- "The cabin was exactly like it is described. The public access lake is very small, but it's perfect for a quick swim or watching the sunrise/sunset. It is a short walk from the cabin, and it is a very quiet beach. Also, the street is a very quiet street, which was nice because we brought our dog. The cabin is close to downtown, close to lots of tourist attractions, and close to bigger public beaches. It's in a perfect spot because it is in a quiet area, but you can get to a busy area quickly. - "Thankful to find this spot and be able to enjoy it with friends. We rented all 3 cabins and we stayed for a long weekend with 3 families (6 adults and 8 kids) in July. The setup was great and close walking distance to the public access beach that was never very busy. The common yard area is large with plenty of room for the kids to run around. We also brought hammocks that we hung from trees. This cabin had 2 bedrooms, one with a trundle bed and one with a full size bed which had enough room on the side to fit our pack-n-play. To top it off, Mark is super friendly and is there to help if you need anything. We are hoping to stay another weekend next summer!! The only complaint I had about our cabin was that the coffee pot took a really long time and all the water would stay up top in the filter instead of emptying into the coffee pot. Possibly due to the wrong size coffee pot?"

This lovely century-old log cabin combines ambiance, location, unparalleled sunset views, and modern amenities into an authentic “Up North” vacation experience. The cottage is on a bluff overlooking Grand Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan, with 200 feet of private shoreline below. Spacious, comfortable, well-appointed rooms retain the original charm of an earlier era while providing the features and conveniences you seek for optimal relaxation. While private and peaceful, the central location (about 10 miles south of Charlevoix) is also the gateway to dozens of recreational opportunities and adventures throughout the region. Petoskey/Harbor Springs, Traverse City, Boyne Falls, the Leelanau Peninsula, and the Mackinac Bridge are all an hour—or less—away. The true heart of Northern Michigan is waiting for your visit!
TAKE A WALK THROUGH THE COTTAGE
A cozy bedroom is found on the main level with an adjoining bath and laundry, which gives a sleeping space apart from the upstairs loft bedroom with another adjacent half bath. If you still need to stay connected with work, there are two great desk areas in the loft to accommodate that, along with another sleeping nook with a twin bed – perfect for extra guest space or an afternoon nap. If that’s not the space for you, the sitting room at the end of the cottage offers a chase and recliner, perfect for your easel, parchment, or a great book. Put a puzzle together in front of the west window; the romance of the lake in front of you is breathtaking. Birches and cedars add depth to the quiet waters of the sunset or a cushion from the roiling daytime surf. As a bonus, this room can be cordoned off with newly installed barn rail doors, giving you complete solitude. Peace abounds if that is your goal.
Embrace the charm of lake living! While the cottage does not have air conditioning, you’ll find fans throughout the home and screened windows that invite in refreshing lake breezes, helping keep the space cool and airy during the warmer months.
OUTDOOR AMENITIES
The backyard overlooks the lake and has a picnic table and charcoal grill. Grilling tools, skewers, and grill cleaners/wire brushes are provided. There’s also a seating area around a firepit for use in light/calm winds.
ABOUT THE PRIVATE LAKEFRONT
Shallow water extends outward from the beach at least 100 feet, but the bottom is stony—water shoes make exploring much easier. Bring or rent kayaks for paddles along the shoreline, where you may just spot an eagle. The Big Lake is a magnificent freshwater treasure, but can also be unpredictable; always pay attention to the waves and the skies when venturing into the water. There are also two small (township) beachfront parks within a couple minutes drive (easily within biking distance, too), or you can lounge on the cabin’s 200 feet of private shoreline. Sand chairs, a beach umbrella, and a few float toys are provided.
LOCATION
US-31 is the main highway access, the road that takes you south to Elk Rapids/Traverse City and north to Charlevoix/Petoskey (and beyond!). The residential road to the cabin is known for its scenic beauty, where you’ll want to take many gorgeous walks. Farm markets, fruit stands, orchards, wineries, and casual or fine dining are all minutes away. But do not be shocked or bedeviled if you decide never to leave the cabin where the birds dance among the cedars.
**IMPORTANT: Please use only the natural landscapedpath to access the lakefront; do not attempt to climbdown the hillside in any other areas.

- "It was an absolute delight to stay at this beautiful log cabin on Lake Michigan. The house has a lot of character and a truly serene view of the lake. It was so nice to open the windows, let the cool breeze come through, and listen to the waves. It made for excellent sleeping conditions, even in the upstairs bedroom without A/C. Our 5 week old even slept through the whole night! The house is also conveniently located just a few mins from Biers and Lost Cellars, and 15 mins from downtown Charlevoix. There’s plenty to do in the area, but I wish we had stayed several more days just to enjoy the home."

(*** Exciting information at the end of this description as to how you can extend your group size from 15 to 21 guests.)
Are you looking for a real Up North experience? It does not get more authentic than a 3625 square foot log cabin in the middle of gorgeous, rolling hills, on 20 wooded acres in Charlevoix. Abbeys Up North is where it is at, and Xanadu is the name of the Log Cabin! Even though we call Xanadu a log cabin, with 5 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, two living rooms, two kitchens (so families can share helping in preparing food for the masses!), a huge loft, this home sleeps up to 15 with gracious space to spare. During the summer season, we also have a Queen Size bed on the back screened in porch (not listed as an additional sleeping area - it is just a bonus bed in case someone wants to sleep outside in the Up North fresh air!)
Always hopeful that the weather will cooperate for your holiday, but if it storms, this log home has 1700' of screened in wrap around metal roof porch meaning even a rainy day can bring magic. Imagine sitting on one of the two porch swings (big and soft enough to nap on) facing each other, while the screened in porch shelters you, and the rain thrums overhead. Off in the horizon, can you picture lightning lighting up the edge of the tree line, while thunder booms over the nearby lakes? Right up there with waves rolling to shore, I love the sound of the rain falling on a metal roof!
Bring your boat, bring your trailers; our huge driveway and yard can accommodate your toys. Speaking of toys, we have board games and books for kiddos of all ages, so the whole family can sprawl companionably around the huge hearth in the living room. We’ll even provide the first load of wood for the fireplace. And there is the loft that also has a TV and a table to play games on that the kids for sure will love to escape to!
If you’d like to spend more time outside, there are 2 fire pits. One of them is overlooking the 40-year-old Evergreen Trees and woods that you can take a walk in and gather up fallen limbs and twigs for that marshmallow roast. The other one is located on the other side of the yard next to the small barn shaped shed.
Keep your eyes open for deer at sunset. You might also see fireflies, turkeys, eagles, fox and pheasant. Or if you’re really lucky, lounge out under the sky and watch for falling stars or better yet, the Northern Lights!
Barbeque dinner for your family on the charcoal grill, loll in the hammock under the pines, or relax in your private hot tub. You may even check out the locally famous, historic “Pappy” Haggerty family two-holer outhouse in the center of the back yard, (surrounded by rhubarb and lilacs) but we do hope you don’t actually use it. The outhouse, that is. By the way, rhubarb makes excellent pies so if in season, don't forget to bring grandma's rhubarb pie recipe!
Because we understand wanting to share an experience like this with as many of your loved ones as possible, we encourage you to bring your furry faced baby. Heck, they’re family, too, right?
And let's not forget to talk about the size of this Log Home. The home itself has 3625 square foot interior space with that 1700' of wrap around screened in porches and 800' of open decks. That is right. You get this ENTIRE HOME, your own personal Hot Tub, your very own private Fire pit to roast marshmallows and an entire 20 acres that you can spread out on.
As you look at the pictures you will note that the first floor is decorated distinctly different from the rest of the log home. I used to live in this wonderful home and when I designed it, I intentionally made sure that I had an area set aside for my mother so, if necessary, she could come live with me. Making sure that she would have her own outside entrance yet also having an interior set of stairs allowing us to move freely between her apartment and my home would still give her a feeling of independence while providing her with the assurance that I was close by if needed! Regrettably my mother never had an opportunity to live with me in the ground floor apartment. But the upside is that this pretty pink vacant apartment was the impetus for me to get into the Vacation Rental business. And so began Abbeys Up North! :-)
We are located less than ten minutes away from downtown Charlevoix, 25 minutes to Petoskey and about 30 minutes from Boyne Mountain. There are publicly accessible boat launches on all the lakes, and a nearly endless list of beaches and parks. At your doorstep, you’ll find the Little Traverse Wheelway, recognized as one of the most beautifully paved bike paths in Michigan. The 23-mile Wheelway provides cyclists, inline skaters, walkers and joggers with a smooth path, incredible scenery and a safe, non-motorized link between three of the most popular resort towns in northern Michigan, Charlevoix, Petoskey and Harbor Springs.
We hope you have a fantastic and memorable time staying at Xanadu. Our family has been making memories here for three generations, and we’re so glad to offer you the opportunity to do the same.
If heading north as you are truly anticipating experiencing that real "UP NORTH" feel, Xanadu will not disappoint. It has all of the natural beauty of the vast wooded hills and rolling meadows that only 20 acres in Charlevoix the Beautiful can offer. Welcome to Abbeys Up North!
***HEADS UP. For the summer season, (May through October), we will have another apartment to Abbeys up North for a small additional charge. It is a complete 2nd floor apartment with an upper deck, another screened in hot tub, kitchen (so now a 3rd kitchen for families to help in preparing meals for the masses!!!), 1 full bath, 2 bedrooms both with Queen size beds and a pull out couch with a queen size bed sleeping a total of 6 guests. This unit is located above the huge 5 car garage expanding Xanadu's 3625' foot by another 1000 square ft bringing the total living space of Xanadu to 4625' ft. With this apartment, Abbeys will be able to accommodate a total of 21 guests in 7 bedrooms, and 4 1/2 baths! At the end of the pictures I have included some photos showing this unit. They will be titled Captain's Quarters (*CQ).
If you think that this is something that you might be interested in, please get in touch with me and I will be happy to provide the cost of this apartment.
BE ASSURED THAT WHETHER OR NOT YOU RESERVE THE CAPTAINS QUARTERS, OTHER THAN INNKEEPER BIRDIE, YOU AND YOURS WILL HAVE TOTAL PRIVATE USE OF THE PROPERTY.
- "Perfect for a large family of all age group!" - "Our group of 11 (plus 2 dogs) stayed at this cabin during a weekend in July. The check in process was very easy and the cabin felt like a private oasis. The cabin is definitely an older style and some of the doors and screen windows can be sensitive, so make sure to be gentle with them and the porch swings. The open deck, fire pit, and hot tub were great amenities. The hot tub especially was amazing to relax in and worked well. This place is very dog friendly and the dogs had a great time running around in the back yard and woods. There were only very minor issues we dealt with throughout our stay here. I would recommend this to any of my friends or family and would definitely stay here again!"

The quaint town of Charlevoix is about 10-12 minutes away. Charlevoix is located on the shores of Lake Michigan. The bridge in the town raises and lowers every hour to allow for boats to travel back and forth from Lake Michigan to Round Lake which then leads to Lake Charlevoix. A lot of things to do on any of these lakes. East Jordan is another small town nearby, that is also on the shores of Lake Charlevoix. Actually, there are many nice towns with there own identity throughout this northern area of Michigan.
- "We have rented cottages all over Traverse City, Petoskey and Harbor Spring for years and we agree that this was our favorite stay ever. Such a lovely, and well stocked cottage with a spectacular view. We enjoyed kayaking and paddle boating with the local Loon family, spent countless hours on the spacious and private deck, and visited the quaint city of Charlevoix a few times. It was the perfect place to rest and recharge. Aaron is an amazing and thoughtful host. Highly recommend!"

Stay in an authentic log cabin from the 1800’s that's nestled among the 200+ Acres of forest and shoreline of Lake MI, between North Point Nature Preserve & Mt. McSauba Rec. Go off Grid!!! The cabin property (over an acre), has a fire pit, cleared hiking trails throughout and loads of stuff to do all around. The beach is a close walk and is spectacular! There are local bike trails, tennis, golf, (disc & regular), soccer fields, basketball courts, skate park, fishing, hiking, beautiful beaches

Welcome to Toad Junction!
Relax & recharge at this peaceful 2+acre oasis 6 miles from downtown Charlevoix, named one of Travel + Leisure's Best Lake Towns in America. Our 4 BR cottage is on a small private inland lake, perfect for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Lots of outdoor space to play, roast marshmallows, eagle-watch, stargaze or swing on a hammock — & plenty of room inside, too. Nearby day trips include Tunnel of Trees, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Mackinac Island & wineries.
The space
Toad Junction is your escape from the everyday! Relax, refresh, and reinvigorate yourself at your home away from home, a lovely 4 bedroom cottage on 2+ private acres.
The outdoors is right here, with lots of space to spread out and play. East Twin, a quiet inland lake, is great for fishing, frog-catching, kayaking, canoeing, floating and splashing. Picture a large lawn perfect for your family games or a stroll; a garden with a 2 seat glider; multiple hammocks where you can nap, read, chat, or daydream; a wooded area that's perfect for exploring; the firepit is stocked and ready for your campfire (don't forget your s'mores supplies and hot dogs!) and after your day of fun, you can spend a few minutes or a few hours gazing up at the night sky --the constellations and the Milky Way are yours to explore!
Our large deck overlooks the lawn and the lake, and is equipped with a gas grill, a large picnic table and bench seating for the whole group. There are also additional comfortable chairs for reading, watching and hanging out.
If you decide to stay indoors, there are 2 living rooms for your group to hang out in—the "cozy" side of the cottage has a gas fireplace, a small dining table with 3 chairs, armchairs, a loveseat, and 3 stools at the kitchen counter, while the "loud" side sports a 50 inch smart tv (ready for you to log in to your streaming apps), a couch and additional seating, and a dining area with table and chairs for 6-10.
You can cook up a storm in our fully equipped kitchen. We'll even have some staples for you--salt and pepper, basic spices, tea and coffee.
When night falls, you'll have 4 bedrooms (2 queen, 1 queen with twin above, and 1 full) and the pullout couch to rest in.
Bathrooms have been supplied with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, towels and washcloths. All bed linens are also supplied, as well as beach towels.
And since you'll be staying a while, you'll have access to our washer and dryer, complete with laundry soap and dryer sheets.
Guest access
You’ll have access to the whole house and entire property with the exception of the basement and the shed.
Other things to note
There are 2 steps into the cottage from the driveway, and 2 steps from the cottage to the lakeside deck. From the deck to the lawn, there are 7 steps down the front, and a single step off of the side. We are obviously on a little hill!
There is no “upstairs”, but there are 2 steps between the 2 sides of the cottage. There are 2 bedrooms and a bathroom on either side of those steps.

Our incredibly special rustic vacation cottage is directly on the beautiful Lake Charlevoix, with a private beach and dock. We only rent for part of the season and hope that your families can create wonderful memories here too. For over 100 years our family has been coming here, and there are other family cabins along the lake. Enjoy non-stop swimming, lake activities, falling asleep to the sounds of the waves, dinners outside, walks along the beach and more.
The space
The space offers a detached, rustic sleeping porch that is directly on the lake with three queen/ double beds and a full bathroom. Upon exiting, walk through a covered outdoor hallway to enter the living space which has a full kitchen that opens to a dining area and a living room with a couch, sitting area, fireplace and T.V. There is a small mudroom with a washer / dryer and steps to go upstairs with two additional bedrooms, each with their own bathroom. Guests must walk through the first bedroom to access the second bedroom which has a queen bed and private bathroom. The first bedroom also has a queen bed, a full bath and a desk so often is used as an office. All bedrooms have excellent views of the lake.
Outside, there is a beautiful stone patio with a table and chairs and then another deck with two picnic tables for bigger dinners near the dock and a third, private deck with lounge chairs. The sun sets very late (around 10pm) in the summer, so the nights are long and lovely.
There is an outdoor shower on the back of the house that is perfect for warming up after a swim.
Guest access
Guests have full access to the cabin, the private dock, immediate lake access and the beach. In order to get to the house, there is a long driveway, with other cabin access, so we will make sure to provide detailed instructions before arrival!
Other things to note
This is a family compound so our cabin is not appropriate for parties. Please note all other docks (except for the one with this cabin) and associated beaches are private and not available for guests. Please respect quiet hours after 10pm.
While boats are ok, they will need to be brought to the cabin via the lake from the camp seagull public boat launch. Our lane is too windy and hilly and we have no direct path to bring a boat from the driveway (patios in front). Also, boats must be anchored to a buoy as it’s very shallow next to the dock. We usually rent a boat and bring it across the lake.

Welcome to our charming Lake Charlevoix retreat! Walk out the door
- directly located on 100' of private frontage. Nestled on the pristine shores of Lake Charlevoix, this idyllic getaway offers the perfect blend of tranquility and convenience. With just a short drive to the vibrant towns of Charlevoix, Petoskey, and Boyne, you'll have easy access to a number of options. Situated in a prime location, our property boasts breathtaking views of the sparkling waters and captivating sunsets.
The space
There is a dock that has a ladder. No diving off the dock. You cannot tie a boat to the dock. Instead there is a Mooring Anchor for you to moor your boat just off shore.
The shore is perfect for swimming: clear water, sandy bottom.
The space
**IMPORTANT: Historically high lake levels in the early 2020s caused considerable erosion; for this reason, we do not allow climbing the cabin hillside.
