Welcome to Mawhiti Cottage. We hope that you have a wonderful stay in our much loved home, so named because this is the perfect place to switch off, forget the world and just relax! Mawhiti is the Maori word for ‘escape’; the very essence of what our cottage offers: peace, tranquillity, and serenity. The sunsets are amazing, the soothing sound of the waves in the background, and the stunning views make it one of the most special places to stay in the area. It is wild and windy though, and sand gets in everywhere, but if you are ok with that, just sit back and enjoy the magic of the setting. If you choose to keep in touch with the modern world, we have fibre optic internet, which means that you can take your laptop to the table on the deck and work from home, enjoying the views and sea air.

Mawhiti Cottage is very close to the Northern Wairoa Golf Club, where you can enjoy either a 9 or 18 hole round of golf for a very reasonable green fee, and golf carts are also available to hire.

A few important things to note before booking:
*The price per night is for two people. At this time, we are limiting guest numbers to two people only.

*You will need to supply all of your own linen. The beds have pillows and duvets.

* Because of our eco-friendly sewerage system, guests are requested to only use eco friendly personal products at the cottage.

*Please note that access to the cottage is down a short grassy slope, which can be slippery when wet. Those with mobility issues may find this a challenge.

*At this stage, outdoor living is limited to the very large ocean facing deck as work is not yet complete on the other outdoor areas. Currently, there are still some building materials on the cottage grounds.

Located 2.5 hrs north of Auckland Airport. We are only 8km north of Dargaville, and then 4 minutes to Baylys Beach. Kai Iwi Lakes is 20 minutes away for a swim. Waipoua Forest and the mighty Tane Mahuta is only a 40 minute drive, with Opononi being just a day trip away.
The unit is spacious and families are welcome or if you just want some space to unwind and relax. Two bedroom unit - B1: one Queen bed B2: one Queen bed and bunks that can easily be dropped to be two singles still leaving ample space in the room. The space
Upstairs features 2 bedrooms (both with king sized beds), a family bathroom, separate toilet and kitchen/ lounge/ dining with easy flow onto wrap around deck. Lounge features comfy reclining chairs, 50" smart TV, and plenty of games to keep the family entertained in the evenings. You'll love the separate downstairs retreat, complete with 2x bunk beds (bottom doubles, top singles), movie projector (smart TV enabled with Netflix/ Disney) with soundbar and subwoofer. A new heatpump keeps the space comfortable all year round. A table tennis table and Arcade machine will keep the family entertained. Additional fridge space available downstairs if needed. Plenty of space to play in the fenced backyard and surrounding quiet streets. Outdoor games and beach/ sun shelter also provided

Guest access
The entire property will be yours to enjoy without interruption. A concrete pad/ washdown area, complete with fish cleaning bench is available to you after a days exploring. A barbeque is available on the outdoor deck near the dining room for your use. Toaster, tea and coffee making facilities and a few condiments are available for guests to use. There is a locked storage room at the rear of the house that will remain inaccessible throughout your stay. A garage at the bottom of the section will also remain locked.

Other things to note
Clean and tidy throughout, however some metal components of the exterior are showing signs of exposure to a west coast marine environment with some corrosion (there will also be sea salt spray on the windows!) The Decor in the entrance and hallway is typical of a 1970s home complete with patterned wallpaper and dark wood trims. Someone with an eye for detail will spot a few minor imperfections in the walls and kitchen benchtop. The number of beds made up will be agreed prior to check in.
