- "Came for a fishing tournament on elk lake. Wives met us at the cabin . We all had a great weekend " - "My son and his girlfriend wanted to get away for a weekend and they asked me to plan a trip. Although I was born and raised in Michigan, I hadn't spent much time in this area of Michigan, After much searching, I found this cabin that seemed to meet our needs. The weekend we chose happened to be an unusually chilly and windy weekend and we are glad this cabin had heat (not advertised on VRBO). There are 4 cabins that are situated right on Thayer Lake. The area does have a large number of residences, but the cabins still felt isolated. The cabins are located between Alden and Bellaire so access to stores and restaurants was easy. The cabin itself was cozy with everything we needed for a weekend. It was very clean and the beds were extremely comfortable. The cabins seemed fairly new or recently remodeled. The size of the cabin was perfect for 4 adults. Although we didn't use them, there were a number of row boats and kayaks that seemed to be available for guests. We saw deer in the mornings and evenings. The host did supply a folder with the wifi password as well as recommendations for activities and restaurants. Each cabin had a firepit available. We never interacted with the host, but I believe that we did see and host and waved as we drove into the cabin. The only constructive feedback I would provide is that if I would have stayed here longer than a weekend, I would have liked a little more cookware to be able to make meals in the cabin. "

Torch Lake has long been one of the most sort after “Up North” destinations.
Our 1920 cottage has been loved by our family since 2004
The cottage has four bedrooms, arranged as 1 king and 3 queens comfortably sleeping 8 people.
The Carriage House sleeps up to 6 extra people
The 2 bedroom 1 bathroom Carriage House is available upon request if extra sleeping arrangements are needed and only available to the family renting the main cottage.
Each bedroom has 1 queen and 1 Twin bed. There is a kitchenette with a microwave/airfryer, fridge and dishwasher
The Carriage House would be an additional charge to the cottage and starts at $295-$520 per night depending on the season.
The cottage is on the east side facing west, therefore we enjoy amazing sunsets every evening. We have 180ft of lake frontage and a dock.
There is a buoy in front of our cottage for your boat if you decide to bring your own or rent one.
The lake has easy access for boating all around Torch and interconnecting Elk Lake and Lake Bellaire.
Shanty Creek is 15 minutes away and great for skiing, snowboarding and tubing.
Boyne Mountain Resort is 45 minutes away and is excellent for skiing in the winter, golf in the summer and Avalanche Bay water park.
Traverse City is about 35 minutes away with great shopping, bars and restaurants.
For those that prefer a more leisurely pace Alden is a short walk from our cottage down a private pathway into town, where there could be a great coffee waiting for you at the Muffin Tin, quaint antique and gift shops, the not to be missed Higgins Store famous for its ice creams and The Mill House which has all your kitchen spices needed for grilling at sunset on the cottage deck.
The cottage is available for weekly rental Saturday to Saturday in the summer months, long weekends and longer stays at other times all year round.
In the winter you could be snuggled in front of the fireplace watching a movie or talking about the fun you've had on the ski slopes
Or
In the summer you could find yourself sitting by the fire pit watching the sun go down over beautiful Torch Lake.

Located on breathtakingly beautiful Torch Lake, this non-smoking property has been owned by the same family since the late 1800's. The cottage features natural wood interiors, two wood burning fireplaces, shelves of books, gorgeous views of the lake, coziness, and simplicity.
Equally suitable for families with young children or older couples, it comfortably sleeps six people in the cottage plus four more in the Guest House.
We have 150 feet of lakefront, including a sandy beach, a private dock, boat hoist, and mooring buoy. The lake's sandy bottom is shallow for a fair distance, making it ideal for children and adults.
The cottage sits at the end of a private road in a secluded setting thick with mature trees. Its location on the east side of the lake affords spectacular views of the setting sun, especially from the large open air deck which overlooks the lake, and the near-constant lull of water lapping at the shore. There is also a smaller private deck, complete with a hammock swing (one of several on the property), off the master suite.
Note: all three bathrooms were completely renovated in 2021!
TORCH LAKE was named the third most beautiful lake in the world by National Geographic Magazine. The water is so clear you can see the sandy bottom all the way out to the 'drop-off.' On sunny days, the lake has ribbons of turquoise color that are reminiscent of the Caribbean. Torch is the largest lake in Michigan (19 miles long and about two miles wide) and is part of a chain of lakes which allows boating from Elk Rapids to Bellaire. For a good overview and some great pictures, you can look up the article "Torch Lake is Michigan's own slice of the Caribbean."
A 15-minute stroll takes you to the small and charming village of ALDEN. It has one of Torch Lake's four public boat ramps, a number of restaurants (both casual and fine cuisine), art galleries, a variety of shops, a playground, a public tennis court, and a library. Green woods and broad fields extend out from the town, offering great cycling and walking.
Popular tourist destinations such as Traverse City, Charlevoix, the Leelanau Peninsula, and Petoskey are all within an hour's drive. Should you choose to venture further afield, Interlochen National Music Camp (offering excellent concerts), Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, Mackinac Island, or Hartwick Pines are well worth visiting.
Because the cottage is a family heirloom, we request great care and consideration from our renters. We also ask that you be very respectful of our neighbors – the cottage is in a residential (not rental) area. For that reason, we don't allow jet skis in order to preserve the peace. Thank you for your understanding!
Note that we also own the cottage next door (VRBO #2452978, built by my grandmother's brother). You could consider that cottage if this one is already booked or, if you have a very large group, you might combine the rentals – a "family compound" that could accommodate up to 20 people.

- "We were a group of two families with four teenagers (14-17) and a child under 10; we all enjoyed every minute of our stay. Nan is highly responsive to any issue and the property is lovely in a great location on the lake. We spent the vast majority of our time on the lake, beach or deck. The cabin gave the teen girls a place to stay with more independence and their own bathroom. At the end of our vacation, all the teenagers told us they want to come back because there was so much to do. If you are on the fence, book it; you'll really enjoy your stay."

- "Our Son and his family went camping across the street from our cottage at Barnes park camp grounds. Great family trip. Our cottage was great! Definitely my kind of camping. Very nice cottage. Would stay again and recommend it to friends and others." - "Our stay was just what we needed. We felt like we were home, but away from home with all its responsibilities. The cottage was very clean. The bed was super comfortable. The kitchen was supplied with everything we needed to make meals if we wanted to. We enjoyed going to both the beautiful Torch Lake and Lake Michigan, both walking distance from the cottage. It was altogether a perfect get away for us. Although we didn’t need to call Jeff, our host, we knew he was available for any of our questions. We will definitely tell others about this opportunity."

* The cottage is "Up North" and there may be swans, other waterfowl, and/or wildlife present at the property during your stay. Please respect them, don’t feed them and stay a safe distance.
*The lake is very weedy and not conducive to swimming at this location. There are public beaches within a few miles. Gas fireplace is not available for guest use.
- "House provided us with everything we needed. Only thing we had to bring was food, toiletries, and clothes. Easy to find and property manager was easy to get into contact with. Nice time spending with friends and was a great place to just hang out at." - "This was our second time staying at the property and, again, it did not disappoint. Adorable, clean and well stocked cottage. Clam like is a perfect calm lake to dock the boat while being a fast cruise into torch lake. - "We enjoyed our stay on Clam Lake! The beds were very comfortable, including the couch bed. The house was clean. The owner communicated with us throughout our stay when necessary. The only bummer was we couldn’t use the dock. We brought our boat (with a deep v hull) and were not able to use the boat dock due to low water levels. The dock would probably be okay for a pontoon boat or similar. You might want to scout out ramps when you get there as some are better than others. Most ramps have very little parking nearby so go early to launch! We enjoyed going to dockside, shorts brewing and torch lake beer company. We had a fantastic time at the sandbar on lake torch. Beautiful lakes! Being right on clam lake was very relaxing."

- "Donna was so easy to communicate with, quick to respond to my many questions. Cottages were quaint and stocked with everything one would need for a wonderful week on Torch Lake with extended family. The property itself is stunning with beautiful gardens, waterfall, amazing sunsets from the top of property. Down the hill is play set, hot tub and tennis court. It has a small beach area which was shallow enough for grandkids and the water is crystal clear. We rented a pontoon boat all week from Dockside Water Sports and visited the sandbar which was amazing. It really seemed we were somewhere in the Caribbean as the water had so many shades of blue. Hoping to return someday, Torch Lake is certainly a gem! Thanks again to the Green’s for sharing their cottages with us. Marianne"

My grandmother's brother built this cottage in 1910 - and he got a prime lakefront location. Now with updated bathrooms and refinished wood floors the interior provides up-north cottage charm alongside all the modern amenities.
Everyone's favorite place to spend time indoors seems to be the screened-in porch which opens to the lake and shoreline on 3 sides. Here you can settle down in a comfy chair to enjoy Torch’s famous “Caribbean blue” stripes chase across the lake, or sip an evening glass of wine and watch the sunset pour molten light into the water.
The large living room with its central stone hearth is a great spot to gather around a fire on a cooler evening or around the TV on a rainy day. Bedrooms are cozy and simple, with 2 queens, 1 set of twins, and 1 double-single bunk and classic cottage antiques. The property features a dock, a firepit by the lake, a lakeside patio with chairs and an umbrella table, and another patio with a grill off the kitchen.
This is not a party spot, but it would be great for families or groups of adults seeking a relaxing getaway. Nestled in among majestic trees and private cottages, the location offers privacy and quiet. Sandy shallows extend for dozens of yards off the rocky shoreline; we also have a dock a mooring buoy for your motorboat or pontoon boat. (Jet-skis are not allowed.)
The charming town of Alden, with boutiques, dining, and public tennis courts and playground, is a 1/2-mile walk away. Nature preserves and well-maintained roads throughout the area also provide beautiful hiking and biking.
Note that we also own the cottage next door (VRBO #37825, built by my grandmother). You could consider that cottage if this one is already booked or, if you have a very large group, consider combining the rentals – a "family compound" that could accommodate up to 20 people.
- "Wonderful stay in a Torch Lake cabin that was so much more than anticipated. Hidden away off the main road , every room had lake views from big windows, sitting standing or laying down you could see the lake. spacious rooms bigger than expected The porch was THE place to be. Windows galore, with unobstructed views, and great seating or you could be outside on the water deck lounging in chairs. I had planned to visit lots of local lakes , I did very little because I had all I needed right here . Kayaked or walked to lovely Alden village , total relaxation, with a bonus of nighty sunsets. An extra was that it was not like a property bought just to rent, they obviously stay here and leave everything they need , for guests to use , from books, spices, printers , lots of cookware, kayak and more . Very responsive to my questions about restaurants in the area. I like adventures and don’t usually go to the same place twice ,I would come back to this cabin for sure and already looking at availability for next year. this would be an excellent location for a company retreat renting this home along with the property next door."

Great location, walk out front doors on to your private beach. " - "Disappointing Stay – Would Not RecommendThis property is extremely outdated — think old Red Roof Inn vibes. The fridge barely gets cold, and overall, the home is in desperate need of updates. One of the biggest issues was the owner's lack of respect for privacy. He showed up multiple times unannounced, even coming inside the house to take out the trash. That felt like a major violation of personal space. We booked this property mainly for the “private beachfront,” but it was covered in goose droppings, and 3 out of 8 people in our group ended up with extreme swimmer’s itch after going in the water. Definitely not the relaxing beach experience we were hoping for.The dock is also misleading — it is not suitable for docking a boat, something we wish had been clearly stated in the listing. On top of that, the property was crawling with spiders, inside and out, which made the stay feel even more uncomfortable.Take your money elsewhere. This place is not worth the price, and the constant pop-ins from the owner were the final straw."

Neighborhood is nice and quiet - a few streets off the "busy" main road
Great for morning or afternoon walks with the group
Other things to note
- Look out at the Natural Preserve across the lake from our spot - completely unobstructed views- very quiet but if you want action, you can take a boat to Torch from our place and join the party at the Sand bar or park the boat and eat at Dockside. Fish along the Clam River.
- "We had the best family vacation with our 5 kids and 2 grandparents. House fit us well and was perfect for our needs. Large property so kids can play but still not have to worry about them running off to the water alone. My youngest enjoyed the toys at the house and older children enjoyed all of the board games. The lake was beautiful and calm. We rented a tritoon from Dockside, which I would highly recommend. We were able to dock at the house which was so convenient. We enjoyed boating on Clam Lake and Torch Lake and visiting the Sandbar on Torch. The shed had all the toys you would need to enjoy Clam Lake, my boys all went kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and Paddle boating. Clam lake is calm and not too busy especially early in the morning and in the evening so I wasn't worried about my boys while they were kayaking across the lake to enjoy the wildlife. While vacationing we also visited Sleeping Bear Dunes, Pierce Stocking scenic drive, Moomers Ice cream and went Cherry Picking at Kings Orchard. Traverse City is also a great place to visit but we just didn't have enough time to do it all. We love vacationing in Northern Michigan and can't recommend this property enough. Janessa and Tim were wonderful hosts, the house had everything you could want and they were very responsive to questions about the property and surrounding area."

- "We recently spent an unforgettable long weekend at this charming lake cottage on Torch Lake, and it exceeded all our expectations! From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the stunning views and the warm, welcoming atmosphere of the cottage. The interior was cozy and beautifully decorated, providing plenty of space for our family to relax and enjoy each other’s company. One of the highlights of our stay was the firepit. We used it to warm the cool fall air while we enjoyed our coffee with a great view of the lake. The cottage was equipped with everything we needed, from a well-stocked kitchen to cozy bedding. It felt like a home away from home, and we appreciated the thoughtful touches that made our stay even more enjoyable. Overall, our family getaway at the Torch Lake cottage was a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. We left with cherished memories."

- "We had a nice stay at this cabin, as it fit our needs well. It was nice to have bunks with a double bed in one room for kids, and a queen size bed in the other bedroom. The porch and deck were very nice to view the surroundings and we ate on the deck using the nice table most nights. The public access to the lake was very close and the fire ring out in the yard was perfect for night-time campfires and s’mores, with it slightly cool in the evenings. We liked this cabin home very much."

- "Fantastic spot" - "Wonderful stay for our family with 2 younger children. Easy lake access with dock and mooring ball worked perfectly with our pontoon boat. Shallow with sandy bottom quite a ways out which worked out great for the kids. Only steps to Alden with couple nice spots to eat and shops. Rental provided all we needed and host was super responsive/helpful." - "We stayed here during the long weekend for the 4th of July. It was a great weekend. The weather was a little dicey at times but this cottage is VERY nice, on the water, and a 2 minute walk to all that Alden’s downtown has to offer. Probably the nicest rental property in the area."

- "The lake location and the gorgeous surroundings were outstanding; off-scale really. Perhaps one of the nicest places we have ever stayed. We spend most of our time , either at the beach or the tennis court, cooked on the outdoor bbq grille, made some evening fire camps by the lake front. The owners are nearby, they are relaxed and very friendly. The cabin itself is fairly modest; it was fine for us because the weather was great and we spent 99% of our time outside. If we had to stay inside for many days, that would be a little tight with the kids."

Welcome to one of the first cottages to have built on Torch Lake. This is a quintessential up north Cottage, large main living room with the master bedroom and second bedroom with a queen bed on the Lake side of the house. The third bedroom is a smaller room with bunk beds and the 4th bedroom is a smaller room with a single twin bed in it.
This is one of the few locations on all of Torch Lake that has a beautiful sandy beach with a very gradual slope into the water. At the end of the dock the water is only 2.5 - 3 feet deep. There will be a mooring ball in front of the cottage that you can keep a boat on. There is a shared laundry room with our other house next door that could be used in emergency but is technically not part of this cottage.
Cottage come with Linens/towels and an almost full kitchen. The reason I saw "almost" is there is no disposal and the dishwasher is a small countertop dishwasher that can handle about half of a normal load.
We do allow dogs here and the back yard is fully fenced in, however the fenced in area goes around both of our cottages making it somewhat of a shared space.
For those looking to stay in the shoulder seasons the cottage there is base board heat for the the main living room and two bedrooms with queen beds, the other bedrooms have small portable electric heaters. There is no central AC, but there is the possibility for a small window A/C unit but I would only consider putting it in for a medical need. The hoist at the end of the dock is not part of the rental and is used to store my boat, and I will occasionally be using the dock to access the boat.
VERY IMPORTANT - DUE TO SEVERAL RENTERS IN THE PAST NOT RESPECTING OUR NO SMOKING POLICY - WE NOW HAVE A ZERO TOLERANCE FOR SMOKING OF ANY KNID ANYWHERE ON THE PROPERTY - INCLUDING ON THE BEACH, SO IF YOU SMOKE PLEASE EITHER RESPECT THE NO SMOKING OR PLEASE RENT ANOTHER COTTAGE.
- "Great location with great potential. Cleanliness and insects were a problem. We didn't want to sleep with bugs another night so we left early."

- "This was an amazing trip and experience that created lasting memories for our whole family. The cottage was immaculate and beautifully decorated. The updates are gorgeous, and I could sit on the porch facing the water forever. The string lights make it the most coziest place ever to decompress and relax. Our host was ever so communicative and responsive. One of our top trips ever! Also visited Grass River Natural Area, Glacial Hills Pathway, ate at Dockside (twice! *I recommend the Wonton Nachos), and got muffins from Muffin Tin. We will be back! Thanks for a great first experience at Torch!!"

Enjoy exquisite Torch Lake right on the water. Just north of Alden, you won’t find a better location on Torch.
Built in 1910, the cottage has up-north charm with all the modern amenities. We have a patio by the water, a dock, and a mooring buoy. Ideal for families or a group of adults seeking a relaxing getaway. (Not a party rental.)
We also own the cottage next door: combine the rentals for a family reunion to accommodate up to 21 people.
The space
Nestled in among majestic trees and private cottages, the location offers privacy and quiet. Sandy shallows extend for dozens of yards off the rocky shoreline; we also have a dock a mooring buoy for your motorboat or pontoon boat.
The charming town of Alden, with boutiques, dining, and public tennis courts and playground, is a 1/2-mile walk away. Nature preserves and well-maintained roads throughout the area also provide beautiful hiking and biking.
My great grandparents, the Gardners, bought this property back in the 1880s, and it's been the beloved summer home to generations of my family. We trust our guests to be respectful of our treasured family legacy.

There is also a permanent anchor off the end of the dock for those who bring there boat. We also offer boat rentals if you interested.
Torch Lake Is one of the most beautiful lakes on earth. Our cottage is less than a mile from the town of Alden – you can't find a better location on Torch. Our property features a lovely deck overlooking the water (great spot for viewing sunsets) and a sandy beach. For boats we have a dock, hoist, and mooring buoy. The cottage, which sleeps 6, is full of charm. We also have a Guest House which sleeps 4 more people.
The space
Located on breathtakingly beautiful Torch Lake, this Non-Smoking property has been owned by the same family since the late 1800's. The cottage features natural wood interiors, two wood burning fireplaces, shelves of books, gorgeous views of the lake, coziness, and simplicity, and our additional GUEST COTTAGE within a 20 second walk that sleeps four more people is it's own private cozy sanctuary just a stone's throw from the cottage.
Equally suitable for families with young children or older couples, it comfortably sleeps 6 people (10 if you include the Guest House).
We have 150 feet of lakefront, including a sandy beach, a private dock and boat hoist. The lake's sandy bottom is shallow for a fair distance, making it ideal for children.
Because the cottage is a family heirloom, we request great care and consideration from our renters. We also ask that you be very respectful of our neighbors – the cottage is in a residential (not rental) area. For that reason, we don't allow jet skis in order to preserve the peace. Thank you for your understanding!
Other things to note
NOTE:
- During the peak season (mid-June through August), we only rent Saturday-to-Saturday.
- During the spring and fall, we have a 3-night minimum and you may check in on any day of the week.
