- "A wonderful spot, quiet , dark and so peaceful. Everyone loved waking up to the sunrise over the mountains and the sun hitting the red rock of Ghost Ranch. We took some wonderful walks and loved the cows and the coyotes." - "We were looking for a place to stay for a couple of nights after days of snow adventure at the Taos Ski Valley. My husband and I stumbled upon Vista de Lago and the pictures really captivated us. We've rented cabins and condos before but never tried a house surrounded by serene nature, away from the crowd! We had the 3 kids (teenagers) with us, and our Goldendoodle. The drive from Taos was already scenic but we were in awe as soon as we entered the Abiquiu lake area. It was a sunny afternoon when we arrived and everyone took their phones right away to take pictures of the hills and views of the lake! My 2 girls started collecting rocks and making rock formations! Even our dog was inspecting the rocks and the new terrain, running around freely! At night we were worried the kids will be bored because there was no cable, but who would need cable?!! After dinner we just chilled and chatted for hours, then watched a movie together from the DVD selection available. In the morning we watched the sunrise together and hiked around the area after a good breakfast. It was chilly in the morning but eventually warmed up to become an absolute perfect day. We were a bit worried about cayotes (from another review) and heard a couple of howling and bear-like sounds at night but realized that the community was fenced so should be safe. We were still careful though during our strolls as we had our dog with us unleashed. On the day of our checkout it started snowing and it was another sight to enjoy! Thanks to Larry for giving us this experience and sharing their beautiful house! He was quick to respond and gave us all needed info. We definitely recommend this vacation home and hope to return soon!"

Beautiful Adobe Overlooking Ghost Ranch And Abiquiu Lake
House
Gallina, New Mexico, USA

Please see important NOTE at the end of this description regarding RV's and other recreation vehicles.

'It was all so far away--there was quiet and an untouched feel to the country and I could work as I pleased.' Georgia O'Keeffe

Serenity abounds at Casa Bonita, where it is easy to see why this country had such a profound impact on Georgia O'Keeffe. Light and open, this modern adobe rests on ten acres overlooking Abiquiu Lake towards Ghost Ranch, with gorgeous views in all directions. Picture windows throughout the living area allow you to appreciate the vistas from the comfort of the well-appointed interior. The covered portales (covered porches) are ideal for enjoying the tranquility of the environment. Admire the view of the Pedernal from the portale off of the master suite, or take in the iconic landscape of Ghost Ranch while you grill on the portale off of the kitchen.

Spend your days hiking, visiting area galleries, or reconnecting with your own creative side. And after enjoying the unique sunset at the end of the day, savor the starlight of the unadulterated night sky.

'My first memory is of light--the brightness of light--light all around.' Georgia O'Keeffe

NOTE: RV's, trailers of any sort, large trucks, and small vehicles: motorcycles, skimobiles and such are prohibited in this gated community, called High Mesas.

Stellar, Southwest, Luxury home. Extraordinary location on Abiquiu Lake
House
Gallina, New Mexico, USA

'Breathtaking,' 'Fabulous,' 'Stellar,' 'Magical' - Casa del Rio, a unique southwestern home awaits those who seek a glimpse into what the West was like – before it was “won.”

Casa del Rio offers timeless views of the Rio Chama, Abiquiu Lake, Ghost Ranch - with no other habitation to confound the imagination. The house rests on a mesa about 100 feet above the narrowest part of the Rio Chama, just before it empties into Abiquiu Lake. Guests of the Casa enjoy limited access to the private lakefront. Four circles of stones (tipi rings) found on the land are silent proof that these vistas have been enjoyed by people for hundreds of years.

Inside the 1500 square foot house, you will find all the luxuries and amenities of the 21st century. An open floor plan includes a great room, dining area, and kitchen; all under hand-hewn vigas harvested from the San Juan forest. Leather couches, swivel chair, Taos-made furniture - all make it a pleasure to take in the ever changing landscape in any direction. (Be sure to catch the dawn when the morning light descends upon the water). Hand painted retablo and santos, Navaho and Zapotec rugs, prints by RC Gorman, and Georgia O'Keefe all enhance the experience of being immersed in the southwest.

The kitchen features granite countertops, energy saving appliances, and an island with cooktop. A 42” LED satellite TV, WiFi, and soundbar provide connection to the modern world. (for those who must) Soft foam, queen size mattresses, resort quality bedding ensure your night’s rest – so you can be prepared for your next day’s adventure...

Located in the heart of the Piedra Lumbre (Valley of the Shining Stones) Casa del Rio was designed for outdoor living. Covered portales on the east, north, and west sides provide shade from the ever bright New Mexico sun. The concave shape of the house provides shelter from wind and wraps around an additional 800 square feet of a Colorado red flagstone courtyard. On the courtyard, or under the portal, you will find; a three-burner gas grill, two lounge chairs, a love seat, and table and dining chairs for four.

To complete your Abiquiu experience there is an outdoor hot tub positioned for panoramic river and mountain views. For those who prefer, there is also a two-person, heart-shaped bath. Full moon nights are so bright you can see colors on the walls of the river canyon. On moonless nights the stars seem so close you could almost reach up and touch them...

Regarding thecoronavirus, I would like my guests to know that I take the pandemic very seriously. In addition to already high standards for cleanliness, all surface areas and commonly touched objects like keys, doorknobs, TV remote, etc. are cleaned and disinfected between visits.

The waters of Abiquiu provide an important resting place for migratory birds; a virtual oasis in a land of desert and mountains. Eagles, osprey, geese, and many other species take time to have their needs met on their way to other destinations. Perhaps this description may one day apply to you!

House
Abiquiu, New Mexico, USA

Barranca is an old Hispanic hamlet just west of Abiquiu above the Chama River. On its small plaza there are a few adobe houses, one of which is a very charming two bedroom, one bath vacation home.
The thick adobe walls have built-in traditional nicho's. The dining area comes with traditonal banco's and throughout the casita are tiled and wooden floors. A woodstove gives you great comfort in the winter. The thick walls keeps the house cool in the summer.

In Barranca you will find a lively creek coming from the mountains. Follow the spring-fed creek up-stream and enter the Santa Fe National Forest with sensational views of the Abiquiu valley and the surrounding mountain lands. - "The house is very well stocked, we were happy to have all we needed in the kitchen- including 5 different ways to make coffee! The mini split A/C was fantastic too! If you bring a dog take note- there’s a house along the driveway (that’s about a half mile long) that has at least 4 dogs that are not fenced in. The first couple days we took my dog, who is super friendly, for his walk and these dogs came charging at us and sniffed my pup and barked and followed us until we passed their property. It was fine, but one dog started to get a little more aggressive sounding so we started driving past their house to then start our walk or run. Not a big deal, but just something to know if you’re bringing a dog and want to take them on a walk from the vrbo house. We also had been planning to use the twin bed in the covered porch area, but there was some mouse poop on it and lizards everywhere- again, to be expected in this lovely secluded area but just know you may not want to count on using that bed. Really loved staying here and would love to come back in the winter, I’ll bet it’s just gorgeous! 😍"

Martinez Casita - Adobe on the Plaza

In the spring of 2010 Martinez Casita opened also for short term rentals. Conveniently located next to Barranca Plaza Casita, a favorite of many Ghost Ranch visitors for the last 7 years!

Both Martinez Casita and Barranca Plaza Casita offer full privacy. Yet since the casitas are sitting together on one end of Barranca Plaza, they form an ideal gathering place for groups of eight family members or old school friends. BBQ facilities are provided and there are great shadowy spots to linger under the trees. Special rates are available when both casitas are rented.

- "I really enjoyed my stay in this lovely little casita, though little isn't really accurate! It was super roomy with separate living areas, outside pergola BBQ area and views of the mountains. The casita was convenient for exploring the area without the bother of road noise and I enjoyed the bucolic nature of the location. I was greeted by Nimfa, who was super friendly and kind, and gave me some great suggestions. I would recommend this for anyone who likes to get off the beaten track!"

Casa Paloma Centrally Located Abiquiu Gem: great views, roomy kitchen, new AC!
House
Abiquiu, New Mexico, USA

We are centrally located in Abiquiu (w/ HOA-maintained dirt roads within Prado Valley Ranch). We've just added mini splits with zoned AC tied in with new grid tied solar array...
Pete & I spend part of the fall, winter & early spring in our new New Mexican home, thoroughly enjoying our time there. We stay with an eye to updates & making it a comfortable stay for our late spring, summer and early fall guests. We've added additional seating to the lovely portal & viewing patio, as well as a table for outdoor dining on the portal. We have a picnic table & a grill for the back patio, outside the kitchen, for breakfast dining, or shady meals in the afternoon or evening. He also built a fine, new 'convertible' bench/table for the upper balcony, for meals there or creative endeavors. We offer a carport, to shade vehicles from the most intense summer sun & from surprise thunderstorms with hail. We have many artists who enjoy the breathtaking views that Paloma offers (myself included) & we have made it possible to work from several locations.

Pets (1 or 2 small or medium size well behaved dogs. Sorry no cats, Pete is allergic) allowed on first floor only for a one time per stay fee of $50 per pet. Guests are expected to honor the first floor rule for pets. We also ask that dogs stay off of furniture & beds. Thank you.

Our kitchen is roomy & we love to cook many a gourmet meal there - so bring your groceries in & enjoy! (We supply an array of spices & herbs, condiments, usually coffee & a small selection of teas. We also offer dish & sensitive-skin laundry detergents, a washer/dryer - & even a clothesline.) We leave Casa Paloma in late April or early May, kicking & screaming as we love our stays in NM so much - but we leave a beautiful, comfy home for you to use as headquarters for your own northern NM adventuring.
We ask that you be respectful of our home & hope that you will also thoroughly enjoy the beauty & majesty of place that it offers, there above the El Rito Creek bosque. We adore listening to it happily gurgling below us during our stays. Oh, & did I mention the incredible quiet nights & those unstoppable stars?... If you're looking for a private, natural getaway, Casa Paloma is IT...

We also now offer HORSE FACILITIES! We have fenced the large front area of our property with 4-1/2' to 5' high no-climb horse fencing with a two-stall barn & corral. Bring a couple of horses, your hay, grain & buckets & enjoy ride-outs straight from our front yard! You can ride for miles into the arroyo, just below us, or ride through the plateaus in Prado Valley, where we live (please don't ride cross open fields, which would be neighbors yards), or you can take trails in the nearby Carson or Santa Fe National Forests, just short trailer-rides away. And there is lots of room in the circular driveway to park your rig.
Talk with Laura, if you would like to bring your equines to Casa Paloma. Charge is $100 per horse, per stay or week. (No stallions, rowdy horses or cribbers, please...)

We are in the middle of many historic & recreational sites: Carson Nat'l Forrest is 4 miles north on 554; El Rito village is 8 miles north; the old Abiquiu village is about 8 miles away. Bode's General Store, where locals & visitors gather for food & cheer, groceries & gifts, is across the road. Ojo Caliente, our wonderful local hot springs, is1/2 hour away. Just up Hwy. 84 is Abiquiu Lake - w/ summer recreational activities & beautiful views. Ghost Ranch, where Georgia O'Keeffe painted, is just beyond - about 25 minutes from Casa Paloma). Ghost Ranch now offers many workshops, plus hiking & horseback riding & a fine new history museum, featuring dinosaur fossils found in the area! Close by is Christ in the Desert Monastery, where one can drive preferably all-wheel drive, 14 scenic & bumpy miles in dry weather to secluded peace & check out what the Monks are doing. Awesome Echo Amphitheater is nearby. Tierra Amarilla & Chama, two charming northern New Mexico communities, are an hour's drive north. These villages are only 45 miles from Pagosa Springs. And Durango - a lively little western town - is just 3-1/2 hours from Casa Paloma. The ancient Anasazi ruins of Mesa Verde are just west of Durango - and the Four Corners of UT/AZ/CO & NM are just beyond that - so all this adventure is just one days drive away! The Grand Canyon is about 7 hours west of us.
(Santa Fe & Taos are all within an hour's drive, south or north of us.)

Los Alamos glows directly south of us, with a fine library, a swimming pool, a large Smith's grocery store - and all the scientific history of atoms & bombs one could imagine.
Jemez (hot) Springs; Cliff dwellings of Bandelier Nat'l Monument; the ancient & verdant volcanic caldera of Valle Grande & Puye Indian Ruins are all right in this area. Any one of these (or a combination) make for a fine day's exploratory of culture & natural beauty within a 45 minute drive. Any of these offer wonderful hiking.

Golf?... Well, there are several terrific desert courses! Black Mesa Golf, just south of Espanola, is a half an hour away & offers very nice greens. Buffalo Thunder Casino, about 15 minutes further south, towards Santa Fe, has a terrific (Hilton Resort caliber 27-hole) course, with food, drink & gambling waiting in the wings. Los Alamos also offers a fine public course. Santa Fe has several more.

Hiking is everywhere you turn, out in these huge, open sky lands, starting with walking out the driveway & down the arroyo, just below us on Fort Defina Drive. Take a left & spend tranquil time by the El Rito Creek, a sweet seasonal stream just below our home. We've hiked through the 'neighborhood' and have thoroughly enjoyed the climb & the trails that meander right here at home (a terrific area to walk your dogs). Peace, photos & views abound. Once booked & paid, we offer a comprehensive list of area hiking, biking & riding for your adventure outings.

Plaza Blanca (advanced permission/registration required)- famous in Abiquiu for its geology & beauty - is about 7 miles away, down off of County Road 155. If you're a hiker, you cannot miss a stay here without a least one mind-boggling trek in to these awe-inspiring white cathedral rocks. (An interesting tidbit is that the closing scene of "Cowboys & Aliens" was filmed in Plaza Blanca, along with many, many other Hollywood westerns of yesteryear & recently.)
Note: Plaza Blanca is accessible by gate code. To get this, please register with this private property's owner. If interested, contact daralIslam at PlazaBlanca@daralislam.org to request registration, permission and to get the gate code. It or may not be available for hiking at the time of your stay, as they close it during movie filming.

And, of course, no visit to Abiquiu - O'Keeffe country - is complete until one has explored Santa Fe, only an hour's drive southeast. The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum awaits you, in the historic Plaza, as well as an untold amount of world-class art galleries on famous Canyon Road, art & clothing boutiques, fine shopping, fine dining, an abundance of grocery stores & antique shops... the list is endless.
The Rail Runner train can take you on down to Albuquerque, even, to explore Olde Town!... So MUCH to do; so little time...

If you want to explore the ancient church with the famous 'healing dirt' the 200-year-old El Santuario de Chimayo' sits outside the old village of Chimayo'. This is one of my personal favorites in the area, with a blend of Catholic history & mysticism that moves my spirit to tears. This is known as the "Lourdes of the Southwest"; thousands pilgrimage here annually for the "tierra bendita" at Easter and at Christmas. Be sure to allow time to explore el santuario & its adjacent chapels & gift shop. Afterwards, I suggest you take in a meal at the Rancho de Chimayo' Restaurante, a local favorite, full of old Mexican atmosphere, great food, & both indoor & lush outdoor dining.

A trip to Taos is an hour, or so, further north, either along the "River Road" (paralleling the Rio Grande) or explore the "High Road", through tiny & creative ancient villages. One of them is Truchas (where "The Milagro Beanfield War" was filmed in the 1970s. Robert Redford directed this timeless movie. It became the village of Milagro - where miracles still do occur.) Other villages, with old Catholic churches, along the High Road are Cordova, Ojo Sarco, Las Trampas & Penasco - all creative centers - winding thru' the scenic Santa Fe Nat'l Forest into Rancho de Taos. Here you will find one of the most photographed churches in America: Santuario San Francisco de Asis.
Taos, itself, offers up its own Plaza, culture & artistic history, as well as the famous Taos Pueblo, where Tewa Indians still make drums. The Taos Pueblo is one of the oldest continually-habitated civilizations in the United States.
Just outside of Taos is found one of the highest bridges in the world: the Rio Grande Gorge River Bridge, where one can drive (or walk) over & hear the reverberate echoes off great ancient walls plunging down 800 ft. to the Rio Grande River - which looks tiny from this perspective. NOT for those afraid of heights or the faint of heart!

***The Abiquiu area is a magnet to history, creativity, culture & natural beauty. To artists, photographers, poets & writers, scientists & outdoor adventurers.
Please enjoy your outings, then return to our portal or patio & relax into a quiet night of brilliant stars.

Spectacular Ranch Overlooking the Chama River at the Heart of Abiquiu
House
Abiquiu, New Mexico, USA

This is a gorgeous house perched above the Chama river on 22 stunning acres in the heart of Abiquiu. Surrounded by flower & herb gardens, fruit trees, an old growth "bosque," and beautiful views, this is a magical spot for personal relaxation, family reunion, group gatherings and celebratory events!
The house marries old New Mexico charm, deep set windows, kiva fireplaces, antique and tribal furnishings, and original art work with modern comforts and conveniences throughout, including newly upgraded, high speed internet through Starlink.
The garden areas adjacent to the house include an outdoor fire pit, herb and flower gardens, a grape arbor and plum, apple, pear and peach trees. The property also features an old growth cottonwood grove, beautiful river and mountain views, and direct river access. The ranch is located near the entrance to Plaza Blanca (or, the White Place, as Georgia O'Keeffe called it, ) and sits immediately across the Chama river from Bode's and the Abiquiu Inn. It is a magical spot for personal retreat, local exploration, family gatherings, celebrations and workshops!
The main wing of the house includes three guest bedrooms, each with a private bathroom; a large living and dining room, a well stocked kitchen with an adjoining game area, a laundry/mud room and a screened sunroom with gorgeous views of the Chama river and the mountains that drew Georgia O'Keefe, among many others, to Abiquiu. (Upon request, the two king size beds in the main wing can be converted to 4 single beds.). A second wing of the house, off of the kitchen, includes two bedrooms, one with a king bed, the other with two single beds; a large, shared bathroom with double sinks, a bathtub and walk in shower; and, a cozy TV room with pull out queen sofa bed and wood burning stove.
The house's deep walls, ceiling fans and cool Abiquiu nights make for lovely sleeping temperatures during summer months, and in the winter, radiant floor heat and several fire places keep the house warm and cozy.
We permit a dog, but only with advance approval. Any dog that comes onto the property must be experienced and safe with ranch animals, as well as with people it doesn't know.
The ranch makes for an extra special place for family gatherings and celebrations. Both are allowed on the ranch, however fees apply if gatherings will include more people than are part of the overnight guest party.
The ranch is an amazing place for weddings! It can accommodate weddings up to 135 people. Booking the ranch for a wedding can be done directly with us (wedding venue fees will apply).
Longer stays at the ranch, with reduced rates, are possible. Please enquire with us directly.
Other things to know:
- Rosy, our pony, and Paddy and Honey, two rescue horses, live in the barn along with Scully, a rescue cat. Our animals are friendly, however use of the barn and access to the animals is off limits to guests for safety reasons. The barn, outbuildings, corrals, and pasture areas are not included with the house rental.
- River Access: guests are welcome to visit and play in the river from the property, however all do so at their own risk. Currents can be strong and we cannot vouch for the safety of playing in the river.
- Wildlife: different kinds of animals (including coyotes), species of birds, reptiles (including rattle snakes) and insects live in abundance in this part of the world. There is exceptional natural beauty to be found here, both on the property and in nearby areas, but exploring the outdoor areas here is best suited for people who are comfortable with and love nature in all its manifestations.

Guest Reviews:

- "The house is beautiful. The owner is a delight to work with. The bedrooms are all comfortable. The kitchen is spacious and easy to work in. My only wish is that the kitchen supplies were more consistent. I’ve stayed there twice: the first time we had everything we needed but the second time there were fewer staples (e.g. pepper.) That’s a minot negative though given the beauty of the property and location." - "My husband and I had a backyard wedding ceremony here with a few of our closest family members. It is a beautiful home with breathtaking views. Brooks is a kind and responsive host. We are looking forward to our next stay at the ranch."

Evidenced by the photography, narratives and passion of companion properties listed on this site- and seared into the American imagination by the paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe- the Piedra Lumbre basin captivates; a thin place. From the edge of a mesa, Casita á Medida surveys it all: red cliffs forming Abiquiu Lake to the East, Ghost Ranch expanding to the North, Chama River Valley to the West and El Pedernal dominating the horizon to the South. Filling between are the ranges of Sangre de Cristo and the Jemez, Santa Fe National Forest and Kit Carson National Forest. And dark sky nights.

To experience this area takes time, a lifetime pursuit of many. Days of hiking, fishing, boating, rafting, discovering petroglyphs, searching for fossils/ historic remnants; trips to Santa Fe, Taos, Ojo Caliente, Navajo Lake, Heron Lake, Chama, Pagosa Springs, Silverton and Durango, CO. Casita á Medida is designed with the long stay in mind. Built in the spirit of Northern New Mexico with deep deference to the surrounding landscape, Casita á Medida is a compound style retreat with one building housing dual master suites and another the great room, forming a protected patio third living space. The vast windows frame the art listed above (follow the changing forms of El Pedernal while preparing dinner; overlook the serenity of Ghost Ranch as you relax in the soaking tub). Inside melts to out. Designed to be completely off-grid, the site also features sustainable design such as passive solar mass, solar heat-boost for the domestic hot water and radiant floor heat, as well as gray watering, rain catchment and Holzer spirited permaculture supporting landscaping designed to further the circle.

With dual master suites (featuring a King and Queen or Queen and two twins) and a separated great room/kitchen structure, Casita á Medida can be modified to meet the needs for your stay. Allow yourself the time to be able to appreciate the experience. Allow yourself permission that the enjoyment - and biggest achievement- was that the day was.

Located about 20 feet north of neighboring El Sol Studio, The Studios are a perfect pairing for travelling friends. The studios enjoy shared outside common areas including a flagstone patio, a charcoal BBQ grill, picnic table, outdoor seating, and free parking. All areas have views galore!

The Studios are perfect additional rooms for nearby vacation home rentals. They are also great lodging options for solo travelers, couples, outdoor artists or those taking workshops at Ghost Ranch. If you don't need a lot of space or a kitchen, The Studios may be a great option for you. There are two studios in the building so you may have a neighbor or friend on the other side of the building.

As small economy guest rooms, the The Studios do not have WiFi or televisions (although your cell phone should work fine at the location and you can use your cell as a hot spot). This is a great place to unplug and rejuvenate!

Bring all your food and drink provisions with you. Bring prepared foods or plan to prepare simple meals in the microwave, toaster oven or outside on the charcoal BBQ. While two plates and cups are provided, you will want to bring any dishes that you want to cook with. Bring your own charcoal and lighter fluid for the grill.

The studios are located outside the village of Abiquiu in a gated community on Abiquiu Lake. It is about a 25 minute drive to Abiquiu. There is a wonderful history in this area - from dinosaurs, to Native American pueblos, to Spanish explorers, to cattle rustlers, to ghosts and witches, to Georgia O'Keeffe - all the way to our current age where the past history and culture blends with the multi-cultral artist colony that Abiquiu has become.

The room is conveniently located near Ghost Ranch, Echo Amphitheater, Monastery of Christ in the Desert, Plaza Blanca, Pedernal, and the Carson National Forest. You will also want to explore the Purple Adobe Lavender Farm, Bandelier National Monument, the nearby Cumbres Toltec Train, rafting the Chama River, the Ra Paulette Cave Tour, and Ojo Caliente.

You will need a car. During winter months, we recommend a 4WD or AWD as many of the roads in New Mexico are dirt/gravel. The roads back to the studios are dirt/gravel.

You may want to consider purchasing trip insurance in case your travel plans change or if you have concerns about traveling. Although we understand situations arise making cancellations unavoidable, we do not take responsibility for changes to your reservation due to delayed arrivals, early departures, inclement weather, unforeseen changes to travel plans, medical or family emergencies, work conflicts, missed or cancelled flights, pandemics, force majeure, etc. Travel insurance is used to protect your trip in the event of cancellation, or you can self-insure by taking on the risk yourself. Please note that as a small business owner, we cannot act as your travel insurance.

- "I had trouble locating the unit. A bit remote; had to travel a few miles on a gravel road. GPS info in listing is not accurate - GPS does not work well at the location. When I arrived, 1/2 of unit had no power. Called Tania, she came immediately and flipped the breaker switch back on. However, after my arrival, ABSOLUTELY no problems. Enjoyed the views, the peace and quiet, rainbows after showers on far side of lake. Pet friendly. I would recommend this unit to anyone who may be traveling in the area."

Guest Reviews:

- "I liked this property for attention to detail. This property is well equipped as a studio. " - "This adobe sits amid the most beautiful vistas in Abiquiu area. The artistic intent is evident in the charming adobe, from the hewn wood beams and trim, rock walls and walkway, stone shower, and SW decor. I was looking for solitude and found it here. Very close to O’Keefe museum, Plaza Blanca and Ghost Ranch. On clear nights, the constellations were too many to count as the Milky Way arched over the casita. Perfect for a getaway for 1-2 people. The host was very responsive to questions."

- "Our few days at The Grand Hacienda, high on a mesa overlooking Abiquiu Lake and the surrounding stunning geography, were like a time apart; a place where time slows down and one is relieved, for a bit, of the noise of the world. This unique place is the product of two remarkable individuals who took the time and did the research to create a sophisticated yet down to earth, aesthetic and restorative experience. As artists (painter and architect), we deeply appreciate the "green" construction, the design and strategic siting of the building and each of its three suites, the thoughtful cuisine - creative, healthful and delicious! - the overall tone of the place, its tasteful landscaping and appointments. There simply isn't anything intrusive or abrasive in the entire experience. On the contrary, everything is designed to offer a time and space that is both stimulating and profoundly restful. Carolyn and Tom have created a jewel."

Modern luxuries, sophisticated services, green and eco-friendly – think of a small, boutique luxury inn – blended with authentic architecture and inspired design – think adobe and southwestern style. In this desert landscape of arroyos, mesas, ridges and lakes and rivers, the estate inn offers an inspiring welcome to a truly magical location. Enjoy amazing views, stillness, natural isolation, and hiking.

With three suites, the Hacienda is a serene escape, a retreat nestled on a mesa top overlooking Abiquiu Lake, Ghost Ranch, the Red Cliffs, Pedernal, and plains of red, yellow, purple and green. This elegant, high-end inn offers a luxury experience in a location surrounded by quiet stillness. Located in the middle of Georgia O'Keeffe country, you will feel what she did when saying, "It's something that's in the air – it's different. The sky is different, the wind is different." This breathtaking land and the beauty of The Hacienda are sure to soothe, calm and inspire exploration.

Staying here is all about the experience.

Our guests arrive as strangers and leave as friends. This is an extraordinary experience, the most luxurious lodging option in the area. Whether you want private, intimate time by yourselves or maybe you want to engage with others at a Happy Hour or join in a competitive game of Bocce Ball - the choice is yours! Join in great conversations around the fireplace, meet incredible like-minded people, or roast s'mores on your private portal and enjoy an evening of intimate privacy. At The Grand Hacienda, you will find yourself in a magically beautiful and inspiring location where you can do as much - or as little - as you want. There is wonderful hiking, rafting, and exploring. The local area is full of history, culture, geologic wonders and adventures. But you will want to carve out time to enjoy your destination - the stillness and beauty of The Grand Hacienda.

Each suite opens from a private entrance into your spectacular living space. A king-sized bed, ensuite bathroom with a spa shower and a soaking tub, and private outdoor portal (patio) with views and a chiminea fire pot. Enjoy complimentary WiFi and Cable TV. Control your own temperature. Relax with luxurious linens, towels and bathroom products.

All three suites in The Grand Hacienda are totally different, and yet, all are magical. You also will have access to our wonderful common areas, including a shared full kitchen; the Great Room with a kiva fireplace, sitting and dining areas, books, games and puzzles; laundry facilities; the Lakeside Portal for outdoor dining or relaxing; a bocce ball court; a six-person hot tub overlooking the water; a plaza area with additional seating, a foot pool and access to a rooftop deck for 360' views and sky gazing. No detail has gone unnoticed. No amenity overlooked.

Outdoors, enjoy the gated and walled inner plaza, try your hand at a game of Jenga or Bocce Ball, enjoy the lakeside portal, soak in the outdoor hot tub, roast s'mores in the outdoor fire pit, use the grill, or hike the property. After a long hike, dip in our splash plunge pool to cool off.

Enjoy free parking, complimentary fire wood, laundry supplies and kitchen supplies.

Start each morning with a three-course gourmet breakfast and specialty coffees, and end each day with an afternoon treat and spectacular sunset. Because we have no light pollution, this is the perfect location to use our telescope and check out stars, planets and the Milky Way.

Our location is like no other. Remote and away from the crowds, the drive to our property is about 4 miles on a dirt road, winding through beautiful country as you make your way towards the lake. Pedernal stands guard on one side, Abiquiu Lake and Ghostranch on the other side. The 360' views of spectacular vistas, red cliffs and the lake are so much better than we can capture in a picture. You really do have to see The Grand Hacienda to believe it.

Easy access to Ghost Ranch, Santa Fe and Taos. Make this your base to explore northern NM and experience the landscape that has inspired countless artists!

The space
This is a great space to put your feet up and relax after a day of exploring the local sights and culture. Many people comment on how comfortable the bed is! Sink into rest, relaxation, and quiet.

This unit is completely separate from our living area. We're just a phone call or text away if you have any questions during your stay!

Need more space or beds for your group? We have another rental unit next door with a small efficiency kitchen, queen bed, and fold-out futon. Check out "Il Nido di Falco ("Falcon's Nest")

For your convenience, the unit has a table and chairs, a coffee pot, coffee, tea kettle, selection of tea, small "dorm sized" refrigerator, toaster, cups, plates, glasses, silverware, wine bottle opener, etc. In the bathroom, there is a shower with towels, hair dryer, and shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.

Re: Air conditioning: Out here in New Mexico, where we have a dry climate, you'll often find evaporative coolers (aka "swamp coolers") instead of AC. It's a very effective cooling system, but isn't "air conditioning" per se.

Pets are approved on a pet-by-pet basis, in advance. We charge an additional $25 cleaning fee to cover the costs associated with ensuring every single thing in the place is completely cleaned for the next person (who may have allergies). If you bring a pet without approval, we will charge an additional $75 cleaning fee.

We are easily accessible on a paved County Road that has a short (maybe 100') section of dirt where the County Road goes through a little wash. Rental cars do fine. (FYI many roads in NM are unpaved.)

There is no smoking allowed anywhere on the property and no incense allowed in the unit. We ask that shoes are removed upon entering the unit to help keep things clean, and that garbage is removed on departure. Thanks! Also, no parties allowed. We value the quiet out here! If you'd like to invite additional guests over, please check with us first.

Casa Granada, Sunny casita along on the Rio Chama
House
Northern New Mexico

A tranquil experience and secluded getaway, yet easily accessible below the stunning Cerrito Blanco in Abiquiu. This 800 square foot casita makes the perfect weekend or week-long getaway for a couple or small family looking for a unique experience in beautiful Abiquiu. Sip your coffee outside or along the river, practice yoga, meditate, read, write, stargaze, bird watch and take in the beauty of the Chama River Valley, right in the heart of Tewa country!

The space
Enter the casita directly into the gorgeous sunroom with its own seating area. From there, you enter the main casita through large double doors that, when opened, offer plenty of solar gain throughout the house. In the main living room area is a large, comfortable couch, hand-carved wooden chair and coffee table. To the right are the full bathroom (bathtub, shower, toilet and sink), and main bedroom with a Queen sized bed and comfortable mattress. To the left of the main living room are the open kitchen and dining area. Kitchen is fully equipped with everything you'd need to cook and eat, except the food. We do provide coffee, tea, sugar, creamer, oils & spices.

Guest access
Guests can access the Rio Chama down a walking path beyond the casita. Please be sure to stay on the path and stop when the path reaches the river (beyond is private property to both the left and right).

Other things to note
Please note that Abiquiu is a small, rural community. If you are not a "country person" you may not be thrilled with some of the quirks of renting a casita in the country. Many of our guests love this feature, but please make note:

We are on a rural septic system out here and there is absolutely no toilet paper allowed in the toilet. Toilet paper must be disposed of in the covered waste-bin provided. (Thank you for helping to keep our septic system in working order!)

We are located above an artesian well at the base of a volcanic mountain range. Because of this, we experience a high mineral content in the water. The water is 100% safe and drinkable. Please note, as of November 2023, we have added a new filtration system in the well *and* the hot water heater, and the sulphur-like odor in the hot water is gone. The water does still have a high mineral content, though, which is a great perk as it is better than traditional city water. Some folks prefer to drink bottled water though, which is available at nearby Bode’s.

Wifi is going to be slower than you'll find in a bigger city. We have the fastest wifi available in the area, but if you are doing heavy uploading in addition to video calls and streaming movies at the same time, you will find the wifi will not be adequate. It is very much adequate for video calls , streaming movies, email/surfing, but not all the above simultaneously.

Also, there can be critters, especially if food is left out. Please use fridge and cupboards provided to secure food and avoid inviting the critters in! If you do see critters (mice specifically), or evidence of them, please let us know immediately so we can set traps.

The Casita at Prado Verde Ranch has a rustic feel and will take you back in time. The ranch, located along the Chama River, is a 200-acre working ranch in Abiquiu NM. The main ranch house, well over 100 years old, is home to the Newell family and Newell Cattle. It is winter pasture and spring calving grounds for the cattle. Raven House
House
Northern New Mexico

This cozy 2-story home sits on 10 acres in the Chama River Valley. A seasonal creek runs along edge of land with amazing mountain views. Ideal for a single artist, couple or small family.

Hiking + hot springs nearby, including Ghost Ranch, Poshuouingue ruins & Ojo Caliente Springs! Most pets are welcome (for a pet fee). It's helpful to check in on it, however, due to our contained pups further back on the land. Open to longer stays at discounted price. Write about either to discuss!

The space
The house has a spacious upstairs loft bedroom with a queen bed, a full downstairs kitchen with living room and bunk bed, (2 stacked single beds), set apart enough to feel like it's an extra room, washer/ dryer, couch and full bathroom with jacuzzi.

It is minimal and clean, with strong bones built in '07. It overlooks a valley of Cottonwood trees, sagebrush, willow and juniper, with lots of walking opportunities.

Also, please note, this home is placed within short walking distance of another lovely rental home on the land. Throughout various times of the year, we rent both homes to kind and quiet guests. Holding an easeful and honoring energy among the land, spaces and visitors to the land. Please help us keep it this way, if you consider staying.

For heating: you have the option of either a propane heater and/ or an electric infrared heater. Both are strong enough to heat the space on their own.

Perfect for either the single artist or couple, looking to be with nature, and/ or a family or group sleeping up to 4.

Guest access
Guests can access the washer/ dryer (included in house), the land surrounding the home and of course the patio overlooking the land.

(Note: the fence helps contain and separate my 3 dogs from the area immediately surrounding your home. If you wish to explore beyond the fence line- please ask and if I am free, I'll gladly take you on a longer walk.)

Other things to note
*Note: Potential Disclaimer*:

A kind note to inform travelers that this home is in the high desert of Abiquiu. It is a clean, well built, insulated, and in a fairly rustic environment, that is perhaps not suited for those looking for a 'Hyatt experience'.

We live in the desert (with trees, dust storms, monsoons, and often back-to-back snow storms in the winter), thus constantly working with the shifting elements of nature.

I have now had 2 unhappy customers out of over 300, that seemed to imagine this place as a pristine Hyatt Resort. While I am always open and working to improve this place, the reality is- we live with nature, and cannot please everyone. :) Please consider this before booking, and hopefully this will invite those who appreciate being close to nature!

For larger group bookings, type "Unashay Home Retreat" into the search bar to book both of our homes (Hawk + Raven House).

Abiquiu House Overlooking Plaza Blanca
House
Northern New Mexico

An adobe home on 13.5 acres of land and has expansive views of Abiquiu, the Chama river valley, the geologic formations known as Plaza Blanca (or the “White Place”), and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains over Santa Fe.

We are located 55mins from Santa Fe, and 5hrs from Denver.

Abiquiu is a destination frequented by artists, writers, spirit seekers, and nature lovers from around the world. Check out our photos on our Insta (@59junipers)

The space
We’ve spent the last few years fixing up our house to be an enjoyable place for us to live in for part of the year, host friends, family, and others who are interested in getting away and enjoying the solitude and incredible views.

Many of the rugs and decor in our space come from Turkey. Juliette is Turkish and when we go back to visit family, it is hard to not come back with some additional goods. Most of the furniture, bedding, and appliances in the house are new.

Our house has one bedroom with a queen bed and A/C unit, and an additional queen bed tucked away (loft style, behind a bookcase) in the main room next to the living room. The space can comfortably sleep 4 people.

We have one bathroom that has a walk-in shower, and large washer and dryer.

Our entry has a mud room (for removing shoes), and a large entryway space for keeping items that go in-and-out of the house like luggage, coolers, backpacks, etc...

We also rent out our casita, which is about 100ft away from the house and is divided by a row of Juniper trees. Please let us know if you are interested in both places.

Remote work
We feel that our house is the perfect place to work from, relax, and use as your base camp for expeditions around Northern New Mexico. Seriously, we love working from that space. The wood ceilings provide a great backdrop for all of your ZOOM calls.

Plus we have fast internet powered by a Starlink (80 - 124mbps) that feeds into an Eero Mesh router system around the property.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Kitchen + Grill
We have an induction stove that get hot very quickly, and a number of pans and baking gear in the kitchen. If you need something additional, let us know. We also have a gas grill on the patio.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

A/C + Heat
There are new A/C + heating units around the house. Though most of the year, the temperature drops at night and you'll find that opening a window will provide you with the right amount of cool air to make you fall into a deep sleep.

The house also has radiant floor heating which helps to keep the whole space super comfortable on those extra cold days.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Water
The water on our property comes from our well. The tap water is fairly drinkable (slightly alkaline), but we recommend using the filtered water that is available to the right of the sink. There is also a filtered water tap in the fridge. We ask that guests be mindful of their water use when staying with us.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Laundry
We have a new washer/dryer and have Meyer's lavender laundry detergent on hand for you to use when you're here.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Desert Critters
We are in the desert and there are critters around in the warmer months (snakes, scorpions, tarantulas, centipedes). We continually do a lot of work to seal up the house and ensure none of them get in, but we’ve found that the occasional one still finds a way in, mostly through people leaving a door open.

We use a natural, peppermint bug spray around common doorways. It works! We also recommend bringing a pair of slippers when in the house!

Guest access
You’ll have full access to the house, which should have all the amenities you need to have a comfortable stay in Abiquiu. The patio are a perfect place to watch the sunrise, do morning yoga, or see the milky way at night.

Our casita is about 100ft away from our main house, and there is a row of dense Juniper trees between both places which helps to create private space for the people staying in the casita and on the outdoor patio area. Please let us know if you are interested in both places.

There is plenty of parking in our large driveway.

Other things to note
Our place is one of a few houses up on the mesa overlooking Abiquiu. The neighbors are all artists who have lived in the area for over 30 years. They are all friendly and all have a deep admiration for land, nature, and the magic of the area.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Groceries
If you are coming in from afar, it would be a good idea to bring a few basic provisions with you (coffee, milk, eggs, etc...). The local grocery, Bodes, is open 7am-7pm daily.

• Bode’s is possibly the most famous gas station in the west. Their breakfast burritos are considered the best in New Mexico. They also have a wide selection of food items, from eggs and milk to rotisserie chicken, wine, ice cream, and local beers. They are open from 7am-7pm daily.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Restaurants in the area
• Café Sierra Negra is a relatively new and popular spot among locals. The food is fantastic, fresh, and made with love by Melody and her local staff. There are a number of great options for vegetarians. Get there early (before 7pm) as items sell out fast.

• Abiquiu Inn is a great spot any day or night of the week. Everything on the menu is great, but we highly recommend the blue corn trout tacos, or the green chili hamburger! They are open till 9pm.

• The Frosty Cow serves ice cream, milkshakes, and paninis. They’re across the street from Bode’s and are open most days of the week, Apr thru Oct. The Frosty cow hibernates from Nov-Mar.

• Mamacita’s pizza is much loved by the locals and is currently open 3 nights a week. They’re located at the intersection of HWY 84 and 554 to El Rito. You’ll have to stop by to see their current hours.

• El Farolito is a great place for authentic Northern New Mexico food. They are located in the heart of El Rito (18min away), and open Weds-Sun.

Abiquiu Artist Casita Overlooking Plaza Blanca
House
Northern New Mexico

Our casita sits on 13.5 acres of land and has expansive views of Abiquiu, the Chama river valley, the geologic formations known as Plaza Blanca (or the “White Place”), and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains over Santa Fe.

We are located 55mins from Santa Fe, and 5hrs from Denver.

Abiquiu is a destination frequented by artists, writers, spirit seekers, and nature lovers from around the world. Check out our photos on our Insta (@59junipers)

The space
Our casita / guest house is one large room + bathroom + laundry room. It has all new furniture and appliances — queen bed, A/C, full kitchen, bathroom, shower, and washer and dryer.

We’ve spent the last few years fixing up the casita for your enjoyment. Most of the furniture, bedding, and appliances are new.

Many of the rugs and decor in our space come from Turkey. Juliette is Turkish and when we go back to visit family, it is hard to not come back with some additional goods.

We also recently replaced the floor in the casita and did all of the work ourselves, which was a very rewarding experience. In the process we discovered that the snake on the bancos (concrete benches) has precious stones in the eyes!

Remote work
We feel that our casita is the perfect place to work from, relax, and use as your base camp for expeditions around Northern New Mexico.

We have two induction stove burners that get hot very quickly, and a number of pans in the kitchen cabinets. If you need something additional, let us know, we likely have it in the house. We also have a gas grill at our house if you need.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

A/C + Heat
There is a new A/C unit in the space, though most of the year, the temperature drops at night and you'll find that opening a window will provide you with the right amount of cool air to make you fall into a deep sleep.

There is also a propane heater in the space for those extra cold nights.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Water
The water on our property comes from our well. The tap water is fairly drinkable (slightly alkaline), but we recommend using the filtered water we’ve provided for you in large 3 gallon jugs. We ask that guests be mindful of their water use when staying with us.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Laundry
We have a new washer/dryer and have Meyer's lavender laundry detergent on hand for you to use when you're here.

Unashay Home
House
Northern New Mexico

This package includes 2 houses on 10 acres of land in Abiquiu, tucked in a quiet desert valley full of cottonwoods, willow, sage and views of Cerro Pedernal, Jemez + Sangre de Cristos mountains.

Both houses are two-stories + have all amenities. Well behaved pets welcome for a $40/ pet fee per house! Please write host beforehand to discuss your pet situation. See Raven House or Hawk House (in Abiquiu), for single home bookings.

The space
The 2 houses are quiet, private and fully equipped with all amenities including a jacuzzi in each home, showers, TV, full kitchens, 1 home has washer & dryer setup and *both homes have extraordinary views of the surrounding landscape.

If you are an animal person and wish to bring your dog(s), bring 'em along! Happy to host animals, as long as they're potty trained. ;) A large portion of the land has tall fencing to contain dogs (separate from my own), so guests can relax.

Guest access
Guests will have full access to both homes, *all amenities and are welcome to explore the land.

Other things to note
*Note: Potential Disclaimer*:

A kind note to inform all travelers that these homes and land are in the high desert of Abiquiu. They are clean, and in a fairly rustic environment, that is perhaps not suited for those looking for a 'Hyatt experience'. We are constantly working with the shifting elements of nature and a 10 acre plot of land (with several living and creative spaces).

I have now had 2 unhappy customers out of over 100, that seemed to imagine this place as a pristine Hyatt Regency Resort. While I am *always open and working to improve upon this place, the reality is- we live among nature here, and cannot please those looking for a different kind of experience. Please consider this before booking. :)

Guests are welcome to use the homes for creative projects, friend or family reunions, group retreats, couple retreats, etc. I am open to allowing larger events/ gatherings happen as long as guests respect the land and those of us (human and animal) living on it. Am also willing to consider discounts for longer bookings.

Write me for questions, if you're curious.

Amenities:

Iron • Hot water • Hair dryer • Hangers • Shampoo • Dryer • Washer • TV • Essentials • Air conditioning

Chuparosa Cottage
House
Northern New Mexico

Casita de Chuparosa is where the High Desert meets the Rocky Mountains!
Incredible 360 views of the Chama river valley on a spacious 15 acre property.
Iconic Pedernal -Georgia O'Keefee mountain muse- is in full view from the bedroom and porch, especially stunning when sillouetted by evening sunset. The casita is in a quiet area with some geological and cultural wonders nearby, such as the Puye cliff dwellings, Ghost Ranch, Christ Church in the Desert, Plaza Blanca, Abiquiu Lake and others.

The space
The Casita is north wing of owners home. It is a recently updated two bedroom space with a fully equipped kitchen. A large fireplace sits at the foot of the bed in the main bedroom, and stunning views of mountains and canyons can be seen from both bedrooms. The living room is complete with a smart TV, desk, and external monitor stashed away in the closet for use if needing to work during your stay ( there is strong wifi signal).
The second bedroom can also be used as a workspace.
The second bedroom has a double Murphy bed, so two can sleep in it but if that is too cozy, one person could sleep on the couch in the livingroom if there are four people.

You have access to the entire 15 acres and the two car casita parking area. There are two doors to access the casita. Entry is completely private with a digital keypads on the doors for access.

Other things to note
Also, we have a full service media studio available. Multi-camera and audio, documentary style or pod-cast. Call us for rates and availability. Record your life story for your kids or grandkids.

Our road looks bad but is not. The former owner had a Prius. We have Subaru's and have had no problem. Once in a long while there will be a storm which will make the hill slippery.

There are no cleaning fees.

The former owner had the property listed for fifteen years with stellar reviews. We have been here three years and have been settling in and working hard to update the casita so that we could continue to share the space and magic! The former reviews can be seen by searching "Casita de Chuparosa". ( It is not temporarily closed as some listing say). We are working on getting this straight. Not easy.
