Overall it was a nice experience. " - "Loved that it was hidden away. The property was beautiful. Valer was easy. We came for Hells Kitchen but loved the casino. Lower limit would have been better. Looking for snow? When we are a winter wonderland, Cabin Fever has absolutely the very best snow access on all of Palomar. We front on County plowed, Crestline Road. There is a shovel on the deck if you need to clear the berm.
Cabin Fever has been a much-loved vacation rental since May 2013 with hundreds of wonderful reviews. Many guests have now returned multiple times. We have our first guest coming this year for the 15th time and many quite a few times. We are constantly updating and adding to the cabin and you'll find it immaculate.
Like to get away from it all but have the luxuries of home? Come away to this delightful, enchanting, cabin-in-the-woods. Slip back in time with the mountain-milled, cedar log siding and deck. This cabin makes your heart smile!
A stone fireplace is waiting for you with a rustic mantel claimed from the forest floor. Cozy up in front of the fire on comfortable leather furniture with some vintage antiques woven in.
Modern amenities start with the fully stocked, kitchen and bath with granite counters and a washer/dryer. There is a 50 inch 'Smart TV' to turn on for your favorite music , or watch a movie, and enjoy our high speed internet and Apple TV with so many options using your devices. Built in Mini-splits with both AC and heat on each level to click on while you get a warm fire going.
Browse from our library of books that take you back in time to days gone by, or inspire, intrigue or motivate. When was the last time you played Dominos? We have a collection of games to choose from, plus a few books and toys for the children.
Where will you sleep?
Upstairs is the bedroom with a queen bed and reading nook. Close the black-out drapes, turn on the Sound Soother if you'd like, and settle in to sleep in.
Across from the bedroom, above the living area is a ramp to a loft with 2x2s to prevent slipping but not comfortable barefoot. (Wish there was room for stairs!) There are two, twin mattresses suitable for children, since an adult can not stand up because of a low ceiling. The kids we've met at the cabin absolutely love the loft.
Bathroom
The only bathroom is downstairs. Nightlights, light the stairs and the bathroom. There is a Pack N Play for your little ones.
Palomar is a place to 'not do' too. Enjoy our propane barbecue while soaking up the sun on the deck and take in the chorus of birds, get lost in a favorite book or one of ours.
A trip to Palomar is not complete without going to the world famous Observatory (closed during snow). Browse the General Store and visit the Boucher Fire Lookout. (Our only restaurant is closed for repairs). You can take off on a hike on the many miles of trails in the State Park and National Forest or fish in Doane Pond.
There are several 'Field Trips' within walking distance to visit one farm with chickens, turkeys, goats and sheep for fresh goat cheese, milk and eggs. Our Palomar Roaster imports organic coffee and is a short hike up the road.
There are also wonderful day trips from Cabin Fever. However, one couple planned lots of outings but a couple days later, when they were checking out, totally relaxed, said, 'Next time maybe we will venture out of the cabin. It has such a wonderful ambiance and we loved it so much that we just had to stay in the entire time'. We have lots of options waiting for you at our Fun Things to Do link provided on this page, right above those nice Reviews that have come our way. Keep scrolling...
You're invited to be our guest and come away to Cabin Fever!
- "We had everything we needed at the cabin to be comfortable, and the instructions were clear and thorough. It's a really nice cabin! Definitely check out the Observatory while you're up here." - "Very comfortable and peaceful place for time away from work. Well stocked, plenty of nice seating in the living room, and deck view is especially great for those who love the woods and listening to the birds. Bonnie was very responsive when we had a small issue. Great hosts! We would absolutely stay here again!"

Please note, 3 night minimums for Tgiving, Xmas, New Year's.
Private cabin in the trees built in the early 1900s has been upgraded but retains all its rustic original charm. Watch eagles fly at eye level, clouds roll in, sunsets and moonsets in the ocean. Bobcats, wild turkeys, and deer regularly walk through the property. Decorated by owner with antiques and comfortable furniture (not all in pristine, new condition!) , large view deck for grilling and sitting in the sun, sauna. Dramatic infinity deck on mountain edge for sunset cocktails, morning yoga. Fully equipped kitchen, propane grill, tv, dvd player. Three bedrooms each with a queen or full bed, two couches could accommodate kids. Short drive from hiking, the Palomar Observatory, fishing at Lake Henshaw, entertainment at Harrah's Rincon Casino. Wonderful place to spend a snowy weekend, but 4 wheel drive and chains are needed on the few occasions when snow is deep. Some guest complaints: cluttered [cluttered with board games, coloring materials, telescopes, astronomy, bird, Palomar history books, maybe cluttered just a little]; cobwebs [if you search, you can probably find one or two, cleaned thoroughly after every guest]; feels like we're housesitting [hmmmm- this is a complaint?]. Best guest comment ever: 'It's clearly a well-loved and special place.' BINGO. Thanks, Emily. No dishwasher, I'm afraid.
Note: 3 night minimum for Xmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day weekends.

WINTER BOOKING ADVISORY!!!
Winter is snow time, which is good and bad. Caltrans has a station up on the mountain and they start plowing the paved roads very quickly when snow starts. Unfortunately, there is nobody up on the mountain who plows private drives, and my cabin is about 500 feet up a dirt branch road that is not plowed. If you plan to be there at a time when snow is predicted, your options are to park near the paved road (but be sure not to park right on side of the road where your car will interfere with plowing or be covered by snow pushed aside by the plow), or plan a long day of shoveling yourself out by hand. I’ve done this shoveling myself before, and it takes a good while. One guest last winter took 8 hours to do this, and they were not happy campers by the end of the day. If you have long time existing reservations and there is a massive storm predicted to hit just before or during your stay, I will of course promise a no penalty cancellation if you chose not to go. Being up there with snow is a wonderful experience, as long as you have supplies and can relax and enjoy.
House rules: treat this old place with courtesy and common sense: recycle, clean up reasonably after yourself, turn off lights and cooling/heating when not needed and on departure, close and lock doors and windows when leaving- sometimes I don't get up to clean for several days.
- "We loved our stay here. Comfortable, clean, and the most gorgeous views. Definitely recommend!!" - "This quaint mountaintop house is simply amazing! With warm, homely charm, and absolutely breathtaking views… it is well-stocked, clean and peaceful. Big fridge and plenty of space to relax. You should see the sunsets here. We are in love with this beautiful place!" - "The house is as described and pictured. Has pretty much everything you'd need. It was a nice stay for me and my two young kids (8 & 10). The kids loved the 'rustic' nature of the place!"

- "This home was perfect for our group. We loved the property and just spending time out on the deck. Michael was an incredibly gracious host and made things so smooth and easy. I would come back to this place without hesitation!" - "Great view with a large deck and lots of property. Had a great time. Very well stocked kitchen." - "I had the most profound experience at Michael's humble home. From the moment I arrived, I could feel the love he and the land had been cultivating together. There's real magic happening at this place and it pulled at the heart cords of everyone in my party. I personally can say I had a life changing experience that will stick with me until my final days. If you want PEACE AND QUIET, you have found a unique & enchanting retreat.
For faster service TEXT me 619-871-9354.
The Lilacs was the FIRST VRBO listing on Palomar Mountain in historic Bailey Meadows (near but not part of Bailey Meadow Resort, which is currently closed). We've been on VRBO since 2005 and still open for a romantic getaway, serene encounter with a nature or a quiet, comfy family retreat.
We do have a caretaker living at the back, opposite side of the entry at a lower level, but on the property, so please be respectful and remember the quiet hours 8PM-8AM.
The Lilacs is a beautifully restored, cozy 1920's Redwood cabin on Palomar Mountain just 1:25 minutes from San Diego. The cabin has 1) Master bedroom, 2) a small room with desk/dresser & ladder to the LOFT for the adventurous sleepers, plus 3) a futon sofa-bed in main living room, where there is the original rock hearth. ALSO a large, full-glassed in, sun room, a complete kitchen (new stainless steel stove/oven, microwave, dishwasher, washer/drier, cookware and more).
Grandma Bailey's cabin turned 100 in 2024!... and is simply FULL of fun, atmosphere, historic knickknacks and special vibes.
The original Redwood walls and timbers were hand-assembled by craftsmen 100 years ago. I restored it all and worked hard to preserve the original character and charm; including the hand-made cabinets, plank walls & doors. Then I totally upgraded the bathrooms and kitchen.
The cabin is located on the ever-peaceful Evergreen Trail in the Bailey Meadows area, by most accounts the most historic and quaint part of Palomar Mountain (a heavy day of traffic on Evergreen Trail is 2-4 cars a day). Sorry, this is not a place for parties, absolutely none.
Besides relaxing, there is lots of scenic outing and lots to do on Palomar and the surrounding region.
IF YOU ARE FROM SAN DIEGO: Palomar is a piece of High Sierras environment just 1.5 hours from down town. Amazing what SD County has to offer! This Cabin sits on the cozy, shaded side of the mountain. Palomar Mt. State Park is awesome and just 5 minutes away. World-famous Palomar Observatory, Julian (the 1800's quaint Gold mining town) and Anza Borrego State Park, are scenic drives close enough for an outing. We are near to the Bailey's Resort on Palomar, but without the traffic or campers or congestion of Idyllwild, Big Bear, Julian or Lake Arrowhead, and less expensive too.
IF YOUR ARE FROM OUT OF San Diego: There are many activities within an hour of Palomar Mt... Beaches about 1.5 hr away, Safari Park (Wild Animal Park), Lego Land: plus and more. Sea World and Disneyland and Tijuana, Mexico are all doable in less than 2 hr drive.

- "The cabin was definately something special. We didn't expect the beautiful surroundings and morning birdsong to be that perfect. Much bigger than it seems in the photos and everything you could possibly need. Cozy but so much space to move around. Clean and welcoming. Perfect for our couples escape. Recharge and lazy or go wandering on exploration hikes. Seriously magical. We will be back. Bring food n drinks. Everything else youll need is there and the owner is lovely. Thank you."

This cabin has a cozy living room with a wood burning stove and a beautiful rock wall and spacious kitchen to cook your meals. Sit and drink your coffee or tea in the sun room, looking out at the mountain side where you will see several different types of birds.
The master bedroom nook with a queen size bed is tucked behind the bathroom. Climb up the attic ladder to two more sleeping spaces, a loft with another queen bed and an attic room with a twin.
The cell coverage up on Palomar Mountain is hit or miss. At this cabin, we have an AT&T booster but most other carriers do not get service. **We do not have WIFI. ** Our family enjoys being disconnected from the rest of the world(as the cabin does not have internet); playing games, reading books and taking hikes. We do have a TV and a DVD player with variety movies.
Our cabin located down a dirt road and 4wd is required to drive and park at the cabin, and for all other vehicles we have parking about 400 feet up the road. When it snows, all vehicles must park up the road at the parking spot.
- "Very nice stay. Enjoyed the quiet time to relax. Clean cabin. Nice follow up by owners or managers." - "Adorable cabin. Clean and cute. Did not need anything but food and clothes. Be sure to read all instructions about driving there." - "We had such a great stay! The cabin was cozy & cute and we really appreciated the nice touches like a fully stocked bathroom (towels etc), front room (board games, TV, etc) and kitchen (dishes etc). The location was great too, close to the state park which had great trails to explore. I would definitely stay again!"

Spacious throughout with excellent light and views of cedar and oak trees from every window. Very quiet and peaceful neighborhood, with birds winging by (including an impressive turkey vulture), a charming rope swing in the oak by the driveway, a fire pit, and a secret treehouse (for very little ones). All four of us loved it." - "Everything was perfect!"

Welcome to the Weekender! Escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life to discover this rustic A-frame cabin retreat. Nestled atop Palomar Mountain among the oaks and pines, this property is both stylish and comfortable, and truly one-of-a-kind. Made up of 3 unique A-frame cabins - all thoughtfully designed with cozy rustic boho touches - the grounds feature lots of outdoor space & amenities, as well as easy access to hiking and ziplines.
You'll have private access to a fire pit with Adirondack chairs, 2 large decks, a bocce ball court, hammock, frisbee golf, horse shoes, and corn hole. The grounds feature a modern, chalet style A-frame cabin with 2 bedrooms and 1 bath, as well as 2 mini A-frame cabins, one of which is a bedroom with a half bath. The 2nd mini A-frame is a universal space perfect for meditation, yoga, reading or lounging with a view. There is plenty of space indoors and out for stargazing, cozying up with a book, or just drinking in the sights and sounds of the wilderness. The property is equipped with yoga mats, books, movies (and a DVD player to keep it classic), games, a record player and records for your enjoyment.
This is the perfect spot for family vacations, weekends with friends, outdoor enthusiasts and romantic getaways!
Things to know:
You'll be surrounded by trees and wilderness which makes you feel like you're truly "away from it all." As with any mountain area there are wildlife and bugs, but we do our best to limit as much as we can.
We have WiFi but be warned that it's not the fastest. The area is limited and the speeds are as fast they can get.
We have AC units in the main cabin only. For heat, there's a wood-burning fireplace with firewood and kindling provided. We have space heaters, but we ask they're used sparingly and not at the highest temperatures.
There are motion cameras on the exterior door of the main cabin for guest security.
- "Super fun and lots of games and amenities to keep you busy. The best part was the trails by the fire tower in the park" - "Cabin was well maintained and very clean with a lot of extras for a comfortable vacation. WIFI was also excellent. Property is well off the main road for a quiet and privacy. Deer and other wildlife came around at the back of the cabin. Great views of the valleys beyond." - "The property was lovely. Any other time of year might have been a better choice than the weekend we chose because of the bugs and heat (late June)- which is of no fault of the owners/managers (in fact they did try to offer us additional A/C and had plenty of bug spray on hand). Our 4 year old thoroughly enjoyed the tree swing and we loved seeing all the wild visitors (lizards, chipmunks, squirrels, deer, blue jays, blue birds, woodpeckers, etc). The mattress was the most comfortable I've slept on in a VRBO- we loved it. The rain shower was lovely. It was a good location for hitting the casino, Julian, SeaWorld, and going out for our anniversary in Escondido. Thank you for the lovely stay."

- "Great tiny house on Palomar Mountain. It was clean and as described. It is tiny but a good layout. I went for a romantic get away but the power went out, we couldn’t cook dinner or take a hot shower. It was freezing cold at night without the heater working. The owner did not respond to the electrical issue until the next day when we were checking out. The upstairs loft bed didn’t have a curtain for any privacy. The unit is very close to others on either side. The access codes didn’t work and it took us 30 minutes to get in. They offered a discount for an upcoming stay but should have offered a partial refund. "
