Fortress Cabin on the West Rim
Apartment
Canyon, Texas, USA

The stronghold of Fortress Cabin takes its name for the centerpiece of its view gazing at the Fortress Cliffs along the east rim of Palo Duro Canyon State Park, a protected six miles of cliffs overlooking the Grand Canyon of Texas. The bluff’s look the same way the first Texans saw it — unspoiled. The steep margins of the Fortress Cliffs consist of bright, banded layers of orange, red, brown, yellow, and white rocks that represent four geologic periods. Adding to the cliffs scenic grandeur are numerous pinnacles, buttes, and mesas. Doves Rest Fortress is a place of exceptional security, privacy and refuge.

Cabins in Canyon
Doves Rest - ChairLift Cabin
Apartment
Canyon, Texas, USA

This “aerial lift” of a cabin takes its name from the Sky Ride concession that operated at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the 1960’s. The original ride’s abutment is sitting next to this cabin reminiscent of the good-old-by-gone-days when station wagons and family vacations were the norm, and state parks were a favorite place to take them. A series of chairlift seats moved excited park visitors from the canyon floor hundreds of feet above to the top of a mesa that can be seen below from this cabin. Now, excited ChairLift cabin guests unwind and enjoy magical moments at dawn and dusk when the golden light plays over the soaring cliffs and rock spires of Palo Duro. One of the best features of the fantastic view from this cabin is the interplay of blue sky, brick-red rock and lime-green vegetation. ChairLift is the perfect Palo Duro Escape for the nostalgic and adventuress traveler.

ChairLift is a two-bedroom, two- full bath, in a very functional and cozy 1,000 sq. ft. design. The cabin features a wood burning fireplace, covered patio and built in Propane grill. The fully equipped kitchen offers everything you need to make you feel at home. Clean linens and towels are provided for your comfort along with extra blankets for cozy nights.

Guest Reviews:

- "Excellent all around! Beautiful inside and out. Will definitely be back. Watched sunset, moon rise and sunrise, all from the front porch or side drive." - "We always stop here for a few days in between softball tournaments in Colorado and Dallas to relax and unwind. AMAZING views, wildlife everywhere, stars at night are unreal, and most of all quiet!! We have stayed in two units. The Fortress and Chairlift and both were fantastic. Go see the show one night at the state park!"

Comanche cabin on the west rim
Apartment
Canyon, Texas, USA

“Marúaweeka,”

(“Welcome” in the Uto-Aztecan language spoken by the people) to Doves Rest Cabins – Comanche!

The Comanche’s were fierce warriors who reached present-day New Mexico, the Texas Panhandle and Palo Duro Canyon by 1700. During that time, their population increased dramatically because of the abundance of buffalo. Though the tribe was large, they never formed a single tribal unit, but rather, were divided into some eight to twelve independent groups. Sharing the same language and culture, they sometimes fought, and other times at peace, cooperating one with the other, similar to the modern family today!

Comanche in their native language is “Numinu”, meaning the People. And, Comanche Cabin is just that…for the People. We are proud to bring you this newly constructed home with a universal and accessible design to accommodate a wide variety of guests. This single floor house has been specially designed to accommodate people of all ages, genders, sizes and physical abilities. 36” wide doorways and hallways, generously sized bathrooms with roll in shower, staggered height kitchen countertops, front entrance and back patio low thresholds for wheelchair ease of access are some of the notable features that make Doves Rest Cabins – Comanche accessible to the PEOPLE.

Comanche is a three-bedroom, two- full bath, in a very accessible, functional and cozy 1,440 sq. ft. design. The cabin features a wood burning fireplace, covered patio and BBQ grill. The fully equipped kitchen offers everything you need to make you feel at home. Clean linens and towels are provided for your comfort along with extra blankets for cozy nights.

Unwind and enjoy magical moments while the golden light mixed with clouds plays over the expanse of Palo Duro Canyon State Park. One of the best features of the lovely view from this cabin is the vistas one can see in an 180 degree angle.

Only 16-miles from the city of Canyon, home to West Texas A & M University and just 30-miles south from Amarillo and historic Route 66. There is plenty of shopping, restaurants, museum’s and all local amenities to enjoy in the “city.”

- "The property manager is so kind and friendly. She showed us around the property. The horses came over and said hi to us while we were walking around. The property is just a few miles from both the canyon itself, the city called canyon, and Amarillo. We stayed during the cold storm in early January and the power actually went out for an hour or so. The manager was right there to help us out with more wood for the stove and even offered to put us up in a hotel for the night. We stuck it out and the power came back in. It just made the experience more memorable for us. We highly recommend this nice little cabin. It’s so quiet and dark at night so you can see all the stars"

Chisholm Cabin on the North Rim
Apartment
Canyon, Texas, USA

Situated on the storied and historic Marshall Ranch, moments from the entrance to America’s most beloved State Park - Palo Duro Canyon, Chisholm Cabin is a destination on most traveler’s bucket list. One of the best features of the lovely view from this cabin is the proximity to the sheer edge of the canyon wall. Flint scrapers and arrowheads can still be found on this grouping of North Rim Cabins. The site where these cabins were constructed was used by Comanche’s as a “butchery,” and nearby Buffalo Draw was where the Indians drove buffalo over the cliff as a hunting technique.

Blending the West Texas legendary ranching past with the relevance of Americas second largest canyon, this cabin is sure to engage the senses and captivate the imagination of our guests. Longhorn Cattle roam the adjacent pasture and the steep margins of the canyon view consist of bright, banded layers of orange, red, brown, yellow, and white rocks that represent four geologic periods. Modern but rustic, this cabin is immaculate and fully furnished.

Guest Reviews:

- "Great visit. The views from the porch and bedroom are awesome." - "Loved the Cabin. It was too cold for us to do any hiking. We are going back in a month and staying at same cabin. We hope to see more of the canyon and get in some hiking." - "Spacious, clean, beautiful location!" - "Our family stayed in the Durango & Chisholm cabins and everything was better than we could of imagined. I know this sounds over hyped but they were clean, fully stocked kitchen for Thanksgiving (they even had a Crock Pot) and a wonderful view of the canyon. The location is 3 minutes from the Park entrance and there is a new convenience store (Sad Monkey Mercantile) with a Wine bar and a place to read a couple of blocks away. The host was readily available and very helpful the couple of times we called. we will definitely rebook if we come back to the park."

- "We loved our stay - unprecidented views of the canyon. We even saw the rare Barbary sheep from the deck, and the herd of longhorns of all ages on the road to the house. The house is great, and the merchantile down the road is great to drop in for a quick bite or for things you may have forgot. Loved it and plan to come back!" - "Amazing view. Very clean. " - "We loved the great view of Palo Duro canyon. " - "We had an incredible stay and a very relaxing time. Wish we could have stayed longer. The scenery is one that will not be forgotten. The only area of improvement would be communication. We never received check- in instructions after booking. I sent several messages on VRBO to host. 2 days later and day of check in I texted the listed number. Reached out to VRBO. Then finally called which should have done first. Not hearing anything until check in and having to reach out so much was a little frustrating. Overall we loved it and wont forget our time there."
