Would you like to visit a place where you have the chance to observe otters, squirrels, alligators, deer, raccoons, woodpeckers, blue herons, hummingbirds, cormorants, fish, and many other species of Florida wildlife in their natural habitats? And, you can do this from the comfort and safety of an observation deck or dock over the river.
If you prefer, you can just sit on the screened porch overlooking the beautiful St. Marks River and soak up the peaceful solitude of a completely unspoiled environment. As the sun goes down, you will be captivated by the rhythmic melodies of the frogs and crickets, guaranteed to soothe your soul.
Please note: for liability reasons, we do not provide boats of any kind You can rent them locally at TnT Hide-a-Way rentals on US98.
When you book a stay with us, we will send you a long list of places to visit and things to do such as Wakulla Springs and the St Marks National Wildlife Refuge. The Sceineyard
Most of the roads, ponds and levees in St. Marks NWR were originally built in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), part of Roosevelt’s New Deal after the Great Depression. The ponds range from fresh water to salt, accommodating the many species of migratory birds passing through Florida’s Big Bend. We take several hikes around ponds to observatories and along the levees, marveling at the variety of grasses and wildflowers. Butterflies are everywhere, including the migratory monarchs passing through the NWR on their way to Mexico for the winter.
Toward the end of the Civil War, the area of St. Marks was strategically important to the Confederate Army for delivery of supplies and to the Union Army trying to capture the capital, Tallahassee. The Union regiment, which came ashore here at the Lighthouse, was repulsed at Natural Bridge (where the St. Marks River goes underground), but not before destroying several bridges and the salt factory, essential for preserving food for the Confederate troops.
Our cabin is a mere 4 miles from the Lewiswood Farm, a popular wedding venue, Mention you are having or attending an event at the farm for a discount in our rate.
Note: The Seineyard in Woodville was sold and is now the Driftwood. Have eaten there many times since changing ownership and it has been excellent. The Seineyard is still open in Crawfordville if you wish to drive closer to the coast.
Before we approve your pet, we must know your pet's breed, age and size and if he/she will be on good behavior if you have to leave him/her alone in the Retreat? A pet fee of $75 will be charged upon approval. Our concern is that your pet is safe and so is our Retreat.
To find out how our guests who have been on the tours enjoyed their trip, please read about them in our guest comments. Hope you will give them a call and take advantage of this special opportunity while staying at the Retreat. Happy paddling!!

This is our second stay here and we know we will be back again. We so appreciate the beauty and natural setting of this place. In our two visits here, we have enjoyed seeing deer, owls (right outside our windows) and numerous Florida birds hanging out on the river.
Our hosts Floyd and Carolyn were attentive and available to our needs. The Driftwood restaurant (new name) in Woodville has definitely become one of our favorite places to eat (awesome food) and we make sure we visit it every time we are blessed enough to come back to visit.
Thank you Floyd and Carolyn for sharing your Retreat

This place is amazing! We have fallen in love with the breathtaking and extremely relaxing environment.
The jumping fish were hysterical! However, the cows walking in the river topped the fish. The house was perfect and had every thing we needed.
Thank you so much for an amazing weekend. We will be back!

Well, what can we say except the location was superb. The interior design is a testament to all your hard work and imagination. Spotlessly clean. So tranquil and relaxing sitting on the dock in the morning.
The beds are some of the most comfortable we have had the pleasure to sleep in. The nighttime chorus (of the crickets and frogs) is something we will always remember. Great fun trying to catch the uncooperative mullet in the river, but we did catch one at the Seineyard restaurant in Crawfordville and it was mind blowing.
So, Floyd and Carolyn, thank you very much for a wonderful Retreat.
“Haste ye back”

What an awesome experience! Our accommodations were unsurpassable, and, to say the least, our trip was a success.
Now that we found you it goes without saying you’ll be stuck with us and our soon-to-be FSU student. We’ll be seeing you again.

We really enjoyed our stay at the St. Marks Retreat. We paddled our canoes on the St. Marks, Sopchoppy, Wacissa and Aucilla rivers. All lovely. Tons of birds, otters, alligators and turtles. We also went hiking at Leon Sinks and biking on the St. Marks Trail.
This cabin is delightful- quiet, peaceful and very clean. There are more rivers and trails to enjoy, so we will be back.

Floyd, it has been a pleasure meeting you and staying at the St. Marks Retreat. After working 11 years in the hotel industry, I have to say this is the cleanest and one of the best decorated properties I have ever seen. The nature and river next to the Retreat is good for mind, soul and body.
The St. Marks Retreat is the Best!

This was our first sort of wilderness vacation, and the Retreat didn’t let us down. Very serene and relaxing. Spotted a very large owl outside the cabin (approximately 2 ½ feet tall)- very wild and scruffy looking. We saw many deer on the road coming in and more up close in the wildlife refuge. We also spotted a black bear in the Apalachicola National Forest.
We enjoyed the good fresh seafood at the Seinyard Restaurant. The cabin was indeed clean, quaint and comfortable. The location and atmosphere proved to be the natural and relaxing stetting we desired.

What a wonderful vacation! This cabin is so cozy. Everything was clean and comfortable. We had a great honeymoon here.
Thank you for the fruit, snacks, coffee and hot chocolate. That was a nice treat. We will be back.
Take care and God bless you both.

What a lovely place. Everything was very nice. You’ve taken the time to make this a truly neat visit. Our children enjoyed netting the fish and playing in the water. Saw lots of birds, spiders, fish, deer. I even got up extra early just to enjoy the peaceful setting.
Enjoyed the surrounding area, Wakulla Springs (saw a manatee), the lighthouse, the town of St. Marks.
Thanks again. We will recommend this place, and we will be back. Our son says this is our new Florida home.

Thank you so much for this amazing experience. This was the best anniversary we have ever had. We saw all sorts of wildlife and relaxed more than we’ve been able to in a long time. We really look forward to coming back. We can’t thank you enough for everything.
Jessica & Terry
Thanks for letting us stay here for our 25th anniversary. The house is just the right size for us, and the surroundings are fabulous. We love this area. We even caught and ate scallops. We saw an abundance of wildlife.
Sincerely,

- "This was a perfect place to stay. Deer in the yard, fish in the river. Pictures look great but when you get there you find it much better than you imagined! Very clean and had everything we needed. Floyd and Caroline are wonderful people and very accommodating. You will really miss a great experience if you don't stay here! " - "Bringing our oldest son to FSU for his freshman year, we decided to make a family vaca out of it. So glad we stayed here! Floyd and Carolyn are wonderful, gracious hosts, and the cabin is amazing! Unbelievably peaceful and relaxing. We saw deer from the deck, manatees and other water life from the dock, and hummingbirds from the porch. Ahhh, the porch-our favorite place! Board games at the large picnic table, relaxing, laughing, reminiscing and just enjoying family time in the overstuffed chairs and porch swing- in our "normal" lives, it's hard to get everyone together for more than a couple of minutes. Even tried our hand at fishing from the dock w/ the poles on the porch-quite hilarious-had to buy dinner-but it was fun. The cabin had everything needed for a family of four, beds are very comfortable, good water pressure (that's a biggie w/ me), and you can actually get COLD water from the tap-unheard of in Sarasota in August. We will definitely be back! Thank you Floyd and Carolyn, for a wonderful send-off for Zachary, and a wonderful family vacation!"

Close to everything, a million miles away.......Tallahassee is waiting for you at this fabulous, all new, custom cabin.
Down the two-track driveway, past the view of the nearest neighbors, our New Luxury Cabin awaits. Rest easy on the porch, with its view of the two-acre lake or cross the adjacent foot bridge to the island. Fish for bass and bream, stroll the walking path, paddle around and enjoy the wildlife, or just relax far from the madding crowd.
This slice of paradise sits on 12 acres; our home is across the lake, out of sight and out of mind.
Rigorous attention to the cabin's finish details have been made including tobacco-stained vaulted wood lined ceilings, whitewashed wood lined walls, custom cabinetry with hand-crafted butcher-block tops. Large, screened porch overlooks the private lake with small dining table and relaxing Adirondack chairs. Modern gourmet kitchen that has a large peninsula with waterfall countertop, farmhouse sink and breakfast bar. Kitchen is equipped with range/oven with air fryer function, full size refrigerator/freezer with ice maker. Spa like bath has custom tile rainfall shower with body jets and hand sprayer. The cozy bedroom features a 12" US CertiPUR hybrid mattress with air-flow foam layer allowing maximum airflow for unbeatable temperature regulation and spring coil that provides excellent skeletal support and isolates motion transfer, perfect for a good night's sleep. Bedroom has separate remote control heating & cooling system from the living area and features built in wall mounted individually controlled reading lamps. Enjoy the welcoming living room with a comfy memory foam queen sofa bed for extra guests and new large screen Amazon Fire TV with Alexa voice remote. With amenities like fast Wi-Fi, heating, and AC, guests will feel right at home. You're sure to make fantastic memories with a stay at our place.
Canoe, kayaks, fishing equipment and lawn games are available for no additional fee.
Cabin site has a private fire ring, charcoal grill with charcoal & lighter fluid provided and picnic table. Guests are welcome to burn any downed limbs found on site in the fire ring or bring firewood.
Groomed walking path surrounds the lake with an island that's accessed from an arched foot bridge.
Fishing is allowed and no license is required since the lake is privately owned. There are several species of Bass and freshwater sunfish (including Bluegill).
No smoking inside dwellings but smoking is allowed outside.
No unauthorized parties. Please do not invite any guests to the property that are not included in the reservation without advance permission from the owner. No boom boxes or amplification devices allowed.
Our 12-acre site is comprised of 3 homesites. In addition to the main house and cabin we have a 3 bedroom, 2 bath cottage that is also used for short term rental and shares a water well with the cabin and is also available on VRBO. All of the sites are secluded and none of the homesites are visible to each other, or any other home for that matter :)
Twisted Pine borders several thousand acres of undeveloped lands. It's an animal and nature lover's paradise and home to so many of the amazing flora & fauna native to the region. The cabin is nestled in trees such as Magnolia, Cypress, Pine, Oak, Catawba, and Hickory. It's too numerous to name all the wildlife that we've seen but a short list includes armadillo's, opossums, squirrels, raccoons, Cooter and Florida softshell turtles that make the place their permanent home in addition to the abundance of critters we've seen passing through including bobcat, gray fox, black bear, alligators and otters.
Birding at Twisted Pine is INCREDIBLE! Birds attracted to woods, water and meadow can be viewed. A partial list includes owl, hawk, eagle, kite, vulture, egret, anhinga, great blue heron, goose, turkey, wild ducks -including wood ducks, cardinal, bluebird, titmice, jay, chickadee, wren, dove, woodpecker, finch, robin, crow, sparrow, grackle, mockingbird, oriole, painted bunting, hummingbird, towhee....... The Barred Owl calls are unforgettable, and the owls can best be seen at dawn or dusk/early night.
We try to preserve the natural biodiversity of the site overall. We do mow the path around the lake and the meadow a few times a year. We have never stocked the lake, but we have installed aerators to increase oxygen levels and improve the water quality. While we have no structural flood plain issues and we do have a large open meadow between the homesites that slopes down to the lake, please keep in mind we don't have groomed lawns. During times of high precipitation, the lake level can rise, the canal can fill, the access to the bridge may have standing water in front of it and there may be a few areas on the driveway with short-term standing water. The driveway has recently been rebuilt, is in very good condition and has a solid base with no mud so a 2-wheel drive vehicle can easily drive through any short-term standing water on the driveway.
We keep Italian honeybees, domestic ducks and chickens and have various fruit and nut producing trees and shrubs including Meyer lemons, blueberries, mulberries and a very small vineyard as well as vegetable and herb gardens. Our domestic fowl are penned for their safety and located on the other side of the lake.
We enjoy sharing our seasonal bounty and fresh eggs, honey from our bees and homemade snacks featuring homegrown or seasonal ingredients will typically be awaiting your arrival in addition to the staples we keep stocked including premium hot beverages, granola bars, toaster pastries, oatmeal, popcorn etc.
- "This property is stunning. Mrs. Ann was available at all times. It was stocked with all that you need for cooking, grilling, she also had a homemade pecan cranberry cinnamon roll with date that it was made and was delis, along with other snacks. Very clean, actually a brand new cabin. We especially loved the screened in porch. Thank you Mrs. Ann! We will be back." - "We have stayed at Twisted Pine twice now! Mrs.Ann is the perfect host and has thought of every detail to make sure your stay has everything you could need for a home away from home! Beautiful and serene! The cabin is clean and stocked with more than other vrbo,s we have stayed in. I would give 10 stars if i could."

The location is so peaceful and the wraparound deck going around and seeing all the deer in the morning While you sip your coffee. The sound of the trees. If you want to be completely away from everything this is your place. The cabin is all wood. So beautiful and also with smart appliances. There’s so much I can say about this place, but I think you should go there for yourself to see what I’m talking about. I know I will definitely be back."

- "Rustic secluded beautiful property. Just what we needed. Close to Thomasville and Tallahassee." - "We stayed 3 nights for our anniversary and it was wonderful! Gorgeous property and very peaceful. The cabin is historic (read up on it if you don’t know the background) but updated just enough to be very comfortable. TV, internet (weather can affect it a lot) full kitchen, great tub and nice shower. Covered porch was good for relaxing and we had a fire in the fire pit our first night, which was so nice. We have a lot of respect for the late Governor, so seeing his gravesite along the waking trail was meaningful. Lots of privacy but close enough to go to Tallahassee or Thomasville in a fairly short time. Highly recommend this property if you like this environment - it’s worth it!"

Rest easy on the screened porch, with its view of the two-acre lake or cross the adjacent foot bridge to the island. Fish for bass and bream, stroll the walking path, paddle around and enjoy the wildlife, or just relax far from the madding crowd.
This slice of paradise sits on 12 acres; our home is across the lake, out of sight and out of mind.
The space
Construction completed June 2024 by Alabama Custom Cabins in Lynn, AL.
Rigorous attention to the cabin's finish details have been made including tobacco-stained vaulted wood lined ceilings, whitewashed wood lined walls, custom cabinetry with hand-crafted butcher-block tops.

Modern gourmet kitchen features a peninsula with waterfall countertop, farmhouse sink and breakfast bar. Kitchen is equipped with range/oven with air fryer function, full size refrigerator/freezer with ice maker.

Cabin site has a private fire ring, charcoal grill with charcoal & lighter fluid provided and picnic table. Guests are welcome to burn any downed limbs found on site in the fire ring or bring their own firewood.
Groomed walking path surrounds the lake with an island that's accessed from an arched foot bridge.
Fishing is allowed and no license is required since the lake is privately owned. There are several species of Bass and freshwater sunfish (including Bluegill).
Our 12-acre site is comprised of 3 homesites. The Cottage, the Cabin and the main house where Allen & I reside. The cabin & cottage are both available as short term rentals and each have private septic and share a water well. All of the sites are secluded and none of the homesites are visible to each other, or any other home for that matter :)
Guest access
Entire house, private lake, island and 10 acres of the site.
Other things to note
Large fire pit with rustic bench seating may be used for special events upon request.
Twisted Pine borders several thousand acres of undeveloped lands. It's an animal and nature lover's paradise and home to so many of the amazing flora & fauna native to the region. The cottage is nestled in trees such as Magnolia, Cypress, Pine, Oak, Catawba, and Hickory.
We try to preserve the natural biodiversity of the site overall and we’ve never stocked the lake. We do mow the path around the lake and the meadow a few times a year and we have aerators in the lake to increase oxygen levels and improve the water quality.
We enjoy sharing our seasonal bounty and fresh eggs, homemade snacks featuring homegrown or seasonal ingredients will frequently be awaiting your arrival in addition to the staples we keep stocked including premium hot beverages, granola bars, toaster pastries, oatmeal, popcorn etc.
No unauthorized parties. Please do not invite any guests to the property that are not included in the reservation without advance permission from the owner. No boom boxes or amplification devices allowed.
