Situated in the heart of the Adelaide Hills, Thiele House Retreat is a secluded 3 to 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom short stay escape, sleeping up to 10 people comfortably (4 people in partial house option).
We offer a chilled bottle of wine on arrival along with a sweet snack. We have a beautiful courtyard with a table that seats 12 to 14 persons and the interior table seats 8 persons. We also have large lawned gardens by the creek.
The house has two wood burning fires with wood and kindling supplied and a Piano in the front lounge room. Thiele House has 2 bedrooms downstairs with king-size beds and access to ensuite - and 2 bedrooms upstairs - one has a king size double bed and the other bedroom has a double queen size bed and 2 single beds which is ideal to accommodate an extra 1 to 4 persons. NOTE - Access to the second bedroom is through the other upstairs bedroom. Children under 3 years of age using cots - Free of charge. 1 Cot and 1 High Chair Supplied.

Thiele House Retreat is located on the outskirts of the Main Street of Hahndorf, the oldest surviving German settlement and just 20 minutes from the CBD of Adelaide, via the freeway. Australia's best wineries and cellar doors neighbour The Retreat with the likes of The Lane Vineyard, Sidewood Estate, Sam Scott Wines, Hahndorf Hill Winery, Nepenthe, Somerled, Shaw & Smith and many more, just minutes away from the Hahndorf Township, whilst taking time to relax and recharge.

The property has 5 buildings on site, The front property is leased to Bracegirdles which is a chocolate house offering the best coffee in Hahndorf as well as a large range of chocolates and food.
We also have a cellar door, La Prova Wines. The old barn is The Blacksmiths Cafe and the double story building is an info-tec company. The accommodation is another separate building and was our old home, we now live in the office/apartment above the garages which is also a separate building. We state that we live on-site to discourage the property being used by those wishing to use accommodation for large parties, leaving the premises in a trashed state. All buildings are of stone construction, the oldest being built for the first couple of Germanic ancestory to be married in Australia. We are in the Main Street but the accommodation is 100 metres down the driveway, very quiet and private. All our guests appreciate the tranquility and proximity to the Hahndorf township and I'm sure you would also do so - unless of course, you are planning a wild rave party!! If so - our place is not for you.

It is a spacious 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, self-contained single level town house only 20 metres from the main street but nestled in a quiet, tranquil area with your own backyard, free on-site parking and private entrance.

It's a smart Shed and it's Red...set on 14 acres in Hahndorf, nestled in the Adelaide Hills. It is quite private with a lovely view. It sleeps 5 comfortably, with 2 queen beds in separate rooms, and 1 king single in the play area. Quaint & cosy inside.

The space
Although we are marketing our space as The Red Shed, it is very comfortable and pleasant inside and not "shed like" at all. It has a stunning view over the property, with horses roaming in the paddocks nearby. There are also 7 donkeys, chooks, goats and dogs - it really is a farm experience.

Inside our Red Shed, is a large bathroom, lounge, two bedrooms, one main (queen bed) and one smaller room (queen bed). There is a small room which can be used as a second lounge space or children's area. This space has a king single bed in it.

Couple of things to Note:

I would like to note here that we have a small unfenced dam, approximately 200m out of sight of the accommodation but if you bring small children you need to be aware of this. It is only thigh high and pretty much empty most summers.


Also, please be aware that the Adelaide Hills region is in a bushfire risk area. While our property is adjacent to the safer place of Hahndorf, I do have a bushfire survival plan. There is a copy in the top drawer of the sideboard in the kitchen. If the fire danger rating is CATASTROPHIC on the day of your checkin, I will phone you to discuss the implications of this, which is to ask you to check in later in the afternoon or early evening. If this rating is reached during your stay, I will make time to discuss your plans with you. Our priority is to keep everyone as informed and as safe as possible.

Guests have the whole studio, their own private outdoor patio area, and access to the beauty of the property itself!

Parking is right outside the door so unpacking the car is not a problem.

WiFi - Unfortunately it is not available, it is apparently the tin of the shed which causes the issues of access. If you bring your own wi-fi / hotspot there is no problem.

Other things to note
The Adelaide Hills region, while only being 25km from the city centre offers a charmed world of its own. The countryside is storybook-pretty. It is dappled in light, dotted with quaint villages and bustling towns.

Use the Adelaide Hills as a base for more touring. Adelaide, the Barossa and the Fleurieu Peninsula are all within an hour’s drive. Just get in the car and see where you end up....it will be somewhere special!

Featuring exposed beams, wood stove and leather couch. Upstairs a queen bed and daybed with a trundle. There is a brand new kitchen and a dining area, all within a 5 minute walk of Main Street with its abundance of restaurants and cafes.
The wineries of the Adelaide Hills are just around the corner and McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley are an easy drive . Great for solo travellers, couples and families with small children. You can walk to the Adelaide Hills Convention Centre too.

The space
Its a two level barn with the charm of yesteryear designed with today's contemporary industrial chic. Its a separate building to the main house so you have absolute privacy.
Reverse cycle air conditioning on both levels and a wood burner down stairs make sure you'll be comfortable year round.

You have your own kitchen with hotplates, a microwave and a full size fridge. There's a dining table inside and the outdoor area has a large table for those great summer afternoons.

Other things to note
Upstairs you have a queen bed and a daybed with a trundle, they are all in the same room. If you require sleeping areas to be separated for privacy or need more beds please look at the Charming Farmhouse Suite for Two.
We have a stair gate and high chair for kids and a portacot for a baby if required.
Firewood is provided for the wood burning heater (slow combustion heater) and there's a reverse cycle air conditioner (heat pump) for each level. A 50" Smart TV with Netflix and wifi access to the NBN internet complete the picture.
All other essentials for your stay are also provided, including bathroom essentials, towels, linen, iron and hairdryer.
The bathroom is newly renovated with a large bath and large walk in shower.
We have a clothes washer and drier available for guest use in the main house.
While we don't charge for infants under two our insurance company charges annually on a maximum occupancy basis so infants count toward the maximum number of guests which is 4.

Our 2 bedroom loft is part of the Hahndorf Motel located in the heart of historic Hahndorf. It is a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, self contained apartment perfect for wedding groups, family reunions or a weekend escape. On the main street but set back from the road for your tranquility, this loft offers you all the amenities that you find at home. It sleeps up to 4 people. Its central location makes it an ideal place to stay and enjoy the beautiful Adelaide Hills attractions.

We have recently taken ownership of this gorgeous Hahndorf house with apartment, which is open-plan and has an ensuite bathroom. It has wooden floors, windows all around, and a veranda for a lovely morning coffee or perhaps an evening drink. The elevated position makes the apartment feel like a hotel in a garden! You have your own kitchen with dining table and lounge area with TV that has Netflix and a comfy lounge, the additional day bed, turns into two singles, allowing up to four guests. You have everything you need for a cosy weekend away!

Guests can use the entire upstairs studio space and the driveway to park one vehicle. There is street parking if there is a second vehicle.

Frieden (Peace in German) Lodge sits on over 1000 square metres of land, divided into four separate garden spaces, each with unique aspects.

A bit of History.
The original allotment of land this property was part of included the properties of Numbers. 1, 2, and 3 on Male Cresent.

This allotment's earliest records date back to 1839.
It wasn't until 1967 that Trevor Schneemilch, a log cutter in Hahndorf, sold a portion of the farm to form Lot 1 Male Crescent. This eventually split into the three land titles.

From 1967 to 1970, the House of Frieden Lodge was bought and transported to 2 Male Crescent.

Its original location was on a farm in Mount Barker, where it was used as a Shearers' quarters. It was then also used as a workers' quarters for farm hands on 2 Male Crescent.

A free private uncovered parking space is provided off street at the rear of the building. Please do not park on the street as you will likely receive a parking ticket.

The best way of seeing Hahndorf is by foot.

There are bus stops in the main street (2 minutes walk) that will take you to Adelaide and other Hills towns including Mt Barker, Stirling etc. Please see the Adelaide Metro website for details.

The space

The space
Our place is an early 1900's stone bungalow that was originally the dairyman's cottage of a local farm. The home has been extended over the years, and renovated in 2019 to meet the expectations of 21st century visitors. The Haus is set in it's garden in an elevated position with great street appeal, and just a short stroll to the centre of this famous town.

Our place consists of:

- 5 large bedrooms with queen beds and Egyptian cotton linen
- 3.5 bathrooms (3 showers, 1 bath, 1 en-suite powder room)
- 2 top quality portable beds for locating wherever you require (by request)
- Huge open-plan family room with top quality furnishings

The Haus is great for large families visiting the Hills. The bedrooms are separate from the entertaining space providing peace and quiet for those needing their own space. The elevated verandah is a great spot for sundowners.

Please note: Hills gardens are usually at their best in spring and early summer, fading during summer and autumn in line with the seasons.

Guest access
The home consists of 5 beds, 3.5 bathrooms, huge communal area, gardens and parking.

However, please be advised that booking fees are based on the total number of guests staying during the booking period (not the maximum no of guests staying on any one night). Guest substitution is not available at this property. We are unable to accept reservations for stag or hen parties.

The price assumes two guests per room. So 6 guests using 3 rooms, 8 guests using 4 rooms etc. Single occupancy bookings are very welcome, but there is a surcharge to cover the additional cost of servicing as follows:

- 5 or 6 guests using 5 rooms, $200 surcharge
- 7 or 8 guests using 5 rooms, $100 surcharge.

Please advise the host when making the booking. We appreciate your understanding.

A short stroll to Hahndorf eateries, bars, restaurants, galleries and specialty stores. Close to major wineries including The Lane (5 minutes drive, or taxi), Hahndorf Hill, Shaw & Smith etc. Hahndorf and the Adelaide Hills are particularly beautiful in spring and autumn.

Please note that while the inside of the Haus is renovated and ready for your stay, the external stonework of the old house and the overgrown gardens require TLC and will be work in progress for some time. This will in no way spoil your amenity and enjoyment of this great property in this famous town in the glorious Adelaide Hills.

There is a minimum stay of 3 nights due to the economics of servicing such a large property. For specific requirements please contact the host.

Children are welcome, but require supervision. The Haus contains high end furnishings and fabric. It is a condition of booking that children are supervised, any damage must be reported, and repair or replacement costs may be incurred.
