THINGS TO DO IN THE KOOTENAYS

Kootenay Lake

Located between the Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges, Kootenay lake is the largest natural lake in British Columbia. It is approximately 100 km long and 3 to 5 km wide and offers a variety of activities including boating, kayaking or canoeing, fishing, or relaxing on one of it’s beaches.

Kayaking or Canoeing

The Creston Valley has prime flat water kayaking or canoeing waterways. There are over 17,000 acres of wetlands to paddle on, as well as the Kootenay River which snakes through the Creston Valley to Kootenay Lake. There are many launching sites within an easy drive of the town of Creston.

Fishing

The Creston Valley provides an abundance of world class fishing locations suitable for the beginner or avid angler. Kootenay Lake, a 15 minute drive North of Wynndel, teems with 30 lb Bull Trout (Dolly Varden) and Gerrard Rainbow Trout, as well as smaller sport fish such as Kokanee Salmon (a land-locked species of salmon). Duck Lake, located between Wynndel and Kootenay Lake, is stocked with Large Mouth Bass and Yellow Perch. Finally, the Creston Valley offers a multitude of creeks and rivers containing Rainbow Trout, Rock Mountain White fish, Burbot, Cut throat Trout and Kokanee. Opportunities abound for fishing from shore or by boat, as well as fly-fishing and ice fishing on Duck Lake in the winter months.

Hiking

Don’t forget your hiking boots! The Creston Valley offers a number of trails to explore on foot, including hikes to secluded waterfalls and lookout vistas.

Country roads and terrain make for an abundance of biking routes.

In the winter months Creston is surrounded by ski hills, including five fantastic ski resorts within a 2 hour drive: Red Mountain (located in Rossland), White water (located in Nelson), Switzer Mountain (located in Sandpoint Idaho, USA), Kimberely (located in Kimberley) and Fernie (located in Fernie). This central location makes the Creston Valley an ideal base from which to explore the world class ski resorts of the Rockie Mountains.

Golf

Both beginner and experienced golfers can take a swing at the Creston Golf Club, an 18-hole, par-72 course with views of the Creston Valley, Kootenay River, Purcell and Selkirk Mountains. You may find yourself golfing under the perusal of osprey, blue heron, deer and the occasional elk.

There are 17 other golf courses all within a 2 hour radius of Creston.

Creston and District Historical Museum

The “Stone House” Museum grounds will take you back in time to Pioneer life in the Creston Valley. A Trapper’s Cabin, a turn of the century Schoolhouse, an Historic Steam Locomotive, and an early Store and Doctor’s office are all part of the tour.

Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area

The Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area is the first and largest wildlife management area in British Columbia. It spans an area of 17,000 acres and gives you and opportunity to see an array of wild life including elk, moose, deer, coyotes, muskrat, beaver and river otters, as well as diverse bird species for which the area is known.

Hiking, cycling, canoeing, picnicking, wildlife viewing, hunting and fishing, as well as an Interpretive Centre are all available.

We offer two side by side log cabins, built in 2005, made from large diameter hand peeled logs and milled lumber from our own forest.

Each chalet features two upstairs bedrooms.
The lake facing bedroom is equipped with a king size bed and two extra long twin beds . The bedroom to the rear features a queen size bed and two extra long twin beds.

Each chalet can sleep a maximum of 8 guests, but is most comfortable for up to 6 guests.

Roomy balcony to the lake and covered decks to three sides allow you to safely store your children's beach toys and under roof laundry lines make it easy to dry your beach towels and swim wear.
The chalets are equipped with your convenience in mind.

Like at home, enjoy a kitchen that comes with a dishwasher, full size fridge, microwave and enough small appliances, pots and pans to cook your favorite meal.
Cast Iron pans for fire pits and a starter kit of cleaning supplies is being provided.

Winter Stays: When there is snow on the ground, the driveway to the cabin will be closed to vehicles and guests will have a short hike in (approximately150 metres). We recommend checking-in and out in daylight hours as the driveway is not lit up. Pets are welcome to stay at Cloud #9 Cabin. You will need to include them in your reservation so we are aware they are coming. They are not allowed in or on the bed as it’s hard on our linens.

- "This was our second stay we enjoyed it so kuch" - "This is a cozy cabin for two that is completely private in the woods near the owner's house. When I say "secluded" I mean not visible from the street or the owner's house which is in a very quiet area. We had a rainy weekend, so we didn't use the fire pit outside, but made a nice fire in the wood stove inside. Though only for two, it's not cramped by any means. The hot tub is a two person one and was an awesome way to end our days. You won't be sorry to stay here."

To stay connected, in an area with next to no cell service, we have now equipped the cabin with it's own Wi-Fi (Copper Telus 6 - fast enough for streaming videos- set your phone to wifi calling ). Since Summers seem to be getting hotter every year, we now installed a good cooling Window A/C unit that keeps the cabin cool even on a very hot day. It's only a short walk or drive to Mackie Beach Park with it's beautiful pebble beach, picnic tables, swim platform, firepit, washroom and shaded parking area. The cabin is located just above the beach campground area and a short 2 min walk away from a long swim or from a quick refreshing dip in the lake. For boaters, the public boat ramp is 1 mile south and free to use ( please consider a donation - a donation box is installed next to the ramp - please bring cash). Boaters are welcome to park their boats in our designated boat parking area for a $10/ night fee. The boat fee must be paid to the host directly. Useful items to bring are: foldable camping chairs; table top or portable BBQ and propane, an approved propane fire pit during fire ban times, swim shoes, matches, fire starters, a flash light, paddle boards or kayaks/canoe. The resort is on a boil water advisory, please bring bottled water or bring the tap water to a 3 minute rolling boil.
**Boswell is situated approximately halfway between Creston and the ferry landing in Kootenay Bay. The ferry crosses the lake towards the Nelson side and is free to use. Guests often walk on and enjoy a free round trip lake cruise with breathtaking views. The Osprey 2000's snack bar sells very delicious hot dogs and bakery items. Kokanee Golf Resort is a short 25 min. drive by car. Hundreds of secluded beaches and bays to explore by boat! Guests may leave their canoes and kayaks at our beach area (bring a chain and padlock). We allow dogs but no other kind of pets. We absolutely do NO allow cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, reptiles etc ). Our nightly dog fee/PER DOG is $10 Chihuahua/Yorkie size, $15 up to 25 kg ( 50 pounds) and $ 25 for very large or very hairy breeds. The dog fee covers additional cleaning and must be paid to the host directly. Dogs must be kept on a leash. To guests who would rather want to stay at an accommodation that is more spacious and right by the water, we recommend a stay at one of our Waterfront Log Chalets. Guests with mobility issues or families with smaller children usually prefer a stay at our 1500 sft vacation home. * This cabin is clean, functional and affordable but more like a tiny home.

The view from the bedroom/living area is amazing (beautiful view of Kootenay Lake and mountains). It is a reasonable drive from the artisan shops of Crawford Bay and the ferry across the lake. For our needs it was perfect! Those looking to be right on the water might be disappointed BUT location is clear in the cottage description."

MOUNTAINSIDE GUEST HOUSE

THINGS TO DO IN THE KOOTENAYS

Kootenay Lake

Located between the Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges, Kootenay lake is the largest natural lake in British Columbia. It is approximately 100 km long and 3 to 5 km wide and offers a variety of activities including boating, kayaking or canoeing, fishing, or relaxing on one of it’s beaches.

Kayaking or Canoeing

The Creston Valley has prime flat water kayaking or canoeing waterways. There are over 17,000 acres of wetlands to paddle on, as well as the Kootenay River which snakes through the Creston Valley to Kootenay Lake. There are many launching sites within an easy drive of the town of Creston.

Fishing

The Creston Valley provides an abundance of world class fishing locations suitable for the beginner or avid angler. Kootenay Lake, a 15 minute drive North of Wynndel, teems with 30 lb Bull Trout (Dolly Varden) and Gerrard Rainbow Trout, as well as smaller sport fish such as Kokanee Salmon (a land-locked species of salmon). Duck Lake, located between Wynndel and Kootenay Lake, is stocked with Large Mouth Bass and Yellow Perch. Finally, the Creston Valley offers a multitude of creeks and rivers containing Rainbow Trout, Rock Mountain Whitefish, Burbot, Cutthroat Trout and Kokanee. Opportunities abound for fishing from shore or by boat, as well as fly-fishing and ice fishing on Duck Lake in the winter months.

Hiking

Don’t forget your hiking boots! The Creston Valley offers a number of trails to explore on foot, including hikes to secluded waterfalls and lookout vistas.

Biking

Country roads and terrain make for an abundance of biking routes.

Skiing

In the winter months Creston is surrounded by ski hills, including five fantastic ski resorts within a 2 hour drive: Red Mountain (located in Rossland), Whitewater (located in Nelson), Switzer Mountain (located in Sandpoint Idaho, USA), Kimberely (located in Kimberley) and Fernie (located in Fernie). This central location makes the Creston Valley an ideal base from which to explore the world class ski resorts of the Rockie Mountains.

Hotsprings

Several natural hotsprings are located within a 2 hour radius, including the caves of Ainsworth Hot Springs.

Columbia Brewery Tours

Home of the world famous Kokanee beer, and one of the largest brewing companies in Canada. During the summer season the Columbia Brewery offers daily tours of the brewery.

Wine Tours

Golf

Both beginner and experienced golfers can take a swing at the Creston Golf Club, an 18-hole, par-72 course with views of the Creston Valley, Kootenay River, Purcell and Selkirk Mountains. You may find yourself golfing under the perusal of osprey, blue heron, deer and the occasional elk.

There are 17 other golf courses all within a 2 hour radius of Creston.

Creston and District Historical Museum

The “Stone House” Museum grounds will take you back in time to Pioneer life in the Creston Valley. A Trapper’s Cabin, a turn of the century Schoolhouse, an Historic Steam Locomotive, and an early Store and Doctor’s office are all part of the tour.

Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area

The Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area is the first and largest wildlife management area in British Columbia. It spans an area of 17,000 acres and gives you and opportunity to see an array of wild life including elk, moose, deer, coyotes, muskrat, beaver and river otters, as well as diverse bird species for which the area is known.

Hiking, cycling, canoeing, picnicking, wildlife viewing, hunting and fishing, as well as an Interpretive Centre are all available.

Art Gallery Tours

The Creston Valley has a diverse artist community, with a number of galleries and studios open to the public. An Art Walk brochure is available with information on various locations to visit.

The Creston Valley offers a number of events to keep you occupied. Valentine’s Bonspiel, Butterfly Bonspiel, Home and Garden Show, Blossom Festival, Yaquan Nuki Pow Wow, Collector Car Show, along with many music festivals, farmers markets, fairs and theatrical performances.

Day Trips

Is a day trip on your agenda? Just pick a direction! Within no time you can be enjoying Kootenay Lake, sipping coffee in Nelson, checking out the artisans of Crawford Bay, or cross-border shopping in Idaho. Wynndel is also on the SELKIRK LOOP.
