Cottage
Turville, England, United Kingdom

OLD ROSE COTTAGE is a 4-star rated grade II listed brick & flint holiday cottage located in the picturesque village of Turville (home to the TV serie The Vicar of Dibley) in the in the Hambleden Valley, in the heart of Chiltern Hills. Designated as an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" the Hambleden Valley has some of the most spectacular and characteristic Chiltern scenery: high ridges, beech woods, sweeping dry chalk valleys yet it is only 20 miles from Oxford and 25 miles from Heathrow.
This unspoilt, beautiful location offers a wide range of attractions to suit the whole family: from the finest walking and cycling paths in the Chilterns to boat trips and picnics along the nearby river Thames, visits to grand stately homes and shopping in the pretty riverside market towns of Marlow and Henley.
Old Rose Cottage dates back to the 16th century and it has been sympathetically renovated to provide all comforts while preserving its character. It's open all year and provides self-catering accommodation for up to 4 people in two bedrooms. We've been holding a 4-star rating with the AA since 2014 and we are independently assessed every year.
The cottage offers two bedrooms, one bathroom, a living room and a kitche, plus a private garden.
It is arranged over two floors: upstairs you will find two double bedrooms (a double and a twin) and on ground floor there are a lovely sitting room, a spacious kitchen/diner and the bathroom.
The two double bedrooms and stairway have original oak beams, the oak cottage style kitchen/dining room is spacious and fully equipped and the sitting room has a magnificent inglenook fireplace with log burner for cosy winter evenings in.
Facilities:
- TV with freeview
- Wi-fi
- dishwasher
- washing machine
- full size hob, oven, microwave, fridge freezer and abundance of crockery and pans
- nearby private garden - detached from the property, just a few meters away
- on-street parking for one car.

LOCATION
The tiny remote village of Turville is actually one of the most popular film and TV location of the country: beautiful St Mary is the church featured in The Vicar of Dibley, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was based at the Cobstone Windmill, which overlooks the village, and Midsomer Murders is a regular visitor here at the village, to name just a few. And it is easy to see why. Nestled in the Chiltern Hills, the postcard perfect village will give you the impression of stepping back in time with its tranquility and its delightful cottages, most of which date back to the 16th century. The breathtaking countryside of the Chilterns is without a doubt the best attraction of the area, and it is itself well worth a stay.
The best ways to explore the surroundings is walking or cycling, and the Ridgeway, The Thames Path and the Chiltern Way are here for you to do just that. Hamlets and country villages are scattered around waiting to be discovered (Swycombe, Ewelme, Fingest and Hambleden are just a few examples), with antique churches and traditional pubs. Or you can relax in front of the log burner and soak up the peaceful atmosphere of Turville.
Our beloved local pub - The Bull & Butcher - is a short stroll from the cottage, and they serve lovely food.

But there is more to keep you and your family entertained, like canoeing and cruising along the River Thames, golfing at one of the many golf courses nearby or shopping and eating out. Bicester Outlet Village is only a 20 min drive away from Turville and nearby Henley, Marlow, Wallingford, Thame and Goring offer plenty of shops and boutiques, and a superb choice of relaxing cafes, characterful pubs and restaurants catering for every taste and budget.
And if it is culture you crave, Oxford is about 20 miles away, and in Henley, Marlow, Thame and Wallingford you will find theaters, art galleries, museums and so many festivals and events you will be spoilt for choice!
Two of our favourite destinations are The River and Rowing Museum in Henley and The Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden; a must for families and children.

Or you can go explore National Trust properties nearby: Hughenden Manor, home to Queen Victoria prime minister Benjamin Disraeli; Cliveden estate overlooking the Thames; Greys Court, a Tudor house with an interesting history; West Wycombe village, a Chilterns village with cottages and inns dating from the 16th to 18th centuries to name a few.

TRANSPORT
Turville is in rural location and there's no public transport: own car is advised. There is allocated on-street parking for one car next to the cottage.
Nearest train stations are in Henley-on-Thames, High Wycombe (both are approximately 8 miles away) and Reading (15 miles away).
All above train stations are served by a taxi rank and/or a cab office, and many local driver/taxi services serve the area.

Guest Reviews:

- "Wonderful, simply wonderful. Quintessentially English village located in beatiful rural area, yet close enough to everything. Kate (the owner) was so welcoming and the cottage has everything you could wish for. We visited Oxford, London, Henley on Thames, Reading and Basingstoke and still had time to enjoy the cottage and its surroundings. Would love to come again to visit. And would definitely recommend." - "Beautiful village - lots of good walks and located to be handy for Henley, Marlow, Wycombe, Wallingford, etc.. The little lane past the front of the cottage can be busy with walkers, cyclists, horse riders and at school times, but otherwise a lovely, peaceful little bolt hole. We would definitely return."

Bix Cottage - Luxury Cottages
Cottage
Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

At a glance
Sympathetically renovated modern converted Byre Stunning countryside location Outdoor swimming pool (heated from May bank holiday to end of September only)
About the property
As part of an 18th century cluster farmyard surrounded by rolling fields, Bix Cottage promises a tranquil retreat in the heart of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Formerly a byre, the cottage has been converted and renovated to a high-end finish and is a superb choice for a family or a small group of good friends to relax and enjoy country walks and pub lunches, yet is conveniently located just a few miles away from the pretty town of Henley-on-Thames.
The space
Bix Cottage is a former byre that has been sympathetically and exquisitely converted into a light and bright luxury holiday let. The interiors highlight English country style with a modern twist from features including decorative Pooky light fittings, a high-spec kitchen and oak-beamed ceilings.

All the accommodation is set out over one, ground-floor level to offer easy living and is ideal for anyone who might be less mobile. The layout is open-plan and features a stunning kitchen that's kitted out to a top-end spec, with features such as a boiling water tap, and is sure to tempt you to stay home, cook up delicious dinners and sip drinks together into the small hours.

Special mention must be made here about the Bix cheese that will be waiting for you on arrival. It's produced at the local, award-winning Nettlebed Creamery and we can highly recommend it ourselves.

The kitchen leads into the dining area which has plenty of space for you to spread out and get comfy, whilst the sitting room area is a comfortable place to retire to in the evening and chat about the next day's plans, or watch a film. There is a Smart TV with access to a Plex movie library, as well as access to Netflix and Amazon Prime (but guests need to log in to their own accounts). If you're looking for a digital detox, there are retro board games and playing cards to keep you entertained instead.

There are two bedrooms, both with king-size Hypnos beds, one of which is a zip-link to offer the option for two single beds – perfect if you're staying with children. Meanwhile, there's a family bathroom that serves both bedrooms and features quality Burlington fittings.

Outside there is a small courtyard area from where you can access the swimming pool which is a wonderful place to cool off on hot, summer days, and a pool towel is provided for each guest. Please note, the building shown adjacent to the pool is not part of the accommodation. The pool will be heated from the first bank holiday weekend of May until the last weekend of September. The pool lies at the heart of the farm and access is shared with the family.
Guest access
Parking is available just outside the property and a self-check-in is available. The cottage is part of a cluster farmyard with other buildings on it, however it is private and the swimming pool will be shared use with the owners family during your stay. The owners of the property live nearby and are available if you have any queries or need any recommendations for good walks or restaurants during your stay.
Sustainability
The property owners have renovated the byre sympathetically and incorporated a number of features to make it as ‘green' as possible. For example, there are low-energy LED light bulbs and an air source heat pump that provides underfloor heating and hot water. There's also a heat recovery system that ensures maximum heat retention and has the benefit of providing ambient fresh air without the need for opening the windows. The cottage also has its own well which supplies all the water, including un-softened drinking water to the kitchen and garden tap.

We plant a tree for every booking we make to help offset some of the carbon emissions generated by our stays.
Keep in mind

Check-out: 10:00

The owners have two small dogs, so if you are nervous around dogs, do let us know so that we can advise the owners not to bring them along if they need to visit you.

Pheasants Hill Old Byre was once one of the cow barns of Pheasants Hill Farm, and is nestled adjacent to the owners’ home. The farm buildings date from the mid-18th century and comprise a traditional brick-and-flint farmhouse, an impressive range of outbuildings - barns, granary and cart shed. Originally belonging to the Hambleden Estate, it ceased being a working farm in 1962 and was purchased by the present owner’s father in 1968. The farm is situated in the renowned Hambleden Valley and lies within the Pheasants Hill Conservation Area, as well as the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is under the protection of a National Trust covenant.

You will find mementoes of previous generations throughout the property. The owner’s grandfather was a master carver and you will be sleeping in a wonderful carved oak bed that he made for his own wedding in 1902 (but made super-comfortable with a brand new sprung base and orthopaedic mattress). The owner’s father was an artist and nearly all of the paintings and drawings in the property are his work.

The one-acre garden, shared with the owners, is fully enclosed (to keep the deer out). Guests can enjoy their own sitting area, with table and chairs provided. The garden is looked after without the use of pesticides or herbicides and is, in consequence, a haven for wildlife. The wildflower meadow is covered in cowslips in the spring and more than 100 Pyramid Orchids appear in the summer.

The owners are passionate about wildlife and the environment, and will be donating 15% of earnings on the property to local wildlife and conservation charities. Hot water and heating in the property uses electricity solely from renewable resources. Rainwater for the garden is collected in a large underground cistern. Shop/tea room and pub/restaurant ½ mile.

2 br charming cottage in idyllic Chilterns village
Cottage
Buckinghamshire

Old Rose Cottage is a grade II listed 4 star AA rated brick-and-flint cottage located in the heart of Turville, in a little row of terraced cottages near beautiful St Mary, the church featured in The Vicar of Dibley.
The cottage dates back to the 16th century and it has been expertly renovated to provide all comforts whilst preserving its character; a unique self-catering retreat for up to 4 guests with two bedrooms, a fireplace / log burner, garden, wi-fi and breathtaking countryside location

The space
Old Rose Cottage is arranged over two levels.

Upstairs there are two spacious double bedrooms, one has a king size bed and the other has twin beds.
The bedrooms and stairway have beautiful original oak beams.
Downstairs you will find the kitchen/dining room, a comfy sitting room and the bathroom with bath/shower over.
There is a magnificent inglenook fireplace in the sitting room with a log burning stove for cosy evenings in, and a television with freeview.

The oak cottage style kitchen has a dining area and is well equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, full size electric hob and oven, microwave, kettle, toaster, full size fridge/freezer and everything needed for an enjoyable holiday, including an abundance of pots, pans, cutlery and crockery.

Old Rose Cottage also benefits from a nearby private garden with BBQ, table and chairs - great for relaxing, al fresco eating and children playing.
Please note, the garden is detatched, just a few yards away from the cottage and it is totally private and secluded.

Other facilities include: central heating throughout (there's a radiator in every room), allocated on-street parking for one car and free wi-fi for our guests.

Towels and bedding are provided at no extra charge, beds will be made for you prior to your arrival, and all linen is changed weekly for bookings spanning over two weeks or longer. Extra services and/or linen changes can be arranged (at extra cost).
A high chair is available - free of charge - on request; please let us know if you would like us to leave one in the cottage for you.

Guest access
Guests have exclusive access to the entire property and garden. The garden is detatched from the property (a few meters away) and very private and secluded.

Turville is a quiet peaceful village and we like it this way. We welcome families and friends wishing to relax and enjoy the beautiful countryside, however if you are planning parties or late night events, then Old Rose Cottage is not the place for you.
We ask you to show due consideration to our neighbors and ensure any noise is kept to a minimum between the hours of 10 pm and 10 am.

The majority of our guests are families and we welcome children of all ages, however due to the presence of possible hazards, like stairs and the woodburner, adult supervision is required and kids under 16 should not be left alone in the cottage.
If you need a high chair just let us know and we'll make sure one is left for you in the cottage to use (no charge), however we are unable to provide a cot. You are welcome to bring your own cot if you wish - both bedrooms are spacious enough to accommodate one.

Other things to note
The tiny, peaceful village of Turville is actually one of the most popular film and TV location of the country: beautiful St Mary Church starred in The Vicar of Dibley, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was based at the Cobstone Windmill, which overlooks the village, and the serie Midsomer Murders is a regular visitor here at the village, to name just a few!
On a more practical note,
Turville is not a very technology-friendly place: mobile and TV reception are quite poor in the village.
There is wi-fi in the cottage which usually works well, but speed may be not what you are used to.
All utilities are included in rental fee: we pride ourselves for offering a fair all-inclusive rate, and hot water, heating as well as electricity and wi-fi are unmetered. Linen and towels are also included. However, we are unable to provide an unlimited supply of logs for the woodburner: you'll find a few logs left for you in the cottage free of charge, so that you can enjoy the woodburner straight away, and if you need more, logs are readily available in the area in most supermarkets and service stations.

Stunning countryside location
Outdoor swimming pool (Open from May bank holiday to end of September only)

About the property

As part of an 18th century cluster farmyard surrounded by rolling fields, Bix Cottage promises a tranquil retreat in the heart of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Formerly a byre, the cottage has been converted and renovated to a high-end finish and is a superb choice for a family or a small group of good friends to relax and enjoy country walks and pub lunches, yet is conveniently located just a few miles away from the pretty town of Henley-on-Thames.

Other things to note
Check-in: After 16:00
Check-out: 10:00

Deposit: Bookings are subject to a non-refundable deposit of 30% of the booking value plus applicable booking fees with the balance payable 60 days before the date of travel.

Pool: The building shown adjacent to the pool is not part of the accommodation. The pool will be open from the first bank holiday weekend of May until the last weekend of September. The pool lies at the heart of the farm and access is shared with the family

Accidental Damage Deposit: To maintain the highest standards in our properties, guests will need to pay a refundable Accidental Damage Deposit of £200 prior to their stay. An advance payment as detailed in the booking summary can be made to waive this requirement.

Book with confidence: If your booking is affected by new Government travel restrictions which were not known at the time of booking, and you're legally unable to travel, we will arrange with the property owner to refund 100% of your holiday cost.

The owners have two small dogs, so if you are nervous around dogs, do let us know so that we can advise the owners not to bring them along if they need to visit you.

Due to the location and the heavy insulation of the cottage, WiFi calling is sometimes the best way to make a call.

Children must be supervised around the swimming pool area and guests should take extra care as there is a drop of several inches to a non grass area near to the pool.

We plant a tree for every booking we make to help offset some of the carbon emissions generated by our stays
