Sea Views at this Grade II Listed Cottage with Baby Grand Piano (Pet Friendly)
Cottage
West Mersea, Essex, United Kingdom

This beautiful Grade II listed cottage built in 1600 boasts all of its original features, so its jam packed with history. At the same time the decor has been updated to allow a fresh, coastal feel but retaining the coziness of a low ceiling-ed, exposed beamed cottage.

If you are above 6ft 3" you will not fit into this cottage as its ceilings in the main living area are very low, but we feel it adds to its charm. The kitchen and master bedroom in contrast are later additions to the house and so have full height ceilings. This is a house that has evolved over the years and has a story to tell if only walls could talk!

With a fully equipped modern kitchen and bathrooms you will not have to suffer the inconveniences of period living but instead get a taste for the life of a fisherman that would have fished on the island hundreds of years ago, with all the modern day comforts!

The house has a large rear garden with beautiful views out towards the estuary and a small jetty where at high tide access can be gained to the water, for watersports. At the front there is a large driveway with parking for several cars.

The house is situated at the end of a long private driveway servicing just 5 houses all tucked away in the "Old City" part of the village also known as The Anchorage due to the Sailing/Yacht Clubs and Chandlers. This means that although the position is very secluded, quiet and peaceful you are never more than a few minutes walk from places to eat the lovely seafood on offer or drink in the local pubs. A few more minutes walk will take you to the centre of the village where you will find everything you need. With a top quality butchers, cafe's, post office, bank, library, shops and supermarkets, it means that once you have arrived, you'll never need to leave the Island again till it's time to go home!

Mersea Island is rapidly growing a reputation as a "foody haven", and just a few moments walk from Crabtree Cottage you will find the famous Company Shed. From this small "shed" by the waters edge you can eat freshly caught seafood moments out of the water. People trek from London to this unpretentious eatery each weekend to experience the fresh seafood on offer, its reputation is spreading so wide. There are plenty of other high quality, again unpretentious venues to eat the local seafood or other foody delights on offer, all accessed just a few minutes walk directly from the house. No need to take the car, just walk and have as many drinks as you like! Maybe sample each of the Mersea Island Breweries beers or Mersea Vineyard wines!

Please Note:-
- Upstairs there are two linked bedrooms, and no bathrooms, as these are all on the ground floor.
- Being a very old and quirky cottage the staircase to the upper floor is quite awkward for anyone with mobility issues.

Guest Reviews:

- "Another lovely week. Best cottage in the best location. Don’t go changing anything!" - "A lovely old property - very comfortable with a well equiped kitchen etc and a large attractive garden with beautiful views. Good walks and great pubs" - "We have had a wonderful stay here. Both parents (in their 80’s) absolutely loved it and to my surprise too, two boys aged 12 did too. My elderly dad enjoyed playing the piano - even bought music with him to play. Enough space for the boys to run around, and a terrace for my parents to sit and enjoy the sun and view. It turned out to be the perfect getaway for everyone. We’ve loved it!! We’ve reminisced, and made new memories too. 😊. Exactly how it should be."

- "We (my husband and I and our 17 year old son) spent 10 days at the cottage in July 2023. The cottage is centrally located and close to the beach, restaurants, cafes and grocery stores. We highly recommend the Art Cafe for breakfast and lunch (call to reserve a table as they get busy) and the Coast Inn that overlooks the water for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Both are within walking distance of the cottage. The cottage itself it absolutely lovely and comes with everything you need for your stay. As mentioned in the listing this is a small cottage with tricky stairs so although it was perfect for us it may not be suitable for the elderly or people with little kiddos. We will definitely stay here again as we loved every minute of it."

Beautiful period fisherman's cottage
Cottage
West Mersea, England, United Kingdom

Anchor cottage is a delightful period Grade 2 listed, three-bedroom cottage situated in the heart of The Anchorage, once known as Mersea City. It was built circa 1575, and is the largest of three terraced fishermen's cottages, nestling alongside other period buildings in The Lane, and next to a very small chapel.

It has three bedrooms, a large double, a twin room and a ground floor single bedroom. The bathroom is also on the ground floor.

A large sitting/dining room provides plenty of space for five people indoors and there is also a lovely sheltered patio, with summer house, for alfresco dining.

Please note, being a 'period' property there are some low ceilings, some with beams, some low door heights and the stairs are quite steep too.

There is a private garden with BBQ area that enjoys the sun at most times of the day.

The Lane is a popular local walk with little traffic so lots of peace and quiet.

Being only 150 metres from the water's edge it provides ideal access to the water for paddle-boarding, kayaking, crabbing and swimming. Most of the island's bars and restaurants are situated in the anchorage so it's only a short walk to find food and drink hospitality. Well behaved dogs are welcome.

Guest Reviews:

- "Perfect cottage everything we could want, warm and cosy . Welcomed with a bottle of bubbly for the occasion . " - "i" - "This is such a lovely place to stay - really good value, excellently equipped, private with a neat garden (photos don’t do it justice), and good communication with the owner plus a parking spot in a place where this is at a premium. It is also so beautifully quiet. Mersea island is well connected - not far from Constable country, the ancient town of Colchester, the salt marshes of Tollesbury, and the ancient chapel of St Peter on the wall at Bradwell on sea. Plus you can get to Maldon easily and it’s near London. It’s possible to walk all round the island and the shellfish from The Company shed and Dukes was fresh and delicious. The house represents great value and is located in the prettiest part of West Mersea on the prettiest road near the bustling seafront. A magical find in an area bristling with Anglo Saxon and Viking history."

Mersea Island Cottage by the beach and coast.
Cottage
West Mersea, Essex, England, United Kingdom

A top location - with the beach and waterside just across from the cottage, and views towards the waterside from both bedrooms. Lovely local food shops and excellent seafood restaurants like The Company Shed just a short stroll away along the waterfront. Parking at the property and wifi is free.

There are two bedrooms a good size double bedroom and a twin with two beds (2'6" wide single beds suitable for children and most adults ). The family bathroom is downstairs with a fully equipped kitchen and dining room area. The sitting room includes a TV with Netflix and BBC iPlayer. As this is an old, original cottage built in 1750 the stairs are a little steep and can be difficult for those with mobility issues.

Two super sitting out areas - the back terrace with dining table and chairs, off the kitchen, gets sun from morning and the front garden gets the sun from mid morning until sunset. Also a good size garden delightful for relaxing all day.

The kitchen includes a washing machine, cooker with hob, fridge with small freezer and microwave plus all utensils for cooking and eating out on the terrace or indoors.

The island will keep you entertained with superb fish restaurants like The Company Shed, The Dukes (outside only) and Seafood at Dawn; beaches; lots of walks on West Mersea and East Mersea (sometimes a ferry taking you to Brightlingsea); boat trips and watersports (paddleboarding/kayaks etc). Mersea watersports can rent to you paddleboards, kayaks etc. If you want to go further in a car, day trips to Colchester, Maldon, Wivenhoe, Rowhedge and Constable Country are super.

Guest Reviews:

- "A fabulous property, cleaned to a wonderful standard, with everything you would need in the kitchen and holiday home provided. Absolutely loved Mersea, super friendly locals and local restaurants served delicious meals. Even the weather was perfect." - "Fantastic base to explore a beautiful part of the country. The host was very helpful in providing information of things to do in the area and lovely places to eat." - "My best friend and I stayed 10 days at this beautiful cottage. Apart from the narrow stairs leading up to the bedrooms, the cottage was absolutely gorgeous and quaint. The garden was well kept, and beautiful too. It was very quiet and relaxing, just what we needed. And the people on the island were so friendly. DEFINITELY worth staying at, AND it's worth 5 stars. Thanx again to Diane 😊💖"

Bromans Barn a beautiful cottage by the Sea and Cudmore Nature Reserve
Cottage
Mersea Island, Essex, United Kingdom

Great Walks by the Sea and the Nature Reserve, and Interesting Seafood Restaurants.
Bromans Barn is an elegant mix of ecological build and sympathetic historical renovation. The cottage is situated right beside Mersea Islands wonderful Cudmore Nature reserve.

The Experience

On the lovely Mersea Island, Bromans Barn is situated beside a very special Nature Reserve which rolls down to the sea.
It is a romantic self-catering cottage for two with an elegant mix of ecological build and sympathetic historical renovation. The farmhouse dates back to 1320 and was once one of the major farmhouses on the island.

This is a creative conversion of an old barn; impressively spacious but also very cosy and relaxing. Thesun streams in through the many windows and in the evenings there is a lovely cosy wood burning stove to enjoy.

The owners welcome guests to this lovely cottage with a bottle of wine and biscuits.

Cottage Walk Through

At the end of the pretty courtyard of the historic Bromans farmhouse sits the lovely Bromans Barn, in front of it is a shingle patio partially shaded by the branches of an old tree offering shade to guests enjoying an evening drink and of course the odd free range chicken dozing in the suntrap.

You enter this old barn through double French Doors straight into the main room with its traditional Suffolk White brick floor extending throughout the cottage.

The high arched ceiling and ancient beams give this place an airy feeling and the cleverly designed lowered ceiling areas draw you into the cosy sitting area with the big Wood burning stove and comfy sofa and the kitchen area.

Bromans Barn is all on one floor and has a very large wet room, it is ideal for guests who have limited mobility. Please call us to discuss this further.

There is a very well equipped kitchen and dining table at the far end of the room and a wide curtained entrance to the bedroom at the other end.

Please note that this cottage cannot accept babies or children - sorry

Pets: We can accept up to 2 well behaved doggies in this cottage (no cats – sorry), the price is £25 pw per dog or £15 for less than a week – this payment can be taken after booking, if not possible online.

The Gardens

There are two patio areas immediately outside the cottage with tables, chairs and deckchairs for guests to sit and enjoy this historic farm.

Outside

This beautiful Essex holiday cottage is right beside Mersea Islands famous Cudmore Nature Reserve.Bromans will suit guests who enjoy a good walk, the seaside, and some really good and unusual seafood restaurants.

This is an excellent place to enjoy the rich wildlife that Mersea Island offers, from the comfort of a romantic barn conversion on a lovely old farm; it is just a short stroll through the adjacent Nature Reserve to the beach.

As this is a pet friendly cottage you can really exhaust a dog with walks straight from the cottage.

There are special walks laid out where you can enjoy the beautyof the salt marshes where seals bask. You become very aware of the ever changing relationship between sky, marsh and sea as you wander along these coastal paths.

Bromans Barn has a special appeal - not only is it next to this famous country park but also just minutes’ walk from the sea and the Pyefleet Estuary.

Mersea Island is well known for its oyster beds and wonderful harbour side restaurants like 'The Company Shed'. If you decide to check this one out remember to get there at least an hour or two before lunch time - you'll see why when you get issued with a ticket in the big queue – and it really is just a shed, and yes you have to bring your own bread and wine ! But all the famous chefs have been there.

Take a ferry trip from Cudmore Park landing stage to Brightlingsea across the estuary, which is rather fun - great fish and chips there too.

Green Credentials

Bromans Barn is very eco-friendly – it has sheep’s wool insulation and a ground heat source pump supplying hot water and under floor heating - it also has organic vegetable and herb beds for guests to freely use.

The Barn has been renovated using many reclaimed and locally sourced materials, the work carried out by expert craftsmen specialising in Historic renovation and ecological builds.

There is a wealth of wildlife and flora that has resulted in the Nature Reserve being created to protect it and with the sea shore just a few hundred meters away there are some special walks along the coast to enjoy seeing seals and picking up fossils.

In the fields around the farm you may catch sight of the hares and badgers and if you're lucky, red squirrels, along with some wonderful birdlife.

East Mersea is a recognised stopping point for many of the migratory birds coming to the UK over the different seasons.Read more about Mersea Island.

This architectural gem is a testament to creativity and innovation, providing breathtaking panoramic views that stretch across the lush, undulating landscape. This upside-down house ensures that the primary living spaces, including the kitchen, dining area, and lounge, are located on the upper floor. This clever arrangement not only maximizes the potential for stunning vistas but also enhances the overall sense of space and openness. The upper floor features French doors opening onto a large sitting-out area where the countryside unfolds before you, a patchwork of fields, meadows, and hedgerows.

From sunrise to sunset, the changing colours of the sky paint a dynamic backdrop, making every moment in this house a visual feast. The open-plan living area is flooded with natural light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that complements the beauty outside. Descending to the lower floor, you find the two bedrooms, each offering a private retreat with its unique view. The master bedroom, generously proportioned and tastefully decorated, opens up to a private patio. Imagine waking up to the gentle sounds of nature, stepping outside, and being greeted by the crisp morning air and the unspoiled beauty. If you do not fancy cooking then a short stroll along the road takes you to a popular pub and restaurant. Mersea Island gets cut off for about an hour when there is a very high tide, usually once a month, so it’s worthwhile checking the tides, all adding to the uniqueness and charm. It is a beautiful island with lots of coastal and nature walks, seafood restaurants with the famous Mersea oysters, delis, takeaways, supermarkets and child-friendly pubs with craft beer.

Why not visit Mersea Island vineyard and brewery where a beer festival is held at Easter and you can buy real ale, wines and even Mersea Island gin? The Mersea Regatta, which has been running since 1838, is held every August and should not be missed. There is a variety of rowing races, an outboard motor balloon race, a swimming race and ‘walking The Greasy Pole’ and ends in a firework display in the evening. Just a bit further the popular seaside towns of Clacton, Frinton and Walton are great for a traditional day at the seaside, with amusements on the pier and lovely walks along the sea wall. For more traditional seaside fun with amusements and candy floss then Southend on Seas or Clacton is ideal. A short distance away is Colchester with its array of shops, restaurants, castle, museum and zoo. Rose Cottage offers the perfect romantic retreat or family break.

- "The house in Point Clear Bay is exactly as described. We booked for a family of 6 (2 kids and 2 grandparents) and they all loved the location. Sitting outside by the large doors overlooking the sea was fantastic. The sunset and moon views were great and it was very relaxing watching the tides change. The house is very well equipped with notes, guides, amenities and welcome basket of goodies. I can recommend crabbing by the sea when the tide is almost high, and a walk around the peninsula. Local beaches were nice at Frinton. One small point is that the road to the house is a bit of a mess and needs to be taken slowly. So be careful!"

- "North Farm Lodge was an idyllic spot for a Christmas break. It’s peaceful and isolated and we had a wonderfully relaxing holiday. The lodge is spacious, warm, well equipped and quiet, and we had everything we needed, and Christmas decorations and some useful and tasty goodies, which Andrea and Mat had left us. Mersea Island is a joy - friendly, attractive, with lots of walks, plenty of good pubs and the sea ever present. You do need a vehicle, and the lodge has good private parking. The only drawback -or perhaps bonus - is that the island is cut off at high tide, so you do need to know the low tide times when you arrive or leave. All in all a 5* experience. Many thanks."
