The Artist's Beach House is situated on the Antigonish Harbour just ten minutes from the lovely university town of Antigonish This private and quiet retreat feels like it’s worlds away. The house is surrounded by water – and 6 acres of land. The beach goes on forever and is nicely secluded – swimming is excellent in the warmest waters north of the Carolina's. So is canoeing and kayaking on the harbour where there’s so much to discover. The grounds are spectacular with gardens everywhere. In season, the best lobster in the world can be had fresh off the boats nearby.

This architect designed house is ideal for entertaining with wrap around decks and porches complete with ample outdoor eating areas. We have a wheel chair ramp (available on request) on the back deck which makes the whole first floor with two bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms accessible. Indoors you’ll be greeted with warm cherry wood throughout, walls full of original contemporary art, oriental rugs on the floors and sumptuous furnishings everywhere. All the amenities are there to pamper you during your stay. When the nights are cool there’s nothing better than curling up in front of one of two fireplaces with a good book or movie. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, colourful and artistic.

We can make the office available upon request, for those who will need to do some work during their stay. It's a private room with desks and a printer plus a good library.

Overall it's a rare and special property with many features such as private trails throughout the woods, a firepit at the beach and lovely gardens. All of our guests tell us that the photos don’t do it justice. It truly is a beautiful place!

- "This property is beautiful, relaxing, and quiet. There are extensive lawns and a long stretch of private rocky beach with many shorebirds. The house itself is large, with four enclosed bedrooms and one living area downstairs that can be converted to sleeping space. As described, the house is home to an artist, who lives next door to the property during the summertime. There are many works of art and items of unique character throughout the house. There were extensive instructions in the welcome binder regarding cleaning, using the dishwasher and washing machine, recycling regulations, and conserving water in the event that the hand-dug well begins to go dry during a hot summer. (As this was a wet summer, we had no issues with water during our stay.) It is important to carefully read the detailed instructions and to adhere to them, as additional fees or charges may apply if the instructions are disregarded. The house was well-stocked with dishes and cookware, toilet paper, paper towels, pantry items, and hand soap. The heat pump that provided cool air on humid days was much appreciated. There is ample seating, and linens and towels are provided. If we could suggest one thing it would be to add a clothesline for bathing suits and towels, or for more eco-friendly drying of clothing. Our interactions with our host were positive and friendly and she was quick to welcome us to the property."

We are 15 minutes from the town of Antigonish, where you will find St. Francis Xavier University, well-stocked stores, and an assortment of restaurants..

For those seeking more beach time, you will find several beaches close by: rugged Dunn's Beach (30 min walk), 2 miles of sandy beach at Pomquet Provincial Park (10 minute drive), Mahoney's Beach (30 min).

Keppoch Mountain, a recreational site for biking, hiking, disc golf, and winter sports is 25 minutes away.

We are located 10 minutes off the Trans Canada Highway, making it a perfect spot to take a rest on the way to Cape Breton or the Newfoundland Ferry.

Lobster season here is May and June. The wharf is just down the road.

Lie on one of the sun loungers and enjoy the view of the inlet and nature from the balcony terrace. If you want to sit even closer to the water, head down to the cottage's own wharf and make yourself comfortable on one of the typical Canadian wooden chairs. In the mood for some exercise? At the boathouse you will find a canoe, two single kayaks, a double kayak and life jackets.
Afterwards, treat yourself to something tasty from the grill. This is located on the upper floor in a so-called "Screenporch". This is a covered outdoor area, which was completely sealed with mosquito netting, so that you have -even after sunset- peace from small pests.

The weather doesn't play along or it's just too cold to stay outside longer?
An outside staircase leads to the main entrance of the house. After taking off your shoes and jackets, you'll enter a great room, which features a fully equipped kitchen, a spacious dining area with seating for 6, and a cozy living room.
Light the fireplace and enjoy the quick and cozy warmth, as well as the fantastic view through the large panoramic windows.
Behind the living/dining area are two bedrooms (a master bedroom and a room with two single beds) and a bathroom with shower tub.
As part of the modernization work, the master bedroom received a new king-size bed and a new mattress.

Via a staircase at the kitchen you reach the ground floor. There you first enter our lovingly named "cinema room". If you don't like the smaller TV set in the living room, you will find it here; a huge TV and a surround system provide real movie enjoyment; a leather couch for coziness.
Furthermore, the third bedroom with a queen-size bed and new mattress and another bathroom with shower are located on this floor.
A washer and dryer are also available for use on the ground floor.
You are still not really warm? Then use the sauna, also on the ground floor of the house. Also in the sauna and the adjoining small relaxation room, the views of the estuary through the built-in panoramic windows are a delight.

The house, built in 2006, is situated in a secluded location in the middle of nature and yet so central that you can reach the nearest town of Antigonish in 10-15 minutes by car.

Our property is surrounded by 24 acres of beautiful lawn that is right on the ocean. Your front door is less then two minutes walk to the beach.

Guests are welcome to invite friends (max of 4 at a time), however due to our use of a well we cannot accommodate more then six people staying or using the facilities.

We provide extra bath towels, extra linens for a mid-week change (if requested). Lawn chairs to take to the beach, as well as large beach towels.

We provide coffee, tea and condiments. We have a full kitchen including all the dishes, pots and silverware. Kayaks are available (at your own risk) and there are large closets in each bedroom with hangers.

The house has two bedrooms, a large bathroom, a fully appointed kitchen and a small living room.

One bedroom has a queen and a single bed. The other bedroom has a double bed that sleeps two people. It sleep five adults comfortably. There is a queen pull out sofa bed in the small living room that sleeps 2 more people, but the pull out sofa restricts the space.

The home is winterized and available year round. It is close to several beaches and is located along a scenic coastal drive on the Sunrise Trail. You may see rabbits and deer as it is surrounded by forest. There is a picnic table and a bbq to dine outside. It has a large wooden back deck. A beautiful ocean beach and waterfall are 2km away. It is a short drive to the Arisaig beach and lighthouse.

The cottage has a dishwasher, a clothes washer and dryer, outside calling via Skype calling, a smart television with Netflix and excellent wifi.

It is self check in so guests can arrive at their leisure.

- "We liked the grounds. They were private, surrounded by trees. Adirondack chairs surrounding the fire pit were nice. The cottage was well-stocked with the basics (condiments, coffee, etc.). Communications from the property manager were complete, leaving us no surprises. All four of us thought that the cottage was good for our needs. A suggestion for an easy improvement would be more available closet space. There were adequate closets, but they were nearly full of items that probably belonged to the owner, something that wouldn't be expected for a rental property. We appreciated having a clothes washer and dryer. The washer was tricky to operate, but instructions were clear. It would also help to replace the outside steps to the cottage entrance. They were deteriorating."

- "The house is, technically, as described but there are a few design issues that made it hard to use. The ladder, which is needed to access the loft, blocks the bathroom door. So if you have it in place for climbing, it has to be moved to open the loo door, then moved back to climb back up again. We have stayed in tiny houses before and found them easier to maneuver around. Which would be fine but at this price it should be somewhat more comfy. Caveat Emptor"

The property is located in a quiet area surrounded by nature with wildlife and still only 8 min. to the small university town (Antigonish), that offers everything the heart desires. The property has a size of approx. 25 acres with its own waterfront, 150 m of ocean front along the Pomquet Cove and 250 m of ocean front along the Antigonish Harbour The water in the bay is shallow (good for children) and the beach is made up of stones and pebbles.

Antigonish: Besides the famous St. F.X. University, Antigonish offers all conveniences of a small town with good infrastructure: a large and renowned hospital (St. Martha's Hospital), countless restaurants, theatres, movie theatres, many shops and stores. Golf course, tennis courts, a sports arena with exciting hockey games, swimming pools, home department stores, museums, galleries, pubs with live music, the popular weekly farmers market. Antigonish is the home of many annual festivals; among them the largest and oldest Highland-Games outside of Scotland.

- "The Ems Cottage was nice and in a remarkable setting. There are kayaks and a canoe available for use. Lots of sea and song birds to see. The only downside was lack of air conditioning and because there were also no blinds on the south facing windows...the house was like a sauna from 1 pm to 8 pm each day. We did use the screen room on the side of the house to eat our dinner, which was good because the dining area and living room were not tolerable. There was also a lot of issues with the plumbing!"

It's an open kitchen and living room area. It's small but if you're looking for a place that has a full kitchen including a dishwasher this will be perfect for you.

Upper level 2 bedroom in century old farmhouse with private entrance and work nook. This garden retreat is perfect for artists and writers to immerse themselves in their craft. Positioned overlooking the harbour and surrounded by nature, with easy access to the quaint town of Antigonish. Meander down to the pond to contemplate and take in wildlife, or relax amongst the flower and veggie patch. A 10 minute drive to Dunn's beach for walking, paddling and cooling off in the summer heat.

The space
The entrance is the main house door via the covered porch area. This is the door on the left if you are facing the house. The entryway has a coat rack and area for shoes. Please remove all shoes before going upstairs. Upstairs, the large open main room to the right with the kitchenette equipped with an air-fryer convection oven, convection stovetop and fully equipped kitchen with dishes and cooking tools to easily prepare full home cooked meals. There is a rustic table with seating for four and then over near the large casement window with harbour/ocean views there is a tv corner nook with a fold out sofa.

The bedrooms are on the other side of the landing. The master is a larger room with lots of natural light and a king-sized bed with fresh crisp linens. The smaller bedroom has a view of the property behind and gets amazing sunsets. It has a twin bed and a dedicated built-in work space. Both bedrooms have plenty of closet space. The bathroom has a full bath with nostalgic and cosy stylings.

There is a portable washer in the suite for use that hooks into the kitchen faucet along with a large foldable drying rack. No dryer in the unit.

Guest access
Guests have access to the upstairs unit, the front porch, front yard and side garden with vegetables and flowers. There is a path between the two barns behind the house that leads down to the pond, which guests are welcome to wander down and enjoy at their own risk.

There is an active flower farm on the property run by the downstairs tenants. She is very busy in the summer months, so please do not disturb her so she doesn't lose focus. Her beautiful arrangements are available for purchase to enjoy in your suite. If you would like this arranged in advance, please let us know.

Other things to note
The suite is not suitable for small children as all rooms are connected by a landing with stairs. It would be fine for older children who stairs would not be an issue for.

There is a family with a small child and black lab dog and cat living downstairs. Due to this, the suite is suitable for guests who are aware of this and are able to keep noise levels down after 8pm, and are comfortable with a friendly dog being on property. The front yard is fenced in, so the dog will not access this area. Unfortunately we cannot allow other dogs on the property.

If you are coming for the summer months, plan ahead and bring bug spray and/or protective clothing as the mosquitos and black flys are common especially in late July and August.

Please note that are on a well and septic system. Our well water is high in iron, which leads to the water being discoloured sometimes (especially in the summer months.) It is not harmful, but we do provide filtered drinking water with a countertop dispenser for your convenience. There is a supply of full jugs under the counter, if they need replacing during your stay.

A beautiful four bedroom, 2 story, family home directly on the ocean. This large manicured property features a stunning view of Antigonish Harbour and Mahoney's Beach. The property is literally surrounded by water on 3 sides.

The space
The main floor of the house is beautiful hardwood flooring, fully furnished and equipped with all modern appliances. It has a complete kitchen with 2 exits to a large, 2 level outdoor deck. Washer and dryer are also included as well as a deep freezer. Two Bedrooms are located on the main level and one is located on the second floor. There is a basement with a spare bed and woodstove.

Mahoney’s Beach House is characterized by a long tree lined driveway, fruit orchards, vegetable gardens, flower gardens and nature’s abundance. Frequent visitors include red foxes, deer, bald eagles, osprey, great blue heron, chipmunks, and many more. A stunning view allows for an intimate vista of the changing tides and the sandbars, mere feet off the edge of the property.

The property has been recently upgraded to 2 new wood stoves, heating system, new roof, and new chimney. As well, there is an electrical heat option.
A two minute walk to the public beach and only a 10 minute drive to Antigonish for all the local shopping needs. The nearby Regional Hospital is a short 8 minute drive away.

The Mahoneys Beach House has been described by many as the million dollar view.

Guest access
Guests have full access to the house and property (except some storage areas in the basement and locked closets).
This includes use of BBQ, decks, canoe/kayaks, fire pits and property vegetable gardens.

The Artist's Beach House is situated on the Antigonish Harbour just ten minutes from a lovely university town. The beachfront house is situated on 6 private acres of a park like setting. This private and quiet retreat feels like it’s worlds away. The beach goes on forever and is nicely secluded – swimming is excellent in the warmest waters north of the Carolina's. So is canoeing and kayaking on the harbour where there’s so much to discover.

The space
This architect designed house is ideal for entertaining with wrap around decks and porches complete with ample outdoor eating areas. We have a wheel chair ramp on the back deck which makes the whole first floor with two bedrooms accessible. Indoors you’ll be greeted with warm cherry wood throughout, walls full of original art, oriental rugs on the floors and sumptuous furnishings everywhere. When the nights are cool there’s nothing better than curling up in front of one of two fireplaces. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, colorful and artistic.
The views from every room are spectacular. All of our guests tell us that the photos don’t do it justice.

Guest access
The entire house from June through September. It's located just 10 minutes from the charming town of Antigonish, home to St Francis Xavier University and St. Martha's Regional Hospital.
