- "I was in town for a very short period of time, but the Lamp Post Lodge was perfect. Easy access and everything worked flawlessly. The views are reason enough to come back!" - "Nice big room. No AC installed yet. Room was 78 degrees when I got there. Lots of goodies in the room. Hot water heating plate is used to make instant coffee. Tv channels available leave something to desire. Clean-self check-in. Owners responded to my text on temp right away. Shared kitchen in main area. It’s my second stay there. Not a lot of options in Westcliffe but this is probably the best for the $$."

- "My family and I really enjoyed our stay. Leanne was very nice, she came over the first morning to introduce herself and ask if we had any questions and Doug stopped by later in the week to check on us as well. The views are amazing and the cabin was better than advertised. I would recommend staying here if you are looking for a nice peaceful stay in the mountains. I made the mistake of draining the solar power by charging a hybrid Jeep that we received from the rental car company. Not having any knowledge of how these vehicles charge and how much power they consume we woke up to the emergency generator running and immediately unplugged. If you have an electric vehicle or receive one from a rental company like we did you should consider asking for a non PHEV or find alternate charging arrangements. Overall was a fantastic stay and we hope to be able to return someday. Thank you for your hospitality."

Angel House is not your usual log home. It was built with the care and attention to detail that only a custom log home builder and his artist wife might choose for themselves. They built it with their own hands and they wish to share it with those who would like to experience life in the woods AND a bit of luxury. It was featured in Log Home Living Magazine in May 2010, and in STUDIOS Magazine in Summer 2013.

Our cabin was built on plans that I had in my head for the 22 years that I served in the Army. It finally became a reality in 2009/2010, when I retired and we built our dream cabin in the Wet Mountains overlooking the 14,000'+ Sangre de Cristo mountain range in south-central Colorado. We had bought the land years before after a backpacking trip with the kids because of the solitude and views. Our cabin was built for our relaxation (my wife is still active duty) and our children's enjoyment. I need mountains, and there's a mountain view out of every single window in the cabin; north, south, east and west. The kitchen is fully stocked with all the latest appliances and utensils. The bedrooms are furnished with log beds that accent the cabin feel. The cabin is gently heated with in-floor radiant heat on the first and second floor, electric baseboard heat in the basement. The sauna is perfect for relaxing after a long day's hike. Lined with redwood, it heats quickly, easily seats several adults, and has a changing area nearby. The master bedroom has a beautiful east-facing exterior balcony overlooking the Wet Mountains for enjoying a coffee in the morning. The master bath has a double-slipperfoot tub, glassed in shower, and unique handcrafted vanity from Tennessee with granite countertop and vessel sinks. The main floor bath has a rain shower and heated air jets in the tub. The loft has a 52 inch LED Roku TV with Netflix/Prime/Peacock for watching movies, shows or the DVDs and VHS tapes we have of popular family movies. The kid's playroom in the finished basement has a 32 inch LCD TV with DVD player and Google TV. The 700+ sq ft of covered porch allows you to sit and watch the wildlife in the morning and evening, take in a passing thunderstorm on a summer afternoon, and relax and watch the red sunsets over the Sangres in the evening on the Adirondack chairs.
The nearby cute mining/ranching town of Westcliffe has a grocery store, bowling alley, lots of antique stores, art galleries, restaurants, some nice grassy parks and a great playground for the kids. On Wednesday mornings there is a Farmer's Market on Main St where the locals bring their goods to sell (don't miss the Amish baked goods, especially the large cinnamon rolls). Westcliffe is located in the Wet Valley, which is sparsely settled with very few lights; you will see more stars at night than you had ever thought possible. Of all the places we have lived in the world due to our Army careers, the nights at our cabin were the first time our kids saw the Milky Way galaxy. At the cabin it was easy to teach our kids how to locate the North Star using the Big Dipper, and using a star locator, we have found all the northern constellations, and several of the planets. A short while after sunset it is also possible to see satellites moving overhead, if you know how to distinguish them from aircraft.
We have 15 acres to roam on, with thousands more acres of National Forest and Wilderness Areas just a short drive away. The 100 mile Rainbow Trail along the front of the Sangres, and the trails into the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness can provide the most adventurous with days of glorious hiking. There are valley and mountain lakes for fishing and kayaking, with world famous Arkansas River white water rafting in the Bighorn Sheep Canyon a half-hour's drive to the North, or Class 6 rafting, ziplines and bungee jumping through the Royal Gorge.
The Wolf Springs Ranch has a bison herd, and Mission Wolf, (a wolf sanctuary) are both a half-hour's drive to the south. Your kids can play on our big treehouse that features a cargo net climb, and monkey bars. Day trips can take you to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak, the River Walk in Pueblo, the hot springs at Salida, the ghost towns of St Elmo, Tincup and others, Royal Gorge, Bishop's Castle, the historic mining towns of Rosita, Victor and Leadville (the highest incorporated town in North America) the mining/gambling town of Cripple Creek, the Gold Belt Tour roads, Mount Princeton Hot Springs, Joyful Journey Hot Springs, Garden of the Gods Park, and the Air Force Academy. There are literally thousands of miles of paved and dirt mountain roads, clothing optional hot springs in the San Luis Valley, and hiking trails up 14,000+ foot mountains. But don't let the many activities fool you, the cabin is in a very sparsely populated, beautiful, valley where you can relax. Located on a well-maintained dead-end dirt road, there is very little traffic that goes by the cabin.
There is a cell phone tower on the mountain nearby and in town that works with some carriers. There is a Starlink satellite connection you can use for phones, internet and streaming. But the cabin will make you want to shut off the phone and just sit and relax.
Keywords: Relax at our cabin, with top of the line kitchen, beautiful 360 views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Wet Mountains in South Central Colorado. Sit on the large covered porches as you watch the deer and other wildlife graze on the land, or listen to the coyotes call at night. Play in the treehouse, relax in the sauna, or just let the stress of life disappear in our mountain retreat. Whether using the double slipperfoot tub with a view, watching movies on the TVs in the loft or kid's playroom, cooking in the beautiful new kitchen, using the large sauna, or just relaxing on the porch, there is enough luxury in our cabin to keep everyone in the family satisfied. Minimum 5 night stay, Maximum two week stay.
- "The place was beautiful and very clean!! Room for everyone. Beds were very comfortable with everything we needed. We are looking forward to staying again in the future. Highly recommend!!" - "It was a beautiful home. The views were spectacular." - "Had a great time—Kids loved the sand pile and the master bath tub! The views were beautiful and saw some wildlife. House had everything our family of 5 needed, other than fans—we sleep with them and definitely missed them!"

Come stay at our rustic, but comfortable cabin snuggled in the foothills of the Sangre' de Cristo Mountain range at 8300 feet in front of Gibbs Peak with beautiful mountain and valley views all the way around, only 10 minutes North West of historic Westcliffe and Silvercliffe Co!!! AT THIS TIME NO ATV MOTORCYCLE OR OFF ROAD VEHICLE USE TOLERATED OR PERMITTED!! THERE IS NO ACCESS TO THE NATIONAL FOREST FROM THIS PROPERTY!! THERE IS NO SNOW PLOW OR REMOVAL!! It’s a very quiet, small community where few homes are occupied year round, with approximately 1acre which makes it the perfect place to "get-away" from it all. It is close enough to town for any needs you may have and is close to Lake DeWeese where fishing is available or sight seeing the beautiful San Isabel National Forest with hiking trails, Bishops Castle, Lake Isabel, the Royal Gorge and Canon City are only 40 miles away, and the great Arkansas River is about 20 miles and offers white water rafting, zip lines, tubing, kayaking, fly fishing and of course there is hunting in the mountains very close.
We have worked very hard to make our Cabin rustic but modern for an enjoyable stay for everyone. For convenience, we have installed wi-fi and television as well. The bed and hide-a-bed are new queen mattresses with the hide-a-bed upgraded to memory foam, both very comfortable. There is another couch in the living room for sleeping if needed. The living area is spacious with great views from inside as well. Kitchen, dining area is spacious and has a new gas range and dishwasher. The wood burning stove is just for looks and not useable at this time. Hot water heat is throughout the house, but there is no air conditioning as we've found open windows and fans are sufficient. The bedroom has a queen bed, dresser, large closet, all the amenities to make your stay comfortable. The bath has a tub/shower combination with jets in the tub to relax in after a hard day of hiking, hunting playing or just to enjoy. Everything is fully equipped, linens, dishes, etc. You can sit outside on the deck and enjoy the wildlife, and serenity of the area while cooking on the grill, all the while star gazing in the evening. There is ample parking for 2 or 3 vehicles. Unfortunately at this time, the property is not handicap accessible.
- "Cabin clean, comfortable and quiet. There was little to no traffic." - "We enjoyed our stay at this cabin. Saw several deer in the yard. Was fairly peaceful and definitely relaxing after a long hike." - "I was really excited for the stay here. After arriving it seemed perfect for a quiet getaway. Unfortunately we had to cut the trip short, but it had nothing to do with the quality of the property. The setup made checkout easy and Richard was very understanding. I would definitely stay here again and hope for better circumstances because the stars were beautiful from the back deck. Also the main bed was comfortable enough for my girlfriend and that is a huge plus."

Summary:
"Trails Head Lodge" is located 3 miles west of Westcliffe on 80 acres, in the middle of the Wet Mountain Valley. Referred to as "the valley floor". This area is your grandfather's Colorado: raptors, deer, expansive green pastures; cattle; meadows ranging from 80 to thousands of acres. All at the foot of the majestic Sangre de Cristo mountain range and its world class hiking/jeep/horse trails and high (11-12,000 elevation) mountain lakes.
The Space:
Trails Head Lodge, including the adjacent cabin (the ANNEX) easily accommodates 10 adults. The nightly base rate provides access to the larger cabin, or LODGE, with up to 7 adults in four bedrooms. The master suite is on the main floor and offers a king bed & huge bathroom suite with a jet tub and shower with a seat. A second king bed is located on the second floor. Two other bedrooms have a queen bed.
The Annex, which was the original cabin with its own exterior walls, is available for reservations of 8 or more guests, or to gain access to additional beds. The Annex is not rented separately, or concurrently except from January - April when each cabin is available at off-season, monthly rates. Great solution to winter over while build a house or just to work remotely and focus for a month or so.
PRICING for the ANNEX IS MANUAL: Please submit an inquiry for groups of 9 or more. The 8th guest costs $130 and each additional (guests 9-12) is $25 per adult per night. If your headcount is not yet set, book for 8 guests up front and we can adjust as your arrival date approaches. Likewise we manually price smaller groups who want access to the second kitchen or more bedrooms.
Combined living space is 3,816 sq. ft. but separated into two cabins, joined by an enclosed breezeway/laundry room, but no common exterior walls, separated by utility and boiler rooms, 6-8 feet wide. The set up is perfect for two families/groups who want a mix of social time and private time. The Lodge has a gas fireplace and the Annex has a tremendously effective wood stove. The Lodge is a bit more polished and the Annex more rustic.
The Lodge has both a "breakfast table" and a "dinner table" with seating for up to 14 persons.
Front porch is covered and faces the Sangre de Cristos to the west. The back porch is partially covered with outdoor table & chairs for six persons. Just off the deck is a fire pit for roasting S'mores. And, of course, a large gas grill is provided.
Guest Access:
Your group has access to the (steel pipe) fenced-in area (about 1.7 acres) around the Lodge/Annex complex.
Gaining access to the corral and barn requires paying a horse boarding fee of $70 per night for the first horse and $35 per night for the second through forth horse. Local grass hay is provided and included. Feeding and watering is "self-serve" by the guests. No other horses will be on property.
Up to two dogs are welcome but each carries a $60/stay Pet Fee. The fence around the residential area is designed to keep the cows in the surrounding pasture. It's is not a pet enclosure. Leashing is up to your discretion.
Inquire about live-in rigs. Permissible for short says; but, no dumping facilities.
The Neighborhood:
Trails Head Lodge & Annex are located in the heart of Wet Mountain Valley. Gibson and Hermit Trail Heads are only 3-4 miles to the west on dirt roads. Venable/Comanche trail heads are about 4 miles to the south... mostly via dirt roads. The Rainbow Trail traverses the Sangres, connecting Gibson, Hermit, Comanche, Venable and other trails leading to the high country.
Westcliffe is a 3 mile drive to the east on paved roads.
Getting Around:
Trails Head Lodge is accessible year-round with a regular "city car". Having a 4x4 vehicle will better enable your group to see more territory, even pop over to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve via Medano Pass. Or from the top of Music Meadows Pass look down on both the San Luis Valley and Wet Mountain Valley. The Jeep/ATV trails offer a great variety of difficulty or roughness. Consult the off-road guides that will be at the Lodge.
Other Things to Note:
From December though April both cabins are priced for monthly rentals. Inquire about one or both cabins. The off-season rates assume a separate group in each cabin, with no common walls.
PLEASE REQUEST CUSTOM PRICING FOR MORE THAN 4 BEDROOMS OR 9 GUESTS. THESES ARE THE TRIGGER POINTS TO RESERVE BOTH CABINS. GUESTS 9 - 12 ARE PRICED MANUALLY. FEEL BOOK FOR EIGHT GUESTS NOW AND SET AN EXACT COUNT CLOSER TO YOUR ARRIVAL DATE. This reduces amount of your deposit.
Interaction with Guests:
We enjoy meeting guests but at the initiative and discretion of guests. Key staff lives within 4 miles, so we can react to guest needs quickly.
We store tools and materials in the garage and barn, so one or more of our team will occasionally access those areas. We will coordinate timing of mowing or other outdoor maintenance tasks.

- "The cutest spot! We were in Westcliffe for a wedding and Bill and Sallie’s VRBO was absolutely perfect. We enjoyed our quiet mornings watching the wildlife from the porch. The house/rooms are all a perfect size. It had everything we needed and more, and check in was beyond easy. Highly recommend staying here if you’re in the area!!" - "Our family of four stayed for several nights at this wonderful cottage in the woods. Of all the VRBOs we've stayed in, this had the best amenities: laundry, toiletries, grill, dishes, utensils, seasonings, etc. And we loved the modern/barn decor. The owners really pulled it off :) Nestled in the willows and aspens, you have a lot of privacy and beautiful meadows to explore. We saw a porcupine, nighthawks, wild turkeys, and a doe and fawn. The hosts live in a nearby house on the property and are available if you need anything."

- "Beautiful cabin. Easily accessible. Loved the small Creek's constant sound, so relaxing. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a great place to relax." - "This cabin and surrounding property is gorgeous and perfect to for a relaxing get away" - "Thank goodness cabins like this exist! A truly special, peaceful place my family loved. We truly didn’t want to leave. Wet Mountain Valley is quietly one of the most beautiful places in Colorado. It’s been 25 years since I’ve visited the Westcliffe area. The running creek brought back many memories of our old cabin just up the valley. My kids played in the stream, panned for gold, collected rocks, and even caught a few trout. We watched a meteor shower, saw elk/deer, watched the hummingbirds, and walked the neighborhood. 10/10 would recommend if you want a peaceful place to stay away from the light and noise of everyday life and just simply enjoy the natural beauty of Colorado."

- "The cabin is amazing! Beautiful, roomy, well laid out and just a great place. No central AC, but it did drop into the upper 50’s at night so it was not really needed. Amazingly quiet and just what was needed for a nice relaxing stay! The star viewing was AMAZING! The little town is a 10 minute drive away and is a great little town. If you go into town try Sugarlump and get the Orange Julius! Thank you so much Tobias! We will be returning!"

- "We had the most wonderful restorative and relaxing week at the cabin. The house itself is so beautiful and comfortable, and with all the screen doors we were able to keep it cool and comfortable even in the summer. The kitchen had everything we could possibly need, and we loved having the huge dining table so everyone could eat together. The property was gorgeous and we loved exploring it. The kids would play outside near the house for hours, and a short walk took us to the creek for lots more fun! We also enjoyed day trips to Salida and Canon City/Royal Gorge and an afternoon on Main Street in Westcliffe. There are so many cute shops, restaurants, and coffee shops! We also spent an afternoon bowling at Cliff Lanes and it was so affordable and lots of fun. We really cannot recommend this cabin enough, and we cannot wait to come back again and again!"

Breathtaking log cabin on 35 private, aspen filled acres. Multiple live streams on the property, with trails connecting them. The sound of water can be heard from the front deck. Three mountain peaks can be viewed from reclining couches in the family room or in the six person spa. Endless night sky viewing. Reliable, fast WiFi. Close to national forest and 15 minutes from the adorable town of Westcliffe. Furnished in rustic, cabin decor. Come experience a slice of heaven.
The space
Our genuine log cabin sits on 35 acres, with a wrap around porch overlooking multiple peaks. The soothing sound of creeks can be heard from the Adironack chairs on the porch. We are 15 minutes from the adorable town of Westcliffe. In Westcliffe you can bowl, visit the Sugar and Spice Bakery, tour the historic Beckwith Ranch, meet wolves at Mission Wolf or drive by the mining ghost towns of Querida and Rosita. Westcliffe is designated a dark skies community. Bring your telescope for amazing night sky viewing!
Access to the Rainbow Trail can be found 5 miles away, on Hermit Rd. From Hermit Rd we enjoy the beautiful hike to the alpine Lake of the Clouds. We are 1 hour from Canon City, the Royal Gorge, fly fishing and whitewater rafting. The nearest skiing is Monarch Mountain, an hour and a half away. Make sure to you do not miss Bishop's Castle and Lake Isabel while you are here.
Inside the cabin you will find a kitchen stocked with cookware including crockpot, rice cooker, coffee pot and spices. You are welcome to use any non perishables left by past renters, but please double check expiration dates. All trash should be disposed of at the end of the driveway in the bear safe dumpster. We do not have recycling, so all trash can be mixed together. There is a large supply of board games in the dining area cabinet. Feel free to enjoy them.
The main floor includes a laundry room, dining table, family room with wood stove, two bedrooms and a full bathroom. The first bedroom has a queen bed and the second bedroom has two twin beds. Upstairs there is a loft with flat screen tv, couch and Roku. The large master suite has a king bed, sitting area and workspace with a desk facing the peaks. The master bath has a shower and large jetted bathtub. There are blackout curtains in every bedroom.
The house is heated by radiant in floor heating. The logs keep the house well insulated. Leaving the thermostat around 65 in the winter keeps the cabin quite toasty.
Cattle may be on the property at infrequent times. An invisible fence keeps the cattle in their secured areas. If you see cattle near the cabin or on the road please contact us immediately.
The internet is fast and reliable: download speed of 22.5 Mbps and upload speed of 2.8 Mbps. My husband is able to hold virtual meetings while our three teens stream movies on their phones.
There is a Traeger grill on the deck. Please brush the grill after each use. There are pellets for the Traeger in the pantry. If you need help with its use my husband has created a You Tube video with directions. The url for the video can be found inside the house manual that is located on top of the piano.

Fire risk: NO smoking on the property or inside the cabin. NO open fires allowed on the property. There is a wood burning stove fireplace in the family room and ample firewood on the porch. There are fire extinguishers under the kitchen sink, near the fireplace and on the landing of the upper floor. Please see posted fire evacuation routes inside the front door.
Damages: If a guest causes any damage to the property, or its contents, guest authorizes owner to deduct cost or repairs/replacement from the security deposit. All damages should be reported to the owner before check out so repair/replacement can be arranged before the next check in. A message will be sent to a guest prior to any deductions from the security deposit.
Safety: We work our best to keep everything in perfectly functioning order. We aim to treat you as we would treat family. There are some things outside of our control, however. We cannot be held responsible for any injury, illness or accident that may occur on the property. Please use caution when walking around the property. There may be icy patches in the winter. Guest access
Entire home. The home sits on 4 acres total since we own the lot next door. The pond is private and belongs to us - it is not suitable for swimming but rather enjoying its beauty. You may play on the creek as it runs adjacent to the property. I love sitting by the creek and reading or sometimes working on my NY Best Selling Novel and sipping some wine.
The laundry room is accessible to you and for your use. We keep our cleaning & maintenance supplies in there so please only use what you need and encourage guests not to take anything home out of our supply. Please do not leave children unattended as it houses both our heating and water system.
During the snow months the driveway will be plowed along with the subdivision roads when more than 9 inches accumulate but they are slow to plow. In winter, it is highly recommended that you travel with a 4wd vehicle as well as a shovel in the event you get stuck. We are not responsible if you get stuck and our crew may not be readily available to assist.
Other things to note
Our cleaning staff does a full sanitary and disinfectant clean of the cabin.
Well water is used and it is very good drinking water. Remember to please conserve water when you can - if you use excess water "Phyn" our smart water system will shut down for safety reasons and may take some time to reboot.
Remember that this is out in the country so expect country living with wildlife, some bugs during different seasons, get used to old ways and be patient - everything slows down with country living.
A Creek Runs Through is 1/2 mile west of the Historic Pines Ranch and is ideal lodging for attending a wedding there.
Please note there is no motorized access to the rainbow trail from the property (only bike and foot access), motorized access to the rainbow trail is within a few miles at the National Forest Trail-heads. Plenty of parking available for your toys; motorcycles, side by Side and ATVS. ATVs are allowed on subdivision roads only for the purpose of accessing the county road system. No ATV use on the property except for the driveway.
There is an iron and ironing board in the laundry room along with any cleaning supplies. If you spill anything on the carpet, sofas or bedding, please clean right away. If we have to dispose of anything due to stains, the cost of replacement is charged.
Extra linens and pillows and comforters for sofa sleepers can be found in master closet, family room cabinet or bunk room in a clear bag.
Extra fans can be found in master bedroom. There is a portable AC unit in the master bedroom. The mountains tend to be cool most of the time and our log home is well insulated.
Two fire extinguishers can be found in the kitchen cabinet to the right of the dishwasher and one in the kitchenette in family room below the sink.
It is understood that you the guest agree not to use the premises for any activities or purposes that violates any criminal law or governmental regulation or to engage in any illegal activity while on property – such use or activity will result in immediate eviction and forfeiture of all fees.
This is a private community and all rules must be followed - you can find those rules in our cabin book in the cabin. The community caretaker patrols the community to ensure there is no violation of any community rules.
No fires or use of fire pit on property as it is located nearly adjacent to national forest. Also, no smoking ANYWHERE on the property. If you smoke, this is NOT the place for you.
Guests should be aware that there is no daily housekeeping service. Linens and bath towels are provided by Host. Please do not remove towels, linens, or any other items from the house.
In the winter, you need a four wheel drive, snow plowing is slow in the community so please check the weather forecast before heading out. You are in the country so everything moves slow including dispatching handyman and snow plowing.
There are seasonal bugs out in the country. We can have miller moths in mid-May until early June. While the entire migration may last up to six weeks, peak activity typically lasts 2-3 weeks. We have a LED moth trap operational during this time and plug-ins that deter them as well.
Cluster flies are often seen in autumn (between fall and the first frost), congregating on the sunny exposures on the exterior of homes and because we are a log home, they find their way into the house and typically congregate around the large sunny windows. The biggest nuisance is that they will die and they will need to be swept regularly.
In the fall, country little mice may make their way in. We do have mice mitigation externally and internally. Inside we have low frequency plug-ins in every room to deter them and a few mice traps outside under the deck. This is all part of country living and having a stunning log home.
The owners are not responsible for any accidents, injuries or illness that occurs while on the premises or its facilities. The owners are not responsible for the loss of personal belongings or valuables of the guest. By accepting this reservation, it is agreed that all guests are expressly assuming the risk of any harm arising from their use of the premises or others whom they invite to use the premise.
Damages to Premises:
Should guest, or guest's invitees, cause any damages to the premises, or contents thereof, that require repair or replacement, guest authorizes owner to apply such cost to cure out of the security deposit being held by host for the booking. All damages must be reported to the owner before check-out and upon vacating. Any missing or damaged property or inventory will be investigated and discussed rationally between both parties prior to any settlements and compensation arrangements. However, Guest acknowledges that they could ultimately be charged up to the full amount of the item replacement, the amounts required to conduct the necessary repairs, or if necessary to replace the missing items at full replacement value within 14 days.
