Cottage at the Cove is a lovely recently refurbished 1884 vintage Victorian located just steps from Lover's Point park and beach in the Retreat District. The oceanfront recreation trail leads you to the Point Pinos Lighthouse to the west and the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row to the east. The wonderful Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course is just around the corner. 'I bought a small house and garden in Pacific Grove...' (John Steinbeck: A Life in Letters). John Steinbeck wrote these words to a friend about this charming house he called home in the 1940s.

The Space
This cottage has a unique and rich literary history, having belonged to John Steinbeck in the early 1940's. It has been renovated to pay homage to the period and history of the property.

This darling home, known as The Steinbeck Cottage, has a beautiful living room with a tent cathedral ceiling. It's focal point is the fireplace, richly adorned with carvings of birds and flowers. It has a queen sleeper sofa, a love seat, two reading chairs and a flatscreen TV.

There is a large bedroom, accommodating a queen bed, a sitting area, and a cozy electric fireplace. There is a fully stocked kitchen with everything you need to create great meals. The dining room has a farm table and is surrounded by floor to ceiling picture windows, overlooking the garden and offering peaks of the bay. The beautiful bathroom features white subway tiles in the shower and blue Moroccan lantern tiles on the floor.

The front yard offers an outdoor sitting area. Guests can also enjoy beautiful views of the garden from the sitting area just right outside the steps of the back door.

The cottage is approximately 900 square feet. It is original architecture from the 1920’s and has short doorways throughout the cottage. Taller guests will need to mind their heads when passing through the rooms.

Interaction with Guests
While The Steinbeck Cottage is one of the three cottages on the property, it offers plenty of privacy and a dedicated outdoor sitting area.

The Neighborhood
Pacific Grove has been called “Butterfly Town U.S.A” “The Most Romantic City in the U.S” “A Dreamy California Destination, ” as well as an idyllic place to get married, to honeymoon or to just hang out. Some of it is self-proclaimed, some the acclaim of people who have actually visited Pacific Grove.

You will find Pacific Grove on the very tip of the scenic, tree-shrouded Monterey Peninsula with a rocky coastline and an ambiance of charm, grace and beauty.

Founded in the 1870s as a Methodist summer retreat, Pacific Grove still bears the look and feel of yesteryear. As you stroll the residential streets admiring the charm of home after home, you will notice little plaques on many of the homes that bear the name of the original owner and the year in which it was built. To qualify for a plaque from the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove, a structure must look like it did when it was originally built.

Among its visitors are brightly colored orange-and-black Monarch butterflies, who overwinter in Pacific Grove after traveling up to 2,000 miles, arriving by the thousands starting in October, peaking around Christmas and departing by March.

Besides its scenic beauty and idyllic neighborhoods, Pacific Grove offers an eclectic downtown experience, with small boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, antique stores and more. Other vibrant shopping areas are along Central Avenue at the entrance to Pacific Grove from Cannery Row and at the top of Forest Avenue on Forest Hill.

Getting Around
The Steinbeck Cottage is centrally located and a short walk from many scenic destinations. It is located a half mile from The Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row, as well as downtown Pacific Grove. Lover's Point beach is just one mile away and downtown Monterey is two miles away.

There are many fantastic restaurants, activities and shops in the area.

- Check-in time is 4:00 pm and check-out time is 11:00 am.
- There is a firm no smoking, no drugs and no vaping policy.
- There is a no pet policy.
- We do not have a washer/dryer on the property for guest use.

- "Great central location, close to everything. The cottage is surprisingly spacious, very clean and well appointed. There was plenty of space for our belongings. The sitting furniture in the living room is very comfortable, as is the bed. The dining area is especially nice, with a large table and lots of light. The kitchen is equipped with everything one needs for simple cooking. The place may not be optimal for very tall people, as the ceiling is low in some areas. The hosts are wonderful, friendly and responsive. The cancellation policy is very generous. Not having the laundry facilities or the dishwasher was a bit inconvenient, but on the whole we had a very comfortable stay. Will be coming again!"

It is popular for weddings and is home of the annual Feast of Lanterns pageant and fireworks celebration.

Take a stroll down one of the many trails with never-ending picturesque ocean views. Quite a few impressive golf courses from Pacific Grove Golf Links to Black Horse/Bayonet (20 min drive) to the highly esteemed Pebble Beach Golf Courses on 17 mile drive. We are Dog Friendly.

The cottage has a full sized washer and dryer and a fully equipped kitchen with a separate dining room. The kitchen has pots/pans, bake ware, dishes, silverware, a coffee pot, microwave, toaster, and a hot/cold purified drinking water dispenser. There is a television in the living room and one in the bedroom. Both tvs have Rokus which are already signed in to Netflicks and Hulu. The fireplace inside can be used for gas or wood burning fires. There is LOTS of firewood stacked on the property for guest use. Just a short walk to the beach and a few minutes drive to: Cannery Row, the Monterey Aquarium, 17 Mile Drive, the Monterey Pier, Spanish Bay Golf Course, the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, the historic Point Pinos Lighthouse, and so much more! The cottage is in a forested neighborhood with lots of large trees and quiet streets. At night you can sit outside at the fire pit and see so many stars while roasting marshmallows and listening to the ocean surf. It is the perfect place for a remarkable stay!!

- "The Pacific Grove cottage is an absolutely charming little home in a quiet neighborhood of architecturally interesting, colorful Victorian cottages. It is in a small, quaint town with cute little shops and restaurants walking distance away on the Monterey Bay. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is nearby and the hosts provide passes to this.The cottage itself is physically pleasing and has everything you might need, plus special little touches like beautiful stationary and cards, gourmet coffee and tea. There are two bedrooms. One has a queen, sleep number bed. The second has two twins. The bed is comfortable and attractive. We were able to fit a small folding table in the corner of the second room with a folding chair that we brought for our computer since we moved in for four months. That was tight. The living room has inviting furniture and a large TV. The house has books and games. The kitchen is complete for cooking, although the dining table is small. It worked well for the two of us, but could seat only 3. The yard has beautiful landscaping, a large outdoor couch, other furniture and a BBQ. You can tell inside and out that the hostess is an interior designer!We had a few minor issues with the TV, a faucet, and the program on the bed. Our calls to the hosts were promptly answered and the issue addressed. No complaints there.Our overall impression is this is an excellent little home near the ocean, in a great neighborhood, with outstanding hosts."

We provide guests with a password for our super fast WiFi network. There is no television but you can easily log into your devices. And there are plenty of books, beaches, tide pools, otters, whales, and the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium to entertain you.

We're eager to make sure you're comfortable and settled in. We are happy to answer questions about the little house, the friendly neighborhood, parking and public transportation. We provide a guide book with recommendations for restaurants, cafes, shops, golf courses, and museums, and how to reach them. Here's a preview:

The City of Pacific Grove was founded as a Methodist retreat and gradually grew into a town with full-time residents, rich in history. In contrast to Monterey, which grew up around the fishing industry, PG was a retreat for city folks looking to escape the cold summers of San Francisco. It's a small town full of quaint Victorian architecture and cottages like ours built on lots originally sold as sites for camping tents. Next door, Asilomar Park and Conference Center, designed by famed architect Julia Morgan, began as a retreat for the YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association). The Point Pinos Lighthouse is the oldest continually operating lighthouse on the west coast.

The sheltered white sand beach at Lovers Point is ideal for families with small children, a jumping off point for scuba divers and a favorite photo spot for vacationing newlyweds. Each September a popular Triathalon attracts swimmers, runners, bicyclists, and enthusiastic spectators. Close by, there's the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Concours d'Elegance, the Pebble Beach Golf Courses, and so much more.

Our cottage is surrounded by natural beauty. You can walk, run, or bike along the beach. There’s also a beautifully manicured 9-hole public golf course for those who seek a quieter workout at considerably lower fees than those of more famous, nearby courses.

This is where John Steinbeck lived and earned his reputation as a writer of such novels as Grapes of Wrath, Cannery Row, and East of Eden. We are continually inspired by his creative work (we are both writers) and we hope you'll find the same guidance while you're here.

There's a lovely Farmer's Market on Mondays from 4pm to 7pm where you'll find delicious local produce, nuts, and fresh baked bread. it’s only 4 blocks away

We’re on a quiet one-way street. Please be sure not to block our neighbors' driveways. When arriving late into the evening, please note that the houses are very close together so our neighbors appreciate your keeping noise (including car doors) to a minimum.

The local shuttle runs along Lighthouse (half block away), and you can take it all the way to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Cannery, the Monterey Hotel (or you can walk the Bay trail, sharing it with bicyclists, families with kids in strollers, and folks walking their dogs).

The cottage is free standing, so you share no walls with anyone else. We're only a text message or phone call away, so please don't hesitate to contact us.

Guests are welcome to use the washer and dryer. We provide guests with a password for our WiFi network so you can stream movies on your laptop. There is no television but there are plenty of beaches, tide pools and otters along the shore and jellyfish as the Monterey Bay Aquarium to keep you busy. The loft is for owner's use only.

This tasteful cottage is located in the coveted Beach Tract neighborhood of Pacific Grove - 1 block from the ocean, 1 mile to Pacific Grove’s downtown, 1.5 miles to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and 2.5 miles to 17-Mile Drive and Pebble Beach.

The space
The 900 square foot home has two bedrooms, each bedroom furnished with Casper mattresses. There is one full bathroom that includes apartment-sized washer and dryer. The family room has a peek-a-view of the ocean as well as a gas fireplace. The sunroom includes an office space furnished with a corner desk and an adjustable office chair. The family room and master bedroom have SmartTVs but NO cable; guests may log into their personal streaming accounts. The kitchen is outfitted with everything you’ll need to make a favorite meal and enjoy a morning coffee, but does NOT have a dishwasher or garbage disposal.

We welcome guests of all ages; however, the home is not baby/toddler proofed (i.e., NO latches on cabinet doors or furniture, NO electrical socket coverings or table corner coverings, etc.). The yard is not fenced. We are certainly happy to supply a high chair and/or pack and play with sheets upon request. The kitchen is supplied with child safe dishes.

Due to severe allergies and asthma in our own family, we cannot accommodate pets. Therefore, NO pets are allowed on the property. Please respect this limitation for the safety of my family.

Guest will have access to the entire home and parking spaces in the driveway, but will NOT have access to the garage and one hall closet.

Guests have NO access to the mailbox.

This unique home is perfectly suited for two couples or a family that wants privacy but also to be in a cozy spot together. Meet in the main cottage kitchen to share a meal and relax, or retreat to your private spaces for quiet time.


MASTER BEDROOM, MAIN COTTAGE
Dream of marine mammals on a solid wood, four poster Cal king bed with foam mattress. There's a vintage wardrobe with drawers and hanging space for your clothing. There's also a writing desk where you can be inspired by the likes of Steinbeck and Twain. There's also a white, vintage-look log stove to keep you extra toasty at night.

KITCHEN, MAIN COTTAGE
The kitchen is newly redone in vintage style charm: new 4-burner stove + oven (apartment-size), new dishwasher, refrigerator and lots of new butcher block countertop space for prep. We have a coffee maker that also boils water, toaster and lots of pots and pans for cooking.

LIVING ROOM, MAIN COTTAGE
There's a love seat and pub chair with foot stool to relax in around the flat screen TV. The vintage chest has extra blankets and cushions for your comfort. The gas heater here keeps the main cottage toasty. You will hear ticking and the fan, as it comes on to circulate air throughout.

BATHROOM, MAIN COTTAGE
The bathroom has a small tub with shower and new, modern fixtures with vintage charm.

LAUNDRY ROOM, MAIN COTTAGE
There's a new high-efficiency washer and gas dryer.


COURTYARD
One of the best features of our PG home is the large courtyard that lies between the two cottages. We have a lounge set and gas fire pit. We also have a pergola with custom redwood dining table.

At the front of the main cottage there's a charcoal grill and another patio table and two chairs for relaxing.

The 100-year-old Coast Live Oak tree has a swing in it that the kids love to play on. And we have our signature, three majestic Canary date palm trees. The yard is fully fenced, but please keep your pet inside and crated when you're not at home, as the city issues noise citations for barking dogs.

We allow a well-behaved and crated dog with prior approval.

This rustic cottage is a block from the town grocery store, and a few houses away from cottages converted into restaurants and bakeries.

Near Lover's Point beach.

The space
Lots of windows make this two bedroom rustic cottage bright and cozy at the same time. This corner property is located in the commercial district where many of the Victorian homes have been converted into cafes and coffee shops.

A few block walk to the beach at Lover's Point. Walkable (1 mile) to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

One bedroom has a door for privacy and the other bedroom uses curtains in lieu of a door. There is a bonus room that has a daybed and a curtain instead of a door.

The bathroom is between the two bedrooms. If someone is using the daybed in the bonus room, they have to cross through one of the two bedrooms to enter the bathroom.

The kitchen is small/basic with a small stove/oven, a microwave and a medium-sized refrigerator.

There is no television/cable.

You have access to the entire house. A small fenced yard surrounds the cottage. There is no driveway - parking is free on the street but restricted on one side to three hours during business hours/weekdays. There is no television.

Other things to note
There is a youth center about 150 feet away and has occasional muffled playground noise. It is the cheerful sound of older children playing, not squealing toddlers. Parking on 17th is restricted to 3 hours during day time hours -- unrestricted at night. You are on the corner of Laurel, which has plenty of parking. You are very near the clock tower at City Hall and it chimes every 15" during the day with holiday songs chimed during December (non-religious songs). We find it delightful.
