I am a Gibraltarian living in London - like most Gibraltarians I love the sun and the Mediterranean food of southern Spain. I love to visit as often as I can - our Casa is my family's favourite place to come together - whether that is my husband and kids or my large extended family who live on the Rock or close-by in Spain.

Sotogrande is a large private estate. It has its own secure manned entrances. It is a mixed community of people who live and work there all year round plus holidaymakers from all over Europe. It offers a classic southern European setting with beaches, golf, tennis, padel, water sports and easy access to the Costa del Sol and Costa del Luz. Gibraltar is 20 minutes drive and Malaga is 60 minutes using the easily accessed toll road.

Good, safe, sandy beaches are five minutes away by car but the whole coast is one long beach - and beach beds and shades are available on almost all beaches these days.

THE VILLA
Our villa is a perfect for a family (or families) with older children and teenagers.

It sleeps 10 across 4 double rooms and one twin room.

The main house has three double ensuite bedrooms.

The master bedroom also has a jacuzzi bath. The annexe has a double and a twin room plus small kitchenette area. The large pool (12m X 4m) is set in the spacious mature garden which has ample sunny and shaded areas.

The annexe apartment is perfect for a family of four or as we use it for giving guests or teens their own space.

The large kitchen/diner is well equipped with modern appliances and cookware whether like me you love to cook or like my husband to fire up the bbq or the traditional charcoal chimney.

Eating outside is one of the best things about Villa life.

The separate outside utility room has washing machine, dryer and spare fridge/freezer.

There is an Avocado fruit tree.

There is a car port and/or easy safe external on street parking.

LOCALE
There are three main supermarkets within five minutes drive - Supercor (a Waitrose equivalent), Mercadona (a Sainsbury's equivalent) and there's a Lidl.

In 5 minutes walking distance is the Paniagua complex where you will find great Spanish coffee shops, bakery, hairdressers, newspaper shop, pharmacy and a couple of good restaurants.

The Sotogrande Marina is five minutes drive - perfect for an evening stroll or meal or an ice-cream (helado) - look out for Ke which is the main eatery on the water or visit Lionel Messi's Hotel MIM - and see one of his Ballon D'Or trophies.

The nearest small town is Pueblo Nuevo - a working community - which is also 5 minutes drive - here are plenty of lovely breakfast (desayunos) and coffee shop choices plus some small grocers one of which is open on Sundays - not the case for all the main supermarkets.

AND BEYOND
If you head East towards Marbella - you'll find the classic Costa del Sol of beachfront towns like Estepona, San Luis de Sabanillas and San Pedro.

If you head West towards (and beyond) Algeciras you will find the Bahia Water Park - a great day out. And from there it's the Atlantic coast with world famous surf centre Tarifa and miles of deserted beaches. This ancient fishing coast is much less developed than the Costa del Sol and there's lots to explore.

And, of course, north Africa and the Moroccan coastal towns are only a 30 minute hydrofoil away if you want to sample the heady buzz of Tangiers.

The 'Grill room' has a large barbecue and a wood-burning brick-oven for our guess to prepare fabulous country stile meals
When you are ussing the barbecue and your family and friens are sitting the kitchen patio, you have a perfect triangle for celebrating meal, since you can bring food to the patio from the kitchen and from the barbecue room

The house has 2 outdoor patios; one at the entrance of the house and the otherone connecting the kitchen-livingroom area with the ' Grill room'

The garden by the pool was the best, surrounded by a beautiful view of the countryside. It is fenced and this was important, since we had two very young children in the group. The air conditioning worked really well, we had to use it a lot since we had a heat wave for a few days. The barbecue is great and there is also a paella and a paella ring available. The location is beautiful and very peaceful. Grazalema and Zahara de la Sierra, two of the most beautiful white villages of Cádiz, are very close to the house. We enjoyed one morning in La Playita (very close to the house) and also did a nice hike by a nearby river. Eugenio was very nice and helpful. He came every morning to clean the pool and water the garden. We will not forget this wonderful holiday!"

The patio around the pool is tiled with local stones, the south facing patio is the perfect place to enjoy a day in the warm shade while overlooking the variety of trees in the garden and another patio offers comfortable outdoor furniture for outdoor dining and a BBQ Weber.

It is a house that is both cool and fresh in the summer (all the bedrooms have shutters with mosquito nets) and cosy in the autumn and winter months (there are solar-panels, a gas-fired central heating and an open fire). Previous guests have enjoyed, in particular, the spacious rooms, the enclosed pool area with the big sized pool (11x5m) and the choise of sitting-out areas on the terraces and in the romantic garden.

The living areas, both inside and out, are spacious and open-plan, and have been created with families and groups of friends in mind; yet each of the five bedrooms, as well as having an en suite bathroom, has its own terrace, balcony, or garden, so there is plenty of intimacy too, when you want it.

The house has two main entrances: one on to the Beach Level from the path that leads up from the sea; and the other on to the Pool Level from the parking area at the end of what is a quiet cul-de-sac. From the beach, you enter a courtyard, which has a bedroom suite on either side and heavy wooden doors in the middle taking you into a large hall and games area (complete with ping-pong table) and then a staircase up to the Pool Level and the second main entrance. This level contains the third suite and the living area, which is basically made up of a large (50sqm) open-plan sitting/dining room and kitchen with sliding glass doors that open on to the terrace and pool, and a glimpse of the sea beyond. The large terrace has an eating area and a sitting area, and the pool is visible from both. The terrace extends to the pool, a sun-lounger area, and the large barbecue area at the end, overlooking the tops of the pines growing on the Beach Level. From the main terrace, a traditional whitewashed staircase winds its way up to a more intimate terrace on the Upper Level, the sea views from which give the house its name! The Upper Level is also home to the two remaining suites: one faces east, with a balcony that enjoys the early morning sun; and the other west, its balcony looking over the Atlantic. From the first-floor terrace there is another outside staircase that takes you up to the roof terrace, where there is a large roof top with panoramic views over the Atlantic on one side and a sea of green (pines) on the other.

Al Mar works well for both small groups and large (thanks to its different levels) and also in every season. The lush vegetation in the gardens and the house’s open-plan design (plus air-conditioning should you want to use it) mean that the summer temperatures are always pleasant; and the underfloor heating and clever combination of wood finishing with the traditional Andalusian tiles all make for a cozy atmosphere in the cooler months.

A walk of about 300m will take us to the local shop, pharmacy, a couple of bars and restaurants, and childrens’ playground. Roche also has its own tennis and padel courts and five-a-side football pitches. In the summer months, there are several beach bars/restaurants to choose from within walking distance, some of which are now staying open all year. A 5-minute drive will then provide you with a far larger selection of both bars and restaurants. You could spend a wonderful holiday here without a car, and just hire bikes; but, assuming you will have a car, it’s 15 minutes to Conil, 20 minutes to the hill-top village of Vejer-de-la-Frontera, 30 minutes to Cadiz, 40 minutes to Tarifa and Jerez, and 90 minutes to Seville, all of which are well worth visiting.

It is located in a very quiet area, in El Mayorazgo, about 3 or 4 minutes drive from Conil (3.8 km from Conil). The nearest beach is Puntalejo, and is about 3800 meters away and it takes about 5 or 6 minutes to get there.

It is a newly built villa (2008) and has a living area of 100 m², is completely fenced with high fences that give it great privacy and has outside barbecue area, large porch, swimming pool, toilet, garden with lawn and private parking within the plot of 643 m².
