Set in a lush private garden, the cottage has preserved its charming architectural detail behind sophisticated and comfortable furnishings.

The living room/dining room area is entered through a dutch door from the covered loggia which runs the length of the cottage. The ceiling is vaulted with beams. A fireplace and built-in bookshelf anchor one end of the room.

There is a couch which can convert into a queen bed with excellent mattress to sleep up to 2 additional persons. The dining table is set in the recessed front window bay and converts from intimate seating for two to double sized to seat 4.

WiFi is available through out the cottage. The Living Room has a 40' Samsung smart TV with cable and soundbar mounted above additional shelving and storage. The living room lamps provide good light for reading - up to 150 watts as the owner hates bad lighting!

The large bedroom also has a vaulted ceiling with sky lights and sleeps 2 in a Queen-sized bed. Linens are provided for both this bed as well as the one in the living room if used. There is a set of French doors opening out onto the loggia which features a bistro table and two chairs. A cozy loft space above the bed is a perfect reading alcove - and also storage for suitcases, etc.

The bathroom has a spacious shower, sink and toilet and is off the hallway connecting the living room and bedroom, providing separation of the living and sleeping spaces. Towels and a hairdryer are provided.

The fully-equipped kitchen has an electric stove, frost-free refrigerator, microwave, Keurig K-cup coffee maker. A stainless steel chef's table can provide additional prep space or with a stool, a breakfast dining area or seating to enjoy a glass of wine while talking to the cook!

The cottage is heated by a thermostatically controlled gas-fired wall heater in the living room. Two Dyson Hot+Cold portable fans are provided for extra cooling as needed.

Outside the kitchen is a utility area where trash and recycling bins are located. There is also a full-sized Weber gas barbecue for use of cottage guests.

Connected to the loggia is a sunny brick patio with a private entry from the parking area, which is available at an additional charge of $50 per week for renter's use. Street parking is limited to 3 hours between 9 and 6 daily except Sundays. Due to the location of the cottage less than a mile from Rockridge BART, a car is not needed to explore Berkeley and San Francisco, but parking is there if you have one.

The garden provides enjoyable private outdoor spaces for both owner and renter in Berkeley's pleasant climate. I hope you will enjoy the outdoor 'rooms' connected with the cottage as much as you will its indoor rooms.

The Space:

The cottage is set back from the street, behind a majestic old house built in 1907. Stylishly furnished and decorated with vaulted ceilings, many windows – including greenhouse windows in the kitchen and bathroom – skylight, etched glass mirrors, hardwood floors, granite and marble tile in the bathroom, and indirect mood lighting. It’s small-ish (400 sq ft) and charming, with efficient use of space – for example, storage drawers underneath the bed and recessed shelving. Internet/wi-fi is included. On-site laundry facilities are a few steps away. One off-street parking space is available right outside the entrance.

The living room has a comfortable sofa, coffee table and flat-screen TV. The eat-in kitchen is full of light and includes a dishwasher, microwave, all cooking equipment, dishes, glasses and utensils. The bedroom has a queen-size bed; all bedding is included. The bathroom has a full-size tub, over-the-tub shower, classic white Carrera marble tile walls, and even granite artwork in the floor.

The Neighborhood:

The apartment is in the Elmwood residential district, 1 block from Telegraph Avenue and 2 blocks from College Avenue. The UC Berkeley campus is a 10-12 minute walk (5 blocks).

It’s close to numerous ethnic and specialty restaurants (Italian, Indian, Ethiopian, French, Japanese, burgers, pizza, Swiss-style fondue, Thai, Chinese, Korean barbecue, a Subway), coffee houses, bookstores, vintage clothing stores, music stores, and student hangouts on Telegraph Avenue. A large CVS pharmacy is a block away and Whole Foods is 4 minutes by car or a 12 minute walk (5 blocks).

Alta Bates Berkeley Hospital is a 10-minute walk.

Access:

There are buses on Telegraph or College Avenues to downtown Berkeley, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit system), Oakland and San Francisco. The Claremont Hotel & Conference Center is just over a mile away. There is freeway access either at Telegraph Avenue & 55th Street (about 2 miles) or Ashby Avenue (about 3 miles) where you can drive to San Francisco, Oakland, Marin County & the Golden Gate Bridge, Napa Valley, and Lake Tahoe. Twenty minutes driving (outside rush hours!) will take you to San Francisco across the Bay Bridge, or if you take BART from the downtown Berkeley station, it’s about a 20 minute ride to SF.

Interaction:

Our delightful and energetic managers Binyam and Bruk (originally from Ethiopia) know this property well; they used to live in the cottage, and Binyam did all the renovation work. Now they live in an apartment in the converted large house at the front of the property. They are very knowledgeable about the neighborhood and will be very accessible during your stay to answer any questions. But you will have the place to yourself and won’t be disturbed.

Guests have full access to the cottage and its private garden.

There is shared access to the driveway (shared with neighbors) and parking for one guest car that must be small or a compact SUV, otherwise it will not fit.

There is no TV or stereo system in the cottage.

SAFETY: The cottage is not well set up for children to play, and young children must always be supervised at all times by an adult due to steep stairs and low balcony railings.

The stairs leading to the lofts are narrow and steep and may be difficult to negotiate for children or adults with limited mobility.

There is a balcony outside one of the lofts that has a low railing and is off limits. Small children should be supervised in case they get curious and find the way out and onto it.

Located just steps from Cal campus and hiking trails, this architectural gem boasts one of the best views in Berkeley including not only the city but the bay, Golden Gate Bridge, and the far hills of Marin. The International house dome and the spire of the Campanile lend an exotic air and if you squint you might swear you're in Santorini.

The space
A perfect nest for a visiting professor, the home was designed and built by Julia Morgan's head engineer. Inspired by a combination of Mediterranean and Arts and Crafts traditions, it is part of Walter Steilberg's former estate, sitting behind the main house he built for himself and his family in 1922.

It is private, preserved and updated even though the house feels like you've stepped into another era. It is on the National Historic Register for its pioneering use of poured concrete.

There is a two week minimum stay required.
