We invite you to enjoy the inspiring space of our modest, two bedroom mountain cabin nestled in the Rocky Mountains. The cabin is a short scenic drive west of Boulder, Colorado and only two miles from the quaint and colorful mountain town of Nederland, CO. Built in the early 1900's, our house was the baggage depot which serviced the historic, Switzerland Trail Railroad. The cabin sits at approximately 8600 ft is south facing, adorned with a lot of glass, great natural light and is passive solar. It is located off a county dirt road, providing easy winter access, situated in a lovely riparian valley, surrounded by Boulder County Open Space and the Roosevelt National Forest.

We remolded this historic cabin in the late 1990's, but not without first falling in love with the wonderful character and imperfections of this turn of the century structure. We purposely kept what we could, like the original hardwood floor, and took great care to salvage and recycle as much of the original, weathered materials, and then integrated them back into our home. Though 100 years old, our cabin offers the comfort of all the modern amenities, while preserving it's rustic charm in a uniquely, eclectic style. Reclaimed, hand hewn timbers accent the the cabin exterior, the master bedroom, and the one of a kind, rustic, hand poured bathroom. Hammered metal details and homemade doors add a wonderful, hand made touch throughout. Furnishings and decorations artistically blend textures from around the globe, as well as from local artisans, all of which enhance the uniqueness of your stay.

Our cabin is the ideal location for a romantic getaway, as well as a wonderful place to escape the summer heat or the hustle and bustle of the city. Relax and rejuvenate in the magic of our home and the clean Rocky Mountain air. Sit on your front porch while drinking your morning coffee. Soak in the sunshine viewing the native mountain wildflowers and listen to the melodic flowing stream along with the chirping chorus of the ubiquitous hummingbird and the song of the native mountain birds.

For the history buff, the valley in which our cabin sits, is steeped in mining history Our cabin specifically, is the gateway house before entering the New Cardinal historic mill site, which in its heyday, was one of the largest gold mines in the area. Across the road is a cute, well maintained cabin, that was the New Cardinal brothel, in the early 1900's. The remnants of the Switzerland Trail Railroad is only steps from your door, This, historic railroad grade offers a network of hiking, mountain biking and in the winter, cross country skiing trails right out your door. The extensive Nederland mountain biking trail systems are also accessed from your doorstep. Be at the Eldora Ski Resort, which offers downhill skiing, snowboarding and nordic skiing in only 10 minutes.

For the outdoor enthusiast, not only is there hiking, mountain bike riding and cross country skiing out your door, but just a few miles away in Boulder Canyon there is rock climbing, swimming, kayaking and fly fishing. The high alpine peaks of the Indian Peak Wilderness Area are easily accessed and only a short distance away. If you prefer a scenic mountain drive, or a spectacular road bike ride, the Peak to Peak Highway is two miles from our cabin, taking you to Rocky Mountain National Park to the north, or to the casinos of Black Hawk, and Central City to the south. The progressive town of Boulder itself is 17 miles down the canyon road, and offers a large variety of shopping, restaurants and the famous Pearl Street Mall.

We invite you to the historic & modest Happy Valley Lodge to experience a rustic/luxury stay in our newly renovated 100 yr old log cabin. Our cabin is the perfect place to base out of for many adventures, from back country skiing, snow shoeing, hiking & camping. Down hill ski, snowboard or ski the Nordic Track at the Eldora Mountain Resort, minutes from the cabin. In other seasons fly fish in Boulder Creek, just on the edge of the property, or stroll out your door & take in our scenic neighborhood. The popular Magnolia mountain bike trails are only a few miles from the cabin & the top of Boulder Canyon is a 10-15 minute drive and host to an extensive array of rock climbs and more fishing if desired.

The Happy Valley Lodge is also a great place to just relax, escape the summer heat and take in the beauty & wildness of your surroundings. National Forest surrounds Eldora's small community on all sides & it's not unusual to have moose, deer & foxes walking through the yard.

- Indian Peaks Wilderness Area is a 15 minute drive west. 76,000 acres of untamed wilderness. Access the Colorado back country up to and over the Continental Divide. No motor vehicles or bikes allowed, a true Rocky mountain experience! Winter access not for the faint of heart:) but rewarding to say the least.
- Mud Lake/Caribou Ranch Open Space trail systems are within walking distance. A wonderful system of loops and some of the most level trails you'll find in the Rockies. Enjoy hiking, biking, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Ice skating is allowed on Mud Lake. Wildlife is abundant, moose, elk, deer, and fox are all common sights to the attentive hiker. Get lucky and spy a bobcat, lynx, bear or mountain lion!

- RTD bus Park and Ride is 1/4 mile away. Access to Boulder, Denver and Eldora Mountain Resort!
It's a downhill, under 10 minute walk from the apt to town. You need not walk along the highway, there is a shortcut path by the SE corner of the Community Center parking lot. Plan a little longer time walking UPHILL from town or the RTD(bus lot) to the apt.
- The driveway is steep and during winter 4WD or AWD and snow tires are A MUST to make it up. That being said, it is south facing and snow/ice melts off quickly on sunny days. There is public parking across the highway at the Community Center and you can walk up and/or I can help shuttle your luggage up.
- We do our best to maintain the driveway and walkway free of snow and ice but it will be slippery at times. By making a reservation you accept risk of any/all personal injury or vehicle damage due to weather conditions.
- Take note; Winter can be windy. It's not unusual for sustained 50mph wind for an entire day. Snowstorms can be heavy. It's not unusual to get multiple feet in a day. Winter also has many calm, beautiful blue sky days, especially following a storm. Be prepared for any and all weather conditions!
- Altitude sickness affects some people. Drink LOTS of water! Take it easier than normal with physical activity and alcohol consumption. Canned oxygen is available in town at the B&F Market and other stores, it can really help ease symptoms!
- Dress warm, in layers during winter. Be prepared!

Built in 1945, this charming cabin blends historic mining-town character with modern comfort, featuring some original furnishings and an antique stove in the kitchen. Although small in square footage, the unique layout provides comfortable separation of space, with a cozy bedroom off the living room and a bright kitchen in the back of the house that opens onto the backyard.

There is a Queen CouchBed in the living room for extra guests, fast WiFi, and a 42" Smart TV for login to your streaming channels. And, if you need a workspace, there is a desk with a charging strip. The kitchen is stocked with the amenities that we hope will make your stay comfortable including basic cooking essentials (spices, sugar, oil, etc.), condiments, coffee, and tea. Bathroom amenities include linens, a hairdryer, shampoo, and conditioner.

Located on a quiet dead-end street with no thru traffic, the cabin also offers private off-street parking for two cars. The space
The Hobbit House is Located less than 2 blocks from the heart of Nederland offering restaurants, bars, communal office space/internet, library, bank, beautiful Barker Reservoir and loads of mountain character. Nederland is a funky town just 18 miles from Boulder, 45 minutes from Denver. Sitting at 8600ft above sea level, it is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park offering pristine hiking trails, lakes, white water rafting, kayaking, fishing, climbing, backcountry skiing, and more. Eldora Ski Resort is a quick 10 min. drive or bus ride away! The Hobbit House is a private cabin on our home property and shares a common outdoor courtyard, outdoor gas fire pit, and grill with the Hobbit House rental just adjacent. Includes all utilities and wifi. No pets.

Other things to note
We have fragile mountain plumbing. Please nothing down the toilet other than the RV toilet paper provided. Trap all food going down kitchen sink and dispose of in trashcan. No harsh chemicals like bleach, toilet bowl cleaner or Drain-o down the plumbing system.

Walk, bike, hike right outside our door! Downtown Nederland is just steps away. Shopping, Dining, hiking & biking trails, dispensaries, saloons, grocery stores, etc. all within short walking distance of the Cabin. The RTD bus depot is right around the corner, a very nice & convenient alternative to needing a rental vehicle.

While our cabin is located right in town, we are also tucked into a dead-end street, surrounded by quiet neighbors who are full time residents- its quiet!
We are also right next to the Historical Wolf Tongue Mine (no longer in operation) Witness some local history of our sweet little town, right outside our back door! We provide some cool books in our in-home book collection that share tons of nuggets of local history facts about the mine, Nederland, and more!

Nestled in one of the most beautiful locations in the Colorado Rocky mountains, this retreat suits writers, academics, and nature lovers, making a great base for hiking, backpacking, and skiing and a wonderful destination after a busy day in Boulder.

In the summer months, wildflowers abound. Those who are lucky, may see moose, bear, bobcat, and fox from the windows. The Hessie trail starts 1 mile up a dirt road from the house. The house is in a central location for a variety of front range climbing areas including Boulder Canyon which is ~10 minutes drive away.

In the winter, Eldora Mountain Resort nordic and Alpine ski centers are 5 miles up the road. When there is snow pack, you can back country ski, snow shoe, or play in the snow right out the front door. Oct-Dec guests: Please expect radical, unpredictable weather including freezing blowing wind, snow, ice, sun, and 50 degree temperature swings, that you can enjoy from the comfort of a warm home.

There is NO TV or STEREO, making the house a great choice for guests who are happy with wifi access only (Century Link with example download speeds between 14 and 28 mbps) or who are seeking a tech vacation.

My husband and I live on the property and are likely to be staying in the house next door (~100 yards away) when you are here. We are seeking quiet, respectful guests to share our slice of heaven with. We are happy to help in any way upon request and can offer day trip recommendations to sport climbers, hikers, and skiers.

Perched on a panoramic hillside above north Boulder creek, our house is a great place to relax and take in the beauty of the surrounding wilderness. It’s common to have deer, elk, moose and fox in our yard. Come enjoy complementary coffee or tea on our expensive deck overlooking Kiowa and Albion peaks which are both over 13,000 ft peaks. Hang out in the hammocks, jump on the trampoline, play corn hole and relax by the outside fire pit. With over 300 sunny days a year in Colorado you will have plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors. For the outdoor enthusiast incredible hiking and biking trails are easily accessible from the property. There is rock climbing in nearby Boulder canyon. Nederland skate park, Ice rink and tennis courts are minutes away. In the winter enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and/or cross country skiing at nearby Eldora Mountain Ski Resort or backcountry trails. We offer high speed internet and free WiFi. Our mountain retreat is perfect for any kind of mountain adventure! Our house is great for entertaining with an open floor plan. There is a wood burning stove and we supply firewood & kindling. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals. All 3 bedrooms are very spacious with incredible views. All bedrooms and the living room have hepa air purifiers.

You are welcome to bring your well behaved furry friends. We allow up to two dogs. There is an additional fee, $100 per stay

In mountain settings, yellow well water, particularly in spring, is often due to iron oxidation or tannin leaching from soil and vegetation. These minerals are more readily dissolved and transported into the well water during periods of increased rainfall and runoff, which is common in the spring. We have a reverse osmosis system for purified drinking water and test water regularly.

During winter 4WD or AWD is recommended. We do our best to maintain the driveway and walkway free of snow and ice but it will be slippery at times. By making a reservation you accept risk of any/all personal injury or vehicle damage due to weather conditions.

Cleaning fee: $250 (*additional fees may be charged, if excessive cleaning is required)

We have a pack and play and high chair available. Please let us know if you need either of these during your stay.
