The Michael Martin Murphey (MMM) Cabin is located 3.5 miles from Red River on Bobcat’s Peak. We purchased the home from Mr. Murphey in 2004 and have tried as much as possible to keep the cabin as it was when he spent time in it writing songs, perfecting his music and enjoying its solitude. A number of memorabilia signed by Murph adorns the house. On occasion he and his family rent the cabin back from us to enjoy the seclusion of a quiet get-away in the mountains. Murph says he feels at home at the cabin because we haven't changed it very much. The cabin sits on six acres at an elevation of 10,200 feet and borders the Carson National Forest. The views to the West are of meadows where elk and deer come out of the forest in the summer, sometimes in the winter for a late evening and early morning snack. Summer brings the hummingbirds, chipmunks, ground squirrels, Stellar jays and grey jays (camp robbers) and chickadees, occasionally a wild turkey or a bear. We do have neighbors but most have jobs and are only able to get away a few days now and then, two of our neighbors are full-timers but work commitments seem to keep them away from home quite a bit. We are close by down at the Bobcat Mountain Lodge, if you need something.
The MMM cabin is an authentic log cabin, logs 12-16 inches, two porches, one on either side of the house and a back deck with a small grill and a train grill/smoker made especially for Mr. Murphey. The porches have chairs for relaxing and the deck has chairs and a table for outdoor eating. Mr. Murphey ordered the logs from Tennessee and had the cabin built in 1993. The kitchen counter tops are of galvanized steel, per Mr. Murphey, made to stand fish cleaning, or anything else that needed doing when preparing food! The cabin dining area has deer antler chandelier and a dining table, with what we call twig furniture. Each chair has a sheep skin to ease the derriere a bit when sitting on the twig. The cabin has several twig rockers with sheepskins so that you can sit by the real wood-burning rock fireplace in the living area. We furnish firewood free for your use as extra heat in the winter and in the summer to just knock a bit of the chill off. Summer nights can easily get down into the 40s and 50s! Nothing feels as good as a warm fire, in a log cabin high in the mountains! Please clean the ashes from the fireplace before your departure and put them in the trash can at the back steps. This helps prevent forest fires. Please NO SMOKING in the cabin. If you are a smoker, please smoke outside and carefully dispose of all butts. New Mexico has been a drought for more than three years. A careless butt could burn our beautiful forests and our forests would not recover in our lifetimes. The living area has a flat screen TV. We have a number of paperbacks on our book shelves, games, and a couple of decks of cards for quiet times when you are not out and about. We do not have a phone. We are in process of getting Wi-Fi in the cabin. Wi-Fi is available at the library in Red River usually 3G or better.
The cabin has a washer and dryer for your convenience. The cabin does not have a dishwasher so don’t forget paper plates. We provide towels, linens, supplies, such as, toilet paper, dishwashing liquid, and laundry detergent and trash bags. The cabin has a coffee pot, toaster, crock pot, hand mixer, full set of dishes and silverware for six people, pots and pans, microwave. A half bath down stairs, with a sink and commode, the upstairs bathroom has a sink, a door closes to the commode and claw foot tub for bathing and has a shower curtain surround on the claw foot tub when showers are your thing. The two bedrooms are upstairs. One bedroom has a queen-size bed; the second bedroom has a queen size bed, and two twin beds. The cabin will sleep six people comfortably.
Parking is available for your four wheeler and snowmobile trailers with easy turn-around. The cabin property connects to the Carson National Forest. There are a few short logging roads that you can ride/walk on, but careful not to ride/walk on private property. Check with the Forest Service near Questa for required ATV permits. You can also walk into the Carson from the cabin to hunt. Northern New Mexico has a large population of elk. The area around the MMM cabin is Area 53. Trout fishing on the Red River, Fawn Lakes and at the town ponds is great fun and usually successful as the Red River is the most stocked river in the state of New Mexico. Eagle Nest Lake is 12 miles away and stocked with rainbows, perch and salmon. Northern Pike are also being caught in Eagle Nest Lake. The MMM Cabin is across Highway 38 from the Enchanted Cross Country Ski area and 3.5 miles from the Red River downhill ski area, approximately 25 miles from Angel Fire Ski area, 35 miles from Taos Ski area. Our neighbors at Bobcat Wilderness Adventures has snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, and horseback riding and Cowboy Evening, an evening of great food and entertainment just across Highway 38. Michael Martin Murphey provides an evening of entertainment as his venue on Bitter Creek (check his website for dates and details). Oh, and don’t forget River Rafting on the Rio Grande in the summer, hook up with a Rafting company in Taos, if you have a need to gamble there is the Taos Pueblo Casino.
Red River has a small grocery store and a number of restaurants. Some of the more popular restaurants require reservations. Red River has a celebration for every holiday and seems to make some holidays up! It is a fun town. At the MMM cabin, you will be close enough to town to get into town for all the “doings” yet far enough away to enjoy some quiet relaxing time too.
Four-wheel drive is an absolute necessity in the winter from mid-October to mid-April. We plow the road and the MMM cabin driveway as needed. We have a 'Boss' snow plow and chains on our truck to clear the road down to the highway. You will still need a 4-wheel vehicle in the winter.

So you want to stay at the MMM cabin……

February 2016 Homeaway/VRBO has started charging the traveler a fee of 4-10% on a sliding scale. This fee does not come to the owners but goes directly to Homeaway for "improvements to" and advertising of Homeaway. I hate this for our guests, but can't do anything about it. My apologies for this additional fee.
You will be charged the nightly rate, plus 8.4375 tax, and $100 cleaning/supplies fee per stay. Most times we have a three (3) night minimum. A Refundable Damage Deposit of $200 will be charged initially and refunded to your credit card if no damage is found when cleaning the cabin. Bag and dispose of your trash at the dumpsters in Red River or Eagle Nest. Also, wash your dishes and put them away. Trash or dirty dishes will result in an a $25 charge to your damage deposit. Occasionally, due to commitments, we have to hire cleaning folks to clean the cabin and they don’t like to wash dishes or take out trash, thus the $25 charge to your damage deposit for either one. We clean the MMM cabin most of the time ourselves and we don’t like to wash dishes or take out trash either! Any damages will also be charged against your $200 damage deposit. It is not our desire to keep any portion of your damage deposit so do your dishes, take your trash and respect the MMM Cabin like you would your own home and you will see your damage deposit refunded to your credit card in 5-7 days after departure. If something doesn’t work properly, tell us and we will take care of it. We love the MMM cabin and believe you will too. Thanks in advance for treating the MMM cabin with the respect you would like for your own home.

It’s an expensive place to stay if you have to drive a hour to eat and ski. We were not aware the town was going to be deserted. We’ll have to return during the ski season. The town and A-frame is adorable!"

Not only is it in the perfect location of town to shops, restaurants, and the Red River Ski & Summer Area, it sits on the river and is around the corner from the Zipline and fishing ponds! Not to mention the hot tub for all of its guests to use! This home is a two-story property with a couple steps up onto the deck to enter. When you first come into A-Frame 3 you will find the living room accented with a soft sofa that folds down into a bed perfectly aligned with the wood-burning fireplace which captivates you as you watch the untamed flames dance amongst the wood. The large flat-screen TV allows you to comfortably sit and watch cable and a DVD player. This home does not provide cable, however, we do offer Netflix for you and your party to enjoy or movies brought from home! Bear Hugs has a sleeper sofa in the living room that can be folded out to make a queen bed. Joined with the living room are the cabin's small kitchen and dining area. In the one-bedroom, this home has you will find a queen bed with access to the hall bathroom that has a shower as well as a cute claw foot bathtub to enjoy a nice soak. - "Bear hugs was a great little cabin with the perfect combination of being close to skiing and feeling like a true getaway. I was drawn to bearhugs because of the clawfoot tub. I knew that each night after skiing I would enjoy a soak and feel refreshed and good to go the next day. I would highly recommend bringing Epsom salts to soothe your sore muscles if you’re here for skiing.. the kitchen had pretty much everything we needed. The bed was very comfortable, the cottage was clean. Guest services was very quick to send out a technician when we had trouble with one of the heaters the technician was there nearly immediately, he was quick to resolve the issue, which has to stay, while the repair was done, because all of our stuff was in the cabin, however, after the visit with the technician, I would have felt totally comfortable letting him come in while we were not there. We will definitely be back❤️"

The sounds of the river flowing alongside the property welcomes you as you pull up the drive to this cozy 2 bedroom 2 bathroom cabin. Bedroom 1 has a queen bed and a bunk bed with 2 twin beds. Bedroom 2 has a queen sized bed. In the living room you will also find one queen sized sleeper sofa, sleeping up to 8 mountain men and southwestern sweeties comfortably. No Washer/Dryer. Upon entry of this A-Frame, you are standing in the updated kitchen. There are decent counter space and plenty of room to get around to the living room. The living room is equipped with a flat-screen TV and DVD player, giving the guests an option to watch cable or movies brought from home! A-Frame #5 also provides free WiFi for all of its guests to use during their stay! You will have plenty of seating arrangements in the living room for everyone in your party. there is a Brand new sleeper sofa and two brand new recliners on this main level also give you the option of folding the sleeper sofa out to make queen-sized bed for additional sleeping! Upon entering Our Red River Cabin, you are greeted by the spacious living area, full kitchen, and open dining area. The Living Room has a large Tv with satellite / DvD and wood burning fireplace. Also on the first floor you’ll find the master bedroom with a queen bed and large master bathroom with a tub/shower. There is a full size futon in the living room.

Take the stairs up to the second floor and you’ll discover the second bedroom with a queen bed, a large Tv and DvD player. The loft area on the second floor has a full size futon. Both the loft and bedroom two have access to a full size bathroom. This property has a total of 1694 square feet.

Step outside and soak in the spectacular sights of the surrounding mountains. The kids will love being able to run around the semi-fenced in backyard while the parents unwind on the wrap around porch.

You will get the full mountain experience while you relax on your large deck and listen to the Red River flowing in the background or gather around the large fire pit for roasted marshmallows on a cool summer’s night or snowy day.

As soon as you walk in, you’ll get that mountain feel with the tall aspen ceilings, wood-burning fireplace and floor to ceiling windows. Modern features include dimmable recessed lighting in every room, high-speed Wi-Fi, a Smart TV in the living room and bedrooms, and soft-close drawers and cabinets. With the high speed WIFI, it makes it perfect for those who work remotely.

After a long day of fishing or skiing, you can head back to your cabin and make dinner in the fully equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances, or head outside to the gas grill for a family barbecue! - "We and another family stayed at this beautiful Mountain View home for Spring Break. The home is gorgeous and well maintained. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to cook family meals and allowed us to avoid having to take our small children into town for restaurant meals throughout our stay. The town of Red River is less than 10 mins away and was easy to access for shopping, coffee shops, and of course skiing/sledding/tubing. There is also a shuttle that runs throughout town, which is great, because parking at the base of the mountain is somewhat limited. Our only hiccup was that our key/access code was not ready when we checked in (early) and we left our name and number for the property management company to call us when it came ready. They still hadn’t called by the time our actual check-in time came so we went back by the office. Eventually, they gave us our entry information and we headed to the house. After that, our stay was smooth sailing and we had an amazing time. Would stay again!"

This adorable cabin is located in town on High Street, which means you are close to everything in town. The front porch welcomes you with a large and inviting adobe fireplace. Imagine sitting on the front porch either in the morning or evening talking about the day's adventures while roasting a marshmallow or two by the means of this enchanting fireplace!

Upon walking into your cabin you will see that there is a cozy open-floor plan. The living room has a comfy couch, ottoman, electric fireplace and Tv for your relaxing pleasure. Adjacent to the living room is your fully equipped kitchen. Not only does it have everything you need to make a meal, it has a margarita machine and ice maker! How cool is that? The open floor- plan has a wall-bar that has seating for two.

The cabin has 2 bedrooms and 1 full bath. The first bedroom has a queen bed and Tv in the room. You will notice that both bedrooms have stylish barn doors that go well with the decor. The second bedroom has 1 full-size bed and Murphy twin bunk beds. So if you need extra space and don’t need the extra beds, simply fold them up and you are good to go.

If you feel like grilling, this cabin has an electric grill, so no need to worry about propane or charcoal. Upon looking around at the decor you may have figured out why the owners call this cabin Red & Blue For You. If you haven’t figured it out yet, then we are happy to tell you that the owners are a fireman and police officer. How cool is that!

This property has enough room for trailer parking, but for only one trailer, so feel free to bring your ROVs and hit the trails! Sorry this property is not pet-friendly, so the family dog will have to stay home this time.

- "It was larger than we had originally expected. The hot water gets very hot and stayed hot whenever we needed it. The king size bed is quite firm. The pans are not nonstick, so they’re less easy to clean. All the appliances worked as they should. Kitchenware is all there available. It was a nice stay. The Smokey Bear Cabin is our brand new 1 Bedroom cabin facing Mainstreet. It resides in the place of our old historic cabin 15 and has a nice vaulted porch that is perfect for watching parades and all the activities. The Smokey Bear is a New Cabin but stills offers the Rustic Charm Rio Colorado Cabins is known for.

The space
The bedroom has a Queen bed and TV. The Cabin also has a full Kitchen, spacious bathroom with a shower and a living room with a pullout couch and a large screen TV. The Kitchen offers ungraded appliances and amenities such as a dishwasher, ice maker, keurig pod/regular coffee maker, blender, and crockpot. The Smokey Bear Cabin has a mini-split heater and air conditioning system. The Smokey Bear cabin can accommodate a maximum of 4 people. We do not allow pets or smoking.

Take a Red River dirt road through the Aspens and past the teepees to this fully restored 1940’s Cabin by the Creek that's within hiking distance to several old mining camps.. A 4×4 vehicle and possibly snow chains will be necessary to access our Cabin by the Creek property during the winter season. Enjoy the quiet mountain atmosphere down by the creek as you sway side to side in the hammock.

Located off a dirt road miles up Bittercreek Trail, this two bedroom one bathroom cabin welcomes groups of up to 6 with its southern charm and old-fashion decor. Spend a long weekend in this log cabin and you’ll take a trip back in time to the good ol’ days at your gramma’s house. Start your morning off with a cup of coffee on the oversized deck that overlooks the creek and the yard with a hammock, picnic table, fire pit, and a horse shoe pit. Check out the lower deck where you are immersed in nature among the beautiful aspens, close to the sounds of the mountain you’re lucky, you might even see some of the local wildlife stopping by to say “hello”.

One bedroom has a full-size bed, one has a queen-size bed and there is a loft with a twin bed and a twin trundle. There is one full bathroom with a shower and a 1890s clawfoot bathtub. Also included is a full kitchen with all the basic cookware, even a waffle iron, and a microwave, but no dishwasher. This cabin has a Tv with a DvD/VcR player for watching movies, no cable. Books, toys and games are provided for the kids. It has both a wood-burning and a gas log fireplace. Propane grill included. For winter guests, chains and/or a 4Wheel Drive vehicle is Required. The cabin is miles up a rocky, uneven, dirt mountain road. It has High Speed WiFi access but no satellite TV. The High Speed WiFi makes it a good choice for those who work remotely. No trailer parking. No Washer/Dryer. This property has a total of 850 square feet. Well water contains a high mineral content and is not advisable to drink. Water from the city tap is provided for consumption.

Enjoy my 1500 square foot home in Red River. The convenient and huge entryway has tons of room for all you stuff (bikes, hiking gear, skis etc...) I have fold up chairs, tennis rackets for your use while in town.

The first floor features both bedrooms and a full bathroom. The large master bedroom has beautiful high end furnishings and a super comfy bed with Egyptian cotton linens. Cuddle up in bed and watch your favorite tv shows on the large flat screen smart tv. The second first floor bedroom has a queen bed and another Smart TV.

Upstairs you will find the large living room with high aspen ceilings, a 65 inch flat screen television, wood floors and great mountain views. The huge kitchen and living room are separated by a two sided fireplace.
I have the kitchen stocked with everything you could possibly need including spices, condiments, sugar, etc....

The upstairs deck with its amazing mountain views are the highlight of my home. I have a smoker and a propane grill on the deck for outdoor cooking.

The 3 televisions boast a DVR for recording your favorite shows with a Directv package including upgraded channels and HBO.

Also upstairs is a second full bathroom with a full size washer and dryer.

If you have a dog I will also "Request Money" for the $150 pet fee plus tax.

Cabin 19 is near the river and faces the pond. It has a nice lawn in front of it as well a gazebo and grill area . Cabin 19 is a two bedroom cabin with 2 queen beds and a sofa bed in the living room, full kitchen and a bathroom with a shower. The focal point of the living room is the original large rock wood burning fireplace. This Cabin is non-smoking and pet friendly for an additional fee.

INSIDE

Our recently renovated lodge is rustic, yet bright throughout. The main living area is open for easy mingling. With windows in every room, you'll always have a view of breathtaking scenery or wildlife.

The living room has been updated with new sofas, cozy blankets, and a dog area. You can enjoy the flames of the corn stove and/or radiant heat from a propane wall stove. A large TV with Roku sits on the wall if you get tired of gazing at the pine trees or blue jays.

The kitchen has quality gear and supplies beyond what is typical in a vacation rental home. Quality knives, pots/pans, waffle maker, and more stock the kitchen. We also have everything needed for morning or evening beverages.

A small dining table (seats 4) is in the kitchen with views of Wheeler Peak. Bar seating for 4 is available at the kitchen counter.

Up a spiral staircase, you'll find a magical kid's retreat. The loft includes bunk beds (2 singles and 2 doubles), an entertainment center (Roku, DVDs, Wii U), and board games. Adults are welcome to sleep here as well. Frankly, it's cooler than the normal bedrooms!

Bedrooms: Grown-ups can retire to two private bedrooms on the main level with comfortable bedding and fantastic window views.

Main bathroom: In the main house is one bathroom with a shower. It is small but functional.

DETACHED BUILDING: RESTROOM, LAUNDRY, & BAR

The garage—amazing views with doors opened—has been converted to a bar & dining area. It contains an 8-person picnic table, outdoor cooking gear, & yard games.

The back side of the building has a bathroom with heated floors, shower, as well a washer/dryer, plenty of storage for skis/gear, and a ski boot warmer!

OUTDOORS

Outdoors, you'll have plenty of space to soak in the sights and sounds of Carson National Forest. A wraparound porch surrounds the house with ample seating and shade or a wind block. The back porch has a large, 6-person hot tub overlooking wide-open space.

The 1-acre property located in a rural, residential area has a spacious front patio & fire pit. A large backyard gives you space to throw the pigskin around or play fetch with the dog. You will have plentiful gravel parking, including pull-through space for longer trailers or RVs.

With a $125 non-refundable pet fee per stay, we do allow a maximum of 2 well-behaved, potty-trained dogs.

Dogs are not allowed on the sofa or bedding. They must be fully cleaned up after. If messes or damages are found, guests will be charged an extra cleaning fee from their deposit.

WINTER DRIVING: The lodge sits at 10k ft elevation, getting a massive amount of snow in the winter months (late Oct - April). While the roads & driveway are typically plowed fairly quickly, it is highly recommended you drive a vehicle with four-wheel drive and high clearance.

OTHER SEASONS: The mountains are a wild place, but high winds, rain storms, wildfires, & more can put a damper on your travel or outdoor plans. We cannot predict, nor control, the weather conditions at our lodge or surrounding areas.

CANCELATION DUE TO NATURAL EVENTS/WEATHER? Our standard cancelation policy applies in ALL weather conditions/forecasts unless there is a MANDATORY EVACUATION order for our specific location issued by state or county government, or the lodge is not in operational condition. If that is the case, we will notify upcoming guests immediately.

*** SECURITY CAMERA NOTICE ***

Our lodge is monitored by a security camera that faces the front patio and entrances--attached the side of the garage. This records footage 24/7 in case of an event of theft, damage, or other unforeseen problems. (Or to catch great footage of a bear wandering through!). The recorded video is kept secure and private while being stored, but deleted after a few weeks if no incidents occur. We do not have any security cameras on the interior of the home.
