- "Loved the room! Nice atmosphere and great location. A bit of trouble checking in. I arrived by uber from the airport, and I initially walked up the stairs to the front entrance. The stairs were overgrown with thorny bushes and it was hard to walk up and hurt my feet/ankles because of the thorns. Prior to arriving, the owners sent multiple texts/emails with links and instructions about using a keypad to get in. There was no keypad on the front door. So I then went to the side door where there was a keypad. The code I was given did not work, so I contacted the owner. I sent photos of the keypad and videos of me pulling the door closed as instructed. The owner gave me a second code that did not work, and then asked if I was at the right house (though my photos and videos should have indicated if I was at the right place). I spent 30 minutes in the 90° heat, unable to get inside while going back and forth with the owner. I was about to call another uber to take me to a hotel, when finally the owner informed me there was another entrance in the back by the trash cans! In the back there were 2 more doors with keypads I tried each one, figured out which one the code worked on and then the door still didn’t open because I had to put it and push hard because it gets stuck. Once inside it was sweltering hot because the AC wasn’t even turned on! It was horrible. The owner’s only response was “thank you for letting me know”"

This completely renovated home is located in a quiet tree-lined Jo neighborhood just two blocks from the beautiful University of Puget Sound campus. Guests share the entrance with hosts who live on the first floor. Up one flight of stairs and through a doorway to the second floor, guests have exclusive use of the second floor in this spotless home. This entire floor was added 10 years ago and features two large bedrooms (air conditioning), bathroom with shower, sitting room, and fully equipped kitchen. There is a door at the top of the stairs into the sitting room, which closes off from the downstairs, allowing total privacy.
There is a laundry room located on the first floor, which guests are welcome to share with the hosts.

This home has undergone a very long and extensive, COMPLETE remodel. All work has been done by us. "This Old House" enthusiasts would be proud. We have striven for an English country cottage look - down to the numerous gardens and hand-planed white picket fence.

To reiterate above information: Guests will have use of the entire second floor where two bedrooms, full bathroom, kitchenette , and sitting room are located.
Hosts live downstairs and share the front door/entrance with guests.
The sitting room has an HD TV and small dining area. There is a fully equipped kitchenette; and a huge master bedroom (queen bed) with HD TV, sitting and desk areas; a bathroom with shower and small tub, fully furnished kitchenette and a second bedroom (queen bed). Guests have full use of the front porch with old fashioned porch swing and wicker furniture - reminiscent of days gone by. There is also a private brick patio with gardens, a water feature, firepit and patio string lights. You have complete access and use of these areas. Enjoy your morning cup of coffee or afternoon cocktails overlooking our lovely gardens either on the front porch or patio.

Parents visiting their student(s) at UPS are always welcome. We are literally two blocks from the main entrance of the Administration Building from our property.
We designed our renovations with the intention of offering UPS parents a welcoming place to stay when visiting their children at the University.

Our downstairs dining room (seats 8) (and full kitchen) can be available upon request for a special meal/occasion. (Parents of UPS students can prepare their favorite meal and/or have them bring a few friends over for dinner). With notice, hosts will make themselves scarce for the evening.

Commencement View Cottage built in 1910 is a completely renovated house with commanding views of Commencement Bay in Tacoma.
This house was renovated with the traveler in mind.

The cottage features 2 bedrooms. Each bedroom has a queen bed with a high quality mattress. There is one renovated bathroom with all of the amenities like a make up mirror, shampoo, conditioner, toiletries, scale, curling iron. *****This house is over 100 years old. Please be aware that the bathroom entry is through the master bedroom*****

Enjoy the amazing views from all 3 decks. Views are to be had from the eat-in kitchen. The large from deck has a table and chairs, sofa and two comfortable chairs and a rocking chair as well. Cushions for the outdoor furniture are kept indoors from Oct-April.

Enjoy a BBQ with our ceramic egg and enjoy the plants and statuary in the garden. The front porch offers views of Mount Rainier when visible. The back deck faces the water, is very private and offers one of the best views in Tacoma, from the Cascade Mountains to the Olympics, Vashon and Maury Island, and the Browns Point Lighthouse. You will be amazed at the unobstructed view from the back deck. Enjoy lounging in our new luxury deck furniture and enjoy the propane fire pit when it is a little chilly. Entertain yourself with the Port of Tacoma as you watch the boats and cargo ships that use the sound every day. The scenery is constantly changing and even when raining you will have wonderful views. Look for eagles and hawks. In the summer enjoy the sailboats and watch or enjoy a para sail.

Commencement Cottage is located just a 7 minute walk down to the Commencement Bay Waterfront. From there you can walk, bike, or rollerblade for miles on Ruston Way and go out to eat in the many fabulous restaurants on the waterfront. Just a short 5 mile drive on Ruston Way and you have Point Defiance Park a 702 acre park that is home to the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, Fort Nisqually, Vashon Island Ferry, 5 mile drive, hiking trails, tennis, boating, fishing, and beautiful forests to explore. The cottage is quick 5 minute drive to the cute Proctor and 6th Avenue districts, and a 5 minute drive to downtown. We are a 5 minute drive to UPS.

Old town established in 1869 is a short 7 minute walk from the cottage and features restaurants as well. I have a house manual with local activities to enjoy and menus for the Restaurants in Old Town and on Ruston Way waterfront. Commencement View Cottage is located on the very quiet street of North 31st and is set back off of the street so enjoy the peacefulness of this location.

The house is set up with everything needed for you and your guests. Feel free to use my tableware (china, napkins, tablecloths, glassware) for your entertaining. There is plenty of parking. We are one block from the bus line.

Only 3% of rentals are pet friendly. Commencement View cottage is pet friendly with a $100 fee. If you would like to bring a pet please ask me first. More than 1 pet for a total of 2 is $100.

Enjoy all of the amenities of our house including: BBQ, dishwasher, washer/dryer, toiletries board games, WII, Digital t.v. (40 channels), movies, and DVD;s, Netflix. A large chess/checker set, stereo, iron, bath scale, crib, highchair, picnic supplies, linens, and dishes for entertaining, pans, spices and oils so you can feel comfortable cooking in our new kitchen with gas appliances.

It may be dreary outside, but it is always beautiful here.

A couple of things to mention:
You must be 25 to rent my house. I do not allow weddings or parties of any kind. This located a quiet upscale neighborhood. The next door neighbors house is 5 feet from the cottage. No smoking.

Perfect for families and business travelers. Just over the Tacoma Narrows, a private, large (1,300+ sq. ft. / 121 sq. m.), two-bedroom, one-bath in-law apartment in an amazing midcentury modern house with a full kitchen, large washer/dryer, two desks, high-speed wi-fi (150mbps), two bedrooms with king beds, a living room with a 4K 55" Smart TV, queen sofa bed, and a dining table. Private entrance and plenty of off-street parking. Sleeps a maximum of six people.

The space
My home is a custom midcentury modern house designed by Pacific Northwest architect Alan Liddle—a Frank Lloyd Wright associate. It sits on almost an acre of wooded land in a residential neighborhood adjacent to WA Highway 16 and steps from the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The suite is over 1,300 sq. ft. in a sunny daylight basement.

The house has central air-conditioning and heat with vents in the suite though there is no thermostat in the suite. I keep the house on the cool side. There are built-in wall heaters in the living room and each bedroom plus extra blankets for chilly nights.

Coffee, tea, and bottled water are available in the kitchen, along with cooking basics—spices and oils.

Guest access
There are steps down from the parking area to the suite.

The guest suite is a large, private, sunny daylight basement apartment consisting of a spacious living/dining room, full kitchen, one bathroom, en-suite oversized washer/dryer, and two bedrooms. The rest of the house is where I live. Feel free to walk around the property. On a clear day, you'll catch an amazing bridge, water and mountain view from the southeast corner of the property.

Guest interaction
The guest suite has a keypad lock so you're able to self check-in. I'll send you an access code a few days before you check in. The code is changed for each guest.

Neighborhood overview
The neighborhood has easy access to Washington Highway 16 yet is off the beaten path. As you walk around the property and the neighborhood you'll glimpse bridge, Mount Rainier, and water views through towering trees. There's a beautiful waterfront park with beach access at the end of the street and a hidden, wooded park around the corner. Also, we're just minutes by car from downtown Gig Harbor, restaurants, and shops.

About a block away is the pedestrian/bike trail that crosses the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. From the house to the middle of the bridge is a 20-minute walk. It's definitely a must-see with spectacular views.

Getting around
We're not accessible by public transportation so you'll need a car (or taxi, Uber, Lyft).

There's plenty of on-property parking. There is a toll to cross the Tacoma Narrows Bridge leaving Gig Harbor (no toll entering Gig Harbor). It's $6 cash or $7 pay-by-mail. If you're in a rental car, check with the rental company before using pay-by-mail as they might have additional fees. Alternatively, you can buy a Good-To-Go pass, which costs $5 and reduces the toll to $5.

Other things to note

You'll probably hear us move about during the day. Most nights we're in bed and sound asleep before 11 pm and these days whenever I entertain it's usually during afternoon hours.

We are very close to the bridge so you can hear highway traffic when outside, especially during the morning rush hour. Inside the suite is very quiet, almost completely silent.

The reviews are from people that have stayed here and have enjoyed the hospitality of the home. The second floor of the home is the short term rental the 1st floor is the owners suite. The GARAGE AREA IS NOT FOR STORAGE. The laundry area is a common area. The outside of the home has cameras AND there are cameras located inside the laundry garage area only. Cameras are for EV CHARGER, EV VEHICLES as well as supplies in garage.

WOW! What an AMAZING 1st time experiencing an We couldnt have picked a better place and host! Randy was outstanding in welcoming us into his we even got there!! As soon as we arrived, he greeted us at the driveway with chocolates in hand walked us into a VERY CLEAN, well decorated and warm area( I own my own cleaning company, so clean was important!)along with 3 different kinds of wine to choose from(much needed after driving over the pass!) and completely stocked with everything anybody needed(lots of great snacks, including ice cream bars in the freezer!) He kept contact throughout the weekend, to keep us informed of, well, things like the 3 deer that greeted us as we arrived back on a dark Saturday night! haha! We are so very impressed with Randy and his place he shares with so many! Every detail was perfect! As you can see from the photos, the bedroom is roomy and truly comfortable. the primary has the en suite bathroom has a deep soaking tub/ shower. Oh so relaxing. The 2nd bathroom has the walk in shower.
The home is a wonderful place to stay. It is within walking distance to the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium as well as the Park at Point Defiance. Point Defiance also has numerous hiking trails to explore. You can walk to the Ferry to Vashon Island and walk to Point Ruston with a ton of restaurants, a gym, spa, and the new Movie Theater right on the water front. By the way, let's not forget the Tacoma Dome, The Convention Center and downtown Tacoma. In addition, to the nearby Safeway and shopping areas, the Metropolitan Market is a specialty market slocated in the nearby Proctor area. The market has a variety of wines, cheeses and prepared gourmet food that is oh so wonderful.
if you are not driving, it must be noted that there is a wonderful public transportation system in the area as well as numerous UBER's and LYFTs.

The condo was very comfortable for my husband and I. It had all the essentials, lovely decor and in a great location for our family visit. The condo is spotless upon arrival; and I've been so impressed with the attention to details with the condo- k-cups for the coffee pot, all the small appliances needed for cooking, snacks and teas available, lovely toiletries and small necessities available in the bathroom. Jenell is excellent with communication and checks in to make sure you have everything you need.The condo is minutes from where my son and his family live, in the North End of Tacoma. It is also minutes walking down to the water and some great little spots to eat and drink- The Spar, Currans Coffee and Anthem Coffee.
