- "After spending 35 plus miles on back country trails, rolling into Lake City (after a briefish stop at the Lake City Brewery for sustenence) this property suddenly went from being an over night place to stay, to our home for the evening. House is very clean, cute and tidy with many whimsical and heart warming touches! This is our second time staying here and as anyone knows who spends time out and about from time to time, repeat stays speaks volumes! I am hesitant to speak too highly of this property so as not to have it become so popular that it possibly become hard to reserve, but at this time, I cant help it! This place is a gem! Love it and the Gowdys are extremely hospitable! We, shall, return..."

Please note: the cabin does not have parking spaces to accommodate long trailers and ohv’s. We CAN accommodate shorter pop-up campers.
Everyone loves Lake City in the summertime, when the fly fishing is good and the wildflowers are in bloom. In fall, the Aspens turn the mountainside aglow and it’s the perfect time to summit a peak. If you've been to Lake City, then you already know wintertime here is the best-kept secret in the Rocky Mountains. It's a friendly, walkable town where your kids can roam to the local ice-cream shop, go sledding, and slide across a frozen pond -- all just steps from your front door. Lake City is the ideal winter getaway for families that want to experience a mountain winter, but want to avoid the crowds and expense of the major ski towns.
Even beginners can easily learn to ski or snowboard at the town's ski hill - complete with the only pommel lift still in operation today. Daily passes with equipment rental are just $20 - a remarkable bargain! The local sledding spot is just a block from our cabin and is a great place to sip hot chocolate and watch your kids have the time of their lives. Our favorite family activity is a long, snowy walk into the mountains that rise behind our cabin - be sure and bring your snowshoes or microspikes! For the more adventurous, Lake City offers guided snowmobile tours and a world-class ice climbing park, with NO LINES!!! Winter festivals include an annual "brew-ski" atop frozen Lake San Cristobal, ice-fishing contests, and more.
We chose our cabin because it is in a friendly, neighborhood setting. The town and its amenities are just a short walk over the bridge. Our Texas-based family lived in this cabin during COVID and we want to share the joys of a Colorado winter with others. However, this cabin is in a quiet neighborhood NOT a tourist area. It's not a good fit for groups that want to have loud parties or do anything that might disturb our kind neighbors. We also can not accommodate large trailers and OHV’s. Small pop-up campers are ok.
The cabin is cozy and warm - thanks to the propane heater- and is easy to access even in the snow (no scary, steep driveway). The two bedrooms are set up for a couple with two children, although the twin beds do combine to form a spacious king-sized bed. The kitchen is fully-stocked, with tons of spices and generally some condiments and shelf-stable items on hand for anyone's use. Plan to cook some meals, because restaurants in Lake City have sporadic winter hours. Unlike many remote homes, our cabin has fast, reliable internet, solid wifi, and roku devices for connecting the two televisions to all your streaming services. The fenced-in backyard boats an in-ground fire-pit, perfect for s'mores! Our home is 420 friendly, but please limit all smoking to the porches.
- "We had such a great stay in this house. Great location and the house is extremely well set up. Perfect for a couple or small family. Kitchen is so well equipped and the overall arrangement made the for a comfortable stay. We would certainly choose this Home again for a return to Lake City." - "This was a great home base for our stay in Estes Park from hiking the Handies to driving the Alpine Loop to enjoying all that Lake City offers. It was roomy and had all the appurtenances needed. The back yard was great too!! We loved everything about it and look forward to staying here again on our next trip!!"

Location, Location, Location! Many people feel this property is similar to being on a houseboat. The spacious deck is directly over the water of Lake San Cristobal. You can hear the lapping of waves as you read or eat on the lovely front deck. The majestic mountains surrounding the lake are green in summer, aspen covered in fall, and snow covered in winter.
The area is well know for its five fourteen thousand foot mountain peaks. Hiking on the many surrounding trails will follow streams, waterfalls, and valleys filled with wildflowers. There is also the wonderful Alpine Loop that takes jeeps and four-wheelers across the continental divide to the high country land of mountain Shepherds and tundra. Silverton and ghost towns such as Animas Forks are also along this route.
Of course fishermen think this is paradise. The lake and all the surrounding streams provide wonderful fishing. In September Lake City has a Wine and Music Festival. In winter there is abundant snowshoeing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice climbing. The beauty and serenity of the forests at this time offer experiences to be remembered. This is the time of year that captures the quiet of the season. Relaxing with a book by the fire is also a welcome treat. This home provides a respite from the usual business of the world.

This is a cute-as-a-bug one bedroom log cabin. The bedroom is in the roomy loft area, with king sized bed, overlooking the ample living area below. Decks on front and back of cabin. Private setting, with no other cabins or homes too close. - "My husband and I stayed in the cabin for six nights with our two pups. The cabin is very comfortable and had all the amenities you would expect. If the 'camping' you enjoy most includes plush carpeting, cable TV, WiFi, full kitchen and a comfortable king sized bed, and if your idea of 'rustic' means a view of majestic mountains out your many-windowed living room, then you will enjoy being a guest at our Rocky Top Vacation Home Rental.
Our modern log housekeeping 'cabin' offers the cozy comfort of all wood interiors and comfortable furnishings. Private BBQ grill and picnic table allows you to enjoy outdoor dining, and gliding cedar porch chairs are a comfortable alternative to 'sittin' round a campfire'. Rent both sides of the duplex to accommodate larger groups.
The first floor contains the kitchen, living/dining, bedroom with king bed and bathroom. The upper floor has a bedroom with king bed and another full bathroom.
The kitchen is equipped with full sized electric range, full sized refrigerator, microwave oven, coffee maker, and all the dishes, pots, pans, etc. that you should need. Towels and linens are provided, too.
We have a lovely, private setting, but are still convenient to town, being 1/4 mile north of the town limits - close enough to walk to restaurants and stores, but far enough to be 'away from it all', with the Crystal Lake Trail as close as your back door.
Haven't been to Lake City? Well, if the Colorado vacation you dream about includes a remote, historic mountain town nestled in a valley of breathtaking mountains, clear alpine lakes and gurgling streams, then you won't be disappointed with Lake City. Founded as a mining town in the 1870's, and now a Colorado Historic District, Lake City is considered one of the undiscovered gems of the Rockies. Located at the junction of two scenic byways, it remains surprisingly unspoiled by commercialism and 'glitz'. It is a jeep -lovers and flyfishing-lovers paradise, as well as shops, restaurants, movie theater, live theater and concerts, museum, and did I mention mountains?? We have 5 '14ers' right here in our county!

Definitely go back again" - "The cabin and the owners were very nice. The cabin was really nice inside. King beds were the best. It was very quiet and Cabin #2 parking next to the cabin was great! The gas stove was so pretty! Everything was easy to access. The 'only' negative I can say is that the TV was just a normal "DISH" stations......So if you have used to streaming everything (without commercials) then I would say put your Firestick or Roku stick in your suitcase and -VIOLA - problem solved!!!! I loved this cabin and the proximity to EVERYTHING in Lake City. I give it 5 stars!!!! (Did I mention KING BED!)"

- "This was easily on of our most favorite vacations and the setting and the cabin were perfect for it. The view from the front porch each morning or next to the campfire at night was nothing less than inspirational. The 5 nites we spent there flew by. There was absolutely NOTHING that we wanted for in this cabin. Its much more roomy than the photos appear, and has a very well equipped kitchen, and all the supplies. The lake was very nearby and a small place to park our kayaks for our morning paddle on a pristine glass mountain lake surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in colorado. The bed was comfortable. You could easily fit 4 or 5 persons there but...with two it was perfect. The place was immaculately clean and so many little touches such as maps to the hiking, guides to the area, games and puzzles, dry wood for the campfire, a few blocks of firestarter, a great gas grill, a full size fridge and freezer. Did I mention the views? Thank you for hosting us in this beautiful place. I am quite certain we will be back and for longer next time. john and jennie"

***Please read the full description below***
At 10,500 feet, this cabin is located in a remote part of southwest Colorado (between Creede and Lake City) and surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery the Rocky Mountains have to offer. It is secluded, offers privacy, and breathtaking views with comfortable accommodations. It’s built overlooking a beautiful valley. The cabin water is drawn directly out of the mountain it’s built upon. Propane gas runs appliances, lights and heats water for the kitchen and bathroom. Electricity is neither needed nor available, and we do enforce a no generator policy. Anything which needs to be plugged in will not be of use and you will not miss the electricity. You are truly "off the grid" at this cabin, and your mind and body will thank you for it. Don't worry, technology, electricity, restaurants and other conveniences are just a short beautiful drive over Slumgullion Pass into Lake City if need be. The cabin is pet friendly as well.
Recreational activities around the cabin include miles and miles of scenic trails for mountain hiking/climbing, photography, fishing, or just relaxing. Moose and Elk are often seen and several kinds of hummingbirds are always around the feeders. The colorful wildflowers in summer, the wind blowing through the Aspens, and the spectacular fall foliage are nature at its best. Five stocked ponds and 1.5 miles of streams provide guests with private fishing, so beginners to avid fly fishermen will have ample opportunity to wet their lines. Peace and quiet is not something you have to seek out... the wind blowing through the Aspens will be the only thing you'll hear while reading your book on the deck. There is zero light pollution at night so stargazing is one of the most incredible things you will ever witness. Also, look no further than the area to escape the heat of the summer. Even in the dog days of summer, the average temperature during the day is 70 and nights can drop below freezing. Day trip opportunities "off the ranch" are abundant- anything from climbing one of the seven area 14K mountains, fishing the Rio Grande river, hiking the Continental Divide Trail, renting a jeep in Lake City and driving over Engineer Pass, as well as something as simple as having an ice cream cone, sitting on a Lake City bench. There is so much to see and do in one of the most beautiful areas of the Rockies. Thank you for taking a look at our cabin and we hope to see you there soon enjoying the simple life!
***There is no cell or internet which allows you to totally relax and not worry about looking at your phone 100 times a day. Reading a book becomes possible again. It is an amazing feeling for sure***
Location: Oleo is located off of Highway 149 north of Creede between mile marker 56 and 57. The entrance will be before the start of Slumgullion Pass and Rambouillet Creek. As you turn in you will need to drive a mile or so before you will see the ranch. You will see the Oleo Ranch sign from the highway.
Miles From:
Lake City, CO – 17
Creede, CO – 36
Gunnison, CO – 72
Denver, CO – 272
Albuquerque, NM – 303
Weather: Average temps are around 70 day and 30 at night. Short rain storms can roll in almost every day, but it is usually just a quick storm
Altitude: Oleo is at 10,500 feet. It may take a day to get acclimated to the altitude. Try to drink plenty of water before coming up and continue when at the ranch. Also water boils at a lower temperature at this altitude compared to sea level. This can alter cooking times for some dishes (pasta)
Electricity: There is no electricity at the ranch. Everything runs off of propane. Each cabin has a full stove with 4 cook top burners, a refrigerator (not full size), and hot water
Water: The water for the ranch comes directly from a mountain spring and is tested each year
Hot water: Each cabin has a standard water heater, just like you find in most homes
TV/Internet/Cell Phones: None of these items can work off of propane (thankfully) so no to all
Generators: we do not allow generators to be run at any time. This is to keep the noise down
Lights: The lights work off of propane and are turned on by a lever and using a match. Very simple operation. If you plan on reading at night you should bring a book light
Heater: There is a wall heater in each cabin, but the cabins retain heat well and you may not need the heater
Kitchen: The kitchen has a stove, refrigerator, and full size sink
Utensils, pots/pans, glasses and dishes: Each cabin has everything you need. You may want to bring some sturdy paper plates as it is all hand washing/drying
Bathroom: The bathrooms have walk in showers, sink and a toilet
Bath and dish towels, paper towels, and toilet paper: all are provided
Cleaning supplies: dishwashing soap, garbage bags are provided
Coffee: Coffee is brewed using a percolator.
Fireplace and wood: each cabin has a fireplace and there will be wood provided on your deck. If splitting is needed, each cabin will have an ax and chopping block
Dogs:
$20 per dog, per night. Limit of 2 dogs per cabin. Dogs over 75 lbs. must have approval of management at time of reservation. You must bring a plastic or metal dog kennel for your dog when you are away from cabin. Pets must ALWAYS be secured inside the kennel when the cabin is unoccupied.
If your dog is one that barks at anything that moves, flies or walks, they will not be accepted.
Dogs must be kept under control at all times. When your dog is around others, it is expected to be on a leash. If management asks you to have your dog on a leash, it is expected for you to do so promptly. We have extra leashes on site at the managers cabin.
Dispose of dog poop properly.
KEEP ALL DOGS OFF FURNITURE AND BEDS
Renter is expected to clean cabin of all dog hair before leaving.
When registering at check in, the pet owner agrees to abide by the Oleo Ranch Pet Policy. You are responsible for any damage or injury caused by your pet and must absolve Oleo Limited of any liability resulting from your pets actions.
Food: You will need to bring in all your food. Access to the nearest grocery stores is Lake City (17 miles) and Creede (36 miles). There is a small store at Freemons Ranch (over Spring Creek pass on the way to Creede) as well, but not a large selection.
Grocery stores: Alamosa will have a couple large grocery stores with good prices. Also pick up your beer, wine and liquor there. If not, Creede will have a grocery store, but higher prices and a more limited choice. Lake City has a grocery store as well, but with the same situation as Creede
Grills: Each cabin has a gas grill on the deck
How does food stay cool: There is a fridge in each cabin, but it is smaller than normal. If your stay is only a couple days you will be just fine. If you have a big party and staying longer, then we suggest bringing in some coolers and ice. The ice will stay frozen if the coolers are kept outside
Good Meals: Pretty much everything will taste good up there, but here are a few suggestions that always seem to work well
Breakfast – eggs, sausage, blueberry pancakes, cereal, etc.
Lunch – sandwiches, etc.
Dinner – steaks, grilled chicken, spaghetti, baked potatoes, chili, corn bread, etc. Food taste pretty darn good up there so plenty of options.
Suggested Clothes: normal cool weather clothes. Bring some rain gear as well. It can get very cold in evenings and will be in morning. Expect 30’s even in July. Bring some mud boots if you plan to fly fish in river.
Other suggested items: batteries, flash light, binoculars, camera, lightweight fishing gear, sunscreen, lip balm, books and magazines. Without the internet it is possible to finish a book so bring that one you been planning on reading for some time now.
Fishing on the Ranch: There are 5 ponds on the ranch that will provide great fishing by either using a fly rod or a basic rod/reel set up. There is a worm farm by the old corral next to the Willows cabin, if you choose to use a hook. We urge “catch and release” but keeping a few for dinner is always ok. Fly or spin fishing is also available in the small Cebolla Creek that runs through the ranch. Many streams and lakes are in the area nearby as well.
ATV’s: We do not allow ATV’s to be driven on the ranch property. You can park your trailer in the barn area, and trailer them to the many trailheads in the area.
- "The property was incredibly beautiful. The property manager was very kind and easy to work with. They replaced firewood as we used it daily in the fireplace. It was very clean. Propane lighting took a little time to get use to. I kept reaching for the light switch…..😋 No WI-FI was okay and allowed us to unplug from the world but was a bit bothersome as I dropped my husband off for a fly fishing walk and had to guess when he would be through. Next time we will purchase a satellite phone just for emergencies and fishing. We would definitely stay again."

- "Was everything as outlined in listing, remote, quiet, relaxing, great fishing, plenty of wildlife" - "We loved our time at the cabin. Saw plenty of wildlife, caught fish and cooked them, amazing star gazing and very relaxing. It was so good to not have cell phones and tvs to distract us. I would definitely recommend." - "met all expectations" - "Great experience" - "The property was immaculate. Our cabin, the Willows, was located very close to the stocked fishing ponds where the kids enjoyed catching fish everyday. We understand that the cabin is located in a rural area and expected it to be rustic, we did not expect it to be so clean. There was no evidence of spiders or dust/dirt anywhere. Even the fireplace hearth was clean. The Davis' family worked hard to make us feel at home and we did. I have and will continue to recommend these cabins for a getaway from the race of life and get the kids off their screens. The kitchen was fully equipped with pots, pans, and all the necessities, down to a coffee percolator (you may want to google how to use one before you go - it's not that hard to use and it makes the best flavor!). We found a nice laundromat in Lake City to do a quick wash while we explored the cute old city and picked up some fabulous ice cream at the Lake City Soda Company across from the park along with some beautiful locally made pottery. Our kids enjoy the outdoors, ages 15, 13, 9, (girl, boy, girl) and love Oleo Ranch. This was our 2nd time to stay at Oleo - our 15 year old girl has begged for 5 years to go back and is already asking when we will return. Thanks yall for a great family vacation! Catherine, James, Leslie, John Ashton, Lauren (oh and our "Lucky" Dog loved chasing the groundhogs!!!)"

- "The cabin was the perfect size and had exactly what was needed for an "off the grid" experience. Beautiful scenery , very peaceful, and excellent star gazing. Close enough to both Lake City and Creede if you feel the need for company - we didn't." - "We love this place. We have stayed at Oleo many times before. The updates are very nice. We especially enjoy the scenery, the wildlife, fishing and we love the peace and quiet. Jeremy, the ranch manager, was wonderful. He was kind, courteous and very helpful."

- "Off-grid peace and joy, a rarity today and very welcomed. The host was incredible as was the property, wouldn't change a thing." - "We loved our stay at Oleo Ranch. We rented the Loft. It was located in a perfect location on the ranch. We enjoyed seeing moose, a black bear, and catching tons of trout in each of the ponds. An amazing location with great hospitality. Thanks!" - "We’ve been coming to Oleo for many years and we love everything about the ranch! We’ve always stayed in LaGarita but stayed in the Loft this time and it was perfect. The remodel is absolutely gorgeous and we loved the attention to detail from the color scheme to the artwork. Just beautiful! We were in awe, as usual, with the abundance of wildlife right outside the door. Nothing better than seeing deer and moose right outside your door everyday. Oleo has it all, from great fishing to hiking. Love Oleo’s seclusion and being off grid….family time uninterrupted. Jeremy went above and beyond to make our stay perfect. Very friendly and on top of everything. We absolutely love our time here!"

- "Great 👍" - "We had a great time in this cute updated cabin! Super convenient and comfortable." - "Very nice cabin for three people. Beds were comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed for our two night stay. Couch and eating area were nice." - "I was lucky enough to talk personally w/ Teresa. She was so nice. The website had first told me the cabin was available and then it suddenly wasn't. I checked in w/ Teresa and she verified that we had successfully booked it. When we arrived the door was open, the cabin was clean and the key was on the table. Thanks for making the check in so easy. The mattresses and bedding were cozy and a very nice touch. The firepit was a lot of fun, especially for our young grandson. The neighbors from OK shared their s'mores w/ him and he was over the moon. My daughter-in-law and husband, being coffee coneussors, were not too wild about the coffee choice, but the Keurig was awesome! We appreciated having the three ring binder w/ your story and all the info that you made available. The only thing I regret is that we weren't able to thank you in person. We'd like to come again and stay a little longer. Wildflower Cabins is a perfect renaming and much more welcoming than Cannibal Cabins in spite of the fact that we are all carnivores. Next time we'll come to witness the wildflowers. Thanks again, Your neighbors from over the pass in Durango, The Shislers"

It was the perfect getaway for our family to reconnect with nature. The cabin was tastefully decorated and had everything we needed.
