- "Loved this place. Very cozy." - "What a gem! Located near Kirkwood Ski Resort yet not too far from S Tahoe. The cabin was perfect for our little group of 4. The place was clean, the towels were plush, beds were comfy and warm, and the fireplace heater created the perfect ambiance while keeping us warm. Besides our cabin, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We enjoyed sitting at the fire pit while my daughter sled down the hill. We didnt get to enjoy the sauna but I'm sure it would've been a nice way to end the day after being on the slopes. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be back."

- "My girlfriend and I were simply blown away. The cabin was as big as a large sweet that we would normally stay in at a Hilton hotel. Everything was perfectly organized clean and safe. The cabin had everything we could possibly want for a weekend getaway. Well working kitchenette with everything you would need to make and eat your own meal right in the cabin. The wood fireplace was easy to use and kept the cabin toasty and comfortable. Everything on the property looked new or in very good condition. From the furniture to the newer Weber Spirit grill on the deck. And small details were very appreciated! Brochures of surrounding attractions and restaurants along with contact information and snacks were left on the table! The entire property outside was beautiful and very well maintained. The walking trails were well marked and easy to navigate. We're only 10 to 15 minutes away from several local eateries pubs and wineries. The note on the pond cottage property details website said that there was a cellular hotspot for Wi-Fi and we were worried about how good the reception would be for video streaming... But we got a perfect signal the entire time were there and were able to stream videos on the Smart TV and continue our normal nighttime TikTok scrolling with no problem 😄 We are already talking about wanting to come back and spend a whole week next time! I cannot recommend this property enough. "

We are looking forward to you spending your vacation in our spacious, comfortable, and well-appointed 3000 square foot single story home. Our home is very relaxing and situated on 5 acres on a sunny mesa with views of the foothills, Sierra crest, and Carson Valley in all directions. Kirkwood, Heavenly, South Lake Tahoe, Grover Hot Springs, and local hiking, fishing, bouldering, snowmobiling spots, and casinos are all <26 miles drives away. Our large great room and kitchen, 4 desk/work spaces, flat front and back lawns, bunk room, comfortable beds/linens make it a great place to relax, play, and work for families and groups. The front and back porches offer great lounging spots as well. We have added faster Internet recently and a level 2 EV charger.
Our house is on a large 5 acre lot with lots of space to stretch out in and away from the congestion in South Lake Tahoe. We have a whole house generator for reliable power even if there are wildfire danger related power shutoffs. We are 23 miles from Kirkwood Ski Resort, 21 miles from Heavenly Ski Resort's Stagecoach lift, and 9-13 miles from the Markleeville/Grover Hot Springs area & 26 miles from South Lake Tahoe. We are at 5400' elevation so you may feel the elevation a bit as well, especially if you go for a walk on Sunrise Trail. Trips to the eastern Sierra and Yosemite National Park are also possible as long day drives with the house as your base.
The MAX occupancy of the house is 10 people (not including infants.) Exceeding this limit will result in loss of deposit and a negative guest review.
Our Alpine Country Business license is #6929
We always come to the house with big plans and end up spending our time relaxing on the back porch or in the living room admiring the views, making a big meal in the huge kitchen with our friends and heading to bed early for a great, quiet night of sleep to recharge! There are plenty of details about the house below, but if you don't feel like reading, feel free to send us a note and we'll happily reply to answer any questions. I've been going to the Sierra for ~20 years now and am happy to share what I know about it.
Mike
PS
Also please note that the house has many amenities (cribs, high chairs, strollers, & changing tables for little ones included that may lighten your packing load for your visit.)
HOUSE AMENITIES
We have a nice big flat lawn in the front and back of the house (sometimes it's green depending on our sprinkler system temperament :-)). There's a nice space to lounge/play outside as well as porches on the back and front of the house. This is a desert area and is very dry and windy. The house is also convenient for parents with a separate bunk bedroom with a TV and 3 high chairs, 1 full size crib, 1 mini crib, 2 bassinets, 1 infant swings, double and single stroller.
WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO GO
Please note the grocery stores/Walmart/Hardware Stores in Gardnerville (20-30 minutes away) are quite extensive (ex: we've bought silver noodles and crab legs there), so no need to truck stuff up there unless you want to or don't want to drive to the grocery stores. We have 3 different pairs of cross-country skis that anyone is welcome to use. The last sizable grocery store (Safeway) on the way up from the bay area is near Martell Rd. near Jackson. There is also a Lowe's and KMart in Martell as well. You will have even more selection if you drive 30 minutes to Carson City which has just about every store you could ask for.
The house is out in the middle of nowhere, but that's part of what is great about it. Hope Valley is 15 minutes away and beautiful and a great place to start for level hikes. There is a hot springs above Markleeville with some nice short hikes as well. If you want something more adventurous I can recommend those as well and we have all our hiking books up there (Mt. Tallac and Desolation Wilderness are 2 classic hard Lake Tahoe hikes).
The views are pretty nice even outside the house and the roads are very quiet so just a stroll outside on Sunrise Trail is rewarding. We are ~20 minutes from Caples Lake where they rent kayaks, Lake Tahoe is about 30 minutes, and Carson River is just across the road. There is a movie theater in the nearest town of Minden/Gardnerville about 25 minutes away. The Eastern Sierra is ridiculously beautiful and Mono Lake, Yosemite Tioga Pass entrance, Mammoth, Bridgeport, Bodie, Bear Valley, Sonora Pass are all doable as day trips from the house with 1-2 1/2 hours of driving 1-way. The fall colors in October can be striking with snow covering the mountain tops and yellow aspen trees. Northern Lake Tahoe resorts are 1-2 hrs. away.
In Gardnerville, we can recommend Overland Pub for a better meal and Woodett's Diner for a traditional diner breakfast.
WEATHER
During the winter it may get as cold as 0-10 degrees at night. Our house is at ~5400' elevation. We generally don't get pounded by 3+ feet of snow like Tahoe itself during the winter, but you may wake up to a 1 or 2 foot snowstorm during the bad storm weekends. The county plows the road, but may take some time to get to the local street.
RECORDING DEVICES
Please note we use the cameras at the door and on the front yard and driveway to confirm guests abide by the house rules at check-in and during the stay. Any cameras pointed at the back yard will be turned off during the guests stay.
- "It is a beautiful home with plenty of space for a large group. If you need an additional sleeping space, there is an inflatable air mattress in the master bedroom closet. If you need more wood for the wood-burning stove, you’ll find half a cord in the garage.
- "Very nice and modern inside yet rustic outside. Surrounded by woods, quiet and peaceful. A mile to town and even shorter to the Hot Springs with beautiful, easy hike to some water falls. SO many things to see and do in the surrounding area's! We LOVED our stay here and the owners are extremely friendly and helpful. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!" - "What else do you expect from a host? Instant reply. The instruction book gives very clear notice and more important, concise! Extra sets of liners are labeled nicely. I think he is one of the top 3 hosts whose cabins I have been stayed! A few things needs to improve : there were lots of snow on deck, stairs and driveway. Not safe to use front door. And there is no extra set of keys. One night the power lost and garage door cannot been opened. But the host answered the phone immediately and luckily the power was back soon. Overall we had a good time. Will stay here again if possible."

- "The cabin is modern, cozy, and comfortable. We happened to be there on a day that broke heat records for the area and the house remained quite cool. The house was perfect for 4 adults and 1 toddler to relax and recreate together and apart. The river is gorgeous and you really can hear it from almost every part of the cabin. Only advice: bring ice the first day because the fridge icemaker takes about 24 hours to get going. Such a lovely getaway from the concrete jungle!!"

We both have lived in this unique and peaceful part of the Sierras not far from Lake Tahoe for over 40 years, and when we met 27 years ago and were searching for a piece of property on which to build our dream home, friends would ask us where our favorite location was. It was always Alpine County, and more specifically, a stretch of the West Fork of the Carson River which meanders through the famous old Ace Hereford Ranch. Miraculously, in 2001 a small 20-acre section of the ranch became available, complete with an old rambling Cliff May ranch house badly in need of repair.
After purchasing our dream-come-true, concurrently with the restoration process, we began building a cottage near the main house for our retired parents.
The property is resplendent with willow and wild rose thickets providing a protective home for quite literally hundreds of California Quail as well as the occasional Mt. Quail and elusive Chukkar. It wasn't long before the site became affectionally known as Quail Hollow.
The cozy cottage was built in the Arts and Crafts style by local friends and craftsmen, utilizing green materials and local stone. The numerous windows in every room welcome the rising sun in the East and take full advantage of the awe-inspiring view of the Carson River and the stunning volcanic basalt cliffs beyond. The kitchen, living room, dining nook and reading nook are all part of a spacious yet comforting great room which invites conversation and comraderie. The sleeping areas are quiet and comforting, the patios soothing and restful. The local wildlife which may include bobcat, raccoon, beaver, wild turkeys and muskrat often saunter past the dining nook window, and of course the ever-present quail and hummingbirds appreciate an occasional handout, the former showing off their adorable families of tiny 'quailets' throughout the summer months. Bald and Golden Eagle soar overhead, Jays nest in the nearby pines and Cliff Swallows build their mud colonies on the cliffs.
A peaceful presence can always be found here, whether the Autumn colors have begun to dazzle, a dusting of fresh snow is on the ground or when the summer-blooming lavender is ahum with bees, as the sounds of the city and the pressures of everyday life are left far behind. Come rest your spirit here, explore the area, paint a landscape, work on the story you started to write, bring several favorite books to read, and return home refreshed and rejuvenated.
- "This cabin has lots of interesting personality, is clean, quiet, beautifully designed and is in a lovely location." - "A wonderful quiet location and very comfortable house with superb hostess. The best!!" - "Susan's cozy cottage is a great place to relax and recharge. The cottage is very private. The location, right along the river, can't be beat. The patio and several seating areas and french doors all face out to the river, so that one can enjoy it's presence even indoors. The bedrooms are set at either side of the house, with a large living space in between. It had pretty much every amenity that I could want during our visit."

There is stairs in the front and a ramp by the garage and side of the house. Very convenient for wheeling in scrapbooking bags. The house was big enough for 6 ladies for a scrap weekend.
