex*.

Living room features a gas fireplace and comfy leather reading chairs. The unit has two bedrooms and comfortably sleeps four. There is also a sofabed in the living room that can sleep 1-2 people. Our City permit allows a maximum of five guests total.

Master bedroom features a California king bed, master bathroom and closet. Junior bedroom has a queen-size bed, bathroom, and small closet. Junior bedroom is very small in size. As mentioned, there is a sofabed in the living room.

The master bathroom has a walk in shower whereas the junior bathroom has a tub/shower.

Kitchen has a new floor and is the only room in the house not recently remodeled (stove and fridge are new, however). Kitchen has basic cookware and coffee is provided for the coffee maker. There is also a blender and toaster.

We remodeled the unit in 2021 and added soundproofing between the floors but it is an 1887 Victorian so it is not noiseless.

Like all other houses in Pacific Grove, the unit does not have air conditioning. Our warmest month is September with a mean high of 73.6F. We do have a high-quality large fan in one of the closets if there is an unseasonably hot day.

We use an electronic door lock so no check-in required.

Other Amenities: Cable television, wireless internet or wifi, private backyard, shared laundry located in side yard between kitchen and garage.

We subscribe to a large selection of cable television channels but do not have direct access to Netflix or Amazon Prime because the second remote caused confusion for some renters. Guests can connect their laptop to the television with an HDMI cable and stream any content from our wifi. We have spare HDMI cables in the cabinet; as backup, a hardware store is a few blocks away and also sells cables.

I walked to dinner, walked to Monterey, and just stood at the ocean. It was exactly what I needed to feel refreshed and restored. Lastly, it felt very safe. I had no worries staying by myself and felt safe and secure the entire time. The host was accessible and helpful and I knew if I had any issues I could contact him. I would definitely recommend!!"

This spacious and sun kissed penthouse is the perfect home away from home. Our building is one the most historic Victorians right in the heart of downtown. It is also the most photographed building in downtown Pacific Grove which we also call 'America's Last Home Town.' This charming penthouse has great views of downtown and the Monterey Bay. This is a completely furnished unit decorated in victorian charm and comforts of home with two (2) bedrooms and one (1) bath. This unit is perfect for up to four (4) guests. Come enjoy breakfast downstairs before walking through the beautiful downtown area for great shopping, two short blocks to the ocean, next door to our movie theatre, and 1 mile to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This unit is first class and very clean. Even though you are right in the downtown area, this unit is very quiet. Guests have said that it is more quiet than staying along the ocean drive.

It is an easy 2 block walk to Lover's Point and the breathtaking regional trail that winds along the Monterey Bay. You can walk south around the Asilomar State Beach or north to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row & Fisherman's Wharf. Don't forget to visit our beautiful Point Pinos Lighthouse.

Hop in your car and you can drive to Pebble Beach (17 Mile Dr.). It is only 5 minutes away, 10 minutes to downtown Carmel, 20 minutes to Carmel Valley and 45 minutes to Big Sur.

Kitchen and Dining
The remodeled kitchen offers a four-burner gas range, blue cabinets, vintage tile backsplash and a farmhouse apron sink, with plenty of counter space and prep area. On the other side of the kitchen is a small home office with desk and rolling chair, ideal for doing paperwork or computer work. A stacked washer and dryer is conveniently tucked into this space.

The 3-bedroom, 2-bath newly remodeled historic home, known as the C.A. McCoy House and built originally in 1887, features an open floor plan with modern amenities. Tall ceilings and windows that let in plenty of natural light give this residence a spacious ambiance, with easy-care flooring that is perfect for pet owners.

Besides being just steps from the beach, the 1100 square-foot home also offers easy access to attractions such as Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Links, Point Pinos Lighthouse and Asilomar State Beach, and to the Monterey Peninsula Recreation Trail, perfect for walking, running or cycling.

This charming historic studio was once owned by American author John Steinbeck. It's been featured in several articles: including “20 Romantic Getaways” and in NYT's "Frank Sinatra Slept Here, and So Can You" (August 2020).

'I bought a small house and garden in Pacific Grove...' (John Steinbeck: A Life in Letters). American author John Steinbeck wrote these words to a friend about this charming house he called home in the 1940s.

This cozy studio retreat has one bedroom with a queen bed and and a sitting area, a spacious full bathroom, and a fully stocked kitchen.

The studio is approximately 350 square feet. It is original 1920's architecture and has short doorways throughout the studio. Taller guests (anyone 5'10" or taller) will need to mind their heads passing through entry-ways and in the kitchen (it has low ceilings). The studio has been renovated throughout in December 2023 - new flooring, kitchen and bathroom.

It is one of three cottages on the property and has a unique and rich literary history, having belonged to John Steinbeck in the early 1940's. He used it as his writing studio and worked on novels including The Sea of Cortez while living here.

The Neighborhood
Pacific Grove has been called “Butterfly Town U.S.A” “The Most Romantic City in the U.S” “A Dreamy California Destination, ” as well as an idyllic place to get married, to honeymoon or to just hang out. Some of it is self-proclaimed, some the acclaim of people who have actually visited Pacific Grove.

You will find Pacific Grove on the very tip of the scenic, tree-shrouded Monterey Peninsula with a rocky coastline and an ambiance of charm, grace and beauty.

Founded in the 1870s as a Methodist summer retreat, Pacific Grove still bears the look and feel of yesteryear. As you stroll the residential streets admiring the charm of home after home, you will notice little plaques on many of the homes that bear the name of the original owner and the year in which it was built. To qualify for a plaque from the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove, a structure must look like it did when it was originally built.

Among its visitors are brightly colored orange-and-black Monarch butterflies, who overwinter in Pacific Grove after traveling up to 2,000 miles, arriving by the thousands starting in October, peaking around Christmas and departing by March.

Besides its scenic beauty and idyllic neighborhoods, Pacific Grove offers an eclectic downtown experience, with small boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, antique stores and more. Other vibrant shopping areas are along Central Avenue at the entrance to Pacific Grove from Cannery Row and at the top of Forest Avenue on Forest Hill.

Getting around
The Writer's Studio is centrally located and a short walk from many scenic destinations. It is located a half mile from The Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row, as well as downtown Pacific Grove. Lover's Point beach is just one mile away and downtown Monterey is two miles away.

There are many fantastic restaurants, activities and shops in the area.

# The House and Living Space
Built by William Willis in 1922, this historical home has been remodeled from floor to ceiling. You'll find inviting human-scaled rooms, wood furniture, and bright common areas with plenty of windows. The kitchen has a gas range, cutlery, cooking equipment, major appliances, engineered stone countertops, and a separate dining area. The bedrooms at the rear of the house, away from the street, are quiet and have blackout curtains, comfortable furnishings, and firm, high-end mattresses. The master bedroom has a queen bed and the second bedroom has two twin XL beds (which are the same length as a queen bed).

# Private Parking and Entrance
Park in the private driveway on the side of the house. Enter through the side door by using your keypad access code, provided before check-in (no key is needed). If you arrive after dark, then a motion-sensor light will illuminate the driveway and side door as you pull in. Switches for the house's interior lights are just inside the side door.

# Guest Safety
The detached cottage next door has a video doorbell.

# Getting Around
The house's central location is perfect for all things Pacific Grove, Monterey, Carmel, and Pebble Beach. You can fill your day with plans and change them at a moment's notice. Our guests arrive by car, yet many walk or bike for all or most of their stay. Both downtown Pacific Grove and the ocean are a short stroll away. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a 1.7-mile coastal walk or bike ride, the Pebble Beach gate is a 1-mile bike ride, and Carmel Beach is a moderately hilly 8-mile bike ride. The Pacific Grove portion of the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail has separate paths for walkers and cyclists and offers miles of spectacular views of the ocean and rugged coastline. Longer trips (Point Lobos, Big Sur, Carmel Valley) typically require a car.

# House Rules
AGE 35+ TO BOOK. You must be age 35 or older to book this house.

NO THIRD-PARTY BOOKINGS. As the responsible party, you can't book someone else's stay. You must be an overnight guest during the entire stay, from check-in to checkout.

FOUR OCCUPANTS MAX. No more than four guests are allowed in the house, without exception.

KIDS AGES 10+ ONLY. Every guest must be age 10 or older. The house has features that aren't suitable for young children.

NO PETS OR ASSISTANCE ANIMALS. Expedia Group has granted this property a health-based exemption from its service animal policy, owing to the medical risks that animals pose to the owner's family. No pets, emotional support animals, or service animals are allowed in the house or on the property; if you're traveling with any animal, then instead book one of the many pet-friendly rentals in the area. More details are below.

QUIET HOURS. Quiet hours are between 10:00 PM and 8:00 AM by town ordinance. No interior noise (human or device) can be audible to neighbors during quiet hours.

CHECK-IN. Keyless self check-in is between 4:00 PM and 10:00 PM, using the provided keypad access code. Request early check-in in advance.

CHECKOUT. Check out by 10:00 AM. Request late checkout in advance.

PARKING. When you arrive, park in the driveway. The driveway is to the right as you face the front of the house. If you have a second vehicle, then park it in tandem in the driveway or on the street in front of the house or yard.

TWO VEHICLES MAX. Guests are limited to two vehicles by town ordinance.

NO OVERSIZED VEHICLES. The driveway cannot hold recreational vehicles (RVs) or tow trailers, nor can they be parked in front of the house. Local laws prohibit parking oversized vehicles on any public street between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM.

NO EV CHARGING. The house lacks amperage for charging electric vehicles (doing so on a shared outlet can trip circuit breakers). The nearest Level 3 chargers are two minutes away at 207 16th St, Pacific Grove (City Parking Lot 2). Tesla Superchargers are four minutes away at 200 Country Club Gate Center, Pacific Grove.

NO PARTIES OR EVENTS. No parties, events, or gatherings of more than four people (only checked-in guests) are allowed.

NO VISITORS. No visitors, third parties, or service providers (chefs, masseuses, etc.) are allowed in the house or on the property at any time. A visitor is anyone who is not a checked-in guest.

NO GUEST-SWAPPING. Only the original checked-in guests are allowed in the house. If a guest checks out early, then another person cannot take his or her place.

NO SMOKING, VAPING, OR MEDICINAL MARIJUANA. A violation cancels your rental agreement immediately without refund. Federal law, which supersedes California law, does not recognize or protect medicinal marijuana possession or use.

COOKING RESTRICTIONS. You can prepare meals in the kitchen. Out of consideration for the next guests, you can't use ingredients that leave strong or lingering odors, including fish, seafood, curry, fermented foods, non-neutral oils, aromatic spices and pastes, chilies, and boldly scented vegetables. Oil-based cooking and deep frying are prohibited. For such meals, you're welcome to order restaurant delivery or takeout. A violation forfeits part or all of your deposit for cleaning.

PLUMBING AND DRAINS. Never flush wipes (even so-called "flushable" wipes) or anything other than toilet paper. Wipes= clogged pipes= plumber. The kitchen sink lacks a garbage disposal. Throw coffee grounds, fruit rinds, and food scraps in the trash. Don’t pour cooking oil, grease, pan drippings, salad dressings, or sauces down any drain.

NO INCOMING DELIVERIES. Any items delivered directly to the property will be refused and returned to the sender. Instead, take delivery via US Postal Service General Delivery, or at a local UPS Store, FedEx Office, Amazon Hub, or mailbox service.

HOST'S AREAS. Not available for your use are the host's personal and storage areas (attic and locked office). Don't access or enter them. The detached cottage next to the house is the host’s personal space.

NO ANIMALS. Expedia Group has granted this property a health-based exemption from its service animal policy. No pets or assistance animals, including emotional support animals and service animals, are allowed in the house or on the property, owing to the medical risks that they pose to the owner and his family members, who suffer from allergic asthma triggered by animal dander, fur, and saliva. This property includes shared space, so federal law permits excluding all animals as health and safety hazards; the ADA does not overrule legitimate safety requirements. If you bring or check in with an animal, then an Animal Control officer will be summoned to remove it to a public animal shelter as a health and safety hazard. An animal entering the house cancels your rental agreement immediately with no refund of rents or deposits. An animal cannot stay in a vehicle parked on the property. Falsely claiming that your animal is an ADA-compliant service dog is unlawful. California law (§365.7) forbids such verbal or written fraud, and a fake service dog is trivially easy to identify by the behavior of the animal and its handler. And the side cottage was great for guests and having a separate private room for zoom calls/business. And thankful I had the garage for my bike and golf clubs. The neighborhood

Pacific Grove is a beautiful small beach town with a relaxed atmosphere. There are plenty of beach access and scenic hiking/biking trails from our home.
The house is on 17 Mile Drive and backs to a little alley road that runs along a gorgeous, wooded park. If you visit us during the months of October through February, you can witness the magic of the Monarch butterfly migration. The Monarch Sanctuary is just around the corner!
Asilomar State Beach and Conference Center, beach trails, PG Golf Links, Point Pinos Lighthouse, Lover's Point, Pacific Grove Natural History Museum, fine restaurants, and Downtown are all within walking distance.
The Links at Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach, Carmel River State Beach, Carmel Mission, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and Fisherman's Wharf are all a very short drive away.
Take a ten minute drive south to Carmel's white sand beaches, where you can enjoy a picnic and bonfire until midnight. Enjoy the downtown, or play a round of golf at Pebble Beach.
Drive another ten minutes south to find the beautiful Point Lobos Reserve and the California Sea Otter Refuge. You could also drive on down to Big Sur and beyond along the scenic Hwy One.
Less than ten minute drive North will take you to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Museums, Cannery Row, and Fisherman's Wharf.
We are a 20 minute drive from the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca race track.
There are endless places to visit. You'll want to keep coming back!

Getting around

It is a short walk or drive to almost all the attractions in the Monterey peninsula.
We are also on the 1 Asilomar-Monterey bus route (bus stops less than 100 feet away -on both directions) It will take you to Fisherman's Wharf, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Downtown Pacific Grove, Point Pinos, Light House, Pacific Grove Golf Course, Asilomar Beach and Conference Center, Senior Center, and Lovers Point. The bus connects to Monterey Transit Plaza (MTP) where you can connect to other transportation systems that would take you south to Los Angles or North to San Francisco.

Other things to note

•If you are arriving after dark, please note that the house is in a forested neighborhood and some street signs are hard to see at night. So please map out the route for your convenience.
•The house is on the famous 17 Mile Drive, so expect some tourist traffic during the day. The back street (almost an alley) is quiet.
•Pacific Grove Ball Park is 500 ft away. Kids games are sometimes on weekends and you could hear some cheering voices from the garden.
•The front entry has six steps and the back entry has four.
•The lot has ranch style fencing and is open to the streets from the front and back. Please supervise your young children if they are out in the garden.
•Refrigerator tends to fill up with good food left behind by other guests. So I recommend checking the refrigerator before going shopping.
•Deer roam around in the property and in the neighborhood. Please drive slow coming down the back street as they like to visit our yard. Please do not feed them.
•Switchable night lights provided for your safety at night.
•Emergency card with useful information is on the refrigerator. First aid kit and flash light are in the bench storage in the mudroom by the back entry. The fire extinguisher is under the kitchen sink. Please use the fire extinguisher only for true emergencies.
•We have a Raccoon family visiting us at night to checkout the outside garbage bin. I have put a bungee cord across the lid to avoid them getting into it. Please secure the cord back when you use the garbage bin. Thank you.
•Our neighborhood is woodsy and close to natural protected land and can get very dark at night. The flash light (provided) comes in handy for night walks. Also recommend downloading the flashlight app if you have an iphone.
•The Monarch Home is enrolled in the Aquarium ticketing program that offers a two-day pass for the price of one. Please visit the link below to buy tickets. Please note I do not keep a commission of any sort and it is for your convenience only.

This home features a fully-equipped galley kitchen with beautiful stone countertops and a Keurig® coffee maker. Pass-throughs allow for easy service to the Dining Room, just off the Living Room.
Have your coffee in the adjoining breakfast nook filled with light from windows on three sides. Alternatively, use this airy space as your temporary office. A large, flat screen Samsung TV with a Bose soundbar streams over WiFi only and guests may log into their own Netflix/Amazon etc. account information and may use various apps to stream programming.
Adjoining the living room with pass-through access to the Galley Kitchen, the dining room seats 4 easily.

Street parking in front of the home is plentiful. Across the street from a large field and middle school. Children visiting the home may like to go to the track, field or play structures to play outside of school hours. It is a great place for walking laps or playing some catch or frisbee in the field.

Front of Home is terraced and has quite a few steps up. The elevation, however, provides enjoyable filtered views of the Pacific Ocean.

This home is a monthly rental and we request that all nights of your stay are within the same calendar month. Some exceptions may be possible, with the approval of our team and the homeowner. Extended stays are often possible.

Please note that a partially attached guest suite at the rear of the property is used occasionally. The guest suite has a separate entrance facing another street and is fully contained so your privacy will be assured.

Our place is close to Carmel and Monterey, some of the best dining, family-friendly activities, Fisherman's Wharf, Pebble Beach, The 17-mile Drive, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Lover's Point Beach, Downtown Pacific Grove, Downtown Monterey, and Asilomar Beach. Point Lobos is about 10 mins and Big Sur is only 45 mins away!

The space
This is really an entire place to yourself! VERY CLEAN bedroom with a queen-size bed and an optional roll-a-way fold-out bed that you can set up. Linens, pillows and blankets provided. There is a TV w/Firestick. Please see pictures for more info on room. Private bathroom, private parking and private entry to rooms with lock. Room is attached to the home but blocked from any entry/exit into main house. There is no shared space.

Guest access
Guests have private entry to their room with lock and a courtyard with outdoor table and chairs. THERE IS NO SHARED SPACE! Also, they will have their own free parking spot for up to two vehicles. Parking is in the right driveway of our home.

Other things to note
For the safety of all, the property and common area outside is under surveillance. The wall leading into the main home is locked from both sides. During the day, there is a certain level of noise you would expect from a family with children. We will do our best to be considerate in the early morning and late evening hours. We provide ear plugs and a sound machine (located in nightstand drawer) in case you plan to sleep during the day or you're a light sleeper. If you are looking for complete silence during the day and need to sleep during the day, this space may not be the right fit.

Also note that our rates will fluctuate depending on season, events and demand.

Charming 1935 cottage located in the Coastal Zone of Pacific Grove. The cottage has a full size washer and dryer and fully equipped kitchen with a separate dining room. The kitchen has pots/pans, bake ware, dishes, silverware, coffee pot, microwave, toaster, and a hot/cold purified drinking water dispenser. There is a television in the living room and one in the bedroom. Both TVs have Rokus, which are already signed in to Netflicks and Hulu. Fireplace can be used as gas or wood burning. Lots of firewood stacked on the property for guest use. Just a short walk to the Beach, and a few minutes drive to Cannery Row, the Monterey Aquarium, 17 Mile Drive, Monterey Pier, Spanish Bay golf course, the Monarch butterfly sanctuary, the historic Point Pinos Lighthouse and so much more. This cottage is in a forested neighborhood with very large trees and quiet streets. At night you can sit outside at the firepit and see oh so many stars while roasting marshmallows and listening to the ocean surf. It is the perfect place for a remarkable stay!!

This house is a duplex, with the main cottage in the front of the house and a studio in the back of the house. This Airbnb rental is for the entire front (main) cottage. The space is completely private. You have access to the front door and the small front yard of the house nestled behind the small gated entrance.

As the house was originally built in 1898, there is no dedicated parking. Guests use street parking, which is generally easy with the exception of large events such as the car week parade. There is a driveway to the right of the house, but that is not our property. Public transportation is also within short walking distance to the house.

The space
This wonderful house has two bedrooms and a full bathroom with bathtub. Bedroom one has a queen size bed, the second bedroom has two twin beds. I go a little overkill on clean - everything in the house is washed/cleaned after each guest - mattress pads, blankets, quilts everything! All the mattresses and pillows are covered with protectors of the highest quality. Sheets and towels are all high-end Lands End products, sterilized after each stay.
Pillows are replaced with brand new pillows on a regular basis.
I have a professional cleaning company come between every guest and clean the whole house.
Paper products are provided - toilet paper and paper towels, plus extra in the linen closet. Hand, dish and laundry soap are also provided!

There are two wonderful outdoor spaces for your enjoyment. The private front yard has a bench and side table. And the back area there are comfy outdoor chairs an outdoor dining table. An excellent spot for morning coffee.

For a quiet day in town there are restaurants, a bookstore, several antique stores, charity thrift stores, the library and delightful locally owned shops all within a five minute walk.

Groceries and most everything you may need can be purchased at our local Grove Market- open everyday.
Monday afternoon is the Farmer’s Market on Central Avenue in front of the library.

Pacific Grove is a Butterfly Town and in October the Monarchs arrive.
A visit to the Butterfly Sanctuary is magical.
