- "The lodge is set in a very scenic setting next to Lock Aboyne and woodlands which you can walk around. The property itself owned and run by a lovely couple who pretty much seem to do everything themselves. The decor is dated and old fashioned but if you like golf this is a great option as the course setting is fabulous …it’s a 9 hole set over a huge expanse with inclines and some difficult hazards. We ate at the lodge one night and boat inn restaurant the next which is a 10 min drive down the road …breakfast was simple but freshly made …"

Games were so fun, shower is really powerful. One thing - bed is very soft FYI! Also, we struggled with getting any sort of taxi booking in the evening so I would advise booking ahead of time if you plan to venture to nearby villages etc. and want a couple drinks - we ended up just driving to places and getting takeaway and coming back to have some drinks with dinner instead. Games were so fun, bed was very soft FYI! Car parking nearby perfect. Will recommend to anyone and everyone!!!! Thank you xx"

Birch Cottage is a late Victorian cottage which still retains many of its original features. It has been in the family for 4 generations, and we still have strong links with this beautiful area.
There are two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs, accessed by a very steep staircase; downstairs there is an open-plan kitchen and living area, and a further double bedroom with en-suite toilet and shower room. The house faces South and has a secluded and sunny garden with seating area. It also has a small lawned garden on the other side of the little lane. The setting is tranquil, yet close to great amenities. At night you can hear the River Dee, and you may well see deer and (if you are lucky) red squirrels in the garden or on the lane. Across the River Dee is Aboyne, with pub, cafes, good shops, swimming pool, gliding club, & golf course; across the lane 15 miles of uninterrupted hill walking to the next glen. The cottage is an excellent base for exploring Royal Deeside with its opportunities for walking, biking, fishing, canoeing, bird watching etc. It also offers standing stones, Pictish crosses, historic castles, whisky distilleries. In the Summer there are Highland Games in the area, which people travel from all over the world to compete in; they are well worth attending! Thirty miles to the East of Aboyne is the city of Aberdeen, with modern shopping centres and other big city attractions, as well as sandy beaches, museums, and art galleries to explore.

Aboyne bridge is closed to vehicular traffic just now, but open for pedestrians and cyclists. Traffic between Birch Cottage and the village is via Dinnet Bridge.

- "We went looking for countryside walks, beautiful castles and peaceful scenery. Found all that and more besides, couldn't recommend it enough." - "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Birch Cottage, what's not to like? It is spacious, well equipped and tastefully furnished. The aura of the cottage is very warm and friendly and it still feels like the house is inhabited by a happy family. We especially enjoyed the combination of the open kitchen, dining area and living room. The stair to the first floor does not feel steep at all if you do it like a sailor during a storm: just lean forward or backwards. Even if the cottage is not located directly in Aboyne, it is close to the local pub and all other facilities we needed. Communication with the owners was perfect and they are are very friendly and generous. Recommended!"

- "This was a great property for our family visit to Tarland/Aboyne. Bev was a great host and property was excellent. Lovely garden area, great furnishings and very well appointed." - "We rented No 1 The steading for 3 nights over Christmas. Communication and check-in was easy and welcoming. Lots of parking in front of the house. The house was just perfect. Modern comfort with a cottage feel. It was immaculately clean. Furnished and decorated to a very high standard, with fluffy towels and quality bedding, well equipped kitchen, comfy lounge with cushions and throws. Warm and cosy with central heating and the log burner. A lovely touch was the Christmas tree and welcome pack full of goodies. We all felt really at home and although we didn’t use the hotel the bar and restaurant seemed equally cosy and welcoming. Loch Kinord, the largest of the 3 Lochs, set in the Muir of Dinnet, can be accessed by walking anti-clockwise around the first loch. This waymarked trail is approximately 7.5km walk, taking around 2-3 hours. On route, you can visit “Burn-O-Vat” said to be the hiding place of Rob Roy, the notorious outlaw. The “Deeside Way” an old railway line once used by the Royals to travel from Aberdeen to Ballater, is now a footpath, passing through Dinnet and is a great route to walk or cycle to the neighbouring villages. Heading towards Aberdeen, you will arrive at Aboyne which has a large supermarket and a few local shops including Strachan’s of Deeside. A shop that, if they don’t sell it then it doesn’t exist. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, we have a selection of great golf clubs within a short drive from the cottage.
Aboyne golf course is the oldest club on Royal Deeside. 6000 yards of impeccable fairways and faultless greens. Ballater golf course is situated on the banks of the river Dee. An 18-hole course with breath-taking scenery which changes on every hole. There is also a selection of 9-hole courses for you to enjoy including Tarland, Lumphanan and Torphins. Crathes castle, situated near Banchory, has many events on throughout the year. It is also home to Go-Ape, a high treetop adventure park for the brave adventurer in you. Nature spotters will love the waymarked trails along the coy burn- keep any eye out here for buzzards, herons and kingfishers.
For the whisky lovers, you may want to visit our local distillery “Royal Lochnagar” famous for its royal warrant and its outstanding flavour. Located only 1 mile from Balmoral Castle, it’s fed by the crystal-clear water of the Scarnock springs. Why not take a tour of the Distillery followed by a dram of Royal Lochnagar 12-year-old single malt.
During the summer months, you will be able to visit the Highland games with the closest being on the first Saturday of August in Aboyne, where you will see traditional events such as hammer throwing, caber tossing, tug- O- war, highland dancing and much more. With mass pipe bands playing throughout the day. There is always lots of stalls for you to purchase local wears and of course, the beer tent.

Bring the whole family to this great home with lots of room for fun, inside and out
suitable for families and groups of friends.
We are very pleased to open our home for you to enjoy.
The property is in a peaceful tree-lined neighborhood, a short walk from the nearest shops, bars, restaurants, and of course the River Dee. It is a granite house built over 100 years ago and is a mix of old and new as the kitchen has been extended to the full width of the property, creating a bright, open, and functional space for gathering and socializing. There are two large lawns on the South and West sides of the property with a wooded garden lining the boundary of the property. The property is accessed from the quiet residential Rhu-na-haven Road via the main gate.
The house has two entrances. There is a large main entrance (porch) leading to the cloakroom, downstairs toilet, and hall and a utility room entrance leading into the kitchen a the side of the house.
From the main entrance, the hall leads to the living/dining room and downstairs generous double bedroom. The living and dining rooms can either be separate or combined into one large room, the living room has a functioning wood-burning stove. The hall features an original wooden banister and staircase winding to the upstairs toilet/bathroom fitted with a free-standing bath and separate walk-in shower. There are three spacious double bedrooms upstairs, one of which is fitted with 3 single beds.
The property is a wonderful place to either feel secluded and rest or to host. It is also a perfect base to enjoy the numerous outdoor activities and sites throughout the seasons in the North East of Scotland.
Aboyne is nestled in Royal Deeside, midway between Braemar and Aberdeen, at the foot of the Cairngorm National Park and the location of the Muir of Dinnet and Glen Tanar nature reserves. The village has a beautiful green at its center and is used to host the annual Highland Games. The Deeside Activity Park is a 10 min drive away with a wide variety of outdoor activities to choose from. The Deeside Way (the old Deeside railway line now converted into a walking and cycling path) running from Aberdeen to Ballater, with a few points that must be crossed over the north Deeside road. Aboyne is a wonderful base for local/nearby adventures as well as walks/climbs, fishing, swimming, cycling during the spring-autumn months and in winter months a little further out at the Lecht Ski Centre (28m NW) or the Glen Shee Ski Centre (36m SW). The Deeside Gliding Club is a 30min walk / 15 min cycle on the Deeside Way or a 5-minute drive from the property and has a purpose-built layby off the A93 to watch the activities of the club. The Aberdeen water-ski club operates out of the Aboyne Loch, just outside the village, to the North just off the A93.

- "Booked Golf View for a week of discovering Deeside, weren’t disappointed. Property is incredibly built half over Loch with ducks, swans, occasional water skier and golfers in distance, all viewed from massive (but safe glass fronted patio) ceiling to floor windows In living area and master bedroom. Every basic supplied- even oil tin foil ice cubes etc. Photos don’t do the property justice, but if going book now as pricing level far to low for quality size and location."

The reserve itself lies within the Cairngorms National Park and is a network of wetlands, moors and woods. Numerous bird species, squirrels, martens and a large variety of plant life have made it their home and there are hides throughout the reserve where you can discreetly observe them. The most spectacular aspect however is the Burn-o-Vat, which flows through a massive bowl shape of pink granite (the Vat), a testament to the power of glaciers which carved out the landscape we see today. You can make your way into the Vat through a narrow crack in the rock and listen to the strange echoes of water that seems to pour out of the rocks.
