Things to note.....
- we have a MAXIMIUM STAY of 8 nights
- In our compact but fully amended bathroom, the toilet is in the shower for space saving reasons.
- we are a studio cottage with one queen sized bed
- Unfortunately, due to California's historic drought, we no longer offer laundry services but there is a clean and well-appointed laundromat just a 10-minute walk away.
- We offer onsite parking. Please let us know in advance if you will need to park.
The island of Alameda is considered by some as the hidden gem of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Your hosts have turned their circa 1890s detached carriage house and stable into a welcoming garden getaway. This tastefully appointed guest spot is perfect for a quiet escape or extended academic or corporate visit.
Nestled in a quiet neighborhood, you are just walking distance from Park Street, Alameda's central shopping district. Here you'll find everything you need....antique shops, cafes, restaurants, boutiques and the newly renovated Alameda Theatre. Less than a mile away you'll find a pristine beach park with stunning views of the San Francisco skyline.
Want to head into 'The City'? You are just 25 minutes away from all SF has to offer. We are close to the Alameda ferry, AC Transit and BART. A quick drive over the Bay Bridge drops you right into the heart of downtown San Francisco.
The owners have spent decades collecting antiques and designing interiors and have used their talents to create a comfortable, quiet vacation space for those who appreciate a green way of living.
Virtually every item, from floor to ceiling is recovered or recycled in some way.
The Garden: The bungalow is covered by a gorgeous and legendary Wisteria tree that is the star of the spring season.
The practice of 'Living Green' extends to the lush surrounding gardens. Old San Francisco cobblestones, recovered copper downspouts and perfectly placed architectural elements create a serene garden so creative you'd think you were on a movie set.
A Koi pond that is sometimes visited by elegant egrets, sits just outside the bungalow door. The garden is surrounded by three small aviaries that house small families of canaries. Their song and the sound of flowing water will lull you while you read a book in the sun on your own private patio.
The Neighborhood & Beyond: Developed in the late 1800s as a beach resort community, the modern day version still holds much of it's charm from the early 20th century.
Take a drive through the different neighborhoods and you'll see beautiful examples of California architecture. Perfectly restored Victorians share the same street with cute California Bungalows and Craftsman style homes.
- "The property is completely unique and so comfortable. They have thought of everything and the garden area is so serene. It is walking distance to many of the local restaurants , parks and shops. The neighborhood is lovely with so many beautiful Victorian homes. We took the ferry to San Francisco and it was so much easier than driving and parking downtown. Highly recommend Wisteria, we will stay again next time we come to The bay area." - "The hosts are amazing people; the amazing garden they have built over time and their reverence for nature (and the planet) was refreshing, as was the thoughtful & elegant cottage itself. The attention to detail and comfort is equal to the design & exquisite aesthetic of a virtuous and personalized Arts & Crafts exterior and interior. Delightful in every way."

Some of our earliest guests dubbed our place "The Sanctuary", and we had to agree, it fit well. A truly special retreat-like setting. This is a very private cottage at street level with ample neighborhood parking. One enters through a private, sculpture filled courtyard. In the high ceilinged main room large windows look onto a red plum tree and hills in the distance. The super comfortable bed has down pillows and comforter and fine linens. A beautiful Travertine and plaster gas fireplace with a large Sculpture niche warms the room quickly and casts a romantic glow . Totally controllable lighting and top down- bottom up shades allow you to tailor the space to your exact needs . There is a built in desk and comfortable chair for working and a TV above it with cable, HBO, Showtime etc . There is a Bluetooth/CD player with a varied selection of cds Including my own home made cd of Indian bansuri music . Throughout the space there are thoughtful loving touches. The bathroom is unique and artistic with a large openable skylight. Though we are new to VRBO We have rented this space for more than ten years, and received many wonderful reviews which describe the place better than I ever could.
My favorite, from Annmarie and Vicky, December 31, 2018, " If I was a cat , I was purring the whole time. thank you for your creativity in bringing this space together."
From Thomas and Maya (NY),11 /27/20,

"Thanks for putting so much love in every detail in your tree top sanctuary. It was a perfect home away from home for my birthday trip home to the Bay Area. The stonework and mosaics are divine and you can feel the spirit within we will be back again."

Oh I forgot the flute music is awesome we listened to it every day

Heidi who has a definite flair for the poetic wrote, in September 2014," A traveler sanctuary indeed! for we are all travelers going somewhere. We, the nomads of the world at some point need to stop, breathe, look inside at our own inner strength, that which supports us like a forest of ancient redwoods. Ted and stefanie have created such a Sanctuary infusing beauty with such a vital calm and peaceful oasis, thank you.
In 2013 August -Jim and Phyllis wrote, "Best pillows ever, comfy bed, love the toilet paper holder, beautiful stonework throughout, best bathroom clock ever, quiet and serene. "

Last ,but certainly not least - from our one guest who proposed to his wife at our place,

Just one more written in lovely calligraphy, from Laurie and Dale, from Ohio and Florida respectively, "Thank you for providing peace and tranquility and comfort we loved your space. It was magical."
We look forward to sharing our magical, peaceful, comfortable space with you in the near future.
- "I live in a very noisy area of Oakland. The days leading up to July 4th every year are rough, to say the least. So I'm always looking for solace and quiet that time of year. One my dogs is the same way, so Ted allowed me to bring her with me just for a few hours for a few evenings. All she and I did was lounge, breathe, and enjoy the silence. What beauty. And the neighborhood!! Oh my, what a joy. Walking with her, I was overwhelmed with joy and surprise, which is exactly how we felt inside "the sanctuary." Thank you for feeding my soul (and my dog's soul!) for a short time, and for providing this wonderful escape from reality. I'll be back next year. With gratitude."

Located close to SF, the Montclair shopping district, Chabot Space Center, the Redwoods of Joaquin Miller Park, Oakland Zoo, any many other wonderful attractions (check out Canyon). The cottage is a cozy 850 sq. ft. There is WiFi and NO TV, a comfortable Queen Bed and a small work area if needed. The kitchen is hopefully equipped with everything you'll need and the pantry has misc. food items for your use. We live in the home right next door if anything additional is needed or if you have any questions regarding your stay. Recommendations are freely given! You'll enjoy your morning coffee on the deck as a peaceful way to start your day!
- "Comfortable and spacious cottage, perfect for us during our visit to family nearby. Quiet location. Comfortable bed. Well equipped kitchen. The owner was very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our stay." - "I stayed in Oakland for work, and wanted a day to just explore the city. I stayed at Tom's place and it was great. The house itself is very cute, and had all that i needed. I was able to get in and out of the house with ease, and the garden and the chickens on the property were a lovely part of the experience as well. The neighborhood is very nice, with absolutely stunning gardens! I walked to a nearby coffee shop (Mokha ~ *highly* recommend!) and had a delightful time looking at all of the plantings. The only issue was that sometimes the Uber/Lyft drivers really struggled to get out of the one way street that the house was on. But that is not anything to do with the house or the host. I would recommend this place for sure!"

This space has a total of 250 sqft interior space.

The space
This VRBO consists of two combined spaces: a rustic cabin and an attached studio, both steps away from each other and situated amidst the native plant garden, offering the perfect combination of old-world charm and contemporary amenities.
Please note that our cottage and studio are located on the back of our main property where we reside. While we live on-site, your accommodations are completely private with their own dedicated entrance and separate living spaces (the cabin and studio are distinct units, steps apart, exclusively for your use).
The Cabin:
Step into a hand-built haven crafted with love and dedication, featuring natural wood finishes and reclaimed wooden accents throughout. The cabin has a 12x10' layout with a very high ceiling, to open upwards into a loft. This super-cozy, rustic cabin comfortably sleeps two in a quaint, antique double bed, offering breathtaking views right from under the covers. Ascend to the loft, a perfect spot to relax in the comfortable lounger and soak in even more stunning vistas. The loft can also be converted into an additional sleeping space with the futon sofa. A dedicated table provides a workspace for those who need to stay connected, while large windows bathe the cabin in natural light, maximizing the breathtaking views. A large glass sliding door seamlessly connects the indoor and outdoor spaces, opening directly onto the vibrant native plant garden.
The Studio:
Just steps from the cabin, the simple one-room studio with attached full private bath provides all the comforts of home. Relax in the queen-size bed and refresh in the full private bathroom. Enjoy modern amenities like a large internet TV and an electronic piano for your entertainment. A unique selection of snacks and drinks is also available for your convenience. This combined space offers a one-of-a-kind experience, blending the rustic charm of the hand-built cabin with the modern convenience of the studio. Perfect for those seeking a unique and memorable getaway that features breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay.
Relaxing in the Hot Tub
Our hot tub is one of our favorite spots, and we'd love for you to enjoy it!
1. Heating It Up: To make sure it's perfectly heated for you, please give us at least 24 hours notice if you'd like to use the hot tub. This gives the water enough time to get nice and warm. Just send us a quick message through the app!
2. Using the Cover: We keep the cover on to keep out leaves and keep the heat in. It can be a little bulky! The easiest way to remove it is to un-clip the front clips and place it vertical against the studio wall. You can place it anywhere on rocks or tiled area near the cabin while you're using the tub. If you need a hand with it, just ask!
3. Quiet Hours: To respect our neighbors (and your fellow guests, if any!), please observe quiet hours between 9 PM and 8 AM. This means no hot tub soaks during these times.
4. A Note on the Water: We use natural tap water and a small amount (50-100 ppm) of hydrogen peroxide to keep the water sanitized. We choose hydrogen peroxide over chlorine because it's a gentler, more environmentally friendly option that allows us to reuse the water later for our garden plants! Since the hot tub is nestled amongst the trees, you might notice a tiny leaf or twig sometimes, but rest assured, the water sanitation is top-notch.
Guest access
Enjoy seamless access to your private suite with a key code lock upon arrival. A dedicated parking spot is available for your convenience. Please note that there are 4-5 steps leading up to the back of the house and the suite entrance. Step directly from your studio into the native plant garden, complete with a handmade concrete table and various other seating areas offering stunning Bay views. This suite is not specifically designed for wheelchair accessibility. Detailed check-in instructions, including the key code, will be provided upon booking. Other things to note Our cabin plus studio is designed to be cozy and comfortable for groups of 4. It features a queen size bed in the studio and a full size bed in the cabin. For groups larger than 4, the loft serves as a dedicated sleeping area (please see photos of the sun room), and the futon conveniently folds down into a bed. This setup provides flexible sleeping arrangements for everyone in your group. Our garden is a living space that changes with the seasons. We are continuously working to improve and enhance it, so the garden you experience during your stay may look slightly different from the photos, with new plants growing and evolving throughout the year.

This marvelous studio cottage in Oakland is the perfect cozy retreat for guests. With a comfortable queen bed and a convenient sofa bed, this adorable space is ideal for a relaxing stay, for up to 3 people, although it works best with 2 adults and a child (or of course 1 person). Enjoy the wonderful amenities provided, including a hair dryer, iron, WiFi, and heating. The bathroom features a bathtub/shower. Writers, academics, grandparents, executives and vacationers have enjoyed staying here since 2014.
I have always welcomed long stays, so if you need to stay a number of weeks or months, I am happy to accommodate you.
The cottage is fully furnished, including bedding, towels, & fully equipped kitchen. The kitchen has a 2 burner gas stovetop, a combination microwave/convection oven, toaster oven, drip coffee maker, and a full size refrigerator. The queen bed sits on a platform with 6 drawers on each side and 2 long storage drawers that open at the bottom of the platform. Windows on all walls and double sliding doors create a light filled, peaceful, spacious abode. The heater will warm up the cottage in a few minutes on cold days and on warm days, just open the windows and the door. Fan also included behind the bed. There are 2 laundromats within a couple of blocks.
I have lived in the main house since 1987, raised my daughter here, and created a second home for her three children. I love my neighborhood and love sharing it with travelers.
Walk 25 minutes to College Avenue's Elmwood district for a movie theatre, terrific cafes and restaurants, Wells Fargo Bank, bakeries, ice cream shop and much more. Or walk more to the south on College Avenue to enter the Rockridge district for tons of shops and eateries and the Rockridge BART station. Just a couple of blocks away on Adeline Street and Alcatraz Avenue are good eateries, a Yoga studio and a few shops. The Berkeley border is just one block north and one block west. If you enjoy walking, I heartily encourage you take walks around the neighborhoods to view a wide variety of beautiful old homes, varied architecture and landscaping.
UC Berkeley campus is a short BART or bus ride or about a 45 minute walk. All within easy walking distance are libraries, two post offices, Berkeley Bowl grocery, Whole Foods, yoga and Pilates studios, museums, BART, bus lines, Berkeley's art district with theatres, live performance venues and many places to eat. Oakland and Berkeley offer a wide variety of music, theatre, and arts. Two of my favorite venues are Zellerbach Auditorium on the UC Berkeley campus and just a few blocks away are Freight and Salvage, Berkeley Repertory and the Roda Theatre. A few blocks from my place is our local theatre, The Ashby Stage/Shotgun Players. You will always be able to stay entertained while here. And did I mention the dozens of local hiking trails?
If you are arriving with a car, I can offer you one free off street parking spot in my fenced driveway. Or you can park on the street but you will need a visitor parking permit if your car will be parked for more that 2 hours between 8am to 6pm Monday through Friday. A little bit about me. I owned a wholesale bakery in Richmond for 35 years called Zoe's Cookies and Other Delights. I retired in January of 2017 and my income source now comes from my cottage rental and 2 bedrooms in the main house. I have one daughter who has blessed me with three grandchildren who currently (2025) are 16, 18, and 19. I love to garden as you will see from the photos and one of my favorite activities is to just get outside and walk which I sometimes do for hours. I really enjoy sharing my home and meeting people I would never meet otherwise.
So please come stay in my lovely cottage. I promise you a wonderful visit. And if you're lucky, I'll be baking something delicious from my Zoe's Cookies recipe files to satisfy any sweet tooth.
I will do my very best to answer your questions.
- "Beautiful cottage in a beautiful neighborhood. Close to BART and quick access to the freeways. We will be coming back." - "Zoe’s cottage was the perfect spot for my work trip - quiet, with off-street parking and a lovely garden. The full kitchen and comfortable bed were highlights. Thank you, Zoe! Would stay again." - "Sleeped like a baby on a high bed. shower was great pressure wise.easy access." - "Overall my family is happy about the stay. One suggestion, the three-in-one shower gel may need to be changed to suit different needs for the hair and for the body. "

- "This was the perfect place for my husband and I for our 2 week stay in Berkeley. We were coming for some training and did not want to stay in the hotel as we valued having a kitchen and some more space. This was actually cheaper than the hotel and way better in my opinion." - "The property is clean, uncluttered, very attractive and very quiet. The hosts are non-intrusive but very helpful if help is requested. A great stay.." - "If you or someone you know are looking for a rental VRBO in Berkeley this listing is the perfect place. The location is great with grocery stores and fantastic restaurants within a few blocks, North Berkeley BART a brief walk, and the Ohlone Greenway just one block away. The property is so clean and there are brand new appliances including dishwasher, oven, stove, microwave, and fridge. Also, you have your own laundry (washer/dryer combo) which I used so much it was amazing. I stayed here for two months and got to know the owners and their family just by passing by and they are so wonderful and welcoming! I could not give a higher appraisal for this listing it came at a time when I needed a speedy booking so I randomly clicked on this one. Turns out, it was the best place I've stayed in the Bay Area so far. The owners are very responsive if you need anything done and let you have your own space which is amazing. For example, they have a Keurig in the unit for you to use and I was having a hard time getting it to work. I messaged the owner and he came over that same day and fixed it for me. Overall, I give this listing a 5/5 as it included all of the basics I needed plus laundry, dishwasher, cleanliness, privacy, accommodations for me and my dog, and very nice owners. I'm for sure going to recommend it to anyone I know who needs a quick rental booking in Berkeley. I'd book fast because this place will go fast whenever available!"

Romantic and charming, this100 year old cottage was built by a retired sea captain who wanted views of the ocean. The primary bedroom with its floor-to-ceiling windows, fireplace and spectacular views is a beautiful place to lounge and an inspirational setting to work. The grounds and dining areas have panoramic views and the whole compound sits on top of two million year old healing Franciscan Chert (rock). Quality linens and natural bath products add to your experience in this historic abode.
- "As others have commented, the grounds and views of this property are truly stunning. And it is so quiet up on this hill! The cottage itself is cute, quirky and fun, with the main bedroom being the highlight as it affords incredible views and a truly resplendent bed that was perhaps the most comfortable we've ever slept in. Hosts are great and the neighborhood was also a pleasant surprise, with a nice market and many restaurants just a short drive away. Hope to return!"

Washed clothes just fine. Vehicle parking on street or at public lot nearby. Very nice place and I’d stay again!"
