Clover Cottage is a fantastic holiday home on the Isle of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. With sea views and being only a short walk to a huge sandy beach, it’s the perfect place to spend a week or two as a couple or as a family. Clover Cottage is a new-build bungalow which has been designed and finished brilliantly by the owners.
There’s a fantastic open plan kitchen/dining/living space with doors out onto the garden. There are two spacious bedrooms, a double and a twin. A great family bathroom with double walk-in shower and outside, the enclosed garden is lovely with a decking area to sit out late in the summer amazed at the midnight blue skies. From the garden you can see across the fields of sheep to the wild north Atlantic; It’s a very special spot indeed. Also, there’s a utility/games room in the outbuilding with washing machine and table tennis table. The outbuilding is also a great place to store bikes, canoes, surfboards, etc.
North Uist is an amazing place for a holiday, not least because you are still in the UK but get the sense of being on another planet! It truly is life on the edge with the influence of the north Atlantic only yards away. North Uist is joined by causeway to many other Hebridean islands, including Berneray, Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay. Harris & Lewis are only a short ferry ride away.

It’s a wonderful place to spend a week or two, and as soon as you arrive, you’ll be wanting more time than you’ve booked for!

- "Overall it was an extraordinary, wonderful week with exploring the landscape and wildlife of the outer Hebrides. Thank you" - "We stayed at this wonderful cottage for a week with our family of four. Everything was even better than we expected, the cottage is well equiped and Middlequater is the perfect base to explore the Western Isles." - "Peace and tranquillity for us - a quiet getaway with all modern conveniences. Basic shopping is very accessible and 3 ferry ports within easy reach. In February the most beautiful beaches of white sand were empty. Walking is a real pleasure, but maybe take a flask. So many geese, oyster catchers, lapwings. Amazing."

Town: Balivanich is a lovelyvillage on the Isle of Benbecula, off the west coast of Scotland's Outer Hebrides. The settlement is well-known for being Benbecula's primary centre, with easy access to the islands of South Uist and North Uist through causeways. Within the village, you'll discover the MacLennans Supermarket, where you can buy a variety of goods to create home-cooked meals, as well as The Stepping Stone Restaurant and The Island Kitchen Cafe.
- "We found the house easily, entered without any problem and were pleasantly surprised by the welcome gifts which had been kindly left out on the kitchen table. All facilities were available and the rooms were comfortably fitted and matched the online description. There was parking on site, and the location of the property was practical for our touring plans. We were keen to try out the fireplace one evening and after a long search found a couple of pieces of peat in one of the outside houses. (Wish we had discovered the box of fire starter in the broom area that same day!) Our stay at Sykes Cottage was everything we had hoped for."

This is a perfect place to spend a week exploring the Western Isles or stopping over for a few nights on a journey through the islands.. Ground Floor:
Open plan living space.
Living area: 36" Freeview TV, CD Player, Gas Woodburner, French Doors Leading To Patio
Dining area.
Kitchen area: Electric Oven, Gas Hob, Fridge/Freezer, Dishwasher, Washer Dryer
Shower Room: Cubicle Shower, Toilet
First Floor:
Bedroom: Galleried, Double (4ft 6in) Bed, Single (3ft) Bed. Gas central heating, gas, electricity, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi included. . Patio area. Picnic tables (shared with other properties on-site). Private parking for 1 car. No smoking. Please note: There is an unfenced Loch in the grounds, 100 yards away.. The Boat House has a vestibule that can be used for boots and coats and has the shower room adjacent. You then walk into the feature open-plan kitchen/dining/living room which has wooden floors and French doors onto an outside seating area overlooking the loch. The living space is roomy and comfortable, and is the perfect place to recharge after long days out exploring the islands. There’s a staircase that leads up from the living area to the galleried bedroom, which boasts a double as well as a small single bed. So if you have a wee one, this room is brilliant as a family room for three.
The Boat House is in such a secluded, private spot that it will be all yours. The patio is private and has a picnic table which is ideal for lunching or use in the evening to sit back and watch the spectacular sunsets over the loch, which is accessible from the gardens - ideal for spotting visiting wild fowl, hen harriers and even otters!
Lochmaddy is a harbour village and was once a major herring port and well known in the 17th century as a hideout for pirates! Now the village is a main hub for the ferries from Harris, and Uig on the Isle of Skye. It’s a fabulous sail across The Minch separating the Inner and Outer Hebrides where you may be lucky enough to see dolphins and even orca whales. However, if you want to arrive by air, there is an airport on the island of Benbecula, which is connected to North Uist by a causeway. Lochmaddy has a shop, a café, a great pub and restaurants in the village hotels. All you need is within walking distance from The Boat House, that is when you’re not out and about exploring the hills, lochs, white beaches, many walking trails and the beautiful wild flowers of the machairs.
North Uist, your ‘home island’ whilst staying at The Boat House, is a fascinating place, displaying what is known as a ’drowned landscape’ covered by peat and lochans. It’s a unique and magical setting and has lovely white beaches on the west coast which are less well known than those on Harris, but equally beautiful. As with Lewis and the other Outer Hebridean islands, there are several prehistoric sites across North Uist, including the huge chambered burial cairn of Barpa Langais.
The walking and cycling is outstanding in the Western Isles and many ancient routes have been joined together to form the Hebridean Way which traverses the length of the islands. It is very well signposted and well worth following to get a taste of what the islands have to offer. The bus network works well with the trail so you can walk one way and easily get a lift back. Wherever you go on North Uist you will stand a great chance at spotting wildlife with many species not found easily elsewhere, having adapted to the unusual landscapes. You may see otters and many types of rare bird species, including the corncrake. There’s also the largest colony of grey seals in Europe just off North Uist, and, as you may see when crossing The Minch, there are marine mammals such as dolphins, basking sharks and whales cruising just off the coast, as well as white tailed sea eagles.
With its mix of salt water and freshwater lochs, North Uist is an angler’s paradise. Don’t hesitate, stay at The Boat House and have the perfect base to explore this fascinating part of the world. Beaches 7 miles. Shop 50 yards, pub and restaurants 300 yards.

This remote village is surrounded by pristine beaches and rugged landscapes and offers a serene escape from the hustle of modern life. Strolling along the expansive sandy shores, you'll feel the brisk Atlantic breeze and witness the mesmerising dance of waves against the rocky coastline. Sollas itself is a charming hamlet, which still has some traditional thatched cottages, preserving the island's rich cultural heritage. The warm hospitality of the locals adds a special touch, making visitors feel genuinely welcome. Nature enthusiasts will revel in the birdwatching opportunities, as the area is a haven for diverse avian species. As the sun sets over the Atlantic, casting hues of orange and pink across the horizon, Sollas reveals its enchanting, peaceful character—a place where time seems to stand still, inviting introspection and a deep connection with the untamed beauty of the Scottish isles.
- "The Solas Pod was a wonderful place to stay. It is newly constructed and the owners have really thought about how to make the small space work. The kitchen has new appliances and quality pots and pans. The heated floor warmed the space with ease. It was snug and cosy inside even when there was a gale raging outside. There is also fast wifi and a smart TV. The bed was very comfortable although felt narrow for two people. The location is close to the wonderful Taigh Iar beach and there were corncrakes and other birds nesting in the fields in spring. Our hosts were friendly and welcoming and made us feel right at home."
