Welcome to Casita de Indigo…
Your stand-alone casita is centrally located to all the offerings of the area--you, your kids and your pups will make some lifelong memories here in Northern New Mexico! To the south is the renowned Rio Grande river where you can have a mellow float, or brave a ride down class III/IV rapids. To the north is Taos Ski Valley, home of world class terrain. In between are epic hikes, numerous galleries and unique shops, delicious food, and culture--Taos truly is a little slice of heaven. Welcome!
The Casita is a "Taos-house" by definition. Originally a single-room dwelling built in the early 1900's--with thick walls, low ceilings and massive vigas--the original owners completed a series of remodels to expand and ad the infrastructure needed to turn it into the modernized small home that it is today. We hope that you will find this combination of bygone and contemporary as charming as we in Taos do.
We have labored to create a welcome and safe space that provides multiple varied housing opportunities on our property. Children from the three families living here will be seen playing outdoors along with their cats. One of the parents is also our artist in residence, and has studio space in the third garage adjacent to the covered parking--you may see her coming and going next to your vehicle. Residents of an upstairs apartment will be seen traversing the spiral staircase across from the entrance to the Casita. Our family lives in the first house with the green roof. The other two families reside in their recreational vehicles in the downhill barn space.
If complete isolation and seclusion is a requisite of your vacation, ours may not be the space for you. Your pets are welcome, and we thank you for keeping them leashed when you walk them outside. You are welcome to enjoy the river overlook, and we ask that you please respect the privacy of the other residents on the property as you pass by to access the river.
If we can help you plan your stay in any way feel free to reach out. We look forward to providing you a home-away-from home while you explore the wonderful offerings of Taos. Bienvenidos!
- "Unique place with care and thought by host. little things count and the high-end places lose their way." - "This is a very sweet peaceful casita. The bed is very comfortable and the casita warm and cozy. It had everything I needed and some things I didn't expect. The host is very responsive and easy to work with. I'll stay here again for sure. Can't wait to get back." - "Great for 2 people and 1 dog. Okay for short stays but has small refrigerator that doesn't hold much food. Very easy access to Taos. Also the bedroom has a big comfortable bed. A little tight getting from the kitchen area to the bathroom."

Nearby are SMU’s Fort Bergwin, the family-friendly Sipapu ski resort, and multiple opportunities to fish. Enjoy modern southwest design in the newly renovated living spaces and plenty of hiking trails right outside your door—all just miles from shops, art galleries, and fine dining in Taos.
- "This was a great place to stay. Very clean. Beautiful surroundings. Only minutes from Taos center" - "This cabin was perfect for our visit to the area. It's close enough to town for eating and activities but far away enough to feel like you are in nature. The place is very clean and well stocked. Having the bedrooms on 3 floors allowed for privacy and space from each other. Recommend this place!" - "The cabin was very clean and the atmosphere was wonderful. Lots of space and comfortable. Additionally the owner was prompt when responding to questions. Definitely a unique experience as it’s out in the forest a bit which is scenic but yet still a short drive back into town. Quiet and spacious with many of the amenities of home. Would definitely consider staying here again in the future whenever back in the area. Tip - cellphone coverage for us was minimal at best so be sure to have the Wi-Fi info ready ahead of time. Once connected the Wi-Fi is fast and stable (we were able to steam movies)."

At the end of the county road is this very private and secluded guest casita that borders the 15,000 acre Truchas Land Grant. Views of the Rio Grande River Valley & Jemez Mountain range from the deck of the casita are breathtaking. Relax and unwind at this magical destination. Offering a range top and refrigerator, Toaster Oven, Kuerig coffeemaker and outdoor grill. Only one hour to Santa Fe or Taos. 40 minutes to Sipapu Skiing. Great hiking and photography. Nearby fishing opportunities. Your stay in Truchas will have you coming back year after year.
Please be reminded, one of our policies is "No Pets Allowed".
This small cabin (casita) is located in a very remote area of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range at 8000 elevation. We encounter field mice, rats, moles, chipmunks, squirrels, skunk, raccoons, bobcat, coyote, deer and elk, mountain lion and bears. We have seen all of these animals near and around our homes. We do contract with a local pest control company to help us mitigate the rodents and they conduct monthly checkups and bait the exterior and interior boxes.
- "We were very happy in the casita that is well equipped and has splendid viewswith quiet surroundings. Only one drawback was the poor quality of our sleep due to a very uncomfortable mattress. We were both so concerned about waking up with some back or hip pain that we decided to sleep each on one end of the bed across the width of the bed on the second night. My husband feet stood out but at least our respective body had more support and in turn we got more rest and avoided possible pain. We would like to suggest the owners to change the mattress to offer comfortable nights to guests. We would like to go back once the mattress is changed to a newer and firmer one. Otherwise, we appreciated all the other comfort included."

Our little oak boxcar was built in 1898, and it rode the narrow gauge rails from southern New Mexico trying to reach Denver. Purchased from the Alamosa yard and moved to Pilar, NM, near Taos, Stephen used it to design passive solar systems when not building homes in Santa Fe. It became our place for romantic rendezvous before we built our family home.
Today it is our guesthouse. During several stages of remodeling we have tried to keep an authentic narrow-gauge boxcar feel to the space. We have added a Yodel gas stove, a Pullman kitchen with dining nook and closet, and most recently a bathroom with a very boxcar-esque sliding door. Our family members vie for the space when they are in town, and you can see why. It is so welcoming, and unique even for unique Taos. It isn't hard to imagine you are traveling the world on the historic Chili Line, even though there is wifi, a flat-screen TV, state-of-the-art lounging chairs for reading or TV viewing. The boxcar is powered by solar electric.
For the weary traveler the queen bed is firm and comfortable. Bamboo rayon sheets add a touch of elegance to the boxcar charm. We use only nontoxic, 'green' household products throughout. The 40' flat screen TV can be viewed from the bed or the lounges. The couch is a 'Taos Bed', easily made up to sleep a third guest. The Pullman kitchen includes china and wine glasses, a two-burner electric stove, a small fridge, a sink and a toaster oven. Perhaps best of all, the 'slipper' tub invites leisurely baths or hand-held showers while viewing hundreds of acres of agricultural land, seasonally resplendent with coyotes, rabbits, soaring hawks, nesting magpies, and cows grazing and sometimes calving.
Our property has a hot tub shared with the owner's, adjacent to the owner's home, which sits in a secluded, outdoor space, allowing the contemplation of sunrise, bird flight, cloud shift, stars and moon. Don one of the boxcar bathrobes and your flip flops and take a dip.
Quiet, private and on a dead-end road, some call the boxcar a sanctuary. We are located in Ranchos de Taos, 3.5 miles from the Taos Plaza, and just 40 minutes from the Taos Ski Valley. Come experience a bit of old railroad lore while visiting our beloved Taos, New Mexico.
- "The pastries and coffee were a great start in the mornings, followed by a relaxing soak in the clawfoot tub watching the horses play in the pasture and an occasional hot air balloon climbing and descending in the distance. Evenings were quiet and peaceful. All the essentials were provided and the hosts were very accommodating in making my stay enjoyable." - "Our stay in the boxcar was great. It was so cute and private. Taos is a very interesting place to visit. Our host was wonderful. She was very helpful and friendly, as was her husband. I highly recommend anyone going to this area, give it a try. You won’t be disappointed ! John and Karen"
