'I bought a small house and garden in Pacific Grove...' (John Steinbeck: A Life in Letters). American author John Steinbeck wrote these words to a friend about this charming house he called home in the 1940s.

This cozy studio retreat has one bedroom with a queen bed and and a sitting area, a spacious full bathroom, and a fully stocked kitchen.

The studio is approximately 350 square feet. It is original 1920's architecture and has short doorways throughout the studio. Taller guests (anyone 5'10" or taller) will need to mind their heads passing through entry-ways and in the kitchen (it has low ceilings). The studio has been renovated throughout in December 2023 - new flooring, kitchen and bathroom.

It is one of three cottages on the property and has a unique and rich literary history, having belonged to John Steinbeck in the early 1940's. He used it as his writing studio and worked on novels including The Sea of Cortez while living here.

The Neighborhood
Pacific Grove has been called “Butterfly Town U.S.A” “The Most Romantic City in the U.S” “A Dreamy California Destination, ” as well as an idyllic place to get married, to honeymoon or to just hang out. Some of it is self-proclaimed, some the acclaim of people who have actually visited Pacific Grove.

You will find Pacific Grove on the very tip of the scenic, tree-shrouded Monterey Peninsula with a rocky coastline and an ambiance of charm, grace and beauty.

Founded in the 1870s as a Methodist summer retreat, Pacific Grove still bears the look and feel of yesteryear. As you stroll the residential streets admiring the charm of home after home, you will notice little plaques on many of the homes that bear the name of the original owner and the year in which it was built. To qualify for a plaque from the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove, a structure must look like it did when it was originally built.

Among its visitors are brightly colored orange-and-black Monarch butterflies, who overwinter in Pacific Grove after traveling up to 2,000 miles, arriving by the thousands starting in October, peaking around Christmas and departing by March.

Besides its scenic beauty and idyllic neighborhoods, Pacific Grove offers an eclectic downtown experience, with small boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, antique stores and more. Other vibrant shopping areas are along Central Avenue at the entrance to Pacific Grove from Cannery Row and at the top of Forest Avenue on Forest Hill.

Getting around
The Writer's Studio is centrally located and a short walk from many scenic destinations. It is located a half mile from The Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row, as well as downtown Pacific Grove. Lover's Point beach is just one mile away and downtown Monterey is two miles away.

There are many fantastic restaurants, activities and shops in the area.

This is a wonderful location. It is located in Downtown Pacific Grove. You are surrounded by everything you could want or need. Restaurants, Cinema, great shops, churches, grocery store, drug store, bakery are all at your finger tips. The ocean can be seen because you are only a couple of blocks away from the beach. As mentioned before, walking distance to the Aquarium, Cannery Row, and the shopping Outlets.

Five minute walk to Bookworks coffee shop- Grab an early morning coffee and sweet treat then enjoy a ten minute stroll to Lovers Point Cove on Monterey Bay.

Make a day walking along the Bay Recreation Trail- north one flat mile to the Aquarium & Cannery Row.
Or head south to Point Pinos, The Lighthouse and Asilomar State Beach. Either way you will experience the beauty of our area and most likely see Pelicans, Sea Otters, Deer and sometimes The Great Blue Heron.
For the more adventurous- there are many hiking trails in nearby Pebble Beach and the world famous Point Lobos is a short drive away.
Bicycles, Surreys & Kayaks can be rented at Lovers Point beach.

Pacific Grove Golf Links is five minute drive away. 18 holes with stunning views. The clubhouse has a restaurant with a great breakfast.

For a quiet day in town there are restaurants, a bookstore, several antique stores, charity thrift stores, the library and delightful locally owned shops all within a five minute walk.

Groceries and most everything you may need can be purchased at our local Grove Market- open everyday.
Monday afternoon is the Farmer’s Market on Central Avenue in front of the library.

Pacific Grove is a Butterfly Town and in October the Monarchs arrive.
A visit to the Butterfly Sanctuary is magical.

No permanent pets on the property, but we occasionally take care of the sweetest little “Coco” dog…she is never outside in the shared patio alone.

The bathroom, kitchen and living room are shared with the hosts!

A chic urban dwelling in downtown PG. You can live right by the ocean, and still be amid the bustle of a sleepy, friendly town.
Behind a “storefront,” you will find a spacious studio with a tiny gourmet kitchen, heated bathroom floors and a private entrance. Enjoy nature, the charming downtown, and all that the Peninsula has to offer.
You can use the storefront as a private sitting room or office. Additional arrangements can be made to use the storefront as a walk-in retail or office.

The space
You have the "store," the studio behind the store with a mini-porch to Gardner's Alley. There is a also a private parking spot in the lot across the street. There is an additional parking spot available for $70 per month. Note: it is chilly and foggy in PG, especially in the winter.

You enter the apartment through the store or a back porch behind the apartment on “Gardner’s Alley,” which you access from a couple stores up.

The space
This lovely ocean view property is part of a triplex, but feels like a completely separate home. The living room, anchored by a stone fireplace, is one you'll never want to leave, and the kitchen—with two-toned painted cabinetry, exquisite granite and tumbled travertine—is straight out of a magazine. It has bar seating, stainless LG appliances, and a five-burner gas range with a convection oven. The adjoining dining area seats six, and there are views of the sea throughout. The master bedroom and the guest room—both with King beds—share a stunning bath: two lavs and a walk-in shower outfitted with bronze fixtures and accented with warm golden stone and granite. French doors off the kitchen open to a deck with a table, chairs, umbrella and a barbecue. You'll be spending a lot of time here. Framed by silvery eucalyptus, it's perfect for dining al fresco or relaxing in the sun, while listening to the wind rustle through the Monterey Pines. Accessed via stairs from the street or directly from the single car garage below the patio, the Monarch suite shares a laundry room (adjacent to the garage) with the two one-bedroom units.

You will be close to everything when you stay at this centrally-located Lover’s Point studio. Steps to the beach, 2 blocks to Lover’s Point and a couple more to downtown Pacific Grove. Walking distance to the Aquarium and Cannery Row along the coastal trail.

The space
There is a family that lives upstairs all year round. For privacy reasons, no access is provided to the upstairs unit or the upstairs balcony.

Parking is along Ocean View Blvd on both sides. There is usually a space available right in front. (See exterior photos).

There is a dining table, a small kitchenette area, with a microwave, sink and coffee maker. There is also a Nespresso machine on the shelf.

There are always extra sheets in the linen closet next to the shower in the bathroom. The bathroom has a floor heater that is cozy and warm.

Our studio doesn’t have air-conditioning, and it’s never needed in our climate—which you’ll find is common for homes along the coast. Heat is from space heaters or the floor heater.

Outside is a spacious deck with a new propane gas grill, patio lounge furniture and some patio tables for enjoying the sunshine and breeze from the bay.

“Steps to the beach” is no exaggeration. Beautiful Lover’s Point Park and beach is a three minute walk. There are also beach access points across from the restaurants at Lover’s Point, and going the other way down Ocean View Blvd at nearby Perkins Park

Three Mermaid’s Cove is located on the desirable Mermaid Avenue in Pacific Grove. This modern Penthouse provides views of the ocean and is just steps away from Ocean View Boulevard’s majestic ocean front. Take a walk down to the end of the street to Lover's Point Beach or take a stroll a few blocks up to town and enjoy a multitude of wonderful restaurants, great coffee, and PG’s quaint neighborhood. Experience PG like a local! Only a short distance to the Aquarium, Monterey, and Carmel.

The space
Three Mermaid's Cove is a stylish Penthouse in a Triplex. Upon entering the common area shared with the downstairs unit there are 15 steps leading to the entry of the Penthouse. Upon entry, you are greeted with floor to ceiling windows with peaks of the bay. Enjoy the view from the living room, gourmet kitchen, and balcony. The balcony is the perfect place to enjoy an outdoor meal or take in the morning sunshine with a cup of tea while listening to the symphony of the bay.
There are two master suites. One suite offers a queen size bed and the other has two twin beds. Both suites have beautifully tiled bathrooms, one with a stall shower and the other with shower over tub. There is extra sleeping by way of a trundle bed with two twins.
The kitchen is fully equipped and updated. The home’s open floor plan gives a chef the ability to prepare a great meal while entertaining. Featuring an electric stove with oven, built-in microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, and marble countertops.
The floor coverings are hardwood throughout the living room, bedrooms, kitchen, and tile in the bathrooms.

A washer and dryer are available in the shared laundry room.
The home is heated by a gas wall heater and electric wall heaters in the bedrooms.
