- "It was my first time in a hostel and a great experience." - "What a wonderful experience! First time in a hostel, so this may be more a review against pre-conceived notions than prior experience, but that is what I have. Ease of check-in and out. It is just a place that some people use akin to a hotel and that is their prerogative. I gently immersed myself in the happenings of the place, selectively chatting with other guests who, although there was an age mix, were mostly younger than me. I found many of them to be delightfully friendly, curious, inquisitive and engaging as they or I desired. The room is as advertised, with 3 sets of 2 bunks, decent mattresses and basic linens. Locker available and locks sold cheaply which was very much appreciated. There is a basic set up for breakfast of coffee, cream, cereal and milk, canned fruit, and oatmeal packets. If I stayed a week or more I would get my own no sugar oatmeal and a bit of fresh berries for my bfast as their options were all sugar added. That isn't really a complaint as I am not eating low carb in SD, but I like to avoid it in cases when I enjoy the item just as well with less of it. The kitchen has proper utensils and knives, pans, etc as well as enough pantry and fridge storage to make meals home as a traveler desires. Laundry room available to guests 3-10 daily. There seemed to be availability the couple of times I looked. The rate was great, not only in comparison to hotels but modern times. Bravo, great place, thank you, do recommend and will stay again!"

- "I really liked that it had a community living room area, even though the tv (or rather the cable) wasn’t working. That area was nice and spacious. It had good size windows for natural lighting. One downside was that only one ceiling fan had a spot for a light bulb but there was no bulb and no other spots for lights in that area. I really like the community coffee pot. My friend and I donated some extra stuff that we had to the coffee area. The room that we were in was really big. It was clean and the beds were made and presentable. Clean sheets and blankets are always a great thing. I really enjoyed the two little couches. Super comfortable and cute. I really loved the HUGE shower. That thing was awesome. I liked the big round nozzle, it made it so the water would get all over you and not just concentrated in one spot. I didn’t like how, for some reason, only one bathroom downstairs worked. If one person was in the only working downstairs bathroom, and someone in a wheelchair or crutches or even elderly, they had to possibly wait a while until the other person got done. And sometimes with elderly they have a hard time holding onto their bowles. And I think that the hostel should provide maybe some hand sanitizer. Yeah I understand that they don’t want to put a bar of soap in there cuz of the spreading of bacteria or what have you. But a hand sanitizer would be very useful. All in all it was a great place to stay and I would definitely come back."

Located in a historically-designated 1887 building, our dorm rooms are in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter – the center of the nightlife district. Just 4 blocks from the convention center, a few minutes’ walk to the baseball stadium and near to all the top San Diego attractions including the zoo and maritime museum, we are perfectly positioned as a 'home base' for your San Diego explorations. Staffed with friendly, outgoing folks, we'll be happy to share our favorite places.

The space
This is one bed in an all gender 6-bed dorm.

Common areas are shared with all guests including the bathrooms, kitchen and lounge. We house up to 96 guests in dorms and private rooms.

Our 'hidden gem' as many of our guests call it, is a hideaway hostel in the heart of the Gaslamp. Historically designated and reputed to be haunted, it's a cheerful, plant-filled space with a glass atrium ceiling, grand staircase and modern amenities.

Our building has a community vibe with a shared kitchen, lounge and bathrooms.

Also available is a free luggage storage during your stay, laundry facilities and friendly smiles.

All common areas are available to all guests.

Other things to note
WHAT YOU NEED AT CHECK IN - We require guests to present a valid, government-issued ID and a valid credit card in their name to check in. For US citizens, ID can be a drivers license, state ID, or passport. For international guests, we require a passport. We may also ask for proof of onward travel. Guest who only have a debit card may be asked to place a $100 refundable deposit on arrival.

HOW LONG YOU CAN STAY – We usually have a 14-day stay limit in a 6-month period, but are currently allowing longer stays. Please contact us via email to inquire about longer stays.

WHO CAN STAY - Gaslamp Hostel welcomes responsible guests from everywhere outside of San Diego city but note those documents listed above needed at check in! Guests under 18 must have a legal guardian staying in the room with them, but we also require that you contact us directly prior to booking as we must approve the stay first. Please note, we have only hallway, grouped bathroom facilities and a non-child proofed balcony and staircase, so we cannot accept youth under 14.

We do not have cribs or cots. Infants, toddlers and pets, while adorable, are not allowed.

EXTRA GUEST - All private room rates are for one person. An additional person is $13 per day and must be registered for the duration of the stay. Some exceptions are made for special circumstances but you must contact us first for a waiver of the duration of stay requirement.

COVID PROTOCOLS/ETIQUETTE – We follow whatever the current rules are as set by the city and state. We have sanitizers and disinfectants available to guests for their use.

QUIET HOURS – As there are other guests in the building, we ask our guests to be respectful while in the hallways and common spaces between 11 pm and 7 am (midnight on weekends) and to be mindful that there may be guests sleeping in the room next to you.

SMOKING/VAPING – California law prohibits smoking in the building and within 25 feet of the entrance. Please respect this. Violators who smoke/vape on property will incur a $200 cleaning fee and be asked to leave.

GAMING/MINING COMPUTERS - we do not include gaming computer in our prices. Anyone found with a gaming will incur an extra $100 charge per week for use of a gaming computer. If a mining computer is found, there is a $200 charge and the guest will be asked to leave with no refund.

OTHER IMPORTANT STUFF - • Damages will incur a full replacement cost plus the time it takes to replace/repair the item. • No incense, candles or sage burning allowed. • All guests must show a valid legal ID with photo, sign a registration form and liability waiver at check in. • We love pets, but not in the hostel. Pets or fake service animals will incur a $200 cleaning fee and immediate expulsion• Guests may not bring in linens/pillows/furniture without management permission. • We are not like the movie Hostel - we are a fun -loving bunch and don't have a basement anyways. • If you need ideas of things to do, or have a concern, please tell us and we'll see what we can do to make your stay a happy one! • Hostels are about inclusion and learning about other cultures. San Diego is called ‘America’s Finest City’, and for many visitors, it’s easy to see why. Many will attribute this title to San Diego’s weather: warm, sunny and Southern Californian. And while this is true, the city itself lends itself further to this reputation. While the downtown core and Gaslamp districts provide many visitors with their first glimpses of San Diego, it’s the beaches and coastline that really draw folks in to what this city has to offer.

The space
Our hostel makes a great base to exploring all that San Diego has to offer, in both Ocean Beach and beyond. We offer a wide range of dorms and private rooms, many of which have been recently renovated. We also have a guest kitchen and laundry, but what really makes this hostel is amazing is the large outdoor communal spaces. Ocean Beach retains a relaxed California attitude, and our hostel embraces this feeling.

Our kitchen is open! From 7am-9am we supply coffee, tea, and snacks. We have stocked the vending machines with some wonderful, well priced items.
Krisp grocery store is directly across the street as well as a Farmers Market on Wednesdays on Newport Ave. Our activities are posted weekly, they are subject to change but if you call the week of your reservation you'll get the most up to date info.

Other things to note
All guests must be 18+ at the time of check-in or you will be turned away and charged for your first night as a same-day cancellation (as we require 24 hours’ notice to cancel for free).

We do not accept locals at this location, which would include anyone residing within San Diego county. If you have an ID from within San Diego county but do not live here then we would need to see proof of your living elsewhere (an electric bill, rent bill, phone bill with your current non San Diego address). We need a valid government ID from every guest. If you are from the USA then we require a valid driver’s license. If US residents choose to provide a passport in lieu of a driver’s license then the state listed must be outside of CA (unless you can provide proof – listed above-- that you do not live in San Diego County). If you are from outside of the USA then we require a passport to check you in.

We do not allow pets. We do not allow emotional support animals. Legitimate service animals are allowed to check-in with you as long as they are kept on a leash at all times and remain with their owner. Service animals who are aggressive towards other guests, are off-leash in any instance, or are left in the room will be asked to leave. The service animal’s human is responsible for making sure linens and building facilities are not damaged due to their animal or they may incur a fine to replace/repair that item.

Guest are not allowed into each other’s rooms, shared or private. No outside guests are allowed in the building. If you are in a private room and have a second person joining you then they must check-in with reception (they’ll need a valid ID from outside of SD County). If a guest tries to sneak in a non-guest then they will both be asked to leave (and the guest will be refunded according to our 24 hour policy).

Guests will require a physical valid credit card in their name upon check-in, this is for any accidentals, there are no additional charges.
