We stayed at the First Light Villa and every detail has been so thoughtfully considered to make your stay feel seamless and special. The photos are lovely, but they don’t capture the peaceful energy and magic of the space. It’s serene and calming—almost zen-like. The jacuzzi, tucked into the lush greenery, is an absolute dream. There are two fireplaces—one inside and one on the deck, adding a cozy charm that’s perfect for any time of day. The kitchen was fully stocked with breakfast essentials (and then some): smoked salmon, yogurt, oatmeal, eggs—anything we requested! It was luxury from start to finish. The views are simply breathtaking, and the expansive deck is the ideal spot to soak them all in. The upstairs bedroom is spectacular, with panoramic windows that make waking up feel like a dream. We’ve stayed in many places over the years, but this one tops the list. "

- "This is a unique historical NZ colonial property set on the Russell waterfront and the centre of all the action in Russell.The entire hotel reflects its historical past with authentic decor, artefacts and art works. It is a sightseein opportunity in itself.All meals are offered in the dining areas which include a main indoor restaurant and a deck.A shady garden bar is inviting on a hot day.The food reflects the culinary offerings in Northland with delicious seafood dishes and the inventve use of traditional Maori kai such as boil up and hangi.The staff are efficient and friendly even at very busy times. Our standard room was spacious and well appointed.Situated on the first floor and on the garden bar side ,we appreciated the lift. Although it didn't bother us this side could be a bit noisy for some. We enjoyed the party atmosphere, the peep of the sea and the view to the hills above Russell.Plenty of other options for rooms in the hotel. As unique as you can get! This gorgeous 1870's wooden chapel has been lovingly transported and restored into perfect holiday accommodation. The space is perfectly set up as a couples getaway providing an ideal escape from day to day life.
Located just 5 minutes drive from Russell, the Chapel at the Olive Grove is close enough to town to enjoy all there is to offer and it also has a Kitchenette and BBQ for those wishing to stay in for a quiet, romantic evening together.

The chapel was built in 1875 in Kawakawa, Bay of Islands by Irish coal miners and was formerly know as St Francis Xavier catholic church.
It is listed as a Category 2 Historic building with Heritage New Zealand and is constructed of 1 inch thick rough sawn Kauri planks.
It was moved to the site on the olive grove in 2012 by a local couple after it had fallen into disrepair and was no longer in use. It has been lovingly restored and set for its new life as holiday accommodation amongst the olive trees.

Because of the high ceiling and thick wooden walls the Chapel is lovely and cool in the hot summer months and we have an airconditioner/heatpump for added comfort.

Please do note that there is no TV. There is good wireless Wifi and a portable speaker if you would like to bring your own devise and streaming services to use

The ground floor is open plan living with two seating areas in which to relax and a window seat with expansive views over the Bay.

Our home comfortably sleeps 4 adults in 2 upstairs bedrooms, one with a king bed and the other super king. There are 2 bathrooms on this level.

Outdoor living enjoys all day sun with views to the Bay and beyond. There are 2 seating areas on the deck to enjoy morning coffee and/or breakfast.

Set high above a canopy of native bush with a tranquil view of yachts anchored in the bay below is your own private, downstairs studio, bathed in sunshine, with the quaint historic village of Russell a 5-minute drive away.

Surrounded by nature you can hear Kiwi calling in the night, wake to the sound of Tui, joined by Fantails, Wood Pigeons, Tom Tits, and Weka as they go about their day.

Down a 150-meter native bush track is beautiful secluded Pomare Bay, sheltered by giant Pohutakawa.

Uninterrupted views and ample light provide the perfect retreat for you to chill out, pause and reflect, while soaking up the comfortable contemporary surrounds that include: a spacious living area, kitchenette, TV with Netflix, Wi-Fi, separate bedroom with Queen bed, and roomy bathroom. Or soak up the rays on the expansive deck.

Kept to the highest standard, every effort has been made to ensure your stay is perfect, with all linen provided, quality bedding, high-pressure shower plus toiletries (due to water restrictions baths are not possible), tea & coffee making facilities, toaster, microwave, induction cooktop, all crockery/cutlery/utensils, and a Webber BBQ to cater for light meals

Situated on the ground floor of the private residence the studio has its own private entrance enabling you to come and go freely and enjoy exclusive use.

Parking is available onsite for one vehicle.

We are on limited tank water supply, therefore, would ask that you conserve water.

The main residence is situated above so some movement may be heard and emanate from within both areas.
