- "We found the house easily, entered without any problem and were pleasantly surprised by the welcome gifts which had been kindly left out on the kitchen table. All facilities were available and the rooms were comfortably fitted and matched the online description. There was parking on site, and the location of the property was practical for our touring plans. We were keen to try out the fireplace one evening and after a long search found a couple of pieces of peat in one of the outside houses. (Wish we had discovered the box of fire starter in the broom area that same day!) Our stay at Sykes Cottage was everything we had hoped for."

Picnic tables (shared with other properties on-site). Private parking for 1 car. No smoking. Please note: There is an unfenced Loch in the grounds, 100 yards away.. The Boat House has a vestibule that can be used for boots and coats and has the shower room adjacent. You then walk into the feature open-plan kitchen/dining/living room which has wooden floors and French doors onto an outside seating area overlooking the loch. The living space is roomy and comfortable, and is the perfect place to recharge after long days out exploring the islands. There’s a staircase that leads up from the living area to the galleried bedroom, which boasts a double as well as a small single bed. So if you have a wee one, this room is brilliant as a family room for three.

The Boat House is in such a secluded, private spot that it will be all yours. The patio is private and has a picnic table which is ideal for lunching or use in the evening to sit back and watch the spectacular sunsets over the loch, which is accessible from the gardens - ideal for spotting visiting wild fowl, hen harriers and even otters!

Lochmaddy is a harbour village and was once a major herring port and well known in the 17th century as a hideout for pirates! Now the village is a main hub for the ferries from Harris, and Uig on the Isle of Skye. It’s a fabulous sail across The Minch separating the Inner and Outer Hebrides where you may be lucky enough to see dolphins and even orca whales. However, if you want to arrive by air, there is an airport on the island of Benbecula, which is connected to North Uist by a causeway. Lochmaddy has a shop, a café, a great pub and restaurants in the village hotels. All you need is within walking distance from The Boat House, that is when you’re not out and about exploring the hills, lochs, white beaches, many walking trails and the beautiful wild flowers of the machairs.

North Uist, your ‘home island’ whilst staying at The Boat House, is a fascinating place, displaying what is known as a ’drowned landscape’ covered by peat and lochans. It’s a unique and magical setting and has lovely white beaches on the west coast which are less well known than those on Harris, but equally beautiful. As with Lewis and the other Outer Hebridean islands, there are several prehistoric sites across North Uist, including the huge chambered burial cairn of Barpa Langais.

The walking and cycling is outstanding in the Western Isles and many ancient routes have been joined together to form the Hebridean Way which traverses the length of the islands. It is very well signposted and well worth following to get a taste of what the islands have to offer. The bus network works well with the trail so you can walk one way and easily get a lift back. Wherever you go on North Uist you will stand a great chance at spotting wildlife with many species not found easily elsewhere, having adapted to the unusual landscapes. You may see otters and many types of rare bird species, including the corncrake. There’s also the largest colony of grey seals in Europe just off North Uist, and, as you may see when crossing The Minch, there are marine mammals such as dolphins, basking sharks and whales cruising just off the coast, as well as white tailed sea eagles.

With its mix of salt water and freshwater lochs, North Uist is an angler’s paradise. Don’t hesitate, stay at The Boat House and have the perfect base to explore this fascinating part of the world. Beaches 7 miles. Shop 50 yards, pub and restaurants 300 yards.

Spacious 5 bedroom, 4 bathroom holiday home in Grimsay, North Uist.
Fabulous views from every window, a home from home. We are fully equipped to make sure your stay is as comfortable as you want.
I look forward to welcoming you soon.

Guest Reviews:

- "We loved Taigh Mairi. Great to have a spacious property for all the family to have their own space, and the large kitchen and separate dining room was very useful. We've been to the Uists several times, but Grimsay was a lovely new part to visit. We enjoyed the quiet road around Grimsay for walks and running, and it was very convenient to just be 10 mins drive from Balivanich with its two supermarkets and fast EV charging point. The cakes/bakes honesty box at the bottom of the drive is a delightful treat!Although this property is very close to the tidal areas, sea lochs and lochens, and there isn't actually a beach within walking distance (it's hard to tell on google maps). However, there are several sandy beaches nearby - Cula beach is 14 mins drive, for example. We loved RSPB Balranald in North Uist (great to have 24hr toilets and vending machines next to the campsite there), and enjoyed the exhibitions at the Loch Maddy arts centre. Further away, the beaches at Kildonan and Kilpheder are spectacular. The cafe at the Kildonan center even has gluten free/vegan cakes, which was a bonus!(note: if you have an EV, charging in the lower part of South Uist is challenging (all the fast chargers were broken when we visited), so you need to charge at Balivanich, Loch Maddy or Kirkebost - a bit of a stretch if you are staying further away.)"

- "The Solas Pod was a wonderful place to stay. It is newly constructed and the owners have really thought about how to make the small space work. The kitchen has new appliances and quality pots and pans. The heated floor warmed the space with ease. It was snug and cosy inside even when there was a gale raging outside. There is also fast wifi and a smart TV. The bed was very comfortable although felt narrow for two people. The location is close to the wonderful Taigh Iar beach and there were corncrakes and other birds nesting in the fields in spring. Lochmaddy is a port village and the CalMac arrives here from Uig on the Isle of Skye, it is a fabulous sail across the Minch separating the Inner and Outer Hebrides. The Studio is small, but very well formed and perfect for a couple on a tour of the Islands. Entering the property you have a small dining room/conservatory which is fantastic for views of the sunset. This room leads into the open-plan kitchen/living room which has good space for two people and wooden floors. It’s a great place to rest and recuperate after long days out on Hebridean adventures. There is a Swiss-style sleeping platform on the mezzanine level, which has alternate tread stairs making it unsuitable for those a little unsure of their footing. The shower room is snug but well appointed. North Uist is your home island staying at The Studio and it is known as the ’drowned landscape’ because it is covered by peat bogs and lochans. As with Lewis and the other Outer Hebrides islands there are several prehistoric sites across North Uist, including the huge chambered burial cairn of Barpa Langais. The walking and cycling is outstanding in the Western Isles. Many ancient routes have been joined together to form the Hebridean Way which is both a walking and cycling trail that traverses the length of the islands. It is very well signposted and well worth following to get a taste of the islands. The bus network works well with the trail so you can walk one way and easily get a lift back. Due to its unusual landscape there are many species not found easily elsewhere. Otters and many types of rare bird species, including the corncrake can be seen and also the largest colony of grey seals in Europe. - "A truly remarkable haven, hidden away in the Outer Hebrides. If you were ever lucky enough to find such an island in the UK, you would probably be camping. Not so on Ronay! The house is very comfortable with all mod cons, and is generously appointed. No shortage of hot water, gas and electricity. The island is big enough to get lost on, with endless scope for walks and picnics, and the sea offering great diving, fishing and other water sports. A perfect place to escape to - a place where you can gently unwind and recharge. Ronay is an exceptional island and would suit anyone looking to escape pavements, cars and noise. "
