- "The good thing is that it's a lovely house with a nice interior, and it's close to Burford High Street, so we could enjoy a stay that is unique to the Cotswolds. The negative thing is that the hot water stopped working halfway through, so the whole family couldn't take a hot shower, and when I inquired about it to the property, there was no reply. (I contacted them on the first day of my three-night stay, but there was no reply.) Also, the best before date of the instant coffee provided had passed four years! It's way too long to be out of date."

Guest Reviews:

- "Greta location and lovely property for a long weekend" - "The cottage was perfect for our needs and in a fantastic location, just a stones throw from the high street but set back so very quiet. The extra touches were lovely and well thought out (including an extra hand towel in the bathroom), the welcome pack was exactly what you would need and also included gorgeous homemade items. We would definitely stay again." - "This is a perfect place to see the Cotswolds from. It is located in town but it isn’t loud. Some Cotswold stays are isolated. This isn’t. The place is small but well equipped for two couples or a family of 4. Everything we needed was there!"

Guest Reviews:

- "Very warm and cosy stay in the Reading Room for a week. We were working so stayed most of the time in the cottage and it was perfect for the two of us. The main bedroom is really spacious, and the king bed appreciated! Plus lovely fresh linen. Comfy lounge room and easy to use little fire. Lovely sunlight coming into the cottage. Easy to use kitchen and washing machine, and directions to the cottage etc was very straightforward. Cute, friendly pub just 50 m down the road, and Burford shops an easy few minutes' walk. The cottage backs onto a road which is a little busy at times, but even we, who are both very, very noise-averse, found it didn't impact on our stay at all. I had treatments and my nails down at The Beauty Studio which was fab. All in all a very pleasant stay and would consider staying again next time we need a base in UK."

Farthingdales - sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms
Cottage
Burford, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

Farthingdales sits on Lawrence Lane, a no-through road with just four cottages and part of Burford Boarding School, which ends at St John the Baptist Church with its impressive church spire - forever captured by L S Lowry in his Burford Church painting. At the end of the lane is a footpath that passes the church and churchyard, exiting on Church Lane which leads to the River Windrush and a riverside walk. Farthingdales is built from the region's distinctive, honey-coloured Cotswold stone, with an Art Deco panel in the front door – a nod to the town's link to the Art & Crafts Movement.

The owner has refurbished and decorated Farthingdales with great style and flair to create a stunning home. On the ground floor is a stylish open-plan kitchen-dining-living area, with a superb inglenook fireplace and wood burning stove, a family bathroom and a boot room. Upstairs, there is a family shower room and two bedrooms, one a spacious master bedroom with a super-king-size bed and a unique bed head made with William Morris design fabrics and the other a delightful twin room with two single beds.

Farthingdales is right in the heart of the oldest part of Burford, tucked away from the visiting crowds. To the rear of the cottage is a very pretty, Cotswold cottage garden with a patio, small lawn with a garden bench, planted borders and a delightful summer house. Guests are provided with a dining table and chairs and a pair of lounging chairs. The east-west orientation of the garden means it has sunshine on it – weather permitting – throughout the day and on into the evening, making it the perfect spot for a morning coffee through to evening drinks.

Ground Floor

Entrance Hall:
Step in from Lawrence Lane through the front door, with its bright and colourful Art Deco glass panel, into the stunning open-plan kitchen-living-dining space, featuring the original flagstone floor, exposed beams, inglenook fireplaces with harmonising clay-coloured walls entwined with modern luxury.

Kitchen/Dining Area:
Immediately in front of you is the kitchen's white, quartz-topped breakfast bar with two stylish bar stools and a unique and quirky squirrel climbing down the light flex! To the right side of the breakfast bar, in front of an original stone inglenook, is a beautiful, solid oak dining table with comfy seating for all. Alongside the table there's a drinks station with a Nespresso machine, and a microwave above kitchen cabinets housing a fridge, freezer and washing machine.

The kitchen's breakfast bar leads around to a fully equipped cooking and preparation area, with an oven and hob, dishwasher, wine fridge and Thomas Denby stone sink. A back door, with another colourful Art Deco glass panel, opens to the patio and garden.

Living Area:
This beautiful living area is at once stylish and cosy. It features a wood burning stove within an original inglenook fireplace, with a custom-built brass and leather fender – the perfect spot to sit and warm up on a cold winter's night. To one side of the fireplace is a wing-back armchair and to the other a Smart TV, while a reproduction chest acts as a coffee table and store for board games. In the far corner there's a charming, cushioned window seat – once the doorway of one of the original cottages - with books and a reading lamp. Two comfy sofas, on a woven jute rug, provide plenty of space for relaxing in front of the fire while watching the TV or reading. At the foot of the stairs is a custom-built oak hall bureau with a lamp, mirror and pretty leaf dish – the ideal place to keep keys and phones.

Bathroom:
Double, paned doors open from the dining area end of the cottage into a light and bright family bathroom, which features a full-size bath with central taps and a shower above with a rain effect shower head and hand-held shower. In addition, there is a vanity unit with a large wash basin with a touch light mirror and a shaver point to one side, a toilet, and a heated towel rail. A three-pane window (with a blind) overlooks the side courtyard. (The bathrooms doors are lockable and have tapestry curtains. These can be hung on the dining area wall to allow light through when the doors are closed, and the bathroom is not in use, or can be hooked onto the doors for privacy when using the bathroom.)

Boot Room:
Continuing through the bathroom, guests will find a handy boot room with hooks to hang coats, plenty of space to keep boots and shoes, and a butler's sink. A delightful window seat with beautiful cushions and curtains provides the perfect spot to get ready for the outdoors or simply sit and contemplate the day ahead or the day just enjoyed. A tall cupboard houses the iron, ironing board while the vacuum is under the lift-up seat. A door leads out to garden.

First Floor

A carpeted staircase with a handrail leads up to the landing where there is a beautiful light hanging over the stairs and the famous L.S. Lowry print of Lawrence Lane on the wall.

Bedroom One:
This gorgeous bedroom has a strikingly tall ceiling and features a super king-size bed, with bedside tables and reading lamps, set against a custom-built, extra tall bedhead with William Morris fabric panels; so synonymous of the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1800s that was so strong in this area. The bedroom is also furnished with a wardrobe, chest of drawers-cum-dressing table with a large mirror above and a reclining armchair and has bedside sockets with USB points. It has a low, triple-pane window framed by sumptuous, lined curtains and a window seat where you can sit and watch the quiet life of Lawrence Lane going by below.

Bedroom Two:
The pale-mint walls, burnt orange velvet bedheads and antique, mahogany furniture give Farthingdales' twin bedroom a richly Victorian feel. The bedroom is furnished with two single beds (2'6”), with a bedside table and two lamps (and bedside sockets with USB points), an antique dressing table with drawers and an antique wardrobe with plenty of hanging space. This bedroom also has a low, triple pane window with a window seat and beautiful, lined curtains framing this retreat within a retreat.

Family Shower Room:
The compact but fully fitted shower room features a walk-in shower with a detachable shower head and three safety handles, a washbasin with a large mirror with a touch light and LED/Bluetooth speaker, a toilet, a vanity unit with two shaver points and a heated towel rail. Look out for the gorgeous, hare robe hooks on the back of the door.

Outside

The cottage has a charming, east-west orientated garden, making it a fabulous suntrap on sunny days, which is accessed through the rear door off the kitchen or through the boot room. Cross the little gravel path and head through the gate marked with a number ‘3' and into the patio area (where you'll also see the outside of what was once an ancient saddlery), and then to a lawn surrounded by mature borders with a summer room at the far end. Take a seat on the garden bench and enjoy the sound of the famous church bells, eat al fresco on the patio or enjoy the outdoors, protected from the elements, wrapped up in one of the garden blankets or inside the garden room.

Guest Reviews:

- "My cousin and I had a lovely stay in Farthingdales! There was a problem with the fridge when we arrived which got sorted in a timely manner on New Years Eve. Thanks to all who made that happen!" - "We have stayed at Farthingdales Cottage the second time this summer and we loved it even more this time. The Cottage is beautifully decorated, has a very cosy yet stylish (but not overstyled) look and feel and is the perfect home away from home. This time, the weather was not as warm/sunny as during our stay in 2022, so we made good use of the wood burner in the living room and had cosy nights in in front of the fire with a glass of wine. The cottage is spotlessly clean and has everything (and more) you need to make yourself feel at home. We especially love the open space living/dining room, the master bedroom upstairs and also the nice cottage garden, which is a sun trap during the whole day (if the sun is shining). Parking is on street and not an issue at all - we found our space, even on the busier weekends. Burford is such a lovely village with lots of nice shops, a cheese monger and great pubs. Also, within a short driving you will find Daylesford Farm or the Wild Rabbit Pub in Kingham. Cheltenham with its lively highstreet and great restaurants is a short 30 minutes drive away, as is Oxford. So all in all, Burford sits ideally to benefit from everything the Cotswolds has to offer. We are looking forward to staying again at Farthingdales and will highly recommend this property to our friends and families."

- "Thank you souch for making our Christmas in the Cotswold a dream come true... The cottage was everything we needed it to be and there was nothing we missed on our stay. Thank you for the beautiful Christmas tree too... the extra touches made it extra special." - "Lovely cottage - very well equipped and nicely located for exploring. We loved the walks from the doorstep. It was a little dark inside due to the small windows. Had everything that we needed but the microwave was in a small cupboard high up. This is seriously unsafe and only our six foot son could safely use and reach it. We highly recommend that this is removed from the cupboard asap and place on a surface."

Guest Reviews:

- "This cottage was perfect for our family of 5 (3 teenagers) in the Cotswolds! The location in Burford is perfect for accessing villages and the main roads but the village itself is small and simple. Lots of choices for dining, coffee and adorable shops up and down the main street. This cottage was great for our family as it had 2 full baths and 3 bedrooms. The lounge off the kitchen was cozy and perfect for hanging out. The kitchen table is large and worked great for us and the kitchen is well stocked. There is parking behind the cottage and a small private garden. The literal only downside would be no dryer and the weather was wet so we struggled to get our laundry dry during our 3 night stay. Otherwise the accommodations were fabulous. Steve couldn’t have been nicer - the perfect host. So responsive and went above and behind to give us recommendations and even ordered a walking trail book I was having trouble finding in the states so that it was waiting for us when we arrived at the cottage! Go eat at the Angel! This is a great location and we would certainly stay here again!"

- "This was our first time to Burford and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The cottage had everything we needed and was so cozy. We will definitely be back!!" - "We had a lovely stay at this cottage. It is old and full of character yet fully equipped for a modern holiday. The location in the High Street was ideal. Parking was easy. My only gripe was the 6pm check-in time." - "We loved this snug and unique cottage. It was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals. I only wish the weather had been warm enough that we could have had some meals in the sweet courtyard. The owners have considered every detail and there were thoughtful touches throughout. Including wood in the stove ready to be lit for a cozy fire when we arrived. We had a problem with the heat, and someone was there to fix it within 30 minutes of our phoning to report it. Thank you! Burford is all that we were hoping for. Just the right size to walk and explore, with cute shops of all sorts and some nice restaurants. It was a lovely and memorable stay."

- "Beautiful home fantastic location" - "A good base for exploring the Cotswolds" - "Loved Ellen cottage. It’s situated within walking distance of Burford which for those new to the cotswolds is a traditional popular tourist small market town, which we loved. The house itself is a traditional cottage over several quirky levels finished to a high standard. The cottage had everything that you could need. The main bedroom is beautiful the photo’s do not do it justice. We had an issue with the twin room during our stay which was sorted by the maintenance company whilst we were out, very quick and on a Saturday!. Just to be aware there is only parking for one car. The cottage is for 6 people so it would be good to get instructions on where to leave additional cars before arrival, only a little niggle, but overall great location and great cottage! Many thanks"

Perfect location with Burford 3.5 miles, Bourton on the Water 7.7 miles, Cirencester 15 miles, Oxford 22 miles, Daylesford Farmhouse 12 miles, Charlbury Station 11.3 miles.

Little Barrington is listed in the Domesday Book - the Great Survey completed in 1086 at the behest of William the Conqueror. It is recorded as one household with one slave. It had ploughland of '1 lord's plough team' - the amount of land that 8 oxen could plough in a year, or roughly 120 acres. Other resources included a 6 acre meadow and 1 mill valued at 3 shillings and 1 pence. The annual value to Lord Alwin (the sheriff of Gloucestershire) on the Norman Conquest in 1066 was 2 pounds. It remained 2 pounds to Lord Ralph at the time of the survey in 1086.

The Pevsner Architectural Guides (the definitive guides to Great Britain architecture) states that Little Barrington "is one of the most appealing village scenes in the Cotswolds". The Smithy (our residence next door) is called out for its 'reset' 16c features including an upper window and its entrance archway.

There is a private en suite shower room, with White Company towels and Neal's Yard Remedies toiletries. My room is great for couples, solo adventurers, and business travellers and is available for 2+ nights.

The space
The room can be arranged as a twin or double (Zip and link beds) and is on the top floor of the cottage. The room is bright and characterful, with the original wooden beams in the eaves and has a window to the front, looking out towards the countryside and a velux window at the rear, overlooking rooftops. There is a private en suite shower room adjoining the bedroom. I can provide some hanging space and a hairdryer, if needed. Please note that there are some personal items in the room e.g.. on a covered hanging rail and in drawers.

There is a tray with small kettle and crockery, so you can make your own hot drinks and a selection of teas and instant coffee. There is a small fridge with milk if requested.

If the weather is good, you are welcome to eat out in the communal garden where I have a garden table and chairs. There are rarely other people from neighbouring cottages in the garden though I can't guarantee that you will have sole use of the garden. Also it is next to a public path (in front of the cottages, so people will likely be walking past occasionally)

Please do ask if you have any questions!

Guest access
Please note that the living room and kitchen are not available to guests.
Guests have access to their own room and shower room.

During your stay
I can sometimes offer a Cotswolds tour option, depending on my availability. This is flexible, but an example would be leaving Burford at around 10.30am , then visiting 2-3 places, such as Bourton on the Water, Bibury, Stow on the Wold, Broadway etc; you have around 45mins - one hour for lunch at a place of your choice (I can help with ideas) and we leave around 4.15pm to return to Burford for around 5pm. If you have any particular interest, such as afternoon tea, pottery, castles, flowers etc I can advise you where is best to visit :) Another option is I can drive you to one place of your choice and come back to pick you up 2-3 hours later. If you have any particular day tour request, just let me know and hopefully we can work something out. I can let you know the cost once we have finalised your itinerary. If you have a car, I can point you in the right direction too!

Other things to note
The space is self contained. If you prefer, you can access the key from the key safe and make your way to the room on the top (2nd) floor of the cottage. The hallway will sometimes be used by me to get to the first floor.
The room is not available to solo male guests; sorry!
There is no parking space available outside, so you will need to find a space on Sheep Street. I can give you more detailed arrival instructions once the booking is completed.
The room is not suitable for people with mobility issues as it is on the second floor.

Cotswold Country Cottage Escape in Swinbrook
Cottage
Oxfordshire

Relax in this homely country space when exploring the Cotswolds

The space
We’re in peaceful Swinbrook, at the heart of the Cotswolds’ beautiful Windrush Valley and surrounded by lovely countryside walks. Our old well loved and lived in vintage Cotswold home was formerly two country estate cottages, now joined together. So you can access and enjoy one end of the house in complete privacy, with your own front door.

It comprises a large comfortable double height sitting room, gallery, small boot room and utility, cosy double bedroom and en suite bathroom. High speed broadband is available throughout.

There is no kitchen. But the gallery houses a breakfast area, with small dining table and chairs, a mini fridge, microwave oven, Lavazza coffee machine, kettle, crockery, cutlery, and glassware. Simple breakfast provisions include teas, coffees, water, cereals and fresh milk.

The sitting room is a relaxed space, with two sofas, log burner and smart TV.

A basket of logs is £10, payable on site.

Outside has a private split level timber deck and stone terrace, with open country views. In warmer weather there's a table and chairs to eat out and a tiny comfy summer house... a tranquil spot to retreat to, read and enjoy a quiet drink.

Two excellent village pubs of real character are nearby. Closest and a firm old favourite of ours is the lovely Swan Inn, 0.8 miles, which we walk to ourselves.

And a little further The Three Horseshoes, 1.5 miles, an inn dating from 1726 and the newest transformation of the Daylesford group.

All the famous Cotswold historic towns and attractions are within easy reach, starting with handsome Burford, just three miles away. We can recommend lovely walks, and a variety of special places to visit.

A no fuss lovely spot to explore the Cotswolds, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We look forward to making you very welcome.

Please read the 'Other details to note" below.

Guest access
You can exclusively access and use all the space described.

Other things to note
The bathroom has a bath with a hand shower attachment. No separate shower.
The double bed is a French size... not a King Size.
The number of steps and stairs inside and out renders wheelchair access impossible, sadly.
It’s a rustic old family home, so there are a few shabby bits, not going to lie!

Occasionally we rent the whole house, with kitchen, another double bedroom, study, shower and bathroom for weekly lets. Please enquire.

Exquisite Farthingdales Cottage
Cottage
Oxfordshire

This enchanting holiday home sits at the heart of Burford’s original Anglo-Saxon development, tucked away down a residential lane, just a minute’s walk from the medieval bridge crossing the River Windrush and all the town’s shops, pubs and restaurants. An exquisitely furnished and decorated retreat with an elegant and welcoming open-plan living space, a wood burning stove, two gorgeous bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a hidden garden. Perfect for exploring the Cotswolds, Blenheim and Oxford.

The space
Farthingdales sits on Lawrence Lane, a no-through road with just four cottages and part of Burford Boarding School, which ends at St John the Baptist Church with its impressive church spire - forever captured by L S Lowry in his Burford Church painting. At the end of the lane is a footpath that passes the church and churchyard, exiting on Church Lane which leads to the River Windrush and a riverside walk. Farthingdales is built from the region’s distinctive, honey-coloured Cotswold stone, with an Art Deco panel in the front door – a nod to the town’s link to the Art & Crafts Movement.

Full Property Description
Ground Floor

Entrance Hall:
Step in from Lawrence Lane through the front door, with its bright and colourful Art Deco glass panel, into the stunning open-plan kitchen-living-dining space, featuring the original flagstone floor, exposed beams, inglenook fireplaces with harmonising clay-coloured walls entwined with modern luxury.

Kitchen-Dining Area:
Immediately in front of you is the kitchen’s white, quartz-topped breakfast bar with two stylish bar stools and a unique and quirky squirrel climbing down the light flex! To the right side of the breakfast bar, in front of an original stone inglenook, is a beautiful, solid oak dining table with comfy seating for all. Alongside the table there’s a drinks station with a Nespresso machine, and a microwave above kitchen cabinets housing a fridge, freezer and washing machine.

The kitchen’s breakfast bar leads around to a fully equipped cooking and preparation area, with an oven and hob, dishwasher, wine fridge and Thomas Denby stone sink. A back door, with another colourful Art Deco glass panel, opens to the patio and garden.

Living Area:
This beautiful living area is at once stylish and cosy. It features a wood burning stove within an original inglenook fireplace, with a custom-built brass and leather fender – the perfect spot to sit and warm up on a cold winter’s night. To one side of the fireplace is a wing-back armchair and to the other a Smart TV, while a reproduction chest acts as a coffee table and store for board games. In the far corner there’s a charming, cushioned window seat – once the doorway of one of the original cottages - with books and a reading lamp.

Boot Room:
Continuing through the bathroom, guests will find a handy boot room with hooks to hang coats, plenty of space to keep boots and shoes, and a butler’s sink.

The pale-mint walls, burnt orange velvet bedheads and antique, mahogany furniture give Farthingdales’ twin bedroom a richly Victorian feel. The bedroom is furnished with two single beds (2’6”), with a bedside table and two lamps (and bedside sockets with USB points), an antique dressing table with drawers and an antique wardrobe with plenty of hanging space.

Cross the little gravel path and head through the gate marked with a number ‘3’ and into the patio area (where you’ll also see the outside of what was once an ancient saddlery), and then to a lawn surrounded by mature borders with a summer room at the far end. Take a seat on the garden bench and enjoy the sound of the famous church bells, eat al fresco on the patio or enjoy the outdoors, protected from the elements, wrapped up in one of the garden blankets or inside the garden room.

Guest access
Guests have full access to the house and garden.
Easily accessed from the A40 by car.

By Train:
The nearest train station is Charlbury (8.5 miles), with a frequent service that runs on an hourly basis to Oxford, Reading and London Paddington, and in the other direction to Worcester and Great Malvern. Travel time is about 1hr20 from London and 20mins from Oxford.
