Casa Ambrosia is nestled in total peace and privacy, surrounded by tall cottonwood, pine, and oak trees, with an expansive view of the pastoral river valley of El Rito and the majestic Sangre de Cristo mountains off in the distance.
This wonderful, comfortable, and serene hideaway accommodates 4-5 people. The uniquely designed passive solar adobe house with high wood ceilings and impressive vigas is spacious and filled with light. There is a large semi-circular sun room, built like a sunken kiva, that is designed after Casa Grande in Chaco Canyon. There is one bath with tub and shower and two large bedrooms, each with a spectacular view. The softly curved walls of most rooms create a calm and nurturing environment. A fireplace adds to the warmth and comfort of the radiant floor heat. And along with great indoor living and dining spaces, there is a covered patio for outdoor dining and relaxation. A newly added hot tub on the front patio is perfect for relaxation and stargazing year round.
Casa Ambrosia borders the mountainous Carson National Forest and you can hike for hundreds of miles right out the back door. A short drive takes you to a creekside trail leading to Potrero Falls amidst tall Ponderous pines and aspens, or to a dramatic outcropping of volcanic upthrust near a shady stream. Nearby forest roads lead you to high mountain meadows filled with wildflowers and streams and breathtaking views, or off into desert canyonlands, with red cliff walls and towering rock formations. In winter, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are great pastimes. Year round, the very clear night sky is perfect for stargazing.
The historic village of El Rito has it's own charm, including a well-supplied library, a traditionally-built adobe church, and El Farolito, a small family restaurant, world famous for its authentic northern New Mexico cuisine, recommended in the Rand McNally Road Atlas and Gourmet Magazine. Their red and green chili dishes are delicious and very reasonable.
Casa Ambrosia is 15 miles north of Abiquiu, with it's stunningly beautiful lake for swimming and boating. In the village of Abiquiu, you can tour the home and studio of world reknowned painter Georgia O'Keefe, and visit the Rising Moon Gallery, bursting with high quality art by local artists. And further north in Chama, you can ride the historic Toltec Railroad through the high mountains, catching the glory of the changing colors of Fall.
Casa Ambrosia is 14 miles west of the beautifully appointed Ojo Caliente Hot Springs Spa and Resort, with a variety of natural mineral pools to soak in, plenty of massage and spa treatments to choose from, and a delicious restaurant to top off an adventurous day.
Only one hour to Santa Fe, and about the same to Taos, you can enjoy all kinds of fine dining, live music, museums, galleries, boutique shops, antique stores, films, opera, and much more. Both Santa Fe and Taos have ski basins, and there are several golf courses in the area. There are many national monuments and historic sites in the area, including Bandelier with it's ancient cliff dwellings and petroglyphs.
Whether you're seeking cultural activities, ancient history, or natural beauty, there's something for everyone in this compelling heartland of Northern New Mexico.

- "Photos do not do this place justice! Casa Ambrosia is set in a little community surrounded by hills and blue skies and cool night air and birds and more stars than you’ve seen in a long while. Hit El Farolito for late lunch, the sopapillas are out of this world. The kitchen at Casa Ambrosia has all the stuff you’ll need to make your meals successfully. Beds are cozy. Bathroom was clean and also well-stocked. Get your groceries at the biggest city you flew into, as there are few / lean options near by. Thanks for an amazing and restful stay."

La Lomita is located in the area where La Familia Valdez has a 300 year history. La Lomita was conceived, designed and built with hospitality and spirituality in mind. It is a place of healing and rest, of relaxing and dreaming, of renewal. It holds mystery in the howling coyotes, the whispering junipers, the shifting arroyos, and the colorful wildlife. Bienvenidos! Nuestra casa es su casa.
Read our wonderful reviews and let our many guests describe the La Lomita experience. (See review section)
Nestled into the Black Mesa, La Lomita is the hub surrounded by Abiquiu to the northwest, Ojo Caliente and Taos to the north, Chimayo to the east, and Española and Santa Fe to the south, all with local art and food just 10 to 55 minutes away. It is 12 miles from the relaxing mineral springs and spa at Ojo Caliente, and 30 minutes from Los Alamos and Bandalier National Monument.
The spectacular Santa Fe Opera is 30 minutes away, as is its neighbor, the Santa Fe Flea Market with treasures made by 'artesanos' from Mexico, Guatemala and other native areas (open in Spring and Summer).
On the way to Taos, via the High Road through Truchas or the route along the Rio Grande through Velarde with the Black Mesa Winery, you will find beautiful scenery and native Hispano-made tin work, retablos, santos, and weaving from traditions begun hundreds of years ago.
River rafting in the Rio Grande or floating over the river gorge in a hot air balloon, are adventures waiting for all ages, as are the ski trails and golf courses, all in close proximity to La Lomita.
Stay at home and climb the Black Mesa, part of our 9 acre 'back yard', and if you reach the top (about 45 minutes of spectacular climbing), wander across the top of the Mesa and see the Rio Grande flowing below. Or grab your easel and paints, camera or writing pad, and capture the breath-taking, mountain scenes all around you. Need to relax? Try tai-ch, yoga or gentle walking around our juniper, piñon and desert-flowered landscape, and let the many visiting songbirds lull you into a peaceful siesta.
Keywords: On 9 acres, solar adobe home with covered portal (porch) facing the Jemez mountains, designed with quiet and the spiritual in mind. The terrain, including the mesa high above the house, suggests privacy. ¡Se habla español!
- "La Lomita was superb! Perfect desert dwelling with skies so dark that you’ll see stars you never though possible! Carl and Gretchen were great the entire process. Communication was simply top-notch from beginning to end. The house was clean, bright, and very comfortable! The location was excellent, affording access to anything in the area that you might want to do; from the many restaurants (try Socorro’s, it’s excellent) to recreation and city visiting from Taos to Santa Fe. I highly recommend this property!"

From the moment you see the Rio Grande River from our Great Room you know that your Rio Grande Retreat experience will be very special. Our house is located just 20 minutes south of Taos in the village of Rinconada situated in the heart of historic northern New Mexico, between Taos and Santa Fe, right on the banks of the Rio Grande River. Whether you visit in the spring when thousands of flowers are in bloom, the summer when our orchard is producing a variety of delicious apples, the fall when giant cottonwoods are ablaze with color, or the winter with the opportunity to ski at five different ski areas within an hour's travel time, all four seasons will be memorable.
With over three acres of grounds, your Rio Grande Retreat provides all the privacy you will ever desire. - "Rinconada Retreat was just as represented. Beautifully decorated and offered everything we needed. It is the first time I was provided beach towels and chairs! It was peaceful and we spent a great deal of time out by the river. Breakfast on the upper patio; picnics lower down; and we pulled the smaller table out of the gazebo to dine under the sky." - "Enjoyed the property, the scenery, the nature all around us. We arrived to a beautiful home that was fully stocked with everything we use at our home. The owners left a welcoming gift in the fridge, that was a first for us too while staying at a rental. Thank you so much for that. It was nice getting away from the Texas heat. My family loved the river as the backyard. Myself & my 13yo son thought it was so cool looking at the dark sky seeing stars, moon and whatever else we saw up there moving. Made family memories with our first grandchild, she loved the jacuzzi & hammock. I definitely recommend staying here & plan to go back again. Familia Perez"

El Rito is a town in New Mexico that has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. It was one of the first Spanish settlements in the Jicarilla Apache lands north of Santa Fe, being settled about 1807. The town is home to the San Juan Nepomuceno Catholic Church, which was built between 1827 and 1832. The El Rito Formation is a geologic formation in New Mexico dating to the Eocene epoch. “33 miles” to Ghost Ranch and “18 miles” to Ojo Caliente Spa
- "This delightfully bohemian place was furnished and equipped as if to serve guests who are snowed in for a week and need all the creature comforts. Downstairs had an impressively large table fit for a banquet, surrounded by eclectic artwork. The upstairs -- with lots of windows for ventilation -- invited deep lounging (velvet couches?). We came here during a summer heat wave, but had we come in winter we would have kept warm by firing up the oversized wood stove. The absolute high point was the spacious raised deck overhung by junipers but still allowing for stargazing -- literally at the boundary with Carson National Forest. A walk into the woods begins about twenty-five feet from that deck. The owner was welcoming and helpful. My only regret is not having spent more time with the resident dogs!"

We are centrally located in Abiquiu (w/ HOA-maintained dirt roads within Prado Valley Ranch). We've just added mini splits with zoned AC tied in with new grid tied solar array...
Pete & I spend part of the fall, winter & early spring in our new New Mexican home, thoroughly enjoying our time there. We stay with an eye to updates & making it a comfortable stay for our late spring, summer and early fall guests. We've added additional seating to the lovely portal & viewing patio, as well as a table for outdoor dining on the portal. We have a picnic table & a grill for the back patio, outside the kitchen, for breakfast dining, or shady meals in the afternoon or evening. He also built a fine, new 'convertible' bench/table for the upper balcony, for meals there or creative endeavors. We offer a carport, to shade vehicles from the most intense summer sun & from surprise thunderstorms with hail. We have many artists who enjoy the breathtaking views that Paloma offers (myself included) & we have made it possible to work from several locations.
Pets (1 or 2 small or medium size well behaved dogs. Sorry no cats, Pete is allergic) allowed on first floor only for a one time per stay fee of $50 per pet. Guests are expected to honor the first floor rule for pets. We also ask that dogs stay off of furniture & beds. Thank you.
Our kitchen is roomy & we love to cook many a gourmet meal there - so bring your groceries in & enjoy! (We supply an array of spices & herbs, condiments, usually coffee & a small selection of teas. We also offer dish & sensitive-skin laundry detergents, a washer/dryer - & even a clothesline.) We leave Casa Paloma in late April or early May, kicking & screaming as we love our stays in NM so much - but we leave a beautiful, comfy home for you to use as headquarters for your own northern NM adventuring.
We ask that you be respectful of our home & hope that you will also thoroughly enjoy the beauty & majesty of place that it offers, there above the El Rito Creek bosque. We adore listening to it happily gurgling below us during our stays. Oh, & did I mention the incredible quiet nights & those unstoppable stars?... If you're looking for a private, natural getaway, Casa Paloma is IT...
We also now offer HORSE FACILITIES! We have fenced the large front area of our property with 4-1/2' to 5' high no-climb horse fencing with a two-stall barn & corral. Bring a couple of horses, your hay, grain & buckets & enjoy ride-outs straight from our front yard! You can ride for miles into the arroyo, just below us, or ride through the plateaus in Prado Valley, where we live (please don't ride cross open fields, which would be neighbors yards), or you can take trails in the nearby Carson or Santa Fe National Forests, just short trailer-rides away. And there is lots of room in the circular driveway to park your rig.
Talk with Laura, if you would like to bring your equines to Casa Paloma. Charge is $100 per horse, per stay or week. (No stallions, rowdy horses or cribbers, please...)
We are in the middle of many historic & recreational sites: Carson Nat'l Forrest is 4 miles north on 554; El Rito village is 8 miles north; the old Abiquiu village is about 8 miles away. Bode's General Store, where locals & visitors gather for food & cheer, groceries & gifts, is across the road. Ojo Caliente, our wonderful local hot springs, is1/2 hour away. Just up Hwy. 84 is Abiquiu Lake - w/ summer recreational activities & beautiful views. Ghost Ranch, where Georgia O'Keeffe painted, is just beyond - about 25 minutes from Casa Paloma). Ghost Ranch now offers many workshops, plus hiking & horseback riding & a fine new history museum, featuring dinosaur fossils found in the area! Close by is Christ in the Desert Monastery, where one can drive preferably all-wheel drive, 14 scenic & bumpy miles in dry weather to secluded peace & check out what the Monks are doing. Awesome Echo Amphitheater is nearby. Tierra Amarilla & Chama, two charming northern New Mexico communities, are an hour's drive north. These villages are only 45 miles from Pagosa Springs. And Durango - a lively little western town - is just 3-1/2 hours from Casa Paloma. The ancient Anasazi ruins of Mesa Verde are just west of Durango - and the Four Corners of UT/AZ/CO & NM are just beyond that - so all this adventure is just one days drive away! The Grand Canyon is about 7 hours west of us.
(Santa Fe & Taos are all within an hour's drive, south or north of us.)
Los Alamos glows directly south of us, with a fine library, a swimming pool, a large Smith's grocery store - and all the scientific history of atoms & bombs one could imagine.
Jemez (hot) Springs; Cliff dwellings of Bandelier Nat'l Monument; the ancient & verdant volcanic caldera of Valle Grande & Puye Indian Ruins are all right in this area. Any one of these (or a combination) make for a fine day's exploratory of culture & natural beauty within a 45 minute drive. Any of these offer wonderful hiking.
Golf?... Well, there are several terrific desert courses! Black Mesa Golf, just south of Espanola, is a half an hour away & offers very nice greens. Buffalo Thunder Casino, about 15 minutes further south, towards Santa Fe, has a terrific (Hilton Resort caliber 27-hole) course, with food, drink & gambling waiting in the wings. Los Alamos also offers a fine public course. Santa Fe has several more.
Hiking is everywhere you turn, out in these huge, open sky lands, starting with walking out the driveway & down the arroyo, just below us on Fort Defina Drive. Take a left & spend tranquil time by the El Rito Creek, a sweet seasonal stream just below our home. We've hiked through the 'neighborhood' and have thoroughly enjoyed the climb & the trails that meander right here at home (a terrific area to walk your dogs). Peace, photos & views abound. Once booked & paid, we offer a comprehensive list of area hiking, biking & riding for your adventure outings.
Plaza Blanca (advanced permission/registration required)- famous in Abiquiu for its geology & beauty - is about 7 miles away, down off of County Road 155. If you're a hiker, you cannot miss a stay here without a least one mind-boggling trek in to these awe-inspiring white cathedral rocks. (An interesting tidbit is that the closing scene of "Cowboys & Aliens" was filmed in Plaza Blanca, along with many, many other Hollywood westerns of yesteryear & recently.)
Note: Plaza Blanca is accessible by gate code. To get this, please register with this private property's owner. If interested, contact daralIslam at PlazaBlanca@daralislam.org to request registration, permission and to get the gate code. It or may not be available for hiking at the time of your stay, as they close it during movie filming.
And, of course, no visit to Abiquiu - O'Keeffe country - is complete until one has explored Santa Fe, only an hour's drive southeast. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum awaits you, in the historic Plaza, as well as an untold amount of world-class art galleries on famous Canyon Road, art & clothing boutiques, fine shopping, fine dining, an abundance of grocery stores & antique shops... the list is endless.
The Rail Runner train can take you on down to Albuquerque, even, to explore Olde Town!... So MUCH to do; so little time...
If you want to explore the ancient church with the famous 'healing dirt' the 200-year-old El Santuario de Chimayo' sits outside the old village of Chimayo'. This is one of my personal favorites in the area, with a blend of Catholic history & mysticism that moves my spirit to tears. This is known as the "Lourdes of the Southwest"; thousands pilgrimage here annually for the "tierra bendita" at Easter and at Christmas. Be sure to allow time to explore el santuario & its adjacent chapels & gift shop. Afterwards, I suggest you take in a meal at the Rancho de Chimayo' Restaurante, a local favorite, full of old Mexican atmosphere, great food, & both indoor & lush outdoor dining.
A trip to Taos is an hour, or so, further north, either along the "River Road" (paralleling the Rio Grande) or explore the "High Road", through tiny & creative ancient villages. One of them is Truchas (where "The Milagro Beanfield War" was filmed in the 1970s. Robert Redford directed this timeless movie. It became the village of Milagro - where miracles still do occur.) Other villages, with old Catholic churches, along the High Road are Cordova, Ojo Sarco, Las Trampas & Penasco - all creative centers - winding thru' the scenic Santa Fe Nat'l Forest into Rancho de Taos. Here you will find one of the most photographed churches in America: Santuario San Francisco de Asis.
Taos, itself, offers up its own Plaza, culture & artistic history, as well as the famous Taos Pueblo, where Tewa Indians still make drums. The Taos Pueblo is one of the oldest continually-habitated civilizations in the United States.
Just outside of Taos is found one of the highest bridges in the world: the Rio Grande Gorge River Bridge, where one can drive (or walk) over & hear the reverberate echoes off great ancient walls plunging down 800 ft. to the Rio Grande River - which looks tiny from this perspective. NOT for those afraid of heights or the faint of heart!
***The Abiquiu area is a magnet to history, creativity, culture & natural beauty. To artists, photographers, poets & writers, scientists & outdoor adventurers.
Please enjoy your outings, then return to our portal or patio & relax into a quiet night of brilliant stars.

- "Harvey was so communicative and his arrival instructions were very easy to follow when my cell service and GPS became unreliable. I lagged upon arrival and he was so patient and gave me the space I needed to do some errands before checking in. The casita is perfect for one or two adults, and has everything you need for light snack and meal prep before heading out to explore the area. I was able to come and go with ease at any time of day—at night, the solar lights guided me to the front door. The bed was comfy, the A/C great, and the nights so quiet."

- "Property was more than I expected will definitely be back" - "We stayed at France’s beautiful house and enjoyed our stay with all the ladies in our family ages ranging from 20’s to 80’s. It was close proximity to Ojo Caliente. There is something I’d like to note. The listing says it sleeps 8 and I indicated there would be 8 of us but there are only 3 beds and a living space with couches. We packed an air mattress just in case and so glad we did. The beds are memory foam. The master bed seemed very hard for a few people. We also only had 6 towels for 8 people. I think this would be a great place for 5-6 people and maybe the listing had an error where it states it sleeps 8 people. I’m not sure if couches count as beds? Other than that, the house had everything we needed and we all made great memories."

About this space
El Studio is a 300+ square foot studio in an exquisitely converted adobe outbuilding. It shares a scenic 10-acre property with the main house (Casa Tocaya) and the guest house (La Biblioteca). Surrounded by a stone wall for privacy, it's close enough to the main house to serve as an extra bedroom and far enough away across the driveway that no one feels crowded.
The space
The Studio is enclosed by a stone wall and that area is private. There’s a front area with a bench, table and chairs. The side yard has a shade structure facing lovely views including Pedernal. There is another bench here and a matching chair. All for studio guests only. In addition, the Studio shares the 10-acre property with the main house Casa Tocaya and the Guesthouse, La Biblioteca. The land is unfenced and wild and stretches to a small arroyo. You can wander the land and local roads also make for lovely walks!
Guest access
Studio has private patios enclosed by a stone wall. It also shares the 10-acre property with the main house and guesthouse.
Other things to note:
We have only one close neighbor and she is a lovely person, but we ask that you please don't disturb her!
If you plan to bring a pet, please disclose at booking. The dog rules are no pups on furniture and no pups left alone in the house unless kenneled. We used to charge a pet fee, but now I'm trying out a policy where I ask guests with pets to leave a nice tip for my housekeeper.
We ask that guests stay reasonably quiet when outside in the evening.
- "I liked this property for attention to detail. This property is well equipped as a studio. " - "This adobe sits amid the most beautiful vistas in Abiquiu area. The artistic intent is evident in the charming adobe, from the hewn wood beams and trim, rock walls and walkway, stone shower, and SW decor. I was looking for solitude and found it here. Very close to O’Keefe museum, Plaza Blanca and Ghost Ranch. On clear nights, the constellations were too many to count as the Milky Way arched over the casita. Perfect for a getaway for 1-2 people. The host was very responsive to questions."

Cooking is not allowed in the cabin but the pavilion is only a minute or two walk away.
The pavilion is enclosed and has heat for chilly mornings. The space has carpet and laminate flooring, gas range, gas heater and is fully functional with a complete kitchen and hot showers.
Optic fiber is here! We now have complimentary high speed internet available at the pavilion where you can relax in comfort in any weather!
'The Ojo', our name for the land, is a sanctuary for people and wildlife, and has a wild river flowing through it! We love animals, but please, NO PETS! Our trails, from easy to challenging, give you plenty to explore right here, with easy access into the fantastic neighboring wild BLM badlands! Hike our private Shadow Mountain Trail and have the entire Black Mesa top to yourself!
Although you may be staying for only one night, to really appreciate this place we call 'The Ojo', consider spending more time here!
The Ojo Cabin is cozy, think 'tiny house', and located in the heart of ' The Ojo' and within classic Bosque of Northern New Mexico; perfect for short or longer stays. The comfy BeautyRest queen bed has been moved downstairs for greater ease. The loft is now a place to lounge in the sun on a cool morning or hang out and enjoy the view or use it to stretch or do your morning yoga routine!
The cabin has a bathroom/shower with hot/cold water and a 'Curve' RV type portable toilet. If you have any questions about how the cabin functions, special needs, etc. PLEASE ask before booking.
We provide towels, bedding, extra sleeping pad/cot if needed, a light for night time forays, everything needed to make your stay easy! A two minute walk gets you to the PAVILION. Trail lighting makes this walk in the dark a pleasure!
Bring your own food and store it in one of our fridges. Better yet, eat out, Dave knows all the choices in the area!
The cabin is located 45 minutes north of Santa Fe, 25 minutes from Abiquiu, one hour from Taos, and only a 10 minute drive to the Ojo Caliente Spa.
Did you arrive here without sunscreen, lotion, shampoo/conditioner? We have you covered, and each morning of your stay, complimentary coffee/tea is available for you to prepare.
The cabin sits on 116 acres of wild river, mesas, and nearby spectacular desert lands. Many bird species call this area home winter and summer! We are in the Bosque and summer nights are cool and spring nights can be chilly, but we almost always have pleasant sunny days. The Ojo Caliente river flows through the middle of our property, and directly in front of the cabin. We are wildlife friendly and in residence are beavers, raccoons, a variety of snakes (yes, in the summer occasional rattlers too), many lizards, squirrels, rabbits etc., with elk visiting nightly, yet NO negative interactions with animals has ever been noted.
Trails give easy access to all areas of the property including the challenging hike (1000 vertical feet in just over a mile) up Shadow Mountain (winter ice may close trail). Walking the Cholla Labyrinth in the early morning is an amazing experience!
We are close to many areas of interest in N. New Mexico, including several National Parks/Monuments. Skiing, climbing, hiking, biking, are all only minutes away, and Dave knows it all! We want to make the cabin your base for exploration!
You will love our pedestrian suspension bridge, and our spectacular Ojo Rainbow bridge guaranteed to shift your experience whether you have visited us before or not!
Ask the host for more information!
Although our gate is located on a major US highway, regular GPS database map information by itself is incorrect and WILL NOT LOCATE the gate! You will be asked to download the free app 'what3words' once you have booked. With the three locator words that will be sent to you, locating the gate day or night is easy!
We are ten miles south of the Spa on US 285.
Sorry, pets are not allowed!

Dogs can sleep on the futon style sleeper sofa. However, you must use one of the dark gray blankets to cover the upholstery.
PLEASE pick up all the dog poop. I have two dog poop bag dispensers located on the front and back porches. Poop should be tossed in the large black trash can near the front of the house.
