Located in historic and haunted Alton, this 1400 square foot bungalow
style home built in 1942 is just like visiting grandma's house. Quaint
antiques, combined with two overstuffed couches, large TVs, central
air, and a retro feel kitchen with modern appliances will make your
visit comfortable and comforting. And, the house is all yours, so you
can watch TV way past your bedtime. ;)

The home is less than a 30 minute drive from downtown St. Louis with a
variety of terrific museums, world class Zoo, and the Missouri
Botanical Garden (a can't miss). It is also a quick drive up the
beautiful Great River Road to scenic Grafton, with spectacular views
along the route and several waterfront restaurants to enjoy. Just a
bit further is Marquette State Park.
And golf courses, there are a half dozen golf course a mere 20 min drive from the house.
And, don't forget the town where you are staying! Alton has it's own
wonderful museums, an art gallery, several parks, a charming historic
district, locally owned restaurants, funky shops, and a Saturday
morning Farmer's Market that can't be beat! If you time your stay
right, there are historical and haunted tours through town. Did you

This historic carriage house was built in 1910. We added modern touches but really wanted to keep the character! You will have a bedroom with a queen bed, kitchen, bathroom with shower and living room. There is very fast Wi-fi, Smart TV, record player that also connects via bluetooth to your device, and hot tub. You also have a private outdoor area with seating.

We are in the process of renovating the large home on the property!

The Elm Street Escape is a beautiful house built in the 1930s, and perfectly updated through the years.

Original pocket doors throughout the living and dining rooms, granite counters and new appliances in the kitchen, and a beautiful master bath with dual shower head, rainfall shower.

The option for a 4th bed is available upon request with the use of the pullout couch located in the living room. Pocket doors in both sides of the living room and a downstairs half-bath ensure complete privacy in this arrangement.

* THERE WILL BE A $600 CHARGE FOR SMOKING INSIDE THE HOUSE.

* PETS: We are unable to accomodate any pets due to an allergy of the owner/cleaner of this property.

*NO CHILDREN ALLOWED

* ADDITIONAL GUESTS: there will be an additional guest fee added to any guests not approved during booking.

*Cameras are in use outside around the property and in the Laundry/Porch area. There are none located inside the apartment itself.

We reserve the right to terminate this rental agreement and you will need to leave the property if these rules are not followed.

* LATE CHECK OUT: there will be an additional $70 charge if checking out late unless previously agreed upon.

* You are welcome to use any of the outside structures (stairs, walkway etc.) but owners are not liable for any injuries that may occur as it is understood this is a risk you choose to take.

*Quiet Time is between 10:00 PM and 8:00 AM. Please refrain from any loud noise or music during this time.

* Garbage must be stowed in the proper garbage or recycling receptacle, located by parking area

*Please do not flush anything other than toilet paper. No feminine products or wipes should be flushed at any time. *Even things that state they are “flushable” please do not flush them down our system. This is old building with old pipes!

*Grilling must be done at least 10 feet away from the building.

* Check Out Time is 10 AM: To complete check out, make sure refrigerator is emptied, take out all trash, wash all dishes and put in dish rack to dry. Please leave used beds unmade no need to strip them. All used towels need to be placed in the washer. You do NOT have to start the load. Then text or use VRBO messaging to let us know you have departed.

*If you find any damage or cleaning issues please call us as soon as you Check-In. You must contact us to address any cleaning issues within 3 hours of your arrival. The house must be returned in relatively the same condition, i.e. no trash/decorations left/no spills/ no damage/ no missing items, furniture that was moved out back.

Violators will be removed from the property without refund or/and fined.
The person who created the reservation is responsible for any rules violations.

Barb and Gary believe your privacy is very important to you but we are happy and available to field questions about your guest suite or our town. Please use the Airbnb app for all general text communications. For emergencies, our phone numbers are listed in the 3-ring Guest Suite Manual binder next to the microwave.

Other things to note
Our home is a red brick two story on the corner of Bluff St. and State St. in Alton. Please park your car directly in front of our house on State Street or on the side of our house on Bluff St.

Checking in on or after 3:00 pm - From the front of the house walk to the front of the porch, then follow the brick/gravel path (left) through the courtyard to the side porch door. If you are arriving at night the sidewalk and path will be lit. The courtyard has a motion detector that will turn lights on as you enter. The side door lock is a button-style keypad, enter the 4-digit code #### then push the button with the lock symbol on it. Ta-da, the lock will automatically retract.

Whenever you are not in your guest suite please remember to lock the entry door. To lock the door, simply close the door shut and push the button with the lock symbol on it.

Checking out on or before 11:00 am – Please put towels and washcloths in the wardrobe and place the trash you collect in the trash/grocery bags and on the porch. There are kitchen trash bags under the sink if more bags are needed. Make one additional check to ensure you have everything, forgetting stuff is sad. Make a friendly comment in our Guest Book, and turn off all lights. Lock the entrance door on the way out and send us a quick text to let us know you’ve left. Please be safe traveling to your next destination.

The space
The Maupin Studio: named after the architect who’s standout features include the unique yellow bricks and large awning. This home was built in 1910 and the bones are outstanding. We added modern touches but really wanted to keep the character!

The home itself is large and we are renovating it a floor at a time. The first floor is currently finished and houses your studio and a two bedroom unit. The top floor is our next project! The basement is a workplace to a framist by day. All parts of the house are secure and require key access.

Your studio has a large and comfortable king size memory foam bed, kitchenette with seating, bathroom with shower and living room area. There is very fast Wifi, Smart TV, record player that also connects via Bluetooth to your device, espresso machine, books and magazines, and cozy robes.

There are two units in this building and a carriage house unit in the rear of the property. This studio has private access and is yours to call home for the duration of your stay.

This Suite is an adorable one bedroom, one bathroom apartment located above our commercial building, The 1904 General Store, and adjacent to our restaurant, The Brown Bag Bistro. It's centrally located in downtown Alton and is perfect for guests who want to explore the town by foot!

This building is known as Alton's World's Fair Building. It is one of the many structural and artistic remnants spread across the country of the majestic 1904 World's Fair that was held in St. Louis!

Here are quirks that have been an issue and took note:

Jacuzzi Tub is fantastic but please note it takes about 10+ minuets, to sometimes 15, to prefill the tub, enough to submerge the jets under the water line. The water is low pressure when its filling.

Apartment size washer and dryer is good for smaller loads. Please do not worry about doing any laundry that is not expected.

Building has central heating and AC, although control of building thermostat not in unit. Temp is roughly 68- 70 degrees. Each bedroom has its own window AC unit along with multiple fans, space heaters in season.

There are 2 refrigerators, but the one on the left is a refrigerator, and the one on the right is the freezer.
They look identical.

This ranch-style 3BR house features an extra large flatscreen TV mounted in the combined living room / dining space. One 'bedroom' has been converted to an office/music room with antique writing desk, electric piano, and guitar.

The combined space ("L-shaped") along with the corner windows give lovely daylight to the main living area and a sense of spaciousness. The decor is traditional (primarily light oak finish with some dark wood finish in certain rooms). Washer/dryer also included.

You'll have access to the entire upper floor with the exception of the closet in the office/music room, where cleaning supplies and other items are stored.

No access to garage or lower unit (guest house).

Climate control is set remotely. Please let us know if you'd like the thermostat adjusted.

Other things to note
Stays of 30+ days require an extra cleaning anytime between days 21 and 35, and once a month thereafter. This is to keep the space from getting run down, and create well-being during your stay. These long-stay additional cleanings are not included in the original booking's cleaning fee - but if you need them to be we can make a special invoice that includes them (for instance, if this is going to be paid by an employer, school, or reimbursed as a business expense). I'm always glad when I'm on a long term stay and get cleanings - I'm always happy with it afterwards. :)

We are required to screen guests that do not yet have a strong track record as guests on AirBnB - this means 3 or more positive reviews. If you don't have this requirement, we will request that you
1. provide a legible photo or scan of your Drivers' license or passport, plus
2. names and phone contact information for three character references, including at least one work-related reference and not including family members.

If the references give a good report and we receive your valid ID, your booking will stand; if not, it will be canceled without penalty on either side.

Occasionally, we may need to schedule a viewing of the property for potential guests. If this happens during your stay, we’ll notify you at least 48 hours in advance of the tour so you’re aware and can have the space tidy to showcase its best features.

The lower level bath area in the basement is very nice, but is not a "room" unto itself, but a section of the basement--see photos. There is a door at the top of the stairs for privacy. Full Upstairs modern bathroom completely remodeled (2024).

The TV is a 55" Samsung HD smart TV. Only local network stations are available (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS, others). However, there is High-Speed Wireless Internet so you can stream YouTube TV, Netflix, Amazon TV (firestick), etc if you wish and you have your own account. You will be billed for any pay-per-view charges unless you use your own account. WiFi logon info is available in the Guest Resources section once your reservation is confirmed and also is printed out on the modem on the lower shelf in the living room. There is a binder on the desk with various information and instructions regarding the home, as well as local shops, restaurants, pubs, attractions, etc.

A common inside stairway and corridor leads to entrances of all four on-site apartments - 3 on the second level and 1 on the third level of the building. Stairways are wide and easily navigable with bags. Once inside your unit, you have your own access directly onto the south facing (river facing) solid concrete deck with patio chairs to enjoy the ambience of the flowing river and boat traffic on the Mighty Mississippi.
