Relax in the charming Steckel carriage house, complete with fresh flower bouquet. It contains a second floor studio apartment with a king ,full, and twin size bed. Settle down with the Victrola record player and a fun selection of vintage records.

There is a small, fully functional Kitchen. The fridge is stocked with water bottles, yogurt and my homemade granola.

There is Smart TV plus an office area with monitors, a printer, 2 office chairs, and Wi-Fi.

There is a children’s play area with books and toys. A pack-n-play crib is available. We also have a large playground close by for our own children that is available for you upon request.

The bathroom and dressing/makeup room is on the first floor.
No PETS.
There is central heating and air.

Linens are washed and dried with All - free and clear laundry soap and dryer sheets to protect those with sensitive skin.

Please be advised that this building is over 100 years old. Light switches are in creative places. :) It is not wheelchair accessible. Please do not book if you have trouble going up steps.

The nature-themed apartment complements the landscaping and numerous songbirds it is surrounded by in the summertime. Outside is an outdoor sitting area, with a locally made bistro table and two chairs.

W.J. and Belle Steckel built the carriage house, in addition to their house, in 1910. It included living quarters for the groundskeeper/chauffeur. The apartment has been kept up-to-date by later owners.

Bloomfield is a unique small town, surrounded by farms. There are old-fashioned stores, a coffee/flower shop, stately Carnegie library, and hiking/fishing/hunting opportunities in the area.

A bit of history: On June 21, 1847, this property was part of a 40 acre spread in Perry Township purchased by John W. Ellis - from the US Government.
Today the Ellis House is a fully furnished, short term rental. Complete with modern kitchen amenities, high speed internet, outdoor grill on back patio, central air and washer & dryer. Streaming TV and Blu-ray player. Two bedrooms (king and twin bed), queen hide a bed, and additional queen air mattress. Rental rates for single nights or stay up to 3-4 months. The space
Our house was completely remodeled in June 2023. Enjoy brand new furniture, appliances, the most comfortable beds, linens and more. The open layout and large windows provide an abundance of natural light making a warm, peaceful and homey feeling. Sliding glass door entrance from the dining room to the spacious backyard, where you may encounter deer walking through the yard enjoying your morning cup of coffee or tea. All new appliances in a fully equipped kitchen. New large refrigerator, dishwasher, gas stove, oven including air fryer. Comfortable bar stools, dining room table with chairs, open kitchen into the living room with Smart TV to enjoy music or shows.

Two of the bedrooms are newly furnished, each including a queen bed, two night stands with reading lamps, 55" TV with Roku and YouTube TV, closet with hangers and suitcase rack.
The third bedroom can accommodate a queen size air mattress if needed and functions as a workout room and workspace with Bluetooth sound system and printer.

Full laundry located downstairs in the basement with brand new washer and dryer located downstairs in the basement.

We are close proximity to some of the best hunting and fishing in the state of Iowa. A great place to relax and unwind after a long day outdoors.

Parking is convenient in the driveway or along the neighborhood streets.
Guest access
Guests will have access to the entire home with the exception to one closet and the garage. There will be a $50 fine for every guest staying overnight that exceeds the house limit of 6; the booking will also be cancelled.

Unplug & recharge at this secluded retreat overlooking a private lake. Nestled among the majestic hickories, our approx. 500 sq ft cozy cabin is perfect for a couple's romantic getaway or a family weekend! In winter, snuggle up in front of the woodstove. In summer, relax on the porch or hammock or relax around the campfire, all with a beautiful view of the 11 acre lake. Also available for your use are 2 kayaks & a canoe.

Spend your time soaking in nature, or fishing on the lake. We have great fishing here! Our cabin is located on a fully operational organic farm, so you may hear cows mooing or occasionally see farm equipment.

Because our cabin is in the woods, and we have invaded the bugs natural habitat; it is very likely that you may see some during your stay! We do spray for bugs quarterly to help keep them out.

We do not recommend swimming in the lake. There are some big snapping turtles in it. SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK.

AS OF AUGUST 12, 2023: WE ARE NO LONGER PET FRIENDLY. We will not be accepting new reservations with pets at Hickory Lake Getaway.

Our cabin is both hunter and family friendly! The cabin is fully furnished and equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay, including a fully equipped kitchen, a cozy living space with one bedroom and two lofts (each with a twin bed). There's also a private patio with a large table and grill. It's perfect for relaxing and enjoying the views.

*If you have multiple groups - we have an additional accommodation available on property in our red barn for an additional charge. This second lodging can sleep up to 10 people and has 4 bedrooms, a full bathroom, living space, & kitchenette. Please send a message for information & additional pricing. In total - 'The Rack' & 'The Roost' can house up to 15 people!

The cabin, patio, and yard surrounding it are for our guests to enjoy. The barn is part of our family business, but if you are interested in checking out the property - please make arrangements with us ahead of time. We have a lovely pond for fishing or watching spectacular sunsets. Lots of wildlife around, so you will likely hear owls, and may see a deer or two!

Other things to note
This location is perfect if you are in the area for an event at Whippoorwill Acres or visiting Truman State or ATSU in Kirksville. If you have a group larger than 5 - please contact us as we have an additional space on property to offer for an additional charge and can work with you so your whole group can be together!

Relax with the whole family after exploring the vast chunks of public land that Southern Iowa is known for. There are many types of outdoor recreational opportunities including Foraging for Morels, Fishing on Lake Rathbun and the many local creeks, to exploring/bird watching on the vast areas on Sedan Bottoms WMA. Looking to check out some areas in Northern Missouri, then Rebels Cove is just a short drive and has plenty of land to roam! Or just relax at camp and take advantage of our WiFi!

The space
Come enjoy our 800’ cabin, situated on a quiet 25 acre lot surrounded by oak ridges and farm fields. It features 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, covered porch and a beautiful open kitchen/dining area. The first bedroom has a set of bunks with an xl full over a queen. The second bedroom has two sets of bunks, each are a twin over a full. A mini split heat pump provides heat and AC to keep you comfortable in any weather. Along with the a good selection of cook wear, there’s a couple of electric frypans, two toasters and an outdoor grill available. Dry your boots after a long day of exploring on one of the multiple sets of dryers set up near the entry door. And for you hunters, there’s an electric hoist on a trolley system to make processing your game a breeze. The building is new, up to code, but still has many beautiful rustic features from a salvaged Vermont barn! Just looking for a quiet place to work remotely, come take advantage of our new WIFI, you won’t be disappointed!
