Looking for snow? When we are a winter wonderland, Cabin Fever has absolutely the very best snow access on all of Palomar. We front on County plowed, Crestline Road. There is a shovel on the deck if you need to clear the berm.
Cabin Fever has been a much-loved vacation rental since May 2013 with hundreds of wonderful reviews. Many guests have now returned multiple times. We have our first guest coming this year for the 15th time and many quite a few times. We are constantly updating and adding to the cabin and you'll find it immaculate.
Like to get away from it all but have the luxuries of home? Come away to this delightful, enchanting, cabin-in-the-woods. Slip back in time with the mountain-milled, cedar log siding and deck. This cabin makes your heart smile!
A stone fireplace is waiting for you with a rustic mantel claimed from the forest floor. Cozy up in front of the fire on comfortable leather furniture with some vintage antiques woven in.
Modern amenities start with the fully stocked, kitchen and bath with granite counters and a washer/dryer. There is a 50 inch 'Smart TV' to turn on for your favorite music , or watch a movie, and enjoy our high speed internet and Apple TV with so many options using your devices. Built in Mini-splits with both AC and heat on each level to click on while you get a warm fire going.
Browse from our library of books that take you back in time to days gone by, or inspire, intrigue or motivate. When was the last time you played Dominos? We have a collection of games to choose from, plus a few books and toys for the children.
Where will you sleep?
Upstairs is the bedroom with a queen bed and reading nook. Close the black-out drapes, turn on the Sound Soother if you'd like, and settle in to sleep in.
Across from the bedroom, above the living area is a ramp to a loft with 2x2s to prevent slipping but not comfortable barefoot. (Wish there was room for stairs!) There are two, twin mattresses suitable for children, since an adult can not stand up because of a low ceiling. The kids we've met at the cabin absolutely love the loft.
Bathroom
The only bathroom is downstairs. Nightlights, light the stairs and the bathroom. There is a Pack N Play for your little ones.
Palomar is a place to 'not do' too. Enjoy our propane barbecue while soaking up the sun on the deck and take in the chorus of birds, get lost in a favorite book or one of ours.
A trip to Palomar is not complete without going to the world famous Observatory (closed during snow). Browse the General Store and visit the Boucher Fire Lookout. (Our only restaurant is closed for repairs). You can take off on a hike on the many miles of trails in the State Park and National Forest or fish in Doane Pond.
There are several 'Field Trips' within walking distance to visit one farm with chickens, turkeys, goats and sheep for fresh goat cheese, milk and eggs. Our Palomar Roaster imports organic coffee and is a short hike up the road.
There are also wonderful day trips from Cabin Fever. However, one couple planned lots of outings but a couple days later, when they were checking out, totally relaxed, said, 'Next time maybe we will venture out of the cabin. It has such a wonderful ambiance and we loved it so much that we just had to stay in the entire time'. We have lots of options waiting for you at our Fun Things to Do link provided on this page, right above those nice Reviews that have come our way. Keep scrolling...
You're invited to be our guest and come away to Cabin Fever!
- "We had everything we needed at the cabin to be comfortable, and the instructions were clear and thorough. It's a really nice cabin! Definitely check out the Observatory while you're up here." - "Very comfortable and peaceful place for time away from work. Well stocked, plenty of nice seating in the living room, and deck view is especially great for those who love the woods and listening to the birds. Bonnie was very responsive when we had a small issue. Great hosts! We would absolutely stay here again!"

Rancho de los Robles is located on the east side of Mount Palamor in Northeast San Diego County Ca. Nestled under over 400 ancient Oak Trees the property offers Horse Camping with a pasture for horses (specifically for renters), stall space in the barn with paddock. A pond, access to the Pacific Crest Trail, wineries, incredible nature, golf, hunting and brilliant star filled skies.
Rancho de los Robles is a great getaway. If you choose to you will not come in contact with anyone. Fresh air and sunshine are in abundance here. At 4200 feet elevation smog, city noise and lights are not present...It should also be noted that because of its rural setting Cell and wifi reception are spotty. Wifi in the house is consistent as is Verizon cell. That said there are areas on the ranch and the surrounding areas that are non-service.
One hour to Palm Springs, and Idywild, forty minutes to Julian (a quaint old mining town), and Temecula (Old town, Wineries, Pechanga Casino, shopping and dining) 15 minutes to Warner Springs (golf). One and a half hours to San Diego Zoo, Sea World and Beaches.
However ...Once here you will probably not want to leave the property. This is a horse ranch with many other farm animals (ducks, chickens, goats). There is a great winery at the bottom of the hill with a tasting room.
The house has an incredible sunset deck with BBQ, full kitchen.
We also provide a venue for events
- "Phil was very responsive, the entrance is a little hard to get to if you don't know where you're going and Phil was kind enough to meet us on the main road (he offered, which was so sweet!). The space was as pictured, it is a beautiful space in the mountains with oaks and we even got to meet some baby goats. The wifi was strong enough for phone calls and streaming video on netflix but I wouldn't plan to use it all night, we were there to visit the outdoors. The kitchen was super well stocked and beds were very comfortable. Phil answered all the questions that we had and was very helpful with making sure we were all set up, he even gave us a bottle of local cabernet."

The barn was fun, the stove kept everything nice and warm. Kids didn’t end up needing the air mattress, they liked sleeping on the futon. The Lilacs was the FIRST VRBO listing on Palomar Mountain in historic Bailey Meadows (near but not part of Bailey Meadow Resort, which is currently closed). We've been on VRBO since 2005 and still open for a romantic getaway, serene encounter with a nature or a quiet, comfy family retreat.
We do have a caretaker living at the back, opposite side of the entry at a lower level, but on the property, so please be respectful and remember the quiet hours 8PM-8AM.
The Lilacs is a beautifully restored, cozy 1920's Redwood cabin on Palomar Mountain just 1:25 minutes from San Diego. The cabin has 1) Master bedroom, 2) a small room with desk/dresser & ladder to the LOFT for the adventurous sleepers, plus 3) a futon sofa-bed in main living room, where there is the original rock hearth. ALSO a large, full-glassed in, sun room, a complete kitchen (new stainless steel stove/oven, microwave, dishwasher, washer/drier, cookware and more).
Grandma Bailey's cabin turned 100 in 2024!... and is simply FULL of fun, atmosphere, historic knickknacks and special vibes.
The original Redwood walls and timbers were hand-assembled by craftsmen 100 years ago. I restored it all and worked hard to preserve the original character and charm; including the hand-made cabinets, plank walls & doors. Then I totally upgraded the bathrooms and kitchen.
The cabin is located on the ever-peaceful Evergreen Trail in the Bailey Meadows area, by most accounts the most historic and quaint part of Palomar Mountain (a heavy day of traffic on Evergreen Trail is 2-4 cars a day). Sorry, this is not a place for parties, absolutely none.
Besides relaxing, there is lots of scenic outing and lots to do on Palomar and the surrounding region.
IF YOU ARE FROM SAN DIEGO: Palomar is a piece of High Sierras environment just 1.5 hours from down town. Amazing what SD County has to offer! This Cabin sits on the cozy, shaded side of the mountain. Palomar Mt. State Park is awesome and just 5 minutes away. World-famous Palomar Observatory, Julian (the 1800's quaint Gold mining town) and Anza Borrego State Park, are scenic drives close enough for an outing. We are near to the Bailey's Resort on Palomar, but without the traffic or campers or congestion of Idyllwild, Big Bear, Julian or Lake Arrowhead, and less expensive too.
IF YOUR ARE FROM OUT OF San Diego: There are many activities within an hour of Palomar Mt... Beaches about 1.5 hr away, Safari Park (Wild Animal Park), Lego Land: plus and more. Sea World and Disneyland and Tijuana, Mexico are all doable in less than 2 hr drive.

The house was kept clean and a fire pit set up for a nice camp fire!" - "I decided to take my partner here for a late Valentine's day gift and I wasn't disappointed. Such a charming little cottage on a hill overseeing a beautiful landscape. There's saloon right down the road within walking distance that serves great American food like burgers, fries, sandwiches, and more. The host communicated well, and was kind enough to let us have early check in which made our time that much more special. Don't think that our backcountry locals are the only wildlife around here! This place is full of wild animals like deer, fox, raccoons, bats, ground squirrels and chipmunks. Keep a steady eye open for rattlesnakes, badgers and mountain lions, oh my! Make some noise so they know you're coming. Be not afraid, they're honestly more scared of us than we are of them! And once night falls, keep your ear's peeled for our local pack of coyotes while you star gaze under some of the darkest skies in San Diego County! We love to encourage our guests to unplug and unwind, but in case you want to Netflix and chill, we have all the modern comforts of home covered here too.
The fully stocked kitchen has all the essentials to cook a delicious home-cooked meal (once you go to the market first!) and a Keurig coffee machine for that morning cup o' joe. There is a shared outdoor fire pit to enjoy the incredible surrounding landscape, and offers the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine after a day of activities with friends and loved ones. Park it right there! Private parking spaces will accommodate any two large vehicles.

We are also uniquely situated as a hub for popular biking, hiking, boating, fishing and motorcycle riding. - "I was looking for a quiet space to get away for a while and this was perfect. It's basic but fantastic location with access to lots of hiking trails, outdoor activities, within a short drive. Bring your own hair dryer, but all the other amenities are provided. The location is beautiful." - "Great place for a quiet trip away from it all!" - "This cabin was perfect for the little weekday getaway I was after. It’s a small quaint place perfect for two. It had all the amenities we were looking for; full kitchen, bathroom, shower, patio, and dining space. We spent most of the days up near Julian or hiking the Santa Ysabel Open Space reserve as recommended by the host. Our cabin was the perfect place to come home too after a long hike or stuffing up on pie! I would definitely recommend to anyone looking to explore Julian or Santa Ysabel."

This cabin has a cozy living room with a wood burning stove and a beautiful rock wall and spacious kitchen to cook your meals. Sit and drink your coffee or tea in the sun room, looking out at the mountain side where you will see several different types of birds.
The master bedroom nook with a queen size bed is tucked behind the bathroom. Climb up the attic ladder to two more sleeping spaces, a loft with another queen bed and an attic room with a twin.
The cell coverage up on Palomar Mountain is hit or miss. At this cabin, we have an AT&T booster but most other carriers do not get service. **We do not have WIFI. ** Our family enjoys being disconnected from the rest of the world(as the cabin does not have internet); playing games, reading books and taking hikes. We do have a TV and a DVD player with variety movies.
Our cabin located down a dirt road and 4wd is required to drive and park at the cabin, and for all other vehicles we have parking about 400 feet up the road. When it snows, all vehicles must park up the road at the parking spot.
- "Very nice stay. Enjoyed the quiet time to relax. Clean cabin. Nice follow up by owners or managers." - "Adorable cabin. Clean and cute. Did not need anything but food and clothes. Be sure to read all instructions about driving there." - "We had such a great stay! The cabin was cozy & cute and we really appreciated the nice touches like a fully stocked bathroom (towels etc), front room (board games, TV, etc) and kitchen (dishes etc). The location was great too, close to the state park which had great trails to explore. I would definitely stay again!"

- "We throughly enjoyed ourselves. The hosts explained the check-in process very thoroughly, including how to find the cabin. Can’t wait to return!" - "No complaints really. Everything was very clean, comfortable and quiet. Heaters ran very quietly and reliably. Communication was clear. Netflix was a bit challenging to figure out. But we eventually managed. Bring plenty of bottled water, as there is apparently a lot of iron in the water there. Doesn't taste good. Was helpful to have the full kitchen. And our dogs enjoyed themselves as well! Definitely recommend overall."

- "Absolutely easy check in. Cabin was very clean. Amazing views. Nice and quiet area. Very cozy feeling when you walk in. Only thing I would even have to say was, wish there was a fire pit outside. However, that does not take away from the amazing experience. Thank you so much for being able to enjoy with my family." - "Everything about this gem is wonderful! Perfect location for those of us visiting Josie's. The view from the porch is breathtakingly beautiful. It's quite, completely updated, both beds and shower are amazing. If you're on a bike, FYI the road is gravel but completely manageable. Property Manager was great too. Super flexible and accommodating. We will definitely be back for another getaway ♥️"

- "There was no liquid fire at all so we couldn’t use the fireplace" - "Nice, peaceful place to stay" - "Perfect for a solo traveler like me. It rained the night I arrived and most of the next day, so I was glad for the wood stove. The site manager allowed me to check in a little early and came quickly with a battery for the smoke alarm when I asked. Clean, great view of the valley. " - "Overall the place is very nice. The views from the cabin were amazing and the cabin is super clean and modern. They definitely put in effort to make the place nice. That being said, there's always some things that I think future travelers should know. The property does have a bar/restaurant at the bottom of the hill that is SUPER busy and loud on Saturdays. It's a biker bar and seems to get pretty crowded. You can't hear the bar from the cabins very much, but you DEFINITELY hear the Harleys etc. If you're goal is solitude and meditation, the sounds can be a bit jarring. That's probably not the case on weekdays, but Saturdays are busy. Finally, in the middle of my stay I heard several minutes of gunshots in the afternoon. I spoke with the property manager who said the neighboring property is owned by a person who "just shoots sometimes". That is not my idea of relaxation but not sure much can be done about that. But I do feel it's important for future travelers to know. I despise guns, so maybe that's just my hang up. Overall a wonderful stay and would recommend to others despite some of the noted anomalies. Cheers."

Cabin #3 has been completely remodeled like all our cabins at Hideout Mountain. It is also nestled on a hill with some of the best valley views around! The duplex cabin is stylishly furnished and has a shared large porch with Cabin #4. Both sides have their own patio furniture. And though it may not have a full kitchen like all our other cabins, it does have a wood-burning iron stove, mini-fridge, 40" flat screen TV, Wi-Fi, microwave, Keurig coffee machine with pods, cream & sugar included, recessed lighting, ceiling fan and an AC/heater to make your stay even more comfortable. This is an excellent duplex for a family of four! The kids can do their thing in Cabin #3, while mom and dad can kick it old school next door in Cabin #4! So close, yet so NOT far enough away? Don't worry, we can get you set up in a much larger, more private cabin elsewhere on the property! Sorry kids, one day you'll understand!
Speaking of understanding...We always knew if we rebuilt it, they would come! This cabin is one of 11 to choose from at the San Diego Mountain Lodge located at Hideout Mountain- a boutique retreat destination on 40 acres of unspoiled nature with an unbelievably cool, one-of-a-kind historic bar and grill called Josie’s Hideout Saloon. Open Friday-Sunday till 5pm, with live music every weekend, weather permitting. Ask us about renting out Josie's Hideout Saloon for your next epic once-a-year (or lifetime?) event! No gathering too small! Your live music stage awaits! Delicious catering options, DJs, fog machine, disco balls, anyone? What are you waiting for! Sound exciting enough? Now our backcountry locals aren't the only wildlife around here! This place is full of wild animals like deer, fox, raccoons, bats, ground squirrels and chipmunks. Keep a steady eye (and ear!) open for rattlesnakes, badgers, and mountain lions, oh my! Make some noise so they know you're coming. Be not afraid though, they're honestly more scared of us than we are of them! And once night falls, keep your other ear peeled for our local pack of coyotes while you star gaze under some of the darkest skies in San Diego County! We're also very proud to be a birder's paradise with more woodland birds here than you can shake a stick at! How about a chance to see (and hear!) turkeys, owls, scrub jays, cardinals, woodpeckers, hawks, vultures and even the Western Tanager to name a few! Stroll the grounds and let us know what you discover! We love to encourage our guests to unplug and unwind, but in case you want to Netflix and chill, we have all the modern comforts of home covered here too.
Before you turn in for the night, don't forget there is a community fire pit down by Josie's Backyard to enjoy the incredible night sky, while offering the perfect place to meet other interesting guests and enjoy a nightcap after a fulfilling day of local activities with your friends and loved ones. - "Fun little getaway" - "A really nice spot to clear your mind. Room was clean and well organized. Any problems I had were solved immediately. Wood burning stove puts out a lot of heat! But there is an electric heater/ac if needed. There is a restaurant /bar on site that is very good. Only two downside for me was the bed being a bit spongy to sleep on and every once in a while a super loud motercycle drives by, but it's fleeting. Not a huge deal. I would definitely stay again."

- "It's in the woods, but close to a biker bar. They were amazingly respectful of noise and were gone by 6PM on a Saturday night, so while the live entertainment was nice during the day and into early evening, it was quiet and peaceful at night. The cabin has all the basic needs and is very comfortable." - "Small cozy cabin in a good location in close proximity to Julian, Ramona, and other popular areas. Check-in/out was simple. Recommend for couples looking to take a vacation. We brought our dogs along and it was perfect for us!"

- "My husband, pup, and I live in San Diego, but wanted to get out of town. We found this RV at SD mountain lodge and it was perfect. We drove right up, check in was seamless, we enjoy the RV, patio, and fire pit. It was the perfect location to get to the Eagle Rock hiking trail we wanted to do. The kitchen was fully equipped with a fridge and electric stove. We brought premade food from Trader Joe’s and heated everything up easily." - "Wanted a one night getaway to destress. This place was very quaint and was perfect for the one night. Online manager answered all my questions and was very helpful. Allowed us to check in early (upon paying a fee). Some of the info about Josie's hideaway was not up to date as well as the early check in fee but it did not deter us from staying here. Will be back again."

- "Super cute place!" - "It was a fun, cozy experience! We loved it! Wished there were more activities to do :)" - "VRBO was clean and updated. Very small - which was expected. However we were unaware that the cabin is attached to another cabin, and the walls were thin. We wanted to get away for the weekend specifically to get away from the noise and crowds, and unfortunately the walls were very thin and we could hear everything in our neighboring cabin (and i'm sure they could hear us as well)... well kept, but not the quiet getaway we were hoping for."

- "My boyfriend and I stayed here for our Anniversary weekend and this little cabin was perfect! Amazing views, picnic tables and hammock chairs out front, wood burning stove, full kitchen. We had to salvage our own kindling wood outside because there were only large logs inside. Would recommend this to my friends and would definitely stay here again!" - "Small but very well appointed. Very clean, great location. Walked down to Josie’s Hideout Sunday afternoon for a burger and music. Cabin is just about half way between Santa Ysabel and Julian and lots of hiking trails nearby."

- "Awesome time , especially during mid week Suggestion, you might inform future guests Especially if older that the loft is a challenge I have bad knees and it was somewhat of a struggle to get back down. That said , the stay, property and staff were top notch! We plan on coming back soon and most likely will move to a cabin only because of the ladder to loft, thanks again Doug J" - "Cozy and clean..beautiful Mountain Views. I just wanted a quiet place to relax and this fit the bill nicely!"

We only stayed overnight and left in the morning darkness to an event but we will likely come back for another stay and do some relaxing! Host was excellent and timely in all communications! 🤗" - "This cabin is the perfect spot to get away from the hustle and bustle and unplug. My husband and I along with our two dogs have found our favorite place to escape too. Such a warm cozy cabin with some of the best decor I could have imagined. We found ourselves just looking around finding new details the whole trip. Thank you so much Monica for making this weekend one to remember."

About this space
This vintage horse trailer was reimagined into a Tiny house by Lane and Laurie as a couples project in 2018 which they completely gutted and remodeled using beautiful natural materials like wood, old fashioned wood cabinetry, handmade ceramic tiles and woven bamboo. Bluebird Tiny House is tucked into a secluded forest meadow, named for the bluebirds that spend part of the year there and there are miles of private trails to enjoy.
The space
It is a spacious 320 sq ft and is loaded with rich textiles and modern fixtures that make it feel much larger. The spa-inspired bathroom features a hand-carved, wood vessel sink, eco-dual flush toilet, rain shower, and free-standing ceramic soaking tub with oak canopy view. The 40’ long deck spans the length of the secluded tiny house overlooking the forest to distant mountains and has alfresco dining area and plenty of furniture for cozying as well as hot tub sited for star gazing and firepit seating. It is extremely private and has all the luxuries of home. Dog owners welcome! We have a large fenced yard adjoining the deck to welcome your fur babies, while keeping them close by.
Bluebird Tiny is one of 3 unique artisanal accommodations located on Birdsong BackCountry Retreat. It offers guests the opportunity to really get away from it all in a untouched forest and chaparral setting but offers all the amenities one needs for a comfortable stay. In addition, we have developed 2 forest therapy trails that will bring your ability to slow down and connect to nature to a whole new level and encourage you to try it using our MP3 audio guide..

- "This is our second time staying at Laurie and Lane's beautiful Bluebird tiny house, and both times have been incredible. It's not just that the tiny house is adorable and comfortable with every amenity you could want (bathtub, hot tub, hammock, outdoor games, grill, fire pit), but the property itself is pure magic. Aside from the beautiful trails on Laurie and Lane's property, there's also an awesome meditation center up the road with huge Buddha statues and tons of other hiking trails within a short drive. Don't miss the weekend beer spot Garage 79 at the foot of Chihuahua Valley Road! This is absolutely one of the best vacation rentals we've ever stayed in and the hosts are wonderful. If you're on the fence, do it. You won't be disappointed!"
