The house was immaculate and had everything you would need to feel at home. The kitchen was extremely well stocked as were the bathrooms (loved the towels). We were celebrating Christmas and we asked to have a tree set up. When we arrived, holiday music was playing and many beautiful decorations had been set up for our stay. *Winter Rules / Notes:

There is no running water in the tiny house during the winter months. There is a modern bathroom with attached wood-burning sauna at the top of the hill (125ft away). This is where you fill water jugs, provided by us, for use during your stay. There is hot water, a shower, sink, and flushable toilet.

Please use the outdoor sink at the shared bathroom to wash dishes. There is a dish stainer in the tiny house you can use to bring the dishes up and down.

Please do not leave water in the kettle or Chemex when you leave the cabin.

The heater is an electric oil heater. You can turn it on to your desired warmth during your stay, it doesn't take too long to warm up so please turn off when you are not in the cabin.

Walking on the ice when the pond is frozen is prohibited. This includes fishing, skating, or use of any kind. Please stay off for safety reasons.

The tiny house does not contain a bathroom. There is a shared, modern bathroom and wood-fired sauna approximately 150 ft away. As we have two rental properties, the sauna can be reserved on a first-come basis as designated on a sign-up sheet during your stay. If the sauna is in use or reserved, please return shortly to enjoy your turn. We provide headlamps and all paths are lit with solar lights for evening walks and bathroom visits.

My house is in a nice neighborhood 7 blocks from Madison County courthouse and historic Square. The Airbnb space is the lower level of my house and you pass through a common area. The main bedroom has a queen bed, loveseat, desk A smart TV with multiple streaming services and Wi-Fi. The second bedroom also has a queen bed. The third bedroom has a full size bed and place to put a pack and play which I provide. The bath has a large, walk in shower with rain head and several Toiletry choices. The kitchenette has a table and chairs, refrigerator with a freezer , microwave, dishes and oregano coffee maker. Big deck in back with grill when needed, lots of outdoor seating .HEATED COWBOY POOL durning warmer weather.

Dogs are welcome. We had over 90 dogs stay last year. Not one bad review from our canine guests. Completely Fenced in yard and complete freedom to run. My dog Bixby has never met a dog he didn’t like. Bixby weighs 2 pounds.

The Home Place, built in 1895, sits three blocks from the Winterset square. It showcases local businesses and Winterset history while offering modern amenities and the comforts of home. Soaps and cleaning supplies are as fragrant free as possible, allowing for a near hypoallergenic haven. No pets for this reason. We offer a king bed, a queen bed, a dedicated office, and a handicapped entrance ramp. Cots, Pack-N-Play, and baby gates are available upon request. Welcome to The Home Place.

The space
The main house is all on one level, although there are steps to the main floor from the back door. We will provide a safety gate in case the steps are a problem for children. We provide two luggage racks per bedroom, as well as extra blankets and towels. Each bedroom offers its own closet, small dresser, mirror, charger station, blinds (queen bedroom only), room darkening curtains, fan, bedside lamps, and chair.

Guests may access the entire house, except for the garage. Feel free to use the half bath and laundry facilities in the rustic basement. Watch your step on the way down.

Handicap items available on request: shower chair, handicap toilet with arms. The doors aren't extra wide, but a small wheelchair would easily fit. Please let us know if we need to remove some furniture to accommodate a wheelchair. The house will accommodate walkers, though there are rugs. Plenty of room to spread out in the living area with lots of extra seating. The living room features a 65" TV. The kitchen has a Keurig with K-cups included or bring your own favorite flavor. Kitchen is stocked with dishes, utensils and pots/pans. The primary bedroom has a king bed, tv and attached half bath. The 2nd bedroom features a "cloffice" for office use or cosmetic & hair purposes. It has a day bed with trundle (see photos). There is a full bathroom in between the bedrooms. Currently the yard is being reworked, however the front porch is a darling space to enjoy coffee or wine!

The most unique stay in Winterset! Legacy Stone House AirBnB is a historic residence located one mile east of Winterset, Iowa. Built in 1856 during the Settlement Era of Madison County, it is one of nearly 100 stone houses built during that time in the area. Officially named the William Anzi Nichols House, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Convenient centralized location if visiting Madison County’s six covered bridges and two minutes from grocery, gas and dining.

The space

This is a private residence located on our homestead property just outside of Winterset. The stone house is located near a busy highway, so there is some road noise.

The stairway that leads up to the bedroom/bathroom is narrow and steep. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU CONSIDER YOUR ABILITY TO NAVIGATE THESE STAIRS BEFORE BOOKING.

On the main level of the house you will find the kitchen, living room, dining table and laundry/mud room. On the second level you will find a small sitting area, and the bedroom with one queen size bed. Two additional twin size air mattresses can be added and a possible third upon request. The bathroom is located upstairs as well.

We also run a small auto body and restoration business on the property but it should not interfere with your stay.

Guests are welcome to walk the property near the stone house. Pets should remain on a leash as we are located next to a busy Highway.

Pets are welcome here. No more than two pets. Our pet fee is $75 per pet for 1-2 night stays. Please reach out to us if you are bringing your pets for a longer than two nights day. Please make sure you have included pets in your reservation.

We ask that pets should never be left alone, unattended in the house, unless they are in a crate. You will be charged if damages occur. If excessive barking occurs while you are away, and they are in a crate, we will reach out to you.

We do have pets on the property including one dog, two cats and several chickens.

The Botanist Cabin sits nestled in our cedar tree grove, offering a cozy escape into nature. Curl up on the green Victorian couch with locally roasted coffee or tea… or enjoy a magical dinner inside the conservatory under twinkling lights and lush greenery.

Drift off in our oversized treehouse-style loft bed—larger than a king, with oversized blankets and a plush pillow-top mattress under a vintage covering, evoking the nostalgia of a pleated retro van.

Wander through scenic woodland trails, relax in a hammock, or gather around the fire pit for those crisp evening chats. Our Victorian conservatory is open for you to lounge among the plants.

Although we do not have a kitchen, treat this space as you would a campground. A private grill is available for cooking, as well as the shared fire-pit area. Grilling utensils are provided, but please bring any additional cookware you may need.

The 14x30 cabin features an attached porch, dining table, living area, coffee bar, and a retro fridge with freezer. Climate-controlled with heat + A/C. WiFi is available via hotspot.

The loft includes bedding, oversized blankets, a comforter, and pillows. Please note: access requires using a ladder.

Bathrooms are located inside the conservatory with fully tiled, open waterfall showers. You will need to walk to the conservatory, as it is not attached to the cabin. Towels are provided, but please do not leave personal items in the shared space.

Enjoy the fire pit area in our flower field—firewood is available. You’re welcome to cook over the fire or use our pop-up grill. This is also our designated smoking area; we ask that guests refrain from smoking elsewhere.

Winterset // Madison County is full of hidden gems—hiking, kayaking, and exploring await. Our Hallmark-worthy town is just 10 minutes away, offering charming shops and cafes. The Holliwell Covered Bridge, a historic beauty, is just half a mile down the road and marks the last stop for kayaking adventures.

⚠️ Note: Another cabin is located on the opposite side of our woods. While you’ll have plenty of privacy, you may share the fire pit and bathrooms during your stay.

Our property is part of our private residence, but don’t worry—we’re not as close as you might think! While it’s usually just us here, we also host weddings, elopements, private events, retreats, tours, photoshoots, and classes on occasion.

Aside from weddings, these may take place during your stay, but we’ll always do our best to inform you in advance. Who knows—you may even want to join in on the fun!

You’re welcome to wander the property, relax in the conservatory, explore the trails, or cozy up by the fire pit. And don’t be surprised if you run into a fluffy chicken or two! 🐓✨

Other things to note
The first thing you’ll notice upon arrival is our “Iris Aisle” sign on the fence. Pull into the driveway parking area and enter the property through the woods. The cabin is about 100 feet from the parking area, so be prepared for a short walk. We’ll leave a yellow cart out for you to haul your things.

🌿 Seasonal Note: If you’re visiting in winter or spring, you may encounter muddy areas—this is the countryside, after all! We recommend bringing boots or shoes you don’t mind getting dirty.

To reach the cabin: Enter the woods, take an immediate left at the fire pit, then follow the path left into the trees for the cabin or right toward the conservatory entrance.

🚿 Bathrooms: A short walk from the cabin, located inside the conservatory. There are two bathrooms with showers—first and last doors. Use the main entrance with the black doors in summer and the back door in winter. The left door will be unlocked, though it may need an extra push to open.

🛁 Shower & Towels: Towels are kept in the cabin dresser. Place used towels in the basket by the yellow chair.

📶 Internet: Connect via the hotspot located near the vanity inside the cabin.

💧 Water: Use the hydrant near the fire pit area or the back door of the conservatory. Our well water is tested and safe for drinking. We try to keep a gallon of water in the fridge for convenience.

☕ Coffee & Tea: Chemex filters are in the top dresser drawer. Coffee and kettle are on the table.

🔥 Fire Pit: Use only the chopped wood provided by the fire pit area.

🥩 Grill: The grill and propane are behind the rocker on the cabin porch. Utensils are provided.
