Or, maybe you'd like to be pampered and treated to a local homemade catered breakfast, lunch or dinner - we can help make that happen.

Not to mention the world of winter activities waiting just outside the cabin. Watch thick snowflakes drift to the snow-blanketed ground and frozen lake through the prism of the cabin’s cathedral windows, which reach from the living area to the lofted bedroom. Then venture out to explore the glittering, snowbound landscape for yourself!

Friends’ getaway for two to four people—complimented by a bottle of wine, maybe? - find a wonderful setting here, as well. Or step outside, build a bonfire in the open fire pit and sip hot chocolate beside the warming flames.

Basswood Lodge at Cotton Lake—A Wonderful Birding Destination
Perched upon a breezy bluff with a birds-eye view across sparkling Cotton Lake Basswood Lodge is a perfect getaway for the birder, nature lover, or for anyone who might enjoy a few days of tranquility and a place to reconnect with oneself and the natural world.
Basswood Lodge is actually nothing more than a traditional Minnesota lake cabin, one of thousands sprinkled around the land of 10,000 lakes; this one as quaint and cozy as you might remember a lake cabin of days gone by. She’s tucked within the hillside to blend harmoniously with oak, maple, birch and of course basswood trees—a forest that provides shelter from the west wind and gracefully frames the lake view. If you enjoy birds and bird watching you will never tire of Basswood’s lake-side deck, eye-level with the forest canopy. Take your morning coffee outdoors, warmed by the morning sun, surrounded by beautiful nature. In fact, after a morning or two like this you may find yourself completely at home.
On the inside, Basswood is spare but complete and finely finished with lovely Douglas fir flooring; warm, reclaimed wood paneling and clear pine windows and doors. Offsetting the subdued tones of abundant wood features, paint colors such as “Morning Light” and “Crystalline” lend brightness to the ceilings and certain walls. Our main level consists of the kitchen, living room and dining area, and the adjacent master bedroom and bathroom. On warm nights it is pleasant to sleep with the French doors open to the screen porch, and wake to loons calling and the conversations of morning birds. A ship’s ladder leads guests to the loft which we’ve furnished with one full size bed, one twin bed and ample seating. The loft is a nice place to read on a stormy day. A feature window captures eagle-eye views across Cotton Lake to forested Shelley Island. Guests who take the loft accomodations will enjoy their own full bath as well.
There is a pleasant footpath down to our sand and gravel beach and the clean swimming water of Cotton Lake. Bass fishing is good right from shore, and better from the end of our 32’ dock. Bring your own boat for the best Cotton Lake has to offer. Public access is easy at the state access straight across from our cabin. Best of all the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge south boundary is one mile up the county road. The refuge offers some of the best birding in Minnesota and is wonderful for day hikes, road bikes and captivating scenery. It is a slice of Minnesota the way it used to be, complete with virtually all the wildlife and tree species we were blessed with, including two rare species—trumpeter swan and gray wolf.
Our family looks forward to enjoying the beauty and tranquility of Cotton Lake for years to come. We would love to share our delightful lake cabin with like-minded and appreciative guests.

As a word of caution, Basswood Lodge is situated on a bluff overlooking Cotton Lake. The lake path is not long but just a little steep. The walkway to the cabin’s main level is also upward, along a stone pathway, and a short stair step. In other words, the cabin may not be entirely suitable for the elderly, infirm or disabled guests. On the other hand, Basswood Lodge is entirely suitable for children and adults in reasonably good shape. And as a side benefit, the hike to and from the lake will get your heart warmed up and pumping, so when you have to leave for home, you’ll go in better shape than when you arrived.

The wrap-around porch and deck afford you the perfect opportunity to sit back and enjoy the bonfire or in the winter watch everyone sledding from a distance, to take in the view of the lake, or to just watch the kids or pups play.

Adventure into Detroit Lakes to enjoy the bustling tourist city, and fun events downtown or hosted by Detroit Mountain, or go just down the road to the cute town of Richwood for ice cream, gas, or essentials. There are also groomed snowmobile trails surrounding the cabin.

If traveling in the winter during a period of heavy snow, some cars with less tire traction may have difficulty getting up the driveway. In the past, guests have parked at the top of the hill but it has rarely been an issue.

A cozy cabin built in 2024. Overlooking the alpaca pasture. Very easy to get to and located in Minnesota’s Lakes country. We have miles of trails for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing. We also have horses. Come check out this amazing property. The alpacas are very friendly and you will be able to hand feed them. We loved sitting around the fire, cooking in the spacious kitchen; and the kids loved all the toys downstairs! We had perfect weather and spent it playing badminton in the yard, while others grilled. One day we even went into downtown DL, and enjoyed shopping and the brewery plus dinner at Zorbaz. The location of this cabin is perfect for a quick trip to explore downtown while also feeling like you are up north. This cabin comes with amenities galore! There is no stone left unturned and it felt clean and luxurious. The photos don't do justice with how much space there is. We are considering staying again for our annual college get together! If you decide to dine at home, the kitchen offers a full size refrigerator, 2 burner cook top, toaster, toaster oven, coffee maker, microwave, electric skillet and a gas grill just off the deck. The appliances are all high-end as are the dishes, glassware, etc. My in-laws and sister and her husband have lake homes on nearby Pelican Lake, neither of which compare to this home. They all stopped by for a visit and were suitably impressed. My 7-year old grandson didn't want to go home. Nothing is perfect, and I did leave a few constructive criticisms. The house is ideal if you have your own boat/kayak, etc. We don't own them so never got out onto the lake. Frankly, I was put off by the high rental rate for either a boat or kayak. By the end of our stay we could have purchased a good kayak for what they wanted in rent. Many other homes we considered had two kayaks that came with the house, so that's a competitive disadvantage for this home. In addition, I would rate the swimming area at the dock as "poor" due to the abundance of weeds and algae. With that in mind, the sparklingly clean pool was wonderful. All-in this is still an easy 5-star home. I would absolutely rent it again and actually hope to, depending on the ability of our family to join us. The space
Cotton Lake is provides a rare combination of size (1800 acres is a big lake) and solitude. Even on the busiest of weekends, the lake is very quiet. Unless you try, you will not see the direct neighbors. This is a big differentiation vs. most properties in the area. On most properties your neighbors will be close enough where you can hear their conversations and they can hear yours. At our place, we need to be respectful of the neighbors but you will not see them from the beach area at all.

It is the epitome of an 'up north' cabin with soaring eagles and howling loons. I guarantee you will see plenty of both during your stay. If you are interested, pontoon boat rental is available as well for an extra charge. A slow lap around the lake will take about 2 hours in a pontoon.

One of the benefits of Cotton Lake is the quiet. We expect you will help our neighbors enjoy the same. There are plenty of party places around - if that is your goal, I'd encourage you to look elsewhere including a hotel. We will not tolerate any significant outdoor noise - period. This means no outdoor speakers or music. Joyful noises from kids jumping on the water tramp, shrieks of excitement from catching a nice bass are highly encouraged.

Despite its solitude, the cabin offers all the creature comforts of a year round home including a dishwasher, WiFi with 50mps speed, three Smart TVs and Air Conditioning.

If the weather turns or you just want to run into town, the City of Detroit Lakes is 9 miles south. DL is a great touristy town with great little shops, boat and jet ski rentals and a population of about 8,800. Detroit Mountain, about 7 miles to the south, is a year round recreation center with downhill skiing in the winter and mountain biking in the summer. Both bikes and skis are available for rent. DM has great XC skiing trails as well but if that is your thing, you may want to head to Maplelag which is 22 miles north.

Five miles west is a gun range if you want to shoot stuff. Five miles south you can tube the Ottertail River with an outfitter for $10 per person which is fun and is a great way to kill two hours on a sunny afternoon.

Cotton Lake has it's own restaurant, Curley's which has great food including steaks, prime rib, burgers with a pool table and juke box etc. Curley's is a ice fishing destination as they plow an ice road every year. Although you can walk directly from our place in to pop a hole in the ice, you may opt for a quick 1 mile drive to Curley's so you can drive your rig ( UTV, truck etc) directly onto the ice (at your own risk of course). You can take your snowmobile directly from our driveway to the lake. Minnesota DNR Snowmobile trails 272 and 275 both run across Cotton Lake. Park your sleds in our driveway and access hundreds of miles of trail, we take the run from Cotton Lake up to Elbow Lake a few times per winter.

The cabin has great views of the lake and of sunsets but that also means . Although there some elevation. There are 27 steps from the house to the beach, there is a private gravel road to the beach area should you prefer to drive up and down. We own this road and it a great way to get grandma and grandpa to the water's edge.

Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge flanks the North Side of Cotton Lake for those interested in birding, hiking or biking. TNWF, at 66 sq miles, features a learning center with regularly scheduled programs.

The big grocery store is 10 miles away with a convenience store located two miles down the road.

In summary - there are plenty of things to do in the area should you be interested in something other than enjoying your very own beach :-) If you have any questions about our place or the area, please let me know and I will be glad to help. We use the place quite a bit in the summer time but are happy to rent M-F. During fall, winter and spring, we rent weekends as well.

Three important notes -
1) The second bathroom is a 3/4 bath (sink, tub and toilet - no shower).
2) The beds will not be made upon arrival. Your sheets will be clean and placed on each bed. We ask that you leave the place clean including washing and drying the sheets and towels prior to departure to ready the place for the next guests. Of course we clean between guests but the laundry takes awhile so we need your help.
3) Steps - the cabin is on a hill meaning there are steps to the cabin from the driveway and there are steps to the water.

Two family room areas each with their own TV for Netflix if it is rainy.

Two kayaks, two stand up paddle boards, a paddle boat and canoe along with fishing poles and tackle box full of crank bait for catching fishing off the end of the docks (mostly panfish, rock bass and large mouth bass with the occasional walleye and northern pike).

The place is fully furnished with shampoo, towels, sheets, pillows, dishes, gas grill etc.

Renters will not have access to the motor boats, four wheeler or jet ski unless you opt to rent the pontoon.

We ask that you wash and dry the sheets and towels and clean up prior to departure.

There is a camera facing the driveway from the back door - this is on and recording 24x7. Of course every hotel in the US has multiple cameras but I figured it is worth mentioning.

If you are checking in on a Sunday, please note your check in time will be 7pm. Our typical summer rental is Sunday night at 7pm to Friday check out at noon. The reason? We use our place on weekends in the summer. I will confirm you are comfortable with this during the reservation process.

We are pretty flexible with check in and check out times in spring, fall and winter.

Welcome to our cozy, rustic cabin nestled on the shores of Island Lake, one of the best fishing spots in Becker County. Centrally located between Detroit Lakes and Park Rapids, our cabin offers the perfect getaway for those seeking relaxation, adventure, and nature. The space
The cabin is a part of the South Island View Resort. It is set apart from the other cabins with a beautiful view of the water. Your dock is just steps away.

Your stay at the cabin comes with the resort's amenities, including washer and dryer, ice machine, and boat dock.

Since purchasing the cabin in May of 2024, we have installed a new shower, new furniture throughout and new high-grade laminate flooring. We plan to install new blinds and windows before the 2025 season. The photos do not necessarily reflect all of the upgrades. We plan to get new photos as soon as the cabin is open in 2025!

We have all the small things that will make your stay one to remember - all guests have access to the kayak, hammock, board games, Wi-Fi speaker, charcoal grill (with supplies), outdoor chairs for the fire pit, to name a few.

Island Lake in Becker County, Minnesota, is a picturesque freshwater lake located in a region known for its abundance of lakes and outdoor recreational opportunities. The cabin has steep stairs leading to the loft, so it may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues. We’re in a forest setting — expect some critters, bugs, and natural sounds! Cell coverage can be spotty. In winter, snow and ice can make the outdoor stairs slippery, so please use caution. We don’t provide baby or child amenities, so plan ahead if traveling with little ones. Well water may have a natural odor but is safe to drink. Welcome to your private cabin on Lake Ida! There is room for the whole family with 4 bedrooms (plus a Pack 'N Play, cot and day bed for the little ones) & 3 bathrooms, as well as plenty of parking. Our unique, 100-year old farmhouse is surrounded by a beautiful lawn on a large property with lots of large trees. Located just 8 miles North of Detroit Lakes, the house at 14 Hands Farm is the perfect place to unwind and unplug! The house has beautiful hardwood floors and wood trim throughout the main level; and boasts multiple living areas to watch TV, read or play games. Off the kitchen is a large dining room and the kitchen is set up to cook a meal for the entire family. One large bedroom, with an attached patio and bathroom with a jacuzzi tub are featured on the main level, with a second full bathroom in the basement. We also provide a washer/dryer in the basement for your vacation needs. The top level of the home features three additional bedrooms and another large bathroom. Multiple windows in these bedrooms allow for beautiful views to the East and West. Your family will enjoy the spacious lawn, multiple flower beds, and a view of the gardens (including newly-planted Christmas trees!) on our farm.

We are nestled perfectly in the countryside, yet with easy access to any surrounding Lakes Area event! Every window at our Strawberry Lake Cabin frames a kaleidoscopic view of trees bursting into red, yellow, and orange. If boating interests you, we have a canoe & boat.

The space
Too many to name! Mostly, we love the privacy and its secluded feeling in the dense trees, the big front deck facing the water, the private boat dock, and the lofted bedroom that feels like a tree house - a place where you can escape the rest of the world for awhile. At evening, step out onto the screened porch with a glass of your favorite wine and hear the sounds of silence with friends. Or, seat yourself around the fire pit with family, telling stories while making S'mores!

Inside the cabin, the master bedroom is downstairs w/queen sized bed. Our loft with a view of the lake has a Casper queen sized bed. For those persons wanting to be digitally engaged, our high speed fiber optic internet connection has steady Wi-Fi 300 Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload speeds.

Typically, our cabin... shaded by trees, well insulated, with ceiling fans & located in northern Minnesota stays pleasantly cool inside. On occasion, when the weather does heat up, you'll enjoy our cabin's new Mini Split A/C unit.

The main floor boasts the cozy master bedroom with a king sized Sleep Number bed and attached bathroom with double sinks and a bathtub/shower. A large fully stocked kitchen, dining space, office space, sitting area and living room (with TV) are also located on the main level.

* Main Level Outdoor Access *

Access to the outdoor deck space is available through the main floor living room. The deck has beautiful views, plenty of seating and a propane grill. Come enjoy your morning coffee or a glass of wine with friends/family in the evenings.

Outside next to the lake is a sandy beach area with 3 loungers, two docks, a swim raft with 2 seats and a slide, a boat lift and a jet ski lift as well as a fire pit with 6 Adirondack chairs.

Upstairs has 4 bedrooms, 3 with queen beds and 1 with two bunk beds (4 twin beds). A variety of children's toys, books and DVD's are provided in the bunk room. There is one spacious full bathroom with a bathtub/shower and a heat lamp.

Each bedroom has a TV with Amazon Firesticks with Netflix, Disney+ and Hulu to stream desired shows/movies. Upstairs also has a living room with an electric fireplace, TV, and access to an upper level deck with stunning sunrise views of the lake and property.

A large heated garage provides extra entertainment with a living space, TV, half bath, laundry, table with chairs, full kitchen, Pac-Man arcade machine, ping pong table, darts, foosball table and bean bags.

Nelson Lake is a quiet spring fed lake in the middle of a 3 lake chain
including Upper Cormorant and Middle Cormorant. Channels allow you to access all 3 lakes by kayak, boat, pontoon, paddle board or jet ski. Middle Cormorant has a restaurant on the lake called Swannies that you can access by pontoon or boat. The lake is known for great fishing including walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, rock bass and perch. We love this peaceful lake which is ideal for swimming and water activities!

* Home Setting *

The home is located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac with all paved roads leading up to it. It’s perfect for walks or jogs enjoying the beauty of tree lined roads and tons of true Minnesota beauty!

Although we have never run into any issues, a large hill right before the property may pose challenges in the winter months if not driving a four wheel drive vehicle.

Adventure into Detroit Lakes to enjoy the bustling tourist city, and fun events downtown or hosted by Detroit Mountain, or go just down the road to the cute town of Richwood for ice cream, gas, or essentials. There are also groomed snowmobile trails surrounding the cabin.

The home is 45 minutes from Fargo Moorhead and 20 from Detroit Lakes allowing easy access to many events and a quick commute. There are many restaurants nearby and some cute shops in the small towns. The lake has two public boat access points, so bring your watercraft. The home's gradual beach makes it an easy place to dock for your day on the water.

The deck has an outdoor dining set, propane grill, and lounge chairs. There are chairs for the yard and beach as well. Beach towels included. Just bring your suitcase and sun hat!

Before booking: ***Highly recommend that guests can easily walk up and down stairs. The cottage can only be accessed by a sloped gravel walkway or interior stairs.

The space
The property is a two level home, entering on the upper level into the kitchen. Through the kitchen you will find the stairs to the basement on the right, living room in front of you and the upper bath and bedrooms to the left. The upper bath is a full bath with large shower. One upper bedroom is a queen bed with closet. The second upper bedroom is a queen with twin XL bunk bed. There is also space in either room for a pack and play. We have two on property for your use.

Please note one quirk of the property is the staircase. The stairs are farmhouse style, meaning they are steeper than a normal staircase. This may be harder for some to navigate.

At the base of the stairs is the third bedroom, featuring two sets of twin over twin bunk beds.
Turning to your left is a sliding door out to the large upper deck and the basement living space. Through the living room, you will find the lower bathroom featuring a stall shower. The laundry room is next door. and just beyond is the final bedroom. This bedroom is a queen bed and the built-in in this room is where you will find additional pillows and linens.

One thing to note about this home, there are some spaces where the floors are a bit slanted. Due to settling over time, the home has become unlevel in some areas. Please know that it is still very safe, we have had two professionals inspect the property and we are safe and sound albeit a bit quirky.

We are family focused so we have some games and toys for kids, safety covers for the outlets, and beach toys for littles.


We do have air conditioning, but please note it is window units and not central air. We have three units, two upstairs and one on the lower level.

Lower lever has a beautiful walk out family room with gas fireplace, tv, 2 guest bedrooms with queen beds, 2 bunk sleeping room (sleeps 4), full bath, laundry and walk in from garage. Lower patio has sofa seating, propane fire pit, chairs, picnic table, outdoor beverage cooler & 6 seat hot tub. Fenced area for dogs or playing yard games, such as bean bag toss & ladder toss etc. Feel free to bring games as well.

Walk down to the lower deck over looking the lake. Snack counter height bar with stools looking over side of deck and table with chairs.

Stroll down to the lake, dock to park boat, pontoon, jet ski and/or fish from, beach front for swimming or playing with water toys or just relax in front of the wood firepit. Water craft not provided, feel free to bring your own.

Guest access
Code entry keypad at upper kitchen door. 2 stall garage for parking. 4-6 car parking in driveway. Guests will have full access to the entire home except for 1 cleaning closet in lower level back hallway. Lock also on the furnace room & door to storage under the steps.

Other things to note
Leaf Lake is known for great fishing such as Walleye, Northern, & Sunnies, also for swimming.
The home is on a tarred road. Located in the heart of a bay. Quiet, relaxing yet still room to take out boat to ski, tube & play with water toys. Lilly pad in shed on beach provided.
Hooligans bar & grill is located on Leaf lake, by boat, drive or close enough to walk. Pit 611, Roadhouse, Cormorant Pub, Cormorant Inn are all near for food & entertainment.
